Growing Geek Girls

Thursday, September 24, 2009

It's time to ramp up the geekage on our Cake Wrecks "Virtual" Tour by paying a little visit to GeekDad.

GeekDad ("Raising Geek Generation 2.0") is the parenting blog over on Wired, although they feature plenty of clever tutorials, reviews, articles, and interviews to interest even the non-parent geeks like myself.

If you are a parent, though, and are looking to instill the proper geeky vices in your offspring, cakes are a great way to do it. (Right now you're wondering: Just how many times CAN she fit the word "geek" into this post? Ahh, read on and learn, gwasshoppa.) For example, say your little girl is really into Princesses. How can you add a dash of the geek while still giving her the cake she wants?

Like so.

Or maybe she gave you a lot of leeway, and just asked for something in her favorite colors, pink and yellow. Well, who's to say Wolverine doesn't go great with that color scheme?

That's right: NOBODY.

Of course, if you're really lucky, your little girl will let you order just about anything, so long as it's on a lace doily and comes in a pink box:

Subtlety is the key, of course. There's no need for overkill.

That's right, geek parents: raise your girl right, and someday she just might be requesting this on her birthday:

Er, hopefully because she likes Catwoman, I mean. Not so much because of the black-leather-and-whips thing. Heh. Um...yeeeah.

Well, on that awkward note...be sure to check out my virtual chat with GeekDad Doug here!

Thanks to Jessica H., Erin F., Sarah R., Christine M.!

I want that little girl with the catwoman cake to be MY daughter! ;) Very hip. Raaawr!

Darth has a titanium alloy shin on his left leg, like Lt. Dan on Forrest Gump! I had no idea.

The hulk cake is amazing. It looks like the product of some radioactive accident that spawned little angrier hulks. You don't eat this cake.. it eats YOU.

Geek Cakes!

My H2B and I toyed briefly with the idea of putting "WE DID IT!" on our cake as a little shout-out to the Watchmen graphic novel. Then we realized that only four people besides us would get it.

Am keeping my eyes peeled for Watchmen wrecks.

WV: hytemi--That Catwoman cake looks like it's saying hytemi.

I love the Disney princesses dancing around the giant Vader lying on the floor. It's like they just defeated him and are celebrating.

Katie said...

Hahaha, that's hilarious. I bought those SAME princess toys for my daughter's cake a few years ago. I left off Darth Vader though. :D

My 6 year old daughter would go for ANY of those cakes..especially the princess/Darth Vader combo. She's a very girly girl...but LOVES the boys' stuff too. I suspect it wasn't Dad's geekiness that inspired that cake..rather the dual interests of a very eclectic little girl! :) (or boy!)

Me-OW! That cat woman is scary!

On my 25th birthday my In Laws got me a DQ ice cream cake with The Hulk on it. They got it because it was the only one left but I thought it was awesome!

Galadriel said...

Nooo, *Spiderman* would work so much better with pink and yellow. Especially if you took the opportunity to make it a very red pink.

Unknown said...

Is the Hulk cake a CCC? The swirls in the icing make it looks like it would separate into cupcakes.

KPP said...

I love the Disney Princess/Darth Vador cake. I also think it looks like they have vanquished him. Ha! Belle's going to kick him in the frosted...head any minute now.

The Honorable Mayor of Bethville said...

Someone please please please make that first cake with the three princesses actually fighting Darth Vader with tiny light sabers. I would donate $10 to the cake-making cause, just for the hilarity it would bring to my life.

Jody W. and Meankitty said...

Thanks for posting the Star Wars / Princess cake combo. Now I know what to do for my daughter's birthday. If I added Scooby Doo it would be the Holy Triumverate.

Goodbread said...

Ah hahaha!! Yesss cake 1 is pretty amazing! Belle looks like she has her arms crossed, head titled, about to sass Darth for interrupting their ball. Meanwhile Cinderella looks like she is trying to grab her dress so it wont get hit by the light saber. And Aurora.... is just clueless to the whole act. Or maybe she is yelling at Belle to "not screw this one up for her!" I mean it IS a man technically.

Lizzy Leigh said...

What's wrong with wanting a CatWoman cake with a whip on it when you're 8? lol.

That girl's going to either turn out to be a dominatrix or need therapy.

Unknown said...

