Sunday Sweets: Doctor Who

Sunday, August 16, 2009

I'm proud to say that I was raised by geeks. Star Trek and Doctor Who were staples in my household, and when I was little my folks even bundled me and my brother off to a Doctor Who event where I got to meet the late Jon Pertwee. At the time, of course, I was more impressed with the full-scale model of the TARDIS control room where I got to push ALL the buttons. Anyhoo, naturally it was only a matter of time until I found enough Whovian Sweets to justify a post. Ready? Here we go...

Presenting the most scrumptious looking Cyberman you will ever see:

Made by Truly Scrumptious , appropriately enough.

There's nothing more iconic than the TARDIS:

Found by Emily S. on diongillard's Flickr stream.

Here's one honoring my parents' favorite Doctor, Tom Baker:

Made by abbietabbie

This next on isn't actually cake; it's gingerbread. And K9 is looking suh-weet.

Found by Eric G, & made by LiveJournal member Therru

Lastly, here are some shops that know just how to dress a display window:

Posted on The Gallifreyan Embassy, but the bakery isn't listed.

Hannah C. found this display at The Cake Shop in Liverpool.

I don't know about you guys, but I would *totally* shop there. Why don't we have displays like this here in the States?

Update from john: This photo just came in from Leigh Henderson of theyrecoming.com. (She's the maker of the infamous thorax cake, so click the link at your own risk!)

Yup. It's cake. And no, she's not a professional. I can't believe it either. But that's not all...

It has an inside! She did it with mirrors and LEDs. Wow. Freakin' wow. (See more insanely detailed progress shots here.)

And did I mention wow?

I love the last cake, Martha Jones! She is my favorite. Thank you for showing the Doctor Who cakes, they totally made my day.

These cakes rock!!

why is gingerbread not cake?

I've just this weekend been rewatching end of Series 1 (9th Doctor) and Series 2-3 (yaaaaay 10th Doctor) to get my husband caught up on the David Tennant years. So this was both perfectly timed and perfectly awesome.

I definitely think I need a Tardis cake for my next birthday. :) Being in one's fourth decade is nothing compared to a Time Lord, right?

Shannon said...

Love the Tom Baker one! I would love to have a scarf like that. Too bad I hate knitting ;-)

Anonymous said...

Wow, these are all very impressive. I especially love the Ood!

Maddy said...

There must be some [here in the States] Have you watched 'cake boss' as they have some stunners.
Cheers

Kyr said...

Holy. Cow. I AM SO HAPPY!

I loooooooove Doctor Who, so this is the happiest day in my life!

I love the Ood, and the Abzorbaloff. K9 is looking cuter then ever, and I think the Cyberman looks like one of those cute Galactic Heroes action figures for toddlers (anyone know what I'm talking about?).

Erika U said...

THE DOCTOR! Those are all fantastic. K9 is on someone's kitchen table, if he was made by a talented amateur, I would like to befriend that person so they would make all my cakes for me.

Mel said...

These are awesome! I especially like the dalek one and I'm now wondering if I can get one just like that for my daughter's eighth birthday next week.

Michelle said...

WANT.

I love Doctor Who. Now I can't decide if I want an ice cream cake or a Doctor Who cake for my birthday :)

Trudi said...

That last cake is fab, but why is Martha white? At first I thought it was supposed to be John Barrowman (but there is no Capt. Jack tradmark coat)and the figure has bossoms! David Tennant never looked so cute!

Elaine said...

Thank you for posting these great cakes!!

flutefish said...

Oh, the Dalek cake! Love it!

Unknown said...

My birthday was on the 13th so this Sunday Sweets was so perfectly timed! I Love Doctor Who! Thanks for making my birthday even more special!

Anonymous said...

Love it!!!!!

I think I may have to make a Tardis for my husband (it's bigger on the inside).

MFonvielle said...

It's like you've gotten into my head- I just started re-watching episodes of Doctors 9 and 10! Now I have an excuse to eat cake while watching (but then, who needs an excuse for cake?)

I love these!! Kudos to being raised by geeks. My geekery had to develop on its own

Kenna said...

Oh my god, that Cyberman is TOO CUTE.

