Come Meet Jen, Who Often Refers To Herself in the Third Person

Friday, July 31, 2009

I've been hinting around about this on both Facebook and Twitter, and now I'm pleased to say I can finally share with you the details of the coming U.S. Cake Wrecks Book Tour!!

Exactly, Jae K.

Uh, you DID know there's a book, right? Because you've already pre-ordered your copy like a good Wrecky henchperson, right?

Well, even if you haven't purchased a copy I hope you'll come say hello (and then purchase a copy). It's not that I'd mind eating all the cake myself (did I mention there'll be cake?) and doing the Q&A with just John (and that John's coming?), but frankly, Andrews McMeel might. So please, block out these dates on your calenders now, and then buy any necessary plane tickets to get you there, because with today's plethora of transportation options I am NOT accepting "it was too far away" as an excuse. (Hey, if I have to get on a plane...)

Ok, ok, just to sweeten the deal further: How about a contest? And even better, one in which no talent is required and you get to eat the results?

Yes, exactly like this, Christine D. Thanks.
(The original is here.)

Yep, in a nutshell: just make a Wreckplica of your choice...but the catch is, it has to be on a cupcake. This is both to keep the entries a manageable size, and (bonus!) just to screw with you. The crowd favorites will win fabulous prizes, which admittedly I haven't decided on yet, but believe me, they're going to be fabulous.

There will also be cake for everyone (bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services in your city, let me know), so rest assured you will be leaving with a sugar buzz even if you don't bring an entry - but you still should anyway, so that those of us with icing in our hair don't mock you.

Yeah. Like that.

Ok, now that I have you positively salivating with anticipation, here's the schedule:

Orlando, FL
Borders (Winter Park)
Tuesday, September 22, 5PM
(NOTE: This will be my first public appearance EVER. So let me apologize in advance for doing the entire Q&A with a barf bag strategically placed on my lap.)

Portland, OR
Powell’s Books
Friday, September 25, 7:30 pm

Seattle, WA
Third Place Books
Saturday, September 26 6:30 pm

San Francisco, CA
Copperfield's Books (Petaluma)
Sunday, September 27 2:00 pm

Denver, CO
Tattered Cover Bookstore (Historic LoDo)
Tuesday, September 29 7:30 pm

Chicago, IL
Barnes & Noble (Old Orchard)
Thursday, October 1, 7:30 pm

Dallas, TX
Legacy Books
Saturday, October 3, 2:00 pm

Austin, TX
BookPeople
Sunday, October 4, 3:00 pm

Kansas City, MO
Barnes & Noble (Oak Park)
Monday, October 5, 6:00 pm
(NOTE: Yes, technically this is not in Missouri; it's in Kansas. I think these are listed by the closest major city, if that helps explain it any.)

Bethesda, MD
Barnes & Noble
Tuesday, October 6, 7:00 pm

New York, NY
Barnes & Noble (Greenwich Village)
Wednesday, October 7, 7:30 pm

I should mention that this tour started out with only 5 stops, and has grown to what it is now partly due to your exuberant responses on Facebook. So if you feel that some crime of omission has been committed here, by all means, tell me in the comments.

I'd also like to apologize to my international readers, since as you can see this tour is limited to the U.S. Given my dislike of flying in general - and long flights in particular - I have a hard time feeling TOO bad about this, but I am sorry I won't be able to meet all you lovelies in Australia, the UK, Japan, etc. We may try to stream one of the Q&A sessions online for you, so stay tuned.

And finally, if you think you might join us at one of the venues above, please RSVP - even if it's with a "maybe" - by clicking on the city name. This will help us figure out how much cake, prizes, chairs, etc. to have on hand.

Thanks, guys! I look forward to meeting many of you soon!

UPDATE: WOW. Thanks for the frenzied amount of feedback - I knew I could count on you Wreckies to speak your mind! Just remember that *I* am not the one booking this tour, so no accusing me of hatin' on the southeast/northeast, Ok? And rest assured, the powers-that-be are reading your comments here, so I for one have faith that - no matter what happens - I can always blame the outcome on them. :D

Ok, you definitely need somewhere in the middle of the south where all us southern fans can come meet our favorite blogger! However... After skimming through the comments I must say that I have to put in a vote for Alaska - I mean seriously, they must get left out all the time! :)

Tracy O said...

