Which probably has you wondering, "Just how much more ridiculous can it get? It's a simple word! Sure, you might forget a letter, or switch a few up, but that's it, right?"
[shaking head] Oh, ye of little faith.
Why yes, yes it does.
And note how the 'q' was added on later, as if that somehow fixed the problem.
This may not be a huge error, but it's definitely one of the most fun to read out loud. Bipthday. It trips drunkenly off the tongue, don't you think?
Of course, there's the momentary distraction, and then there's this:
I love imagining what happened between the "t" and the "L." Some kind of digestive emergency? A phone order? Or was it just break time?
Speaking of imagination, you'll need yours to decipher this next one:
Regardless, Edgar must be one really colorful character.
This next one isn't so much switching letters around as it is playing word jumble with them:
This is why you don't order a cake when you have a cold:
And finally, what could very well be my new favorite (narrowly edging out "epi burf day"):
Bill F., Ashley J., Bev, Teresa V., Cassie P., Hannah W., & Lester H., great job. Period.

Note: For those of you keeping count, that's 18 different misspellings of "birthday" so far. Eighteen. Parents, if you have a new baby in the house, this could even be your yearly checklist. Just sayin'.

Barthy hahahahaha wtf!!
Barthy made me think of "barfy." I wonder what you could describe as "barfy."
Really hilarious -- the commentary is even funnier than the misspellings. Among your very best. Are all of the cake decorators in grocery stores non-English speakers?
What is all that "stuff" on top of the seventh cake? Looks like leftover pieces from other cakes. Oh, and by the way,
Happy berday to you
Happy berday to you
Happy berday, dear Edgar
Happy berday to you.
That "happy birsday" sounds like it might be an Oriental person trying to sound it out before its written..LOL
funny stuff Jen! Love this site!
It looks like "Marry Burdos Edgar" to me. Wonder if she's pretty?
Jen,
I want to thank you for your posts the last two days. I received a Birthday cake order today for Sat. I'm not paying close attention to spelling "Birthday" correctly so I don't embarrass myself on the child's Birthday cake.
I like how they tried to fix "boithday" by writing over it, but not in an obvious way where it looks like "birthday."
As far as the "Happy Birsday" one from Paris Baguette goes, I'm assuming that comes from one of their two Koreatown locations here in Los Angeles. (If you click on the picture, the package in the corner has Korean on it.) That makes the misspelling a bit more understandable, I think...
Now were these all by people on their first day on the job? Because this is a job where you have to spell that word every day, isn't it?
Happy Boithday! That's my new favorite inscription! I live in Jersey. We should adopt that as an official birthday slogan here. Meanwhile, what a happy little mobster cake, with pastel swirls and all. I wonder if there's a file in it for a jailbird recipient? happy birday, too.
Meanwhile, looking at Edgar's cake, all I could think of was, "Mmmm. Cheesecake." telltale score lines and all. And just for the record, cheesecake should not be violated with gel icing. It should have nuts, and chocolate shavings. we take our cheesecake seriously here in Jersey.
Meanwhile, Bipthday and Birsday vie for drunken orders, and Barthy just makes me wonder. Beautiful cake, except for the frozen feather, but who is this decorator? or, who is Barthy?
and finally, Birdthay. You know they probably charged at least $6 for that SLICE of cake seeing that it was a birthday dessert at a restaurant. Now we have to accuse the artistic pastry chefs of not being able to spell. But what a double exclamation point enthusiasm and a lovely G clef! I love how they give you so much whipped cream to disguise the fact that is one SKINNY piece of cheesecake.
wv. uptaphi. the non-English language some of these decorators apparently speak judging by their spelling difficulties.
Tricia, you make me wonder if some of these OTHER spellings could be sung. Bipthday, birdthay, birt, birdholq don't exactly trip off the tongue.
That Boithday cake needs to go swimmin' with da fishes.
Boithday's cake is cracked. very suspicious.
Also, the chocolate puddles pooling under the cheesecake in the restaurant looks like a hidden mickey.
Hahaha who knew Happy Birthday could be so difficult.
I would like to argue in defense of some of these decorators however.
Edgar's cake can be seen as "Birday" with an i with no dot, and the r is attached to the i, similar to cursive but clearly printed.