AliceBlue said...

I've never been prouder of being a total geek. I too grew up on Dr. Who and am loving seeing him everywhere now. Hmmm, my birthday is next month...good thing my husband took those cake decorating classes!

Unknown said...

Gingerbread is more of a biscuit really.

My sister made a TARDIS cake for a friend's birthday recently. Not as good as these, but she's not a professional.
The blue icing stained everything it touched. She had blue fingers for about a week. :D

Nearlydawn said...

We don't have bakery windows like that because being a geek-to-the-bone has only been cool for a small number of years.

Remember, when most of us were kids, Dr. was thought to be a cult thing... It seems now like everyone was secretly a fan. :)

Therru said...

I'm trying to make up my mind whether or not I should be flattered to be featured on a blog dedicated to cakes gone horribly, hilariously wrong... ^^

...I'm going with flattered. :)

(Also, I have to mention that LJ user "pnr" was my partner in this particular crime and deserves equal blame. :) )

str4y said...

Oh, those are awesome!
I have been rewatching series 1 of the new Who stuff with my neighbors, but they have been out of town and I've had to go a couple weeks w/o...getting serious withdrawal, and I thank you for helping relieve that.

Kari said...

I've never commented before but I just wanted to say that seeing today's post absolutely made my day! Doctor who is my favourite tv show and I absolutely love the Dalek cake!

Amanda Zoe said...

@ Leigh since it's about Time Travel, just have a 2nd anniversary of your 20th!

frigglesnitz said...

I, too, was brought up the right way and Tom Baker will always be my favorite Doctor. My mother refers to her purse as the TARDIS, my sister knit herself a replica scarf, and I use the "one for casual, one for best" line as often as possible. (The Doctor is given a physical by a very confused physican, who discovers the Doctor has two hearts.)
Oh, happy day!

Fanboy Wife said...

Are we going to see Star Trek cakes next week?

Lisa said...

Woohoo for Who!! Those're awesome!

I guess I'll be the first to say that I have no knowledge of anything you're talking about in this post. I have never been a geek (nor have I claimed to be one), but these cakes are pretty impressive!

Rebekah said...

The Cyberman is adorable.

The guy from Love and Monsters is frightning.

Those Ood are just plain cool!

The Lonely Assassin is disappointment

Anonymous said...

I doubt that's Freema/Martha, more likely to be either Catherine Tate or Michelle Ryan...

They are fantastic cakes, but £650 for the last one? My second hand car cost less than that!

Eli, Cattails Quilts said...

Thanks for this one! I'm a lng-time Doctor Who fan, I even have a hand-written letter from Tom Baker to me from when I was about 7 (I had written to him and asked him where I could get my own K-9).

Now my husband & I are getting my 9-year old daughter hooked on the show too! :D

Dharmamama said...

Why, yes, I would like to eat David Tennant, thank you!

Funny - I had just google imaged "Dr. Who cakes" a couple weeks ago, planning for my son's birthday. Lots of funky Tardises! (Tardii?)

I love the fourth Doctor cake the best, I think, but that final display window is amazing.

@ Amanda Zoe actually entered the fourth decade at 30...Not quite to the fifth yet! Seemed like a "doctor"-ish way to measure age, though!

SciFi Mama said...

So absolutely amazing! Ah, geeks raised by geeks. What a wonderful world it is! I'm proud to say I'm raising my daughter right. She watches Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who and thinks Hellboy is her best friend.

My hubby made me a TARDIS so I could dress up as Dr. Who last year. The last TORCHWOOD special was just a tease. And so was the Dr. Who. Not so sure about this new Doctor.

We don't get displays like that because not enough bakers were raised by Geeks.

Anonymous said...

I love you so much for these!

I was just doing my daily check of the site before settling down to a rainy afternoon marathon of 10th Doctor Who. How coincidental and awesome! Methinks there's some timey whimey business going on here. Or maybe someone reversed the polarity on my computer at just the right moment.

Now, off to the Ood planet...

(p.s. The scarf caught in the door of the TARDIS? Too cute! I'm young enough that Ten is my Doctor, but I love Tom Baker's Doctor as well.)

Old Fashion Halloween said...