I want to vote for Atlanta, too! We love you here!!!

lil_apple said...

can't wait to meet you in NYC! its right up the street from my apt, but I'd totally trek to an outer borough too :)

GinnyP said...

Jen - the closest venue to me is San Francisco - STILL a 6 hour drive - but I can't RSVP because it isn't "clickable". If the event is on the Sunday and not too late in the day I can make it - would you please put me on the list?

Anonymous said...

I agree with the south comments! Come on, just because Orlando is "close" doesn't mean I can drive 10 hours (because planes have been banned in the family)!!! Tennessee, North Carolina, something to represent!!! Please!

Ace said...

Nashville? Please???

Anonymous said...

Yet another vote for Boston or at least New England! If you're not willing to fly or drive from NYC, you can take the train or the bus (including the cheap but always interesting Chinatown bus).
If you can't get into one of the bookstores in Cambridge, please try Brookline Booksmith, an excellent independent bookstore with a quirky sense of humor that'd be right up your ally. If there's enough demand, maybe you could even do your talk at the historic Coolidge Corner Theater.

Word verification: pudpari. I'm looking forward to the pudpari of new wrecks in the book!

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada isn't that far from New York. I doubt I can convince my husband to go to New York, he just doesn't understand these things. Next book you HAVE to come to Canada!

Could you come closer to St. Louis Missouri?
I would love to be able to come!

Carrie said...

Glad to see you're coming to Seattle!
I don't normally post comments on here, but with all the "I promise there will be cake" comments in this post, I have to ask....are you familiar with the video game Portal?

Nicole said...

hey, how 'bout detroit!!!

Anonymous said...

Little Rock, Memphis, or Nashville, please!!! We have BBQ--and you can visit Graceland! (and the other commenters are right, Texas and Florida do NOT count as 'The South'!)

Toronto is only like a 45 minute flight from New York!! Come visit your firends up north, eh?!

Kerry said...

Here's another request for you to visit Atlanta!

tchen said...

OK, I've never commented on any blog anywhere ever before, but I have been following Cake Wrecks basically since its inception.

Please please please "PLEASE" come to Boston! I will most lovingly make a Wreckplica for the occasion.

Any way you could stop near Indianapolis? Carmel, IN, for instance?

Las Vegas is a really good place for book tours.

We love books, cakes, and are generally wrecky in nature.

Sara Henry said...

Not even a mention of Canada? Not too far from Seattle.....you could drive from there insted of getting on another plane.
Oh well, I will still be a loyal follower, even if you can't come. I need my morning pick up.

Lisa said...

I so wish you would come to South Florida - West Palm Beach or Ft Lauderdale. Orlando is a drive for me - maybe stop by on the way back???

Keith K. said...

I'm so excited you are coming to Kansas City! As one commenter reported, the city is Overland Park, but the location is at Oak Park Mall, which i down the street from where I live. Silly misunderstanding. Moreover, I wanted to comment on the fact that it is Kansas City, Kansas and not Missouri. There is a slight difference. :)

Unknown said...

Des Moines, iowa, loves you, and we promise tpo bring tons of wreck-y cupcakes if you will come and visit us! Please? Oh, wait... "Please"? ; )

Nicki said...

I'd love to come to your appearance in San Francisco. Now, which wreck to wreck-plicate . . . decisions, decisions!

WV: supross--when you can't decide whether a wreck is just gross or super-gross

Manda said...

Your So close to Vancouver, when your in Seattle , you dont have to fly to get here.. Please come to Vancouver. We have cake here too.

VillageMom said...

My, the south is whiney with their "Orlando doesn't count" business. They've already got the best climates in the country and they still want more.

Another poster was right... Michigan needs the love. And we're trend-setters! We went to a recession long before the rest of the nation. Florida is trying to keep up and California is making a decent effort but we're at the bottom of the heap, baby!

