Come Meet Jen, Who Often Refers To Herself in the Third Person

Friday, July 31, 2009

I've been hinting around about this on both Facebook and Twitter, and now I'm pleased to say I can finally share with you the details of the coming U.S. Cake Wrecks Book Tour!!

Exactly, Jae K.

Uh, you DID know there's a book, right? Because you've already pre-ordered your copy like a good Wrecky henchperson, right?

Well, even if you haven't purchased a copy I hope you'll come say hello (and then purchase a copy). It's not that I'd mind eating all the cake myself (did I mention there'll be cake?) and doing the Q&A with just John (and that John's coming?), but frankly, Andrews McMeel might. So please, block out these dates on your calenders now, and then buy any necessary plane tickets to get you there, because with today's plethora of transportation options I am NOT accepting "it was too far away" as an excuse. (Hey, if I have to get on a plane...)

Ok, ok, just to sweeten the deal further: How about a contest? And even better, one in which no talent is required and you get to eat the results?

Yes, exactly like this, Christine D. Thanks.
(The original is here.)

Yep, in a nutshell: just make a Wreckplica of your choice...but the catch is, it has to be on a cupcake. This is both to keep the entries a manageable size, and (bonus!) just to screw with you. The crowd favorites will win fabulous prizes, which admittedly I haven't decided on yet, but believe me, they're going to be fabulous.

There will also be cake for everyone (bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services in your city, let me know), so rest assured you will be leaving with a sugar buzz even if you don't bring an entry - but you still should anyway, so that those of us with icing in our hair don't mock you.

Yeah. Like that.

Ok, now that I have you positively salivating with anticipation, here's the schedule:

Orlando, FL
Borders (Winter Park)
Tuesday, September 22, 5PM
(NOTE: This will be my first public appearance EVER. So let me apologize in advance for doing the entire Q&A with a barf bag strategically placed on my lap.)

Portland, OR
Powell’s Books
Friday, September 25, 7:30 pm

Seattle, WA
Third Place Books
Saturday, September 26 6:30 pm

San Francisco, CA
Copperfield's Books (Petaluma)
Sunday, September 27 2:00 pm

Denver, CO
Tattered Cover Bookstore (Historic LoDo)
Tuesday, September 29 7:30 pm

Chicago, IL
Barnes & Noble (Old Orchard)
Thursday, October 1, 7:30 pm

Dallas, TX
Legacy Books
Saturday, October 3, 2:00 pm

Austin, TX
BookPeople
Sunday, October 4, 3:00 pm

Kansas City, MO
Barnes & Noble (Oak Park)
Monday, October 5, 6:00 pm
(NOTE: Yes, technically this is not in Missouri; it's in Kansas. I think these are listed by the closest major city, if that helps explain it any.)

Bethesda, MD
Barnes & Noble
Tuesday, October 6, 7:00 pm

New York, NY
Barnes & Noble (Greenwich Village)
Wednesday, October 7, 7:30 pm

I should mention that this tour started out with only 5 stops, and has grown to what it is now partly due to your exuberant responses on Facebook. So if you feel that some crime of omission has been committed here, by all means, tell me in the comments.

I'd also like to apologize to my international readers, since as you can see this tour is limited to the U.S. Given my dislike of flying in general - and long flights in particular - I have a hard time feeling TOO bad about this, but I am sorry I won't be able to meet all you lovelies in Australia, the UK, Japan, etc. We may try to stream one of the Q&A sessions online for you, so stay tuned.

And finally, if you think you might join us at one of the venues above, please RSVP - even if it's with a "maybe" - by clicking on the city name. This will help us figure out how much cake, prizes, chairs, etc. to have on hand.

Thanks, guys! I look forward to meeting many of you soon!

UPDATE: WOW. Thanks for the frenzied amount of feedback - I knew I could count on you Wreckies to speak your mind! Just remember that *I* am not the one booking this tour, so no accusing me of hatin' on the southeast/northeast, Ok? And rest assured, the powers-that-be are reading your comments here, so I for one have faith that - no matter what happens - I can always blame the outcome on them. :D

Jen, if you're going from Dallas to Kansas City, you COULD make a stop in Oklahoma City! I mean, you'll pass right through it!

