"Oooooohh pretty!"
Last week, however, sparked a debate rarely seen in these parts, and instead of comments we got seven page dissertations on popular 20th century children's literature and its effect on modern culture and resulting religious, racial and socioeconomic implications. And guess who had to moderate all those comments? That's right: me.
Every.
Last.
Word.
So this week, we're going to look at some more Potter sweets, but we're gonna do it a bit differently. This week we're gonna look at the pretty pictures, and when we're done, we're gonna do our comments Twitter style, meaning 140 letters or less. Capisce? Everybody with me? Okay then. Here goes.
As always, if you'd like to nominate a Sweet you can send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 227 Newer› Newest»Those are nicely done cakes. I like the Monster Book Best. Does anyone do Disc World Cakes? Terry Pratchett is "Da Bomb".
"oooooooooh pretty!" :D
I love the Potter Cakes...Too bad nobody made a Professor Snape cake *g*
*counting letters..1..2..3* :)
These are so awesome... the one with the glasses on it is so beautiful. I love the scarf knit pattern detail!
Ooooo Pretty! Seriously, these are awesome. I wish I had that type of talent!
Ooooh, Pretty. :)
Nicely done all the way around!
WV - urocke. And yes, you do.
Some people ruin it for all of us!! You should just delete the ones who make such comments and save yourself some time!
The cake with the pot is just amazing, well, all of them are, but that one struck me the most. Love'em, keep'em coming!!
These cakes are beautiful!!! You're giving me ideas for a future birthday cake... :)
Love the snitch in the second cake, so tiny and perfect!
despite the penguin proportions, Hedwig is lovely. brillo cakemaking
Those are gorgeous! Far better than any HP cake I've made.
I have been looking forward to this post all week! How about you just keep doing a Harry Potter theme (good and bad cakes) for another... I don't know... month or so? Please!!!
I agree! Where's the Snape Cake? I'd like to take a bite out of him- rawr!
These are fantastic!
The Mandrake and the Monster Book of Monsters made me squee, and the Hogwarts cake is wonderful. Simple, yet breathtaking.
WV: ordbas - I worked for my bruvva, and 'e was a really 'ordbas to work for.
Is the monster book of monsters a cake for Tom Riddle?
oooh, "bloody brillant!" What talent. One day I hope to exhibit even a miniscule amount of their ability! {bows in awe the cakey greatness}
OOp, I found some- here are links to Discworld cakes. Now THOSE are fun books to read!

Hahhahaha, "Ooooooh Pretty" XD. I'm not a potter fan but those cakes are pretty damn amazing.
These are all awesome! What I want to know is how do these little (under 10 yrs old) kids keep getting such amazing birthday cakes?? Can they even appreciate it?
I am always open-mouthed at the cakes on your site; at least on Sunday it's for beauty's sake! ^_^ Love the feathers on that snitch. Exquisite.
Bernard's cake is my fave.
-Julie
I WANT the mandrake cake! Please? (@Anonymous RE Pratchett: I just discovered him, and I so agree.)
oh, i want them all. does it get any better than two of the best things ever, combined into one? I mean really, cake and potter!
Amazing! Love the Mandrake!!
I love the mandrake cake! Very cool.
The snitch one looks amazing - I wonder how they did the wings?
And my word verification is "monsti"
Teehee!
Wow! These were all "sweet" - especially Bernard's cake. It was very Potter-sophisticated.
The problem with these cakes is they are so gorgeous I wouldn't want to eat them. The mandrake cake is so clever!
I wish they were all mine! They're all so beautiful! The mandrake one is especially creative. And the Monster Book...
the Mandrake is amazing! if the pot is a cake, it looks like real terra cotta!
Ha ha ha. I almost never read the comments here but your post made me go back to read the last HP comments. H-I-Larious! Lets just say that I will never again take such a serious stance on HP as I have in the past. Who wants to act like that?
LOVE the mandrake cake!
Oh Pretty! Sorry for your poor eyes last time.
Ohhhh!
Pretty!!!!!!!!!!!
