Sunday Sweets: Tickled Pink

Sunday, March 28, 2010

I'm not usually much of a girly girl, but something about today's Sweets make me yearn for petticoats and lollipops. So proceed with caution; there's potentially lethal sweetness ahead. ;)

Let's start with some retro chic:

(Sub'd by Pauline R., made by Sweety Darling)

Hooray for kitschy cakes!
(Is anyone else remembering certain art prints from their childhood?)

Right now it seems most little girls are all about the princesses. Here's a sweet way to make them happy without resorting to plastic tiaras in the icing:

(Sub'd by Jacki L., made by Cakes by Eve)

I've seen so many wrecked castle cakes using that plastic turret kit that I'm irrationally grateful to this baker for not using it. Heh.

And an even more elegant Princess design minus the actual princess:

(Sub'd by Shanna R., made by Jane Asher)

Look at the tiny details: the lantern, the pillow, the perfect swirl pattern to the wheels - that cake took some serious skill.

Here's a fun color combo:

(Made by Christine Thompson of Sugar Topped Creations)
That lime green really makes the pink pop; I like seeing unexpected color pairings.

Moving on to more grownup designs...

(Made by CW reader Tammy M.)

This is one of those rare cakes that makes me want to get the baking pans out again. I'm curious to try that big ball of daisies on top. (Although I'm guessing it must be a Styrofoam topper underneath to keep the weight manageable. Bakers? Do you concur?)

Proving that pink is not just for little girls:

(Made by Cake Central user arosstx)

I love this design. It's fantastic seeing what a master decorator can do with a simple square cake, isn't it?

I don't see much pink on today's wedding cakes - too feminine for most couples, perhaps? Or just too old-fashioned? Regardless, I thought this one was sweet without being over-the-top:

(Sub'd by Heidi M., made by Vanilla Pastry Studio)

Great flowers, great piping. I like that there are different shades of pink, too.

And last but not least, this pink-packed beauty shows that sometimes moderation is overrated:

Woohoo! Bring on the flowers!

The side view:
(Made by Holy Sweet)

I don't know how you'd eat it, but boy, is that pretty. I also like the way the birthday girl's name is stamped into the side. It's such a clean, modern alternative to piping. (Not to mention easier, which - let's be honest - is also a major point in its favor.)

These are all so stunning! Now I'm inspired to try a lovely cake for my Easter post (the daisy cake is absolutely the most inspiring to me)!! Thanks Jen!!

While the little girl who loved pink, pink, pink in me is resurfacing, the cake that really speaks to me is that Cinderella coach one. Wow! Love it! And I was a Sleeping Beauty rather than a Cinderella fan as a girl; I think I just switched teams thanks to that cake.

Kaye Prince said...

Gorgeous as always! I think I am partial to the pumpkin coach and the pretty little flowers on the last one! I only wish I had an 8th of this skill!

This is so pretty! I want one. I don't even want to eat it. I just want to ooh and ahh over it. Amy

i'm not much of a girly girl either, but Cinderella's Carriage is absolutely beautiful!!! amazing cakes!

Cher' Shots said...

They're all beautiful but that little coach with the mouse is absolutely "adorable!"

Cheryl said...

Oh I love those!!! I wish I knew how to make cakes like that so I could make a princess carriage cake like that for my daughter- amazing.

Jules AF said...

Cinderella's coach one was amaaazing.

Anonymous said...

The last one is my favorite!!!

Terry Lee said...

well, i am a girly girl ... so pink, pink, pink and princess-themed cakes are right up my pink, lacy, rosy alley.

love, love, love them all! difficult to choose a fave, but cinderella's coach is a contender. love the single glass slipper on the pillow!

sigh.

thanks for the pinkness today, jen.

The mouse on the coach cake is really freakin' cute, but the last cake is the one that really caught my eye. It's just... beautiful. I love the silver nonpareils and the way the name is stamped into the side. I could stare at those pictures for hours.

WV: joiess - "These cakes give me a joiess feeling inside!"

cryandwriteasong said...

Oops! My bad! They're silver dragées, not nonpareils. D'oh!

Nikki said...

I'm not usually a pink person, but that last one is gorgeous! Too many flowers is never enough!

AJ said...

The kitschy cake is AWESOME. I want that as wallpaper.