Wait . . . is the first one supposed to be a wreck? It's awesome, I absolutely LOVE it!

Terry Lee said...

team disney princesses!!

maneaters. love it.

Chrystalline said...

The angle of the photo makes it look like Cinderella is wielding a lightsaber. That would make an awesome movie - move over Mulan, Cinderella's coming!

MPdaCNA said...

Cat woman with a whip ... is this a family friendly site? Don't think I can put what I'm thinking roflmao!

Jen said...

My oldest daughter actually requested a cake with all of the Disney Princesses along with Padme & Princess Leia for her 5th birthday cake. I couldn't find the last two in time for her party, maybe next year!

Gustopher said...

I love the first cake.

It could use some minor improvement: Get rid of Darth Vader's lightsaber, add a little plastic one to the princess on the left, and voila -- The princesses have slain Darth Vader.

But even as it is, it is excellent. I thought this was supposed to be all about bad cakes?

Cat said...

Pink, yellow, and Wolverine? Yeah, I TOTALLY would've asked for that one when I was a kid. I was always so sad when we played X-men that I had to play as a girl one, because the guys had so much cooler powers.

Cookie said...

I love the Disney Princess/Darth Vader Cake. Definitely a little girl after my own heart.

I love Adnoxious's comment about the Hulk cake.

You Don't Know Me said...

The Hulk cake is scary. Not just because it's covered with gross amounts of frosting to hide the cupcakes, or because the frosting is painted green, but because there are so many disembodied Hulk heads around it.

Anonymous said...

My 2yo daughter would love the first cake. Her 2 favorite things are princesses & Darth Vader.

I blame her brothers for ruining her...

kerry said...

I love the Darth Vader cake! I agree it would be even more awesome of the princesses were holding light-sabers, too.

I like the Catwoman one, too.

Ok so I think I have geeked my daughter enough. I am soo proud of her. As I was looking through the cake pics she was looking over my shoulder and goes, is that Catwoman? YES, she is a geekazoid lol well I kind of knew that already as she loves watching all the geek shows out there. I mean what kid doesn't love How it's Made? Right? lol or how about Batman? She is my mini geek, but she really didn't have a choice as she has parents who are both geeks. yeah no chance of her NOT being one with those odds lol

dastme- Who here's a geek? Dastme of course

My daughter wants that first cake for her upcoming b-day. Except no pink icing.

(WV = Flingeo - i want to flingeo these cakes out the window)

Melissa (& Billy) said...

Darth Vader looks like he's about to put the light saber to those Disney princesses. D= *vwooom* "Aaaaa, you killed Cinderella!!"

Either that, or Cinderella is saying, "You can't win, Darth. If you strike us down, we will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." XD (if that's the case then he already got Hannah Montana, that girl is everywhere!)

If Simone has a whip-wielding Catwoman on her cake at 8 years old, look out! She's going to be a handful in 8 more years.

Suzie Q said...

My daughter wants a hamburger cake with Mario and Luigi for her birthday this year--that would be a total win.

Lucille Ball Jr. said...

wow! my sister and i always wanted the same old ballerina cake, princesses, castles. ;) we were girly girls! we still are! ;)

Little Lovables said...

wow, these are incredible! though, I actually really like the first one in a kitchy way.

these could also be used for boys who like boy stuff, and princess too (like my 3 year old!)

utaduta said...

my kids would ask for such cakes! yesterday in the car my son told his siter he was choking her with the force. she then said " you can't choke me, i'm a robot!" haha!

Cyndi said...

Maybe the princess/Darth Vader cake is a much better dual birthday cake than my brother and I got as kids. My mom just drew a line down the middle and wrote one of our names on each side.

The Kinker Family said...

My soon to be 6 yr old daughter would love the first cake. This year however she asked for a Halloween themed party since we're doing it in Oct. She wants a cake that has body parts on it. She even found a severed foot to put on it. Weird girl. She thinks anatomy is cool.

kat79 said...

What exactly is Darth trying to do to Cinderella with his pink lightsaber?

Anonymous said...

I just want to say that you can be a Girl Geek and have favorite characters that are not men. Come on now Jen, the only female geek icon you have posted is Catwoman.

@ GeekDad-in-training

You just made my day!

Layla said...

First off, Love the princess/Darth Vader cake. I think I want one for my next birthday.