Yummy, and pretty. Especially like the Snitch cake.
wv: losaa: I still have losaa words left.
Mandrake=genius! I never would have thought to even do one!
Oooohhh Pretty!!
The Mandrake root is simply perfect and adorable...and the crystals pouring!! Stunning!
Cakeous Nonwreckia!
Wow. Can't believe all the ruckus after last week's post. Hello? This blog is about great cakes. And these are spectacular. Thanks for the daily posts of humor and the beautiful Sunday Sweets. Love your blog! (Hoping you overlook my extra characters since I've been so flattering. ;) )
Cakeous Nonwreckia!
Wow. Those are just incredible. The Hogwarts cake that lights up is fantastic!
~Amy B.
Wow, I have some of those in dollhouse miniature on my blog! But made out of fimo rather than cake. And tiny rather than large and awesome like these.
I'm seriously considering getting into cake decorating at some point - seems similar to fimo sometimes.
That little owl on the first book reminded me of "School House Rocks" and I felt a little bad that I *kinda* would have loved to see that little owl lecturing in Hogwarts...
They are all awesome, though the mandrake cake is my fav.
wv: murdnest - where murds call home.
Oooh pretty! haha Seriously though, these are absolutely brilliant! I definitely want a Harry Potter related cake for my next Birthday! =)
I second what Jennifer said - can we keep the Potter theme going for awhile? ;)
I think the mandrake cake is amazing. And proves that some people do have a little Neville in them, it's not just me!
Ooooohh, pretty! :-)
Loved them! (and the movies and the books!) Thanks for the Discworld links, Anon! I heart Pratchett!
I heart you.
I agree that the mandrake cake is super-creative!!
I'm not a huge fan of the Hedwigs on either cake... I think penguin-y proportions are right!
Awesome!
Opinions are like peoples' rears, and I am sorry you had to view so many last week!
Cheers!
Awesome! Yummy! Ooooh Pretty! (61 characters including this.)
Love the cakes, especially the snitch. Oooo Shiny! Is that edible gold? Love HP and Cakewrecks rocks. Mary C.
All are fab. I threw a Harry Potter themed party for my nephew and we had a golden snitch cake. Which we couldn't eat because he wanted to keep it ;)
I love the stack of books cake! It's so elegant and pretty. I want it!!
Megan

"...literature and it's effect.."
As long as we're talking about literature: It should be 'its effect'...
I have to disagree about the pot, too. Just feeling argumentative today I guess. :)
Some people ruin it for all of us!! You should just delete the ones who make such comments and save yourself some time!
~~~~~~
I agree w/ the other Robyn (cool name, btw). Over a certain length, delete it. This is why I rarely read comments--don't have time.
Oooh, Pretty!
I love, Love, LOVE the mandrake cake! Brilliant!
Beautiful! Love the mandrake cake! And re: anti-HP folks...haters to the left!
Ooooh pretty!
Ok, now that the mandatory phrase has been written, I do have to add that although the Monster Book is well executed, the idea of eating something that seems to have tarentula genes is very gross to me.
Very very cool. Going to re-read the first one now.
As many others have said, I LOVE the mandrake cake!
The rest are okay, but not as cool as the mandrake.
Of all the HP things you can chose from and someone thought a Mandrake cake would reflect it more? weird! It is awesome though, kudos to the cake maker.
What fabulously magical cakes. Love them all. My favorite would have to be the mandrake cake though. :D
I think Hedwig looks a little more wreckish here than you give her credit for. She just looks worried. Maybe it's because she knows she won't make it through the next movie?
Linz
That's awesome!
They're beautiful! I ADORE the Mandrake one.
Very cool! I love them all!
they're all great.. but i dont like the last one, Hedwig looks like someones smacked her in the face with a baseball bat!
Thanks for sharing the pretties. I would have just deleted the anti-Potter posts-whose blog is this anyway-yours or theirs?
sue
If you go to the flickr link for the mandrake cake, it says the pot is terracotta, so sadly, not cake.
Love them all though. ooohhh, prettyyy!
I love the snitch cake. It's so simpe and elegant but at the same time impressive.