The gangster cake says "Birthday" with a very fancy r, so fancy that it has a weird loop thing going on at the top left edge of the letter.
Still, a cake should not be illegible. This blog is just hilarious in general. I commend you for your work.
It never ceases to amaze me how bad spelling can be. I am not perfect, but man this bad. Then again I see worse from college students sometimes. *sigh*
The Edgar cake looked like "Birdoz" to me.
WV: barli. Might be closer than some of these cakes...
These bring back fond (and by fond, I mean terrifying) memories of my husband's birthday a few years ago when the entire family got the stomach flu. We were SO sick. So sick that we even couldn't even LOOK at the cake much less eat it. We will forever refer to it as Daddy's Happy Barfday. Thanks for reminding me. No really... thanks.
Wow, when I first read what you said about the one with a cold, I thought to myself, "It's not bad enough they get the spelling of the most common word used for food decoration wrong, they're doing it while they have a cold and spreading all their nasty, nasty germies around? SICK!"
But then I reread it. D'oh!
You just gotta wonder: "How do these things happen?"
I'm waiting for "Happy Beerday", myself!
I have the commend the decorator on how well they formed the letters in Ashley's Happy Bipthday cake; it's actually quite impressive if you can look beyond the R->P error.
Also, I will join K.P. in supporting the defense that Boithday is actually spelled correctly, with a very fancy cursive 'r'.
Spelling errors make me sad.
"Put that little pine branch on your number 4 candle and smoke it."
This cracks me up. Hugely. :D
On my husband's birthday we went out for dinner and I told the waitress I'd like her to bring him a cake. Well, she brought a little cake, but it was the piped-in celebratory music that made us crack up, "Happy Birsday to you, happy birsday to you!" So it's not just spelled wrong, it's also sung and recorded wrong.
What's in the clear, plastic upside down cup on the 'Happy Birt Logan' cake?
I tried making the photo larger but I can't make out what it is.
To be fair, I think that first cake doesn't actually say "Birdholq." Upon closer inspection, I think the cake originally said, "Birdhd" and then someone tried to add a "y" which ended up looking more like a "q," yielding "Birdhdy" or "Birdhdq," which are still pretty hilarious. It's just that the line and circle of the "d" don't meet properly, and the add-on "y" is totally deformed.
"Happy Boithday" is like, the best one I've ever seen!! It's like a Three Stooges Cake! ^___^
I'm pretty sure that one cake was MAPPY birdoy, but that last letter could have been a g, BIRDOG.
Or was it MAFFY?
I guess the wreckerators are dysgraphic
"Birdholq" is the noise made by the cake decorator as I start choking her for spelling my cake wrong.
You know the one you think might be "Binday" could be "Birday", the "n" looks a lot like a British joined up handwriting r (it's a type of handwriting very similar to cursive, except the letters look a lot like printed letters joined up - main differences are the "r" - looking like the one you see here, and "s".
On second glance I think the Happy Boithday cake does actually say Happy Birthday, but the 'r' is a cursive r. Very funny though. I always tune in for my daily dose!
Vicky
Ok, my thoughts on the Edgar cake....
Think of Men In Black. Now think of when Edgar gets his body taken over by the alien. Now think of Edgar's wife...Imagine her saying "Happy Berday Edgar" And that cake makes total sense.
LOL, I'm reading "Happy Birdog Eigor". Love the commentary.
Ashley's cake - I was amazed at the three distinct shapes for the letter "Y". One was a Y, one was a V, and one was lost in between!
Happy Birsday... mebie zis iss dsherman
Can't wait for the afternoon, wreck-addict.
Best wishes from Berlin, Germany
Christina - the little plastic 'cup' on Logan's cake is actually a fish bowl with Elmo's pet fish.
Well, um, Happy 'irthday' would at least SOUND appropriate this week... Wasn't there one yesterday?
Waiting for a "Happy Barfday." Sure hope I didn't miss it.
Unbelievable! LOL
Laughed until I cried!
OMG, my dad, being from Yugoslavia, ALWAYS pronounced it "Birsday."
I'm now convinced that he had a secret life as a wreckorator...