Thank you for sharing. The Tom Baker scarf cake is wonderful!

I thought I was a geek, but alas, I am not. Trekkie stuff I get, but I have never seen or even heard of Doctor Who. BUT, I would SO take a big chomp out of those cakes and even the gingerbread. Yummy pup. Now, off to google Dr. Who...

Anonymous said...

Oh, happy, happy Who day! In our family's experience, Dr. Who is vastly underappreciated here in the US, which is a pity. My boys really like both Tom Baker and David Tennant as Doctors, but Tennant is the one I'd travel through time and space with. Kinda sad to see him leaving. Anyway, I made not one but two TARDIS cakes for my oldest boy's last birthday, one for practice and one for real. They're not easy to do, and I'll probably never do it again. Thanks for a brilliant Sunday Sweets!

Debbie Culpepper said...

Those cakes are all bloody amazing. I LOVE DR. WHO!!!!

Glory von Hathor said...

Defo Martha - her icing face just came up a wee bit pale. You can tell it's her in the enlarged image.

Oods make me feel sick. Luckily David Tennant is tasty in all his configurations.

Kae said...

You know what would make a great cake? The Adipose babies...firstly, because they're cute. And secondly, because too much cake can make you fat and they're made out of...well...fat.

I have been a Doctor Who fan for as long as I can remember. We used to watch Tom Baker on Saturday afternoons. My husband was never very interested, until the "new" series came out. We're both completely hooked. We've just been watching the latest Torchwood miniseries, and waiting impatiently for Doctor Who to start up again. These cakes are amazing!

Rachel said...

For all of my nerdiness I don't know anything about Doctor Who. But those are awesome cakes!

veiledrose said...

Oh my gosh! Love love love today's post!

Jasmine said...

Hee! These are brilliant. I love the little scarf poking out of the TARDIS.

Yankee1969 said...

Awesome cakes. That lase cake is pretty cool. The Ood and the angels from Blink. Nice. The Tom Baker Dalek looks like it partook of a bit too much cake, but I still love it. The Fourth Doctor was when I started watching. David Tennant rocks, though. I'm sad to see him leaving. Many awesome eps during his current stint.

Anonymous said...

I'm so ashamed to point this out because it shows how big of a nerd I am. At least I'm in good company.

On that last cake, the Ood rock, but shouldn't the Weeping Angel be covering it's eyes? It is being observed, after all.

d'oh!

I think this is my favorite Sunday Sweets yet.

I was destined to be a Doctor Who fan from the instant my parents named me Teagan Rebekah (after Tegan Jovanka)...

Thanks for posting the Doctor Who cakes! I just got back from a very long weekend at GenCon, and there were many Doctor Who sightings (last night I played a round of Are You a Werewolf? with Tom Baker himself...kind of) and an entire booth dedicated to merchandise, so these cakes fell at an appropriate time. :)

Oh my god, you are totally psychic! My birthday was yesterday and I was going to make a cake based on the first ever cake wreck I saw--Lady Cassandra O'Brien Dot Delta Seventeen! I had my sheet cake (in carrot) all set up on the counter, and the first layer of icing on, when my sister called to wish me a happy birthday. We got talking and I wandered off. When I came back, my three year-old was standing over the cake shoving randomly-grabbed handfuls into his mouth. I shrieked in horror, realized immediately that my limited skills were not going to fix this, and ended up with a lumpy, crumby lopsided birthday cake with random holes in it. WORST BIRTHDAY EVER!

As someone who was raised on Doctor Who (and Red Dwarf) since I was 5, I'm glad to see that you included some of the Old Who, as well as the New. I wish there could be a Master cake (preferably Richard Delgado-themed), although all I can think of is eating his head, which is not very pleasant. (Although one could eat his TARDIS when it was shaped as a clock, I suppose.)

Total love! Now, do Blake7! ... No, better not. The show itself was such a wreck, it would surely show through in cake form.

Nevertheless, I adore this Sunday Sweets post. The Daleks are definitive Who material no matter which Who, and of course I am partial to the scarf cake as well. Tom Baker was 'my' doctor, although I do admit that I somewhat prefer Jon Pertwee, but you can't fight nostalgia.