These are so awesome! I just can't pick a favorite this week.
They are pretty cakes, I'll give you that. A lot of craftsmanship involved, etc.
But enough with the Harry Potter cakes already. I actually didn't comment on the last batch, hoping they'd go away. I think HP is just meh... devoting two precious Sunday Sweets editions to him is really, really overdoing it.
The Mandrake is my very favorite.
I love the cakes, and I love that you spelled "capisce" correctly.
Not a Potter fan, never read, seen, etc. but the cakes are pretty darn cool.
Anonymous - Have to say that the Discworld cakes are AMAZING, that first in particular. Big TP fan here :)
The cakes are brilliant! Love the mandrake cake, I've never seen one before. :)
John started it by talking about kids and reading, rather than cakes!! Is the light up cake really really cake? Or just the base?
To quote Ron Weasley: "Whoa!" But in total nerd/fangirlish-ness the Mandrake cake takes it (even if they are creepy little offspring of banshees).
Does Bernard's cake say "He whose name no-one can remember"? I wonder what it says around the rest of the cake. Very sweet cakes.
Last week's HP cakes were good but these are AMAZING! The mandrake cake is...amazing. (Haha, amazing just fits this post!)
Ooooooooooooh! Pretty! Pretty!
Love the cakes as always. Went to last week's post to see the big ado. WOW! Lots there. I LOVED the Sound-of-Music/1812/chocolate/rose post! Rather than ban books, let's read them TOGETHER and then DISCUSS them. This helps teach your children to think for themselves. Remember, Thomas Jefferson pointed out that a democracy will survive only with a well-educated populace. -WM
"Aaaaaahh pretty!"
See, I'm original.
oooooooh pretty!
Those cakes are amazing!! I love them all!
They are all lovely - hard to pick a favorite. The lighted cake is simply awesome, but I think my favorite is the Monster Book. Or maybe the Sorting Hat. Or, maybe...No, I know! It's...hmm.
ooooh, pretty!
Offended.
HP = Witchcraft.
Mandrake = spells = witchcraft = antireligion.
Cakes = sugar = slavery = black people = racist.
JKR = non-US person = probably Muslim/terrorist.
Deeply offended
The mandrake pot is very realistic terra cotta looking. Bravo if it's actually cake as well!
Oooooooh Pretty. :o)
Oh PS can we talk about how cool the name Bernard is (with the UK pronunciation)? I wish it was my name...
Cute! Love all the chubby owls
No one else is counting their letters :(
VERY pretty! (Also, at least one looked like it was made at home. Good job, home baker!!)
Wow, a Hogwarts cake even better than last week's -- didn't think it was possible!
To all those who disagreed with posting the HP comments last week: I think the fun of a good blog is that sometimes the topics spark debate. I do feel sorry for Jen and John because they must moderate them all, but that's the price of a really cool blog. The cakes ARE awesome (or horrible) but when you post your opinion, it just follows that some will disagree. And most of the comments were respectfully worded, and led to an interesting debate. JMHO.
Those cakes are unbelievably beautiful. Like, museum-quality pieces. Much better than my own attempt at a MBOM cake: http://tinyurl.com/n2wngp
WOW, those cakes were amazing! I could never choose a favorite, because I love everyone of them! Now I need to go finish book 6 before I go to the movie!
http://joshandsavannahadopt.blogspot.com
Ah Sunday Sweets indeed! These are fantastic in the true sense of the word.
P.S. John - as an ex-children's bookseller, I feel your pain.
thanks for sharing! My daughters and I loved seeing them. We're huge hp fans
Thank you for posting these. They are AWESOME!
I can't believe you opened up another can of worms! Isn't Twitter satanic or something? Consider your souls, folks.
Just kidding. These cakes make me want to use my coack of invisibility to sneak in and steal one.
I always wonder if cakes that are that awesome looking taste good too- I don't know if I could cut into it to find out!
I thought it said "Harry Potter's Snatch". That would have made it double impressive.