In fact he's probably responsible for most of the cakes on this site.
it's really too bad that Ashley had a Bipthday. the cake wasn't too bad until that.
but happy Birt? THAT takes the cake. I wondered if Ernie enjoyed that cake. and if rubber ducky did too.
but happy Barthy is just rife with entendre.
What? No Beerdays? No Barfdays? Don't these people know how to party??!!
wv: fingsare
Fingsare becomink vedy clear now.
@Christina
I can't explain any of these misspellings, but I think the clear plastic cup is holding Elmo's goldfish - Dorothy.
These are so great! Such fun you have! :<)
Wishing you another happy day today!
Barbara Diane
Boithday should be the new, official name of the day celebrating a year of life - I mean, if there's anything the world can agree upon it's that.
Sad... (well maybe not) The one of the cheesecake, whipped cream and one candle looks to be from Cheesecake Factory!
I think the one that you said says "Happy Boithday" does actually say "Happy Birthday", but the "r" is too "scripty"...Thus resulting in what looks like "Happy Boithday". Just goes to show you can know how to spell and still screw it up!
Happy Birsday, runny nose, Happy Birsday !
WV : ledecent
As in "Le decent thing to do would be to guillotine those wreckators, n'est-ce pas ?"

OK, I'm going to totally be that person and say that I think the word is spelled correctly on "Cooper"'s cake. I think the "d" is a "t" where the person crossed it in a single stroke, like an upside-down "4." Then the "ol" is actually a "d," and the added "q" is "ay."
However, any cake that requires this amount of parsing is clearly not quite right. That is among the most unattractive decorative writing I have ever seen (and I normally wouldn't judge... my own writing, when I try every year to make my husband's birthday cake and end up doing a crappy job and throwing down the icing bag in frustration, is terrible).
On Logan's cake...I love how the expression on Mr. Noodle's face looks like he's even surprised with the misspelling on the cake. Too Funny!!!
Perhaps Edgar is going shopping at Bergdorfs.
wow, these are nuts, not only is the spelling awful, but the cakes are pretty disgusting as well...
on my birthday cake (which is today, ehem) I shall forget the words and have a cheesecake.
See, here's the thing. I don't think that all of those mistakes were the cake maker's fault. I think some of the people ordering them MUST have had terrible accents or something. There is no way you can get it THAT wrong on accident.
I am so glad I am not the only one seeing Hidden Mickey's everywhere...
Is Ashley's cake also covered in plastic wrap? If so, I bet a little misspelling was the least of her troubles when they pulled it off.
Ashley's cake is going to be a MESS when they take that plastic off. Or did they want to preserve this sucker?
and maybe it's Ashlev....*tilts head sideways* huh.
Looks like "Happy Birdas Edgar" to me!
Okay, I work in a LIBRARY, and it's almost finals week. Even though I'm in my office, the students totally get pissed at me when I'm rolling with laughter and disturbing their studying. So now I'm crying with giggles and I think I might be getting a headache from trying (unsuccessfully) to stifle the guffaws.
Some of your best work ever, Jen. I know it's been rough over in the Cake Wrecks corner lately, but I want you to know that this loyal wreckie LOVES what you do, and sings praises that you're actually getting paid to do it now. Yay you!
Happy Barthy. Priceless. Going for headache medicine now.
Oh, my sides hurt! Too funny! Great work, Jen!! LMAO!!!
OMG,I thought yesterdays was HILARIOUS, but then I saw this....!
Happy Barthy? Just try reading it out to yourself. It sounds like some kids cartoon character!
Thanx!!!!
1st Birt had me cracking up... mainly because there was Elmo... and some other guy who I don't recognize, but it probably the original design for Bert/Birt? or maybe Ernie?
Wonder if "boithday" was intentional, the way "ya'll" is on southern cakes.
But probably not.
Oh I laughed so hard at the "pine branch in your number 4 candle..." that I cried! Beautiful commentary! Thank you for that!
I see someone else commented on Paris Baguette. I didn't realize that was in the U.S. Because the French people I know, some of them, have been known to wish people a "eppee birsday".
ROFL We get wonky cake orders all the time, misspelling, weird inscriptions, you name it. Regardless of what is written on the cake it is ALWAYS spelled right. This has gotten us in trouble with customers in the past because they wanted it wrong. Go figure.