Boston!!!! Where is Boston on the list???

Carol said...

We wish you were coming to Boston! The Harvard Square Bookstore or Porter Square Books would be excellent spots for you. Esp the Harvard Square Bookstore's monthly Winedown event -- it's usually is in conjunction with a food related book.

another vote for Hot-lanta (aka Atlanta)

We'd love to see you in the REAL South.

Keep up the funny...no pressure!

Heather said...

Nice. Powell's in Portland is the best book store on the face of the earth. Make sure you explore it a little, it's awesome.

I can't go though :( I'm going to be in germany, but have fun! Portland is great. I hope you have a little bit of time to check out the city.

Emily said...

So Cal stop please?
Preferably San Diego, but hell, I might drive to LA for this.

Anonymous said...

What?!? No Spokane, Grand Island, Duluth, Pueblo, Mobile, OR Roanoke?!?! I can't believe it!!!

Relax folks, the tour for book #2 will be much bigger!

Congrats guys, I am so proud of you!

Becky

Katie said...

Come to Atlanta! We're a major city, we love cake (and Cakewrecks, we make fantastic cupcakes...it'll be a good decision, promise :)

Anonymous said...

Boston, Boston, Boston! If they can send you to Portland and Seattle, Dallas and Austin, clearly you can do Boston in addition to NYC. Pleeeeaaaazzzzz, lovely publishers?

I am already planning my wreckie cupcake, and it would be rough having to transport it all the way to NYC.

H-Town love said...

You are going to Dallas AND Austin but can't make it to Houston? The fourth largest city in the US is too good for you, is that it? I'll come (with friends, I promise I have friends) if you make just one small little detour...

Anna Weaver Lopiccolo said...

Why aren't you coming to Hawaii? If you're in LA it's only a 5 hour flight.

Don't make me write a whiny icing comment on a pineapple upside down cake.

jenny said...

you are the funniest person alive. I can't wait to give you a hand shake or an awkward hug/sob in Petaluma!!

Wish you were coming to Toledo, OH or Detroit...I'd be there in a heartbeat!

I might make Bethesda, MD but don't want to put my email out there. If I do make it, I will try to drag one or two people with me

Hey, Jen, Oak Park is NOT in Missouri! It's in Overland Park, KANSAS! I know because I'll be there waiting for you!

kyuubified said...

Los Angeles may be pretty lonely without your presence.

P.S. I found it pretty appropriate that the captcha for my comment was "beers". See, alcoholism moves in fast!

Ashley Pepitone said...

Come to Atlanta pleeeeeease! I have the sudden urge to fit a letter of resignation on a cupcake.

Anonymous said...

Putting in a vote for the Detroit/Southeast Michigan area. We need funny cakes! And we have the original Borders in Ann Arbor. Heck, even Toledo, OH would do.

Amy

Anonymous said...

What about Ohio?!! PLEASE!! I'll even settle for somewhere within a couple hours of driving distance!

Karen said...

Add me to the list of folks begging for a stop in Richmond, VA. Pleeeease.

How about someplace closer to Central New York, there's more to love about NY than just the Big Apple, I promise!

us Cincinnatians would welcome you warmly :)

i just wish that you guys were coming to massachusetts!! New York, however awesome, is just too far of a drive for one day. :(

Hey, powers-that-be! I live 14 hours away from the *closest* city. But ATLANTA is only 2 hours away. Totally worth the drive. C'mon!

ATLANTA!

ATLANTA!

ATLANTA!

Salt Lake City, UT
Monday, September 28?

It's already in between San Francisco and Denver and you have an extra day for it!

Another vote for Atlanta!

I vote for Houston!

Jean said...

Woot! You're coming to Dallas on my birthday; which is really convenient since I live in the Dallas area, not convenient that we're moving to Oklahoma in September! I may have to make a special trip back for this.

Karen said...

Oh my goodness! You're not coming to New England!! Specifically Rhode Island =) Have a blast on your tour though and I hope to see the next round!! ~Karen

What about Boston?

Theatre Geek said...

