Cake Wrecks: The Music Video

Saturday, March 20, 2010

To fully appreciate the amazing awesomeness of today's fan feature, you need to be familiar with the Lazy Town song and video, "Cookin' By the Book." Don't know it? Then go here to watch the clip - it's surprisingly catchy.

Ok, everyone caught up? Good. Now, behold: WRECKIN' BY THE BOOK!

This inspired homage was written by Carrie Dahlby for The Funny Music Project, a regular contributor to the Dr. Demento show. (You can't ask for better credentials than that, can you?) This group of genius musicians publishes new comedy songs and/or videos every week, and if you head over there now you can download "Wreckin' by the Book" for free!

I recommend playing it over and over again until your kids beg for mercy. Then make up a little dance to go with it. Something I can do. So, lots of awkward swaying and off-beat clapping. Yeah. That'd be awesome.

A great big wrecky "THAK YOU" to Carrie, Luke, and their whole madcap team for making my week. You guys wreck AND rock.

And because they're hilarious and must be read to be fully appreciated, here are the lyrics:

Shoebox:
I pile on the frosting
In brown and fuchsia lumps
This work is so exhausting
That my spelling talent slumps

Chris:
I'll wish you "heppy bertty"
Or "Happy Hallydays"
Or "Happy Falker Satherhood"
For this year's Father's Day...

Carrie:
It's a piece of cake to make a wrecky cake
Just be a little lazy
Don't gotta do the cooking by the book
Just make it weird and crazy
Never use a classy recipe
Just gob on frosting daisies
If you throw away your cooking book, then you'll wreck a cake
We've got our Cake Wreck made
Our Carrot Jockeys cake
Finally it's time to wreck a cake

Devo:
Wrecking cakes has its own science
Quotation marks abound
Decorate with raw defiance
Making chocolate fecal mounds

Wyngarde:
Don't tell me "I want sprinkles"
If that is what you want
I'll squeeze out "I want sprinkles"
In a pretty frosting font

Carrie:
It's a piece of cake to make a wrecky cake
Cake wrecks dot com will tell you
You also gotta buy her funny book
That Amazon will sell you
You do not hafta be the "Ace of Cakes"
Just make a fondant fish stew
If you do the wreckin' by the book, then you'll wreck a cake
On Superbowl Sunday
We'll make a wrecky cake
Finally it's time to wreck a cake
And on our wedding day
We'll make a wrecky cake
Finally it's time to wreck a --

Luke:
Break it down, Jen! Show all bakeries why
They should have a spelling test before hiring some guy!
Grab some cupcakes, slather icing inch high,
Make a Curious George that'll make a kid cry!
That pink tarantula? That's a cake wreck!
That daffodil pony? That's a cake wreck!
That flaming armadillo? That's a cake wreck!
That groom's slab of beef? That's a cake wreck!

Carrie: Luke:
It's a piece of cake to make a wrecky cake - What!?
Just be a little lazy - Okay!
Don't gotta do the cooking by the book - What!?
Just make it weird and crazy - Yeah!
Never use a classy recipe - Cake!?
Just gob on frosting daisies - Wreck!
If you throw away your cooking book - Yeah!
Then you'll wreck a cake

Luke:
Cake wrecks dot blogspot dot com
Has the cakes that are the bomb!
Army men like Vietnam?
Made by pros, not by your Mom!
Naked Mohawk baby carrot jockeys rule the world
In a vortex of doom, trapped inside a puce swirl!
It makes your head spin, like you're on a Tilt-A-Whirl!
I saw Darth Vader with a baby, "It's A Girl!"

Carrie:
You gotta do the wreckin' by the book! Cake!

Luke:
Yeah!!!

Note: If you don't recognize all of the Wrecks in the video, that's because many of them are from the book. Did you know that 75% of the book is new Wreckage? And that the book is less than $10 on Amazon? Huh? Didja? Didja?

You did?

Oh. Well, good, then.

Funny! :) Just watched this vid. from yesterday's comments. Gah. It's still swimming in MY MIND!!!

How cool! Your very own theme song.

Sadly, I didn't have to familiarize myself with the Lazy Town orginal....I have suffered through it many time! Now I might actually enjoy it, because I will think of this HILARIOUS song and laugh:)

There are no words to properly express how amazing this is. I have always had a nostalgic love for this song, (I usually sing it every time I bake!) and I LOVE music parodies. Hilarious!

Rock and Roll. That was awesome! My jaw was on the floor so long that my son asked, "Are you ok, Mom?" LOL!

Keep them coming Jen, you rock!

That was great. Of course, it's not just parodying "Cooking by the Book," but specifically the L'il Jon mashup, which is already brilliant.

I won't embed because the language is beyond NSFW, but it can be found here.

If I hadn't already spent hours on my birthday waiting in line to meet you and get my book signed, I would run out and buy it! This is so hilarious!!

Like Kelli @ RTSM, I didn't have to familiarize myself with the original "Lazy Town" tune. But yours is infinitely better. And the puppets in your video are less creepy.

Thank goodness they threw in the Lil Jon bit. I can't get enough of the remix.