I would like to point out that not only do you get Wolverine on that pink and yellow cake, but it appears to be Magneto in the other cornor. Maybe it is not really a pink and yellow cake, but rather a pink and yellow boxing ring.

Also, I think the Hulk is a dreaded CCC. How could one possibly get those angles of swirls without cupcakes?

hollyml said...

I just wanted to confirm that the "Darth Vader Princess" cake was the birthday girl's request. :) (I know the mom.) She was turning 4. Spiderman was also involved in the party decor.

I agree that it would have been even better if the princess figures had their own light sabers. ;)

Beach Mama said...

I like the Princess cake! It reminds me of Shrek 3 when the Princesses fight back...

Stephanie-Marie said...

The Disney Vader cake... is amazing and I must have one someday! There is nothing wrong with that at all for me haha ( ^o^)/

frigglesnitz said...

You wouldn't like the Hulk CCC (ptooui) when it's angry...not that you really like it now.

WV snemes- Snarky friends. Not really friends or enemies, they're snemes.

Bree said...

I don't care if the Hulk one is a CCC, it's awesome. He's my favorite superhero. I never cared for the comics, but I loved (and still do) the TV show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, and the NBC cartoon from the 80s'.

Jen said...

I love how on the first cake, Belle's got her arms folded and seems to be going, "Yeah right, buster...I took down the Beast, I'll take you too." lol...

Wolverine Girl said...

Yay! A Wolverine cake! Happy dance time.

My youngest boy had me make daleks cup cakes for his last bday. (pics in my link) :) some times the geek wears off!

Bailey's Leaf said...

Should I be embarrassed to say that my kid would love both the princess/Darth Vader cake and the Hulk-ish nightmare?

Marcy said...

I just realized what to get my four year old next week.

Sheet cake with Dr. Horrible photo image. Princesses standing over him, like the Vader cake.

She'll be delighted to the nth degree.

Jen, I'll bring pics of her delight to the Bethesda signing. It won't be a pretty cake, but the girl will be so happy.

I've seen many bad cakes here, but that Hulk cake was the most disgustingly unappealing one I've seen. Isn't it odd to know that some humans consider that food? I'm gonna post it on my fridge to motivate me to diet and eat healthier. Barf!

Sarah said...

That first cake is calling me. "Sarah... Sarah... two of your favourite fandoms... you know you want me, Sarah...."

Maybe with a green or blue border, though. Aurora's dress is plenty of pink for me.

I love the Darth Vader princess cake. Me want!

Nancy the Romancechick said...

I love the princess/Vader one. I thought Cinderella had the lightsaber which would have been even cooler. I know a Disney Princess/Star Wars girl (now 20) who would LOVE that cake.

My six year old now wants the Darth Vader vs Disney Princesses cake for her next birthday!

I love that first cake <3

LunamothMama said...

Yep, my 4 year old daughter wanted a Princess Darth Vader Spiderman birthday. Unfortunately, Spiderman couldn't fit on the cake and there were no lightsabers for the princesses. But... we laughed for an hour about this cake - the icing lady told us it took her alm0st an hour!! imagine that... lol

My niece had a Barbie and Star Wars birthday party for her 7th birthday. The cake had Darth Vader and Barbie figurines. It is nice to know she is not alone.

My little cousin (turning 5, I think) asked for a Star Trek cake of the episode "where Spock and Kirk fight over the mean lady who doesn't even want him". It was a pretty ugly cake - we didn't have much to work with - but he LOVED it.

It looks like Darth Vader is going to cut Cinderella in half. OH NO!

I am 18 years old, and I'm the girliest geek I know. My entire dorm room is decorated in pink. If you look closely, however, you will see that my pink bulletin board is actually a nerd board, complete with "Spock is Hot" bumper sticker, Monty Python buttons, a Disney pin of Yoda and a you-must-be-this-tall-to-ride sign (Judge me by my size, do you?), and my lanyard from GenCon.

That being said, I took one look at that first cake and nearly died from joy. Disney princesses and Star Wars are two of my favorite things. I thought, "Surely this cake was meant for me."

Then I looked at the inscription. "Happy Birthday Sarah."

My name is Sarah.

Is my life complete? Why, yes, I believe it is. Or will be as soon as someone gets me that cake. ;)