We need you to come down to Lake Charles, LA! We're always left out because we're the "little city," even though we're Louisiana's fifth largest city!

We've got a GREAT Books-A-Million in town!

I know people love your blog . . . and at the bookstore is where you find people that love this stuff!

Chey said...

First of all, CONGRATS!

Second of all, are you SURE you don't wanna take a trip down to the fabulous Florida Keys (c'mon, we're in the same state!) and have a nice vacation and an impromptu signing in the Key West Borders? ;3 I know I could talk my manager into it...xD

I'm just kidding. But seriously, BEST OF LUCK on your tour, and I promise to make sure lots of customers buy it when it comes out. ;D

word verification: mucha - I'm mucha excited for the Cake Wrecks book!

You should come to Atlanta! We love cake!!

As a resident of Ky, I would happily accept a stop in Ky, Tn, Va, Wv, or Oh. See how reasonable I am? :)

Jennifer said...

Come to Cincinnati!
Sorry, that sounds like a command.
Please, come to Cincinnati. Better?

I'm gonna second Suzyhomemaker's suggestion Nashville or Louisville! I live in Knoxville, so neither would be too far for me to drive!

Kolena locksa said...

Jen! You need to come to Phoenix!

Anonymous said...

Come to Houston, TX!! It's in between your Dallas and Austin stops so it's not out of your way at all! Plus it's the 4th largest city in the USA so you're bound to get a huge crowd of fans!

DAMN DARN DANGIT....

I used to live within WALKING DISTANCE OF THE BORDERS BOOKSTORE IN WINTER PARK (Orlando).

This may be the first (and last) time I've regretted my decision to move to South Dakota.

Since I don't want you to live with that guilt of making me regret my choice to relocate, I'll offer you a deal. Cancel Kansas City, re-book it in Omaha, NE. That cuts it down to a manageable 3 hour drive for me and only a 3-4 hour drive north of Kansas City (making it manageable for anybody in KC who is REALLY a fan) and it's still a big enough city that it's worth your time.

Right? RIGHT???

Come on, KC people....I've got to drive 45 minutes just to go GROCERY SHOPPING, and I don't even want to discuss what I've got to go through to buy the specialty dog food my friggin' allergy-prone dog has to eat. Cut me a break, for once....tell Jen and her Powers That Be that you'll eagerly drive up to Omaha just so us Dakotans can have a chance at seeing her too :).

Word verification? "cessenth"
As in, "This is probably the cessenth time I've got to miss something I'd really like to catch, just becuase people tend to forget that South Dakota exists." Show some love for the rectangle states, for crying out loud!!!!
(WAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!)

Jenna said...

Pretty please come to Philadelphia! The City of Brotherly Love needs wrecking, if you ask me.

Anonymous said...

Charlotte, NC! Or if I have to, I could make the drive all the way to atlanta! But at least somewhere in the general vicinity!

Any love for Hawaii? We neeeed you!

Too bad you can't come to Canada, I'm a HUGE fan (from Ontario :( ) and even though I BEGGED my parents (literally, I got down on my hands and knees) to take me to NY or something, they said no. WAAAH!
Note: I'm not blaming you, I'm just commenting...

Thanks for the awesome Wrecks over the years, though!

PS: My parents are Star Trek fans too!

Melanie said...

omigoshomigoshomigosh your coming to Portland. I'm beside myself and all a-quiver. I might embarrass myself. Now I have to see if I can choose one cacke above all the lovely wreckiness to make my wreckplica of.
EEEEEEE!
I love you.

You need to come to Boston! Pleeeaaase? We love you in Boston!

Here's another vote for Minneapolis/Saint Paul. The Mall Of America has a Barnes & Noble right on a large open space called the Rotunda, and they have hosted many a popular author/book series. Alton Brown, Harry Potter releases, local authors, and more -- it's a great place for a book party.

(First time commenter, long time reader!)

WV: feabi -- 'But we're coming to Chicago is a feabi(l) excuse because Chicago is an 8 hour drive away!'

Heavenly said...

Another vote for Los Angeles! Please! It really is a glaring omission of the tour schedule. We are the home of Falker Satherhood. Come on!