The animal on that first cake is plenty disturbing. Not only does that ferret (or whatever animal that's supposed to be) have an abnormally round head, a monstrously large eye, and an undersized snout, but it has no neck and its limbs and most of its torso have been chopped off.
Why isn't this one calssified as a wreck?

These were beautiful! Happy Sunday, indeed!

Gary said...

"I don't know how you'd eat it, but boy, is that pretty."

For me, this is the motto of the Sunday Sweets section of Cake Wrecks.

Some of the weekday Wrecks also make one say, "I don't know how you'd eat that," but for different reasons (remember the impacted colon Valentine's Day cake?).

These are all absolutely gorgeous. I especially love the wedding cake with all the pink flowers around it, and the green and pink 1st birthday cake. The sculpted cakes are simply too lovely to eat!

WV: unwar = love?

Jen said...

I laugh when people talk about pink being girly and feminine. Only a century ago, pink was considered to be a boy's color, and blue for girls.

-lisa- said...

I love today's theme ~ so sweet and feminine.

Joan said...

The princess in me LOVES all of these cakes!

Anonymous said...

These are all just GORGEOUS. Elegance and beauty across the board.

I particularly like that square bridal one. So simple, and yet something about it just says 'wow'.

Unknown said...

I'm not much for pink either, but I must say I did love that castle. Naturally I had to look up plastic turret wrecks. Ouch. The saddest part? Sometimes these wrecks were used in advertising for the kit.

Our Beautiful Life said...

Oh my...I want that Gerbera daisy cake to display in my house! One of my favorite flowers! I loved the princess cakes, too. :)

Amanda | Glittericity said...

That Cinderella carriage cake is beyond stunning! :o And yes, that last one is lovely. I'm not much of a pink person either, but wow. I bet that would also look amazing in slightly varying shades of blue, yellow/orange, or purple/lavender.

Anonymous said...

The flowers on the wedding third from the bottom remind me of the shell flowers that we used to make!

Anonymous said...

The Cinderella one is amazing. I'm dubious about the one with the fuzzy animal head, though. Is it supposed to be a weirdly shaped deer? I think that one's a wreck.

Carrietastic said...

Pink in every single cake = my favorite Sunday Sweets ever (minus the one that showed my pink wedding cake). :D I particularly love the last one made by Holy Sweets.

Elyse Martin said...

I think they're gorgeous, but, I'm sorry, all I could think was the the first looked like a decapitated deer head! "WHAM! His cappa is detated from his head!"

Emilie said...

all i can say is.... oooOOooo pink goes good with green....

theotherlion said...

I love the pink explosion! It makes me so happy. The pink and green one is also very fresh. Loving them.

Anonymous said...

I actually loved the first one... The nostalgia-value of the decoration is sweeter than the icing. LOL!!!
I guess I'm showing my age here, though, the generations after me won't appreciate retro art. LOL!!!!!

Unknown said...

Love, love, love that last one! So beautiful!

*swoon* love it, love it, love it, love 'em!

Thank you for sharing these.

janna said...

This pink-loving girly-girl loves them all - and particularly the last one!

Unknown said...

I find it sad that some of these people don't recognize the kitschy fawn on the first one. I'm only twenty, and I still remember seeing those in children's books and baby cards!

Then again, I'm all about the retro~

~ Peace and Love

Unknown said...

Wow... I love the first one, and the pumpkin coach. So pretty.

Anonymous said...

I know how they ate it- You see those beads? Their actually candies. My friends Aunt had a baby shower and we thought the cookies were decoration, and we saw some one eating one so we tried it. Its a hard candy.

Cat. said...

Ah, I adore the braiding around the tiers on the castle cake.

Kay said...

No day is complete without visiting this blog. And these cakes today are just beautiful!! But I can't believe that I'm the first one to say it... Those great Gerbera daisys? They're not on styrofoam. They're on... wait for it... EPCOT! ;)

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry but the squared cake is stepping in the border that divides a wreckage from a non wreckage. What a cool groom...
I have to say that I hate pink, and that I find terribly and painfully ironical to see my name in that over-flowered and hyper-pink cake

paul crik said...

sweet cakes all around! these cakes are truly killin'it, wrecks or not!

Ella said...