I LOVE this blog! It reminds me from time to time to tell the bakers who work for me what a great job they do on cakes :)
@aliciajoy:
"understandable"..maybe.
Inexcusable? Never!
Give ME the freakin'n job--at least I can SPELL!!!
I mean, WHAT--they only want to *pay* people with threats of deportation?
I'll work cheap~~~I've said it before:
I ain't easy but I CAN be had.
This is ridiculosity at its peak.
-
@K.P.:
"Still, a cake should not be illegible."
For some reason that sounds funny to me--but I AGREE.
Looks like we'll have to learn to settle for "edible."
Hey! That could be the name of a song dedicated to crappy cake decorators!
Settle for Edible!
I'll do the lyrics, if anyone wants to write the tune! There's SO much great material here!
=^~.~^=
Sooo. Is it just me or does that first cake with the yellow flowers look like a graduation cake. An why is poor Cooper getting a cake with yellow flowers on it anyway????
in my family we always wish each other both happy barfday, and happy durpbay (from my brother when he was two.) next year i am getting brave enough to order cakes with those on there. with my luck, the baker would probably ruin things by getting birthday right...
The one that you have 'borthday' for isn't a spelling mistake - it looks to me like 'birthday' but is written with an old fashioned scriped r, which has a loop in it and seems to be very close to the i :) :).

(singing) a mention..a mention..youve got a mention
Happy Boithday is my favourite.
Also - Happy Administrative Professionals Day to all of the other Receptionists, Secretaries, Personal Assistants, etc. I hope you got cake. I didn't. I did however get a gift card (activated at 10am and I was told it wouldn't be active for another 24 hours) even though I sent out a lovely reminder e-mail at the beginning of the week. I also had a few co-workers wish me a happy day, after I printed out signs for my desk that said, "Happy Administrative Professionals' Day to me!" Ah, good times. ;o) My mom did surprise me with flowers and a gift basket and lunch out, which is nice, even though she doesn't work with me. Anywho, Happy Administrative Professionals Day! And a very Happy Brihtady to anyone who is celebrating!
Pretty sure the first one in fact says "Hoppy Birdholq",as in jumping like a bunny. Nice.
Your commentary gets me every time. I thought I was going to die laughing today from lack of oxygen. Phew! Thanks!!
Hahaha! These last two birthday posts have made me laugh harder than any other CakeWrecks post. Ever.
The stupidity never ceases to amaze me!
I see that one as Happy Birdholy, as in "Holy Crap!", you actually CHARGED someone for this wreck?
wv: strolenm
Definition: I was strolen past the pastry aisle when I saw this disaster and thought "MMMMMMMM".
I don't know what you're talking about, that fourth cake clearly says 'birdes! :P
Hey, I knew Edgar. He didn't deserve a cake that bad. In fact, he deserved an awesome cake. Alas.
I don't think that says Boithday. It looks more like Bioethday.
I'm with Poohs Pics on the Edgar cake
"Marry Birdos (or Birdas? - good thing there weren't two s's!!) Edgar"
-Yiskah
Happy Barthy should be on a burger-shaped cake, made out of a health inspector. Or Alastair. I always thought he'd end up in the burgers.
Is the green & white cake for Ashley or "Ashlev"?
Thanks for the daily laugh!
So funny!!!! love it!
So, what does the Happy Bird thay? Doeth he thay thomething jolly?
BLESS YOU for being so ridiculously funny
period.
There's also a Paris Bagette in the San Francisco area. They make delicious cake, but I wouldn't be surprised by some Engrish.
See? That's just what I'm talking about...!!!
<< I'm guessing that's either "Binday" or "Benday." >>
It could have just as easily said Ben-Gay, yanno? Accidentally picking up the Ben-Gay instead of the CakeMate Ready-to-Wreck tube o' colored icing glop.
ridiculosity = a classic
Good times! :)
Just found you, and I'm so glad! I had no idea that cake could be so funny!
I cannot express enough how much I love this site. You have me laughing out loud every day. This is my favorite time of day.
Is cake #4 a cheesecake? I hope not
Awwww....
The happy sliver of cheesecake, to ME, looks not only kind of sad, but also...
also...