Anonymous said...

Um, Boston? Hello? Pretty major city, I should say.

Anonymous said...

I'll never understand why people tour in Denver and not Phoenix. We're the 5th largest city and we're left off your tour. *pout*

Jennie said...

OOH OOH!! I'll see you in San Francisco, Jen!!! Yeeeehaaaawww!
(I'm excited)

Megan said...

Yea! I am driving in to Kansas City- already wrote it on the calendar. I am so going to be there and bringing a cupcake. Now to choose a wreck......

Rebecca said...

Somewhere in Alabama please!!! Birmingham is a big city or even Atlanta.

Tina said...

How about a stop in Massachusetts? Worcester, MA is right in the middle and there is a Barnes & Noble or a Border's right in Marlborough or Shrewsbury (both real close to Worcester).

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!

Matt G said...

No Los Angeles, or even San Diego? Las Vegas? That would at least give people extra reason to travel.

Good luck with the tour!

VeggieT said...

Well, this seems like the place for requests. And my request goes for Wichita, KS... It would be handier having a 1 hour drive as apposed to a 3 hour drive, considering the gas prices... just a thought.

Sara Jo said...

I just emailed Changing Hands in Tempe, Arizona and told them they should book you!

Philadelphia will miss you :(

Ooooooh. I know I'm just a lurker so you'll have no idea who I am, and I almost never go to signings. But THIS is one I want to go to. Jen,

I'm very sad that we will miss you here in the Los Angeles area.

You make me laugh EVERY single day. I've lost count as to the number of people who I've gotten "hooked" on your blog.

No stops in Georgia OR Tennessee?!? Raspberries!!! :( Atlanta, GA or Chattanooga, TN are both hotbeds of culinary (and wrecktastic) activity and should not be left out!!

WV: abirkin - I would stand out in the cold wearing nothing but abirkin to see you!! ;-)

Holey Carp! You're coming to my city on my birthday! I may just have to make a trip out just for that. Plus I do have a perfect cupcake wreck idea, but implementation could be difficult. Good thing I've got time to think!

Kerri said...

You must come to Boston! Just a short hop from NYC! Your trip could not be complete without a stop in the Bay State, and who could say no to New England in the fall????

kexline said...

I'm with Josh -- there are no stops in the southeast at all! (Orlando is not in the southeast.)

I'm sure plenty of people would love to see you in Atlanta. I would also be happy to drive to Huntsville or Chattanooga on a weekend, and I know who I'd bring along.

On further self-serving consideration, I also think that Atlanta is a big oversight because you often feature antiwrecks from Highland Bakery.

Jei said...

This is the first time I've ever commented, though I'm a HUGE fan. But... WHY CAN'T YOU COME TO CANADA? Admittedly I'm a hop, skip and a jump away from Seattle, but really.
Just squeeze Vancouver (BC) in ,at least. Or do a whole Canadian tour! Yeah. You're gonna have FREE CAKE, I guarantee you a good turnout here on the tundra.

Melissa said...

Come to the LA area! If you're already in San Fran, it's just a 45 minute flight. Vroman's, Diesel Brentwood, or BookSoup would be great venues!

Anonymous said...

L.A., L.A., L.A.!!

Please?

If you hit the major Cities that have big boards on "chowhound", you'll attract an avalanche of Foodies and sell an absolute flurry of books.

Chowhound people have absolute WARS about cupcakes. And for some reason PAstrami and Hamburgers. And Mission Burritos. I guess we have a lot of free time.

L.A. is a Major Chowhound city.

This probably isn't helpful, but, Andrews-McMeel did this with another favorite author of mine--they look at a map and think Petaluma is right there near San Francisco. But. A lot of the Bay Area population lives in a straight line south of San Fran, meaning we'd have to drive through the entire city to get there--we're talking 60 miles for me but three hours each way. Ouch.

Enough of that--congratulations on your book tour! Have a wonderful time!

Just an FYI, book tour stops are usually decided by publishers. They're expensive. Like insanely so. Most books today don't get a tour at all. A sad publishing fact, but true. And if you do get a tour, you get one with like 3 cities. Literally. (Haha.)