Wow, I'm not much of a girly girl either, but I loved those cakes, all so beautiful. The flowers, the coach, the castle all of them really amazing, such skill.

Arlene said...

All those cakes are so beautiful. I really loved that castle cake. It has my favorite colors on it and makes me wish I was a kid again just so I can have my own castle cake lol. Heck I might just get one anyways.

coeurdechoeur said...

This may be a bit blasphemous (Blasphe-me! Blasphe-you! Blasphe-everybody in the world!), but I think that the first cake, although very skillfully made and somewhat cute, is also more than a bit creepy. I look at it and see a very well-wrought disembodied head.

But the castle, pumpkin carriage, and wedding dress are simply darling.

WV: dochea - I don't care how cute it is, dochea give me a cake with a disembodied head on it.

For those who don't *get* the first one, back in the 60's there was a style of art that featured big-eyed cartoony animals. In today's context, they're a bit saccharine sweet, and almost creepy. But I like the retro sweetness of it... in small doses. ;)

The first pic in this post shows some of doe-eyed deer from then:

Wow, those sweets are SWEET! Love them all.
(I was the Anonymous yesterday who said that bracelet was BLINGIN')

Mary Kirkland said...

I liked most of those cakes, I have to say that I don't really like the first one. it kinda reminds me of Bambi's head on a cake. Kinda...

But that pretty wedding cake is just adorable and that last one right after that in all pink is just awesome.

Alysa said...

My favorite is Cinderella's carriage! So adorable!

I also love the Castle! Way better than my amateur castle cake that I made for my daughter's birthday (I sent you a pic a few weeks ago :)

Anonymous said...

That last one is really pretty, but looking at it makes my teeth hurt...

Trevor said...

I actually think that the gebera daisy cake could be real cake on top. I don't see why the cake couldn't support them if the gum paste is thin enough. Those PME cutters sure come in handy!

And not to be rude, but that one cake seems to have a slight leaning problem to it.

MistyK said...

Ok... so spit my water out on the princess one. A friend of mine threw me a baby shower on Saturday and my cake had the plastic tiara on it... and wand.

I was a child in the 60s, and believe me, they were creepy then, too. Even worse were the kids with huge eyes and (often) no mouths or no noses.

Brendan said...

I am not a pink person at all (I am down with fuchsia though) so I didn't care for any of the cakes at first...I mean they were cute, and definitely well-made, and all very skillful and great and perfect for people who like that sort of thing, but...totally not my style.

But the last one - now that is really something. I hate pink and I like that cake. That's saying a lot.

Wait, the Cinderella coach was made by Jane Asher? As in, the used-to-be-engaged-to-Paul-McCartney Jane Asher?

Yes, according to wikipedia, she makes cakes now. Who knew?!

John Sperry said...

Thank you for acknowledging that some people like both traditional and overly-girly things. :) I absolutely love the last one, it makes me want to have it, but I'd be afraid to eat it!

I LOVE the birthday cake, but I honestly question the sanity of people who can afford to plop down hundreds of dollars on a first birthday cake. Srsly, how much did that run mom and dad??
I luuurve the dear, though -- reminds me of Mark Ryden, which I know is totally un-cute and not girly at all, but oh, so cool!

Beth H said...

I adore the gerbera daisy cake! WOW!

Unknown said...

Of course that is Jane Asher, former girlfriend of Paul McCartney of The Beatles!!!! Clearly has always had good, if a bit on the sweetish side, taste.

The doe-eyed deer cake reminded me of these awesome magnets I got for my sister-in-law's birthday.

Those darn 40s and 50s with their illustrations: cute, and then some!

holy CUTENESS. love the party ball with all the flowers. i'm thinkin' you're right, jen... styro-ball? that would be a very heavy topper, and tough to get it so perfectly spherical and balanced??

I see sooooo much pink here in Utah! Haha, I've got nothing against pink, it's one of my favorites, but I agree it just seems a bit much for a wedding. Especially when it's the only color (+ white, of course).

Anyway, I know girls that somehow managed to get their husbands, groomsmen, and male relatives to wear full on bright, HOT pink vests and ties or details.

I love the retro design on the first, I remember my grandma's crib that I would sleep in when little had a design almost exactly like that...brings back good memories.