Thank you, finally soemthing to distract frowm the awfulness that is Lazy Town. A highly suspect programme if ever there was one!

That is brilliant! My video-making class of 11-12 year olds used the original song in their "Revenge of Cake Boy" video last year. I tortured them with the song over and over - wait til I show them this one! hee hee

Sara @ Life With the Two said...

This makes the fact that I already (unfortunately) know the original lyrics that much more bearable!

Awesome!

That is awesome! I too already knew the LazyTown song, lol!

Absolute ART WORK. Best homage video EVAH!! (And that's not just because I have a crush on Sporticus, and love the original version of that song... *nervous giggle*

Although, I have to say, I don't remember the rastafarian rapper in the original version, so this version just takes it a step up!

That is the funniest song I've ever seen. *picks self up off floor*

O. M. GIZZLE!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

Jen (and John), THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for the inspiration, the kind words and the plug. :) I hope I get to meet you guys someday.

Sarah K, I've been trying and trying to download that ringtone after signing up for a Myxer login, but I can't get it to work. Having my own song as a ringtone would be super sweet. :)

And to everyone else, thank you also for the kind words. You're totally making my weekend. :)

The FuMP + Cakewrecks = Much awesomeness!

For those who don't recognize the "rapper" part of this video, it's from "The Most Improbable Li'l Jon Mashup Ever" on CollegeHumor. If you like the original, you should check out the mashup (if my link doesn't work, go to collegehumor.com and look it up). It's absolutely hilarious! (Note that it is, as an earlier commenter noted, extremely NSFW)

Wow--THAT was a wild & crazy ride.
I clicked the "go here," and watched the video...
Then, I started to write a comment... and suddenly I noticed that I was back in 2009. (!!!)
Freaky! My own lttle Twilight- Zoney time warp. =^@.@^=
The "DOH!" moment: I was commenting on the OLDER post, fer cryin' out loud.
I know I'm getting senile...but I didn't *think* I was going crazy, too.
Now I do.
ANYway, that was awesomely awesome and too cool for school...or something like that!
I think you should do a package deal--include the video commercial with the book!!!
What a marketing strategy! What genius! A twofer! A BOGO! A--aww, shut up, me!
I love you guys. *sniff*

The Lazy Town version was kinda creepy but I LOVED the Cake Wrecks one. Also the Wrecky puppets are funny and not mildly terrifying. For every website a themesong!

That is awesome!!!

After watching this, my four-year-old asked, "Mommy, will you make me a cake?"

Love the vid!

What, am I the only person who likes the original? Better, even.
Honestly, I like parody music, but there's a difference between 'one listen and some chuckling, maybe' and 'going on my MP3 player and singing along', and this is more in the one listen category. Honestly, primarily because of the music quality: putting on funny voices affects music quality. I don't honestly known if Ziggy's voice actor is a better singer than Shoebox's, but Ziggy is definitely a better singer than Shoebox.

I love Cake Wrecks and read it to my kids. It's like a bed time story with cake. The kids adore Lazy Town, no mater how creepy it is. I have had nightmares about Sporticus.
Somehow,, the two together as a hand puppet parody is simply perfect. The kids and I bonded over this. Thank you.

I nearly forgot, my husband loved it for the lil'john overtones, too. You know you are just awesome, right?

Sara said...

My oh so beloved (and fump addict) husband showed me this a day or two ago...he knows how much I love the wreckitude! This is awesome, congrats Jenn!

I believe that last inscription is "Happy WTF?" am I right? >.> Love the video, hehe.

Luke Ski said...

To SarahPants5, and all, at the end I was attempting to write "Happy Falker Satherhood", but it ended up being "Happy SalWTF?" I'm very happy you all enjoyed the video so much! :) - the great Luke Ski

You know you've made it when they're making funny videos about you!

Allo!

Love love love the blog and I do have to say that I thought Friday's post was really really funny and inoffensive.

I too thought of those crazy tanned bodybuilders who look like they literally bake themselves to a lovely brown crisp before oiling themselves up to get on stage.

And I'm a black person.

Keep up the good work and don't let the easily offended get you down! Lots of people LIVE to be offended!

(I know this comment isn't relevant to this video, which I thought was hilarious, but I just wanted to let you know that I got the joke and appreciated it in a public forum :) )

I just showed this to my almost 7-year-old who is a huge fan of Lazytown. While we were watching it (twice), she said she wants to make a cake wreck cake for her birthday this year. I think that's an excellent idea, but how will we ever choose WHICH cake wreck to make?

Mel said...

HAHAHA SO MUCH AWESOME.

I may be the only person to disagree, but a flaming armadillo cake is NOT a cake wreck. In the unlikely event that I ever open my own bakery, I think we'd sell only flaming armadillo cakes... because they go beyond your typical awesome.

My 3 year old daughter LOVES this video. When I sit at the computer, she says, "Mom can we watch the 'Throw Away a Cookin' Book' song? Then we won't be LAZY!"

Oh, and don't knock Shoebox's singing until you hear him do "What Your Parents Think All Your Music Sounds Like". His best song EVER!