Oh, okay, here it goes... at the risk of having someone dispatch a team of professional *butterfly nets* to pay me a visit...
That thing looks like the head of a poodle. Long snout...puff on top of head...puff on nose...droopy ears...no eyes...Wait-cancel that last one.
But there it is. There you go.
Poodle.
I wonder if celebrant dared to LICK the gooey lettering off the edge of the plate..what with being in such a highbrow establishment and all...
=^-.-^=
Number four isn't a wish, it's a command: "Marry Birdsy, Edgar".
I love this site! It gives me a daily smile and hasn't failed me while I have been dealing with 2 deaths in the past month. Everyday I know that I can check in and have a chuckle. Besides the fact that I love cake, I love the commentary for each wreck. Thank you so much!
brahahahahahaha - you made my week!
I think that it says "Happy Burday Edgar" on that very lovely cheesecake. Poor guy. I cannot believe how many misspellings of Birthday there are. I mean what else could they misspell?? Happy? Oh yes, yes they could.. evil. Where are these wreckerators coming from??? Does one pick up a phone book and pick a name at random then hire them?
I don't know which one I like saying out loud more--"bipthday" or "boithday." Maybe if I sit here muttering both of them and giggling long enough, I'll figure it out before the men in white coats take me away.
Birdholay brings back memories of Falkersatherhood, in that I wonder what the heck happened between starting the word and finishing it. Most of the letters for birthday are in there, but it's like the d pushed out the t, and then the o and l just hopped in for fun. To be fair, the o and the l look like a failed "d," but "Birdhday" isn't much better.
Sheesh, my word verification is "shesloid." I'm going to muttering that in a gangster accent for most of the night, now, too...
The commentary on the last one made me cry. I had to get a tissue.
Thanks so much for the "Boithday" cakes today-so much more appropriate for me cuz it's my "Birfday"! Keep em' comming, Jen. Can't wait till tommorow's post!
wv: caveacke-could we be looking at the wrong way to spell cupcake next?
Birsday! Oh Korea...bless. Just...bless.
A lot of young people I know say "birsday" on purpose, my friends even sing the song that way. It has to do with our European parents pronouncing "birthday" incorrectly. I wouldn't be surprised if someone were to order a cake like that for the novelty value.
I believe that it is always the thought that counts!
The first one made me laugh so I actually snorted. HAPPY BIRDHOLE! bahahaha!
That last one made me think of that episode of the office in which Dwight hangs a sign that says "It is your birthday."
Edgar's looks like "Happy Burday" to me.
So... Any misspellings of "Happy" yet?
For the "Birsday" cake, I heard it in my grandmother's voice. She still has a thick Hungarian accent even after ~60 years in America.
the picture of the one slice of cheesecake on the plate....thats from The Cheesecake Factory, I used to work there. YOU try making 100 plates a night all with "personal" messages...it isn't easy hahah! Although I don't believe I ever wished someone a Happy Birdthay.
My dad has an old friend who's a cartoonist. I now seriously want to make him a cake with "Happy Benday!" on it, and cover it with Ben-Day dots.
ROFL. So epic! I love the "happy birsday" cake, because it's so fancy looking. Someone obviously took the time to make it gorgeous and just right, with fancy olive branches on the label part and cherries on top. Then either they had some sort of horrible head trauma or they let their five year-old scribble the "happy birthday" on it. Brilliant!
Happy Barthy.
See, that's really a theology-geek cake celebrating someones conversion to the theological school of Karl Barth.
Obviously, I am such a geek, since Barth (pronounced "bart") was the first thing I thought of when I saw the cake.
And a "Happy Barthy" message is somehow appropriately closed with a period. Not sure why, but it works.
My mother pronounces it "birsday" because she's Austrian and can't pronounce "th."
Any "bitrdays" out there?
'Cause that's what it is, really...
I loved Boithday. My 5 year old like the Elmo cake (big shocker) It's a Rocketing Elmo Cake! Cool!
John S.
Heeeeeere's Barthy.