Here's a really good post about it. (not my own, just one I found on the web) http://lit.newcity.com/2009/07/28/book-partying-with-author-tours-waning-we-get-a-read-on-the-state-of-literary-events-in-chicago/

Every time an author I love comes to "Chicago", they're at Old Orchard. That's not Chicago. And it's dang far from where I live. But I'll try.

Do these book-tour-organizing people have some kind of beef with downtown Chicago, which is easily accessible via public transit for millions of potential book purchasers? Or do they just know the people by Old Orchard have money?

Sigh.

You know what, though? You're awesome. And you're going on a book tour. For your book. So I should haul my rear across the metro area to see you, because I'm not organized enough to write a whole frickin' book, and I admire you.

You should totally come to the Phoenix area. I mean, Arizona is right between California & Colorado... And I know of a few Wreckies here that would love to go!

Yippeee you'll be in Austin! Of course, it IS the SAME weekend as Austin City Limits, but lucky for you, bands I want to see don't start that day until 5, so I'll be there. Well, lucky for me, I suppose.

TENNESSEE!!!!!! How about Nashville or Memphis???? Sept. 18?

Nanette said...

Bring it to Tucson!

Brandi M. said...

Aww I was so excited but then I read the places you are touring. No Atlanta? That's ok though. You can't go every where.

I hope you have a lot of fun on your book tour. I'm looking forward to the book.

Looks like someone has beef with the southeast. Whats that all about?? {jumping up & down waving from Raleigh, NC}

Just because you are hating on the international scene doesn't mean you have to hate on Canada. Customs might be a pain but it's hardly a long ways away. Once you're in Seattle you're practically at Vancouver anyways.

I'd come to Seattle but I don't have a passport yet. I should really get on that but it's supposed to take ages for the paperwork to go through anyways. Stupid new border rules.

I counted 8 posts asking for a trip to Ohio! Soooo, here's the ninth... Somewhere in Cleveland if at all possible? Joseph Beth Booksellers in Legacy Village or perhaps Border's in La Place or Solon.... please please please try! I just graduated from Johnson and Wales with a degree in pastry arts and all I want to do is make wrecks! So, thanks for the inspiration... please come to Ohio!!!

Looove you and all you're doing!

no southeast?!! please come to nc!

You completely left off the southeast. I think that Memphis would be a prime spot.

I can't believe you aren't stopping in atlanta!

We do know how to read over here in Massachusetts. I think we have more bookstore than people. You should come to MA and we'll wreck up a cupcake good! Besides that, remember waaaay back I told you I had a dream about cake wrecks? that should be enough.

LoganB said...

As many others have said you need to visit Boston. I know you aren't booking it but drop some hints.

Wow, that is a crazy, crazy schedule you've got there. You're going to TIRED. When you get to Austin, I'll take you out for a margarita and some chips/queso.

Hey, How about Tampa/St.Pete? And could you make it a weekend? Your Sexy Suds decorator really wants to meet you and have the book signed... Maybe I will even re-create my "masterpiece". Although how I will do that in cupcake size is yet to be determined...

Sweet Sheezamageeza!!!

I was all excited when I read Powell's thinking "yeah, we can totally make it down there" and then I read Third Place Books, right up the street! :D you will have 2 very happy faces (no doubt more, but I can only account for 2 of us) in that crowd! Can't WAIT! :D

first off, my fiance is still after 5 minutes saying "one bon bon is poison" he wants one of those cakes! Second, what about us in the north east. New England loves you!

Hooray for the book! You should come to Minneapolis, though! The Mall of America is right by the airport, and if you have a layover in the Twin Cities, it's only logical to stop here. You could even invite Marjorie Johnson, the most winning-est baker in Minnesota State Fair history!

For the Seattle visit, I would really love to volunteer my bakery. www.CleverCakeStudio.com is the one that made the Indiana Jones Temple of Doom cake that you highlighted in a Sunday Sweet, so I'd love to thank you by providing a cake for the event! I will follow this up with an email.