Taelor-Raye said...

My mom and I started crying when we saw that you aren't coming to Phoenix! Anyways, have fun on your tour!

Alicia Foodycat said...

You know that pre-ordering makes books look less popular in the ratings? I heard this from an author - what we need to do is everyone order it ON the release date and it rockets into the best sellers.

BluBug said...

Ummmm... THE SOUTH?

Texas doesn't count!

South Carolina would be a decent compromise for NC and GA folks.

Emily said...

Hope my wreckplica doesn't get ruined on the train ride into NY! but I wish the tour was coming to someplace closer...*cough*philadelphia*cough*

rhilborn said...

I have some ideas for my wreck cupcake but I can only follow through if you add Nashville, TN to your tour. How 'bout "the powers that be"?

Anonymous said...

I'll be in San Fran!

Serena said...

Please, please, please, PLEASE!!!! come to Michigan! I don't think I can convince my Hubby we need to drive to Chicago...
But, I have just over 2 months to convince him. :-D

The South always gets the shaft!! Come to New Orleans!!

sillyshelly said...

you should stop in st. augustine after orlando!

Tyler said...

I'm also bummed that you won't be making a stop in Southern California.

It was especially disappointing after reading about the wreckplica contest. I was already planning my cupcakes...

Michigan is pretty awesome. We need you and all your cakie-goodness!

I don't doubt it's already been said, but, PHILLYYYYY!!!!

GASP! What about CANADA?!?!?! It could in theory be within driving range, I mean Toronto is a big place... and so is Kitchener Waterloo! I mean, the birthplace of the Blackberry! How could you NOT come visit us here!

Hey - how about Nashville!!!!

Angie said...

Long Beach! Come on, California is a big state, especially since it's kind of long and narrow, relatively speaking. [cough] San Francisco's a great city but it's like 400 miles away. :( Long Beach is great -- a thriving, renovated downtown (with a Borders on the south end of Pine, across from the convention center) and a diverse population and the beach right there where you could kick back after the signing. Come on, you know you want to visit! :D

You must come to Boston since it is the only city with its own cake the Boston Creme Pie which is also a bit of wreck since it is misnamed.

Powell’s Books

This brings me much joy. <3

...Which location? The one downtown or the one on Cedar Hills?

Not that I'm going to skip out if it's one or the other... It's just a question of cupcake transportation logistics.

I'll add another vote for Des Moines, Iowa!

wlkingbluepirate said...

Let this be another vote for Ohio. The Books & Co at The Greene in Dayton is a very popular book tour stop. You definitely need to add that to your tour. :)

We love you here. besides it is the 4th largest city in the country... consider the amount of fans that have to be in the city just based on its size.

Aw, and I would be moving to Hawaii in two weeks. To think I was so excited about moving to Hawaii...

Silly marriage, coming between me and cake...

I am pregnant, and due Oct. 4, so unless you come to Montgomery, AL, I'm gonna have to miss out. :'(

Another vote for Richmond, VA. Who knew so many Richmonders were Cake Wreckers?

Jody Werner said...

You are coming to MY town, just a few blocks from where I live! Your good taste Cakewrecks is eclipsed only by your good taste in book tour stops.

Jody - Petaluma, CA.

I agree about the South! Charlotte, NC, or Atlanta or Tennessee!! One of these PLEAAAASEEEE

I'd love to be there to support you! and eat delicious cake!

You know you want to come to the Minneapolis area at the end of your current dates! Pretty please!

Elizabeth Douglas said...

Powers that be, why aren't you cakewrecking the *southeast!?!?! *Shakes fist while both rueing and lamenting the fact that all appearances are too far away!*

*Florida soooo doesn't count!

Forget what the President said and come to Las Vegas. We can round up all the Wreckies, put them all up at the Bellagio and write the whole thing off. It's your duty as an American citizen.

Davis-Kidd in Memphis. Please!

What about Indianapolis, IN? It's not a small town, you know. All of the major authors go to Chicago (and who wants their hair in complete disarray from the windy city?), but skip Indianapolis. We are a beautiful city with lots to offer and many deserving fans! Let's hear it for Jen and John coming to Indy!!!

Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Cincinnati!!!
Need I say more?
And we could hook you up with some seriously yummy goodies! Buckeye Cupcakes anyone???

Sandi said...

Salt Lake City, please! The closest stops right now for me are 15 hours of driving away. I would happily drive 4 hours to Salt Lake City!

Beth said...

Looks like I'll ice you in for your Denver stop. Can't wait.

Albuquerque? :C

BOSTON BOSTON BOSTON BOSTON!
It's not that far of a trip from NY and will totally fix the "neglecting the northeast" problem you've got going on.
BOSTON BOSTON BOSTON!

Uuummm-where's ATLANTA on your itinerary??? Oh, I must have misread it - surely you couldn't skip ATLANTA, right??? I'll go back and read it again while I wait for my pre-ordered copy of the book here in ATLANTA!!!! You should be here too!

Catie said...

Salt Lake City would be AWESOME!! Believe me, you'd have a following. It seriously is right on the way to San Francisco. If not, Vegas is a great second choice. Also, a shout out to my native land...you gotta have an LA stop. For reals.

Breenah said...

You're actually coming to Kansas! I'm shocked and hope I can make it!

Kristen said...

Los Angeles!!! Puhleazeee.....

jdonaldson said...

Ummm. You might want to suggest to the people booking that you get another, more downtown Chicago date. Since two months away you already have 60 definites and 90 maybes, which would pretty much kill the store. Those are like, Harry Potter release numbers.

Also, anyone IN Chicago proper can't even get there by public transportation, which is why I can't come. A lot of people in major cities don't drive at all, so probably a ton of fans won't make it at all for that reason.

What about AZ!!!!???? :o(

Auntie M said...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to Phoenix! Arizona Adores you! my friends and I know our town is too small but will fill a bus and drive to Phoenix if you add it to your tour!

Ari said...

Oooh, SO unfair! I used to live an hour away from Portland, OR.

But now I live in Australia. :/

Come oooonnn, the flight isn't THAT long. Er...15 hours isn't THAT long, right?

Aussies love Cake Wrecks, too, ya know! Sydney's a great town! You'll forget the flight the instant you step off the plane! And other convincing stuff too!

Unknown said...

I was hoping to see you in Minneapolis! I promise to bring my friend's baby wearing her Mohawk Baby Carrot Jockey onesie we made for her, as well as a cupcake.

Stephanie said...

I would love a stop in NJ, you know, closer than NY, preferably South Jersey! :)

Stevie said...

How can you not come to Los Angeles??? :'( Lol

Anonymous said...

I can't believe you will make Austin and Dallas but not Houston!!! I am heartbroken. We are the 4th largest city in the US, so next tour you have to make it here.

Erin said...

Please please please come to Los Angeles!

BOSTON! Pllleeeeeaaaassssee? Please? Please? Please? With sprinkles on top? How about if I add airbrushing and drunken clowns, too? Say yes?

If not Beantown, how about Manchester NH (close to Vermont, Mass, Maine, and Canada) or Portland Maine? ANYWHERE in New England! And if not that (*sigh* with big puppy dog eyes), I'll go with the vote for ATLANTA, Ga. I am willing to make a third trip down there this year to see my mother if it means I could attend your event. See the sacrifices we'll make? You have FANS! -WM

HAHAHAHAHA PETALUMA = SF? HAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah. I know it's listed by "major city". But this and the whole "Kansas/Missouri" is making me seriously doubt the geography/marketing skills of your publishers. The total pop. is less than 60k! Even my tiny collegetown of Davis is bigger!

Anyways thanks for getting my hopes up that I might be able to add this on to an already scheduled SF trip (to ACTUAL SF) and then smashing them to bits with your complete lack of understanding what constitutes "SF", book tour people. Sheesh.

Oh. My. Cakewreck.
YES!
Definitely planning my cupcake wreck.
*Laughs evily*

You forgot L.A.!!!
And September 29 is my birthday too :,[

But oh well, I'll just have to wait for my book.
Hurrah!

I wish you'd make a stop in New Jersey after New York. You'd be surprised how many Rutgers students adore CW.