He was the owner of a fictitious greasy-spoon diner on the Canadian born live action variety show on Nickelodian from the mid eighties to the early nineties.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F44bLc6t7-I
I think you spell unadulterated happiness B-I-R-D-H-O-L-Q
...Or the Paris Baguette cake, rather than coming from Koreatown, might possibly have come from Korea. (I've submitted a couple of local wrecks, but none have made the cut so far.) There's another PB every other block. I felt slightly cheated that my own birthday cake had no wrecked writing.
Two further points about Paris Baguette and the nation which birthed it:
1) Korean-infused English is called Konglish. Engrish is Japanese. (Do not EVER make that mistake when talking to a Korean. Also avoid mentioning Dokdo. Can. Of. Worms.)
2) Korean has no "th" sound, so "birsday" is a pretty decent guess. Wrong, and easily correctable if the Wreckerator had looked at any of their party supplies, but hey... they tried.
Korea paiting!
When I pronounce the first one, it sounds like I was wishing someone a happy birthday when I was suddenly given an unnecessary Heimlich maneuver. Am I right? Anyone? (crickets chirping)
Eliza
If this is how they decorate them, how must they taste?? Just saying!
To be fair, the Happy Birsday cake came from Paris Baguette, which is a Korean bakery chain. I'm not even sure if there are any in the US, so this could be less of a wreck and more lost in translation.
While the spelling may not be so great on the third one, the treble clef looks beautiful.
My dad's side of the family is Polish and "Birsday" is exactly how they all say it! All the cousins joke about how when we were kids and all the great aunts and uncles would sing the Birthday Song, it would come out as "Happy birsday to you, Happy birsday to you..." So great seeing it on a cake! I think we'll have to custom-order that kind of spelling for my Babcia's next birsday.
When I saw Barthy, I immediately thought of Barth from You Can't Do That on Television, one of the best shows of all time. He'd probably put that wreckerator in the burgers!
If "Happy Birsday" is from Korea, it would be very un-Korean-chain-bakery to have any writing that messy on one of their cakes. Those things are all usually so perfect they look like plastic. It looks like they sold the chocolate card and some ooze to write with so the buyer could write their own message, so I have a suspicion a non-professional might have been responsible for this wreck.
The "Birsday" cake is from Korea. Paris Baguette is a popular (and delicious) bakery, but they're usually REALLY good about spelling stuff in English.
Cake Wrecks needs to have a post dedicated to the crazy stuff Koreans put on their cakes. Tomatoes, anyone?
In "Birdholq", it looks like the "ol" is meant to be a "d" and the "q" is meant to be "ey" squeezed in. Not that "Birdhdey" is much of an improvement. ;)
Happy Barthy made me laugh so hard I almost peed myself (easy to do anyway, cuz I'm preggo)...however when you pointed out the period, I had ppl stopping by my office wondering what was so funny. (couldn't speak through the laughter and tears!!)
Forgive if someone has already deciphered #1, but I think I've figured it out:
It does say "Birthday", albeit in a very badly written method.
The "t" was started from the top, comes down, comes back up and was going to cross itself, but never made it. So, it ends up looking like a "d".
What we see as "o" & "l" is actually the "d" in "day". The two parts just didn't make it together.
And the "y" just ended up a big mess, because frankly it looks like the decorator just gave up at this point and tried to cram it on the end. (i.e. A "y" with a closed top looks similar to a "q").
As for the others, there's no excuse...
I LOVE "Barthy"!!!
The "boithday" one makes me think of the Three Stooges -- how Moe or Curly might pronounce it. (Actually, that might not be a bad cake idea, given the right (non-wrecky) decorator.)
I have seen the Happy Birsday cake! I 'm an American teaching English in Korea, and that is exactly how my students pronounce "birthday!" Paris Baguette stores are all over the place here, and so are horrendous misspellings. :)
OMG dis swite iz soo funneh dat i P'd mehsef! lol at weesth i cn spell......
~Shawnasea
Poor Edgar. What a gift that is xx
The Happy Birt makes me wonder if they put the Elmo on the cake to try to cover it up...I can see it now "Happy 1st Birt? what's that supposed to mean? Hey, I know, this cake is for a kid, if you pretend Bert is spelled with an 'i' and then stick an elmo on top....there! it's a Sesame Street cake!....now, it looks a little lopsided at the top, let's just add a few more toys up there aaaand perfect, no-one will know it wasn't intentional!