Despite Trek running deep in my veins, I have to say I'd choose a good run of 3rd or 4th Doctor 'Doctor Who' over it if I really had to.

This is probably the first and last time I'll say this, but that Cyberman is damned adorable. I absolutely love it.

I love the Tardis cakes too, my friend and I meant to make one (although not on that scale) for our birthdays but we lacked both a rectangular cake-tin and a oven that actually cooked.

I now have the urge to rewatch the episodes I have on DVD. Which, bizzarely, include a lot of Five. And Nine. And Ten. *snuggles*

Oh my God, I've never commented before but had to say this post is TOTALLY AWESOME. Seriously, you made my day. And, I too have just finished rewatching series 3 and 4 - definitely something timey wimey going on. I'm young enough that Nine is my doctor (sadly not represented in cake form) but I love the Ood on that display cake. I might have to see what the bakery on town could do on the Doctor Who front...I'm in the UK, and I think the reason it's so much more popular and not seen as hopelessly geeky is that it was on Saturday teatime BBC 1 for decades, so EVERYONE over a certain age watched it as a kid. And it's such a huge part of pop culture here that the rest of us grew up sort of immersed in it - there was no Doctor Who on the telly until I was 19, but when I was little I still knew about the Tardis and daleks and cybermen....apparently in a recent National Trust survey about twice as many 8 year olds could identify a dalek as could identify a barn owl :)

What a perfect post for my son's Sunday birthday! I've loved your blog a long time, but this was a special treat for our Doctor Who-loving family. All those cakes are amazing, especially the Tardis one you can see inside!

My husband and other son both joked about having Doctor Who themes for their birthdays earlier this year, but I couldn't find anything related in the US without waiting too long for mail order. Now I do have some Dalek goody bags and a toy Tardis for the next occasion...too bad I can't make a cake like any of these, and I doubt I could get one from a local bakery, either!

I love these! After catching Dr. Who on BBC America the past year or so, I finally broke down and started watching them in order just last week. Wonderful cakes! My whole family love Doctor Who! We actually found weeping angels in Asuncion, Paraguay ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/moldovanhome/2763472777/in/set-72157606643076177/

My daughter is studying Baking & Pastry Arts and your website is an inspiration (and caution!) I'm hoping for some Doctor Who and Buffy cakes!

As the maker of the last cake, I just wanted to pass along a link to my website, where you see more photos of the cake, including some post-cutting views that prove that it is, in fact, made of cake. I'm working on a full writeup of the construction process, which I hope to have done in the next couple days.

ZOMG SQUEEE!!!!!!

You've made this Whovian a very happy fangirl. That cyberman is just adorable (which is kinda wrong, but whatever). And so many lovely Tardises. I especially like the horizontal one with the little chrome door handles. And the gingerbread K-9. (And here I thought David Tennant's Doctor was the one who wanted to be ginger. [/pun] I'm so sorry.)

The trouble is I wouldn't want to eat them. I'd just want to gaze lovingly at them.

Absolutely fantastic cakes. I adore David Tennant so was very pleased to see him as a figurine!

Great blog,

These cakes are totally freaking sweet. I love Cake Tennant and Freema, and the TARDIS interior of the Cake Police Box is...just incredible. Each and every one was made by a genius! Bravo.

Now all we need are Torchwood cakes.
I think 1 of a stopwatch would be good! (If you got that joke, I love you and will you marry me? haha)

I LOVE Doctor Who and that Cyberman is, as Nine would say, fantastic!

I need to find a DW-loving man so that last cake can be our wedding cake. My mom would never approve though---she tried to watch the show one night and said it was "too weird." Yet she can sit through two hours of American Idol auditions. She can have those wailers, I'll take a Time Lord any day of the week!

Wow, I absolutely LOVE the one with Martha...wow, but that Abzorbaloff part reminds me of a really WEIRD episode. Well, I actually have Doctor Who to thank for getting me hooked on ELO, so "Love and Monsters" wasn't TOO bad. I love ELO!!

The Dalek cake picture posted at The Gallifreyan Embassy is from Imaginative Icing at 21 Lendal in York. I took a picture of the same cake when I visited in June 2005.
