We...... Need Your Help!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Hi Guys!

We've been tweaking some things here on the site recently in an attempt to improve load time and reduce glitches, but we're afraid this tweaking may have angered the tiki gods/gremlins/Blogger bogeys. And since every web browser presents a whole new fun set of complications, testing them all out is difficult.

That's where you come in.

Please, tell us in the comments if you had any problems loading, viewing or interacting with the site today. (This includes any RSS feed wonkiness.) In addition, if you don't mind, please let us know if your virus software or filters are blocking the site or any of the pictures. And remember, this is for posterity so, be honest.

Thanks, everyone!

Update: There are no images on this post and the link at the bottom of this post for Help for Haiti should not have an image either.

'Nother Update: Hey, Internet Explorer users! First of all, you really should be using a different browser. [grin] However, we know you don't all have a choice in the matter, so we're still working on getting all the IE kinks worked out. We'll update again when we've made more progress, but please be patient (and maybe try Firefox) in the mean time. Thanks!

For some reason the page is loading way slow and lagging today.

OMG, nothing but problems, I'm using IE, and it took me three tries to get in today, twice I had to shut down all my internet programs just to get out of your site!!!!!!

I'm using Internet Explorer 7 and the load time is REALLY slow. I've never had a problem before.

Loaded fine for me in Google Chrome with Windows XP. No problem seeing any images and it loaded very quickly.

I use explorer and both today and yesterday the site froze up on me while loading. This has not happened before.

I can open a new windo and try again but the frozen one is stuck until I reboot.

I'm not having any problems at all. As some of the others said, the photos are even loading more quickly than they had been before and right now I'm using my HP netbook, which has only 2GB of memory. It's running Windows 7 and Firefox (whatever the number is of the latest one - I can't keep track!)

Hope this helps!

Page load is VERY slow with IE7. once the page is loaded, scrolling is very difficult as well. Lots of starting/stopping.

Unknown said...

After 3 minutes I gave up trying to get the page to load completely. The post showed up fine but all the little pictures attached to the comments refused to load, the comments themselves appeared on rectangular blue backgrounds with white in between the sections - like the layer was off or something, and my browser actually froze several times while trying to scroll through the comments- to the point of me starting to open task manager to shut it down. I'm using IE8 and Win7, and I know I'm in the minority as an IE user, however if I had been a new person to the site I would have closed it and not returned. I always use google reader to read the blog itself and have no problems.

Hi Jen,

It's definitely acting squirrelly here -- took a long time to load, and then scrolling wasn't smooth -- very choppy, bouncing around, and it often doubled images. Of course, that meant TWICE the freudian nightmares, so that meant twice as much fun -- or appalled confusion, depending upon how you look at things.

I'm using plain old boring Internet Explorer (8, I think) if that helps.

Windows/Vista/Firefox 3.6.3 - viewing is fine, but lately it doesn't take the first word verification. Claims I got it wrong, puts up a new word, I type that one in, and the post works. Loading's slower lately, but Firefox keeps hanging and my high speed seems sluggish so probably not you.

From Windows XP computer at work, Explorer browser. it takes 2+ attempts to post a comment (same process as above, but has been happening for weeks & often takes more tries). Also, on the comments page, I get a warning about untrusted information or something, and that's the profile pics for those who've got a profile here. Everything's slow, but that's definitely our IT department's fault (all websites load pretty slow, and since you have a lot of graphics... well, it keeps me off except at lunchtime ). If I click on an archived page, the comments don't show up until I do a refresh. Might be just because at work we're stuck with antiquated hardware & software...

I'm picking up a new Mac laptop imminently; I'll check everything out from there once it's up & running.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.3. on a Mac OS X 10.4.11 (I know, I should upgrade) and your homepage banner (where it says Cake Wrecks and it links to the homepage address) is positioned a bit low, so it's overlapping with today's post title...

Just thought I'd let you know!

theangelJean said...

Hey Jen and John,
Are you still tweaking?

Noticed two things today after reading the new post ... One, in the single post page that I get sent to from my Live Bookmark, with the comments listed below the post, the comments text appears black on the dark blue background. Names of people which are links show up in the light blue link colour, while names of people without links are black. I think previously there was a contrast box behind the comments, but I can't go back and compare now, can I ...

And two, if there was supposed to be an Epbot ad in there like there used to be, I don't see it now. For whatever reason, it's not appearing.

Still using Firefox 3.6.3 on Windows 7 (woops, not Vista) without any ad-blocking. The other ads show up fine.

Your post showed up in my Google RSS yesterday, and it appears it was actually posted Tuesday?

Also the banner is dropped down into the post, if that makes sense. The Cake Wrecks logo is behind the links "Home Press FAQ etc." and the carrot jockeys are slightly hidden by the search field. It's like the posts are on a transparency and the transparency has slid out of place against the background.

I guess I'm late but... if it still useful for you, I've seen your blog using:

*Windows + Firefox = Good
*Mac OS X + Safari = Good
*Mac OS X + Firefox = Good
*Mac OS X + Opera = Good
*Ubuntu + Firefox = Good
*Ubuntu + Opera = Good
*Ubuntu + Midori = Good

In Firefox I use AdBlock+FlashBlock+NoScript and no problems. I also play with the settings a bit to make it quicker and it pays, though it's still quicker when I load it with Midori.

theangelJean said...

I guess you're still tweaking, because the comments now look great in Firefox 3.6.3/Windows 7/no adblock/Norton 360. :) Light blue link text, white comment text, mid blue boxes all appearing correctly. Also I haven't had any problems the whole time with the Cake Wrecks title picture alignment (and I like it a lot!). The ad above the page still aligns left on my wide screen while absolutely everything else is centred nicely, but no big deal.

Good luck with the tweaking, hope it's nearly finished!

Everything works great here. I'm just purely excited to hear so many Princess Bride quotes and I wanted to share that.
Also,@Nicky, what's a droid?

Thumbs up for including Galaxy Quest AND The Princess Bride quotes. : ) Oh, and far as I can tell, everything's fine. We're all fine, here. Thank you. How are you?

LOVE the Princess Bride reference! I live for them! Also, no problems on a Mac with either Safari or Firefox.