I got tired just scrolling through the first hundred or so comments on last Sunday's post, but did enjoy seeing the cakes from last week and this week. I'm with the anonymous first post -- I would love to see some Disc World Cakes. Are you up for putting the world on the back of a giant turtle?
I wonder how they did the pouring crystal bottle next to the 2nd cake. Great work all around!
Thank for the Potter post
"ooooooooooooh pretty..."
Love the Mandrake cake. The details in the face are amazing!
mysleepinghusband.blogspot.com
Love the Sorting Hat cake--can't wait 'till we're settled in the new place and I can go see the new movie!
That mandrake cake is awesome! The detail in the face is amazing! I hope the pot was cake too....mmmmm yummy!
I love the snich!!! The mandrake is so adorablely ugly, I just love it!
Very cool! Harry Potter rocks!
Limiting comments ala “twitter” works…but I think you should make comments limited to “Haiku”. Here would be mine for this post: Good versus evil/Does not matter what you read/These cakes are awesome.
I once saw a harry potter cake on the foodnetwork (frickin love that channel) that was a perfect model of Diagon Alley, with everything from Eyelops Owl Emporium to Gringots bank. :D good stuff.
Art cakes here in the Philippines are very expensive and I understand that. However, most of them don't taste good. I hope that owl cake tastes good as it looks.
Gorgeous cakes! The snitch cake is absolutely adorable and I WANT ONE! :O
these are all wonderful! I want a Harry Potter cake...but my birthday isn't for another 6 months. pout!
The spilling potion bottle was fascinating. Such creativity!
Mmmmm... cake!
Love these cakes, but a Disc World cake for my b-day would make me as happy as a Trekker surrounded by Tribbles!
-- Pam
Okay, I am not a member of the Harry Potter fan club. I've never read the books and only managed about 20 minutes of the 1st movie. I'm just not that into him.
HOWEVER - these cakes are cool. Even I can admit that.
Weird cakes.
Fat bird was, okay.
I am not a fan of hp, at all.
I love any book by C.S. Lewis.
When are you guys going to do a post Narnia cakes?
~Lucia
Oh man, that mandrake cake is irresistible!
How does the cake light up!? How is it even possible? I want it. I want a light up cake. Though I could never eat Hogwarts, or Hedwig... but the monster book I could. I heart HP.
All are wonderful. The little owl on the first cake/Hogwarts journal is just so sweet!
WV: Flaysa
I'm gonna flaysa the schmucks who came to a fun site like cakewrecks and felt the need to go all serious nutso with their comments last week, lol
The cakes are all beautiful. The snitch is my fave. Not a HP fan, but I can still admire the creativity used for these cakes.
These are cool! We just saw the new movie today. Hope the comments are more manageable this time. ;)
I love terry Pratchett!!! Good suggestion! and yes they do- check it out: http://otter.covblogs.com/archives/014624.html
Who wouldn't love to cut up a Rita Skeeter cake and serve it up?
Come on you wreckers, oblige us?
Love love love the mandrake--it's inspired.
YAAAAY for beautiful HP cakes! And any beautiful cakes!
Why not delete any post that is not about cakes or the wreckage displayed here? Ya don't have to tolerate diatribes just to have an open dialog. Let's keep it cakey!
I love reading comments (cake related) but all the moralizing is a drain.
And yes, Scott, Twitter IS indeed Satanic. :-) I am intrigued that you have a "coake of invisibility". LOL LOL I guess the invisibility keeps it suitable for the Legion of Decency. Lily
Ooooh pretty!!
and then some :)
look at it this way John now you know what intelligent well read people read your wifes blog!
@Capability Bowes:
Sorry, but sometimes, you *can* come across as a pompous a**....but THIS was hilarious and brilliant!
It's a win-win, because on the flip side, The Righteous Ones may actually believe the stuff you wrote and be verily proud!
=^~~^=
Nice, except the mandrake has fake silk ivy stuck in it and the flower pot is real !
I'm the Britta who made the Hogwarts castle in this post. The cliffs are all chocolate cake (10 cakes 9"x13" each!), but the castle itself is made of decorated gingerbread buildings with hard candy windows, which is how I could get the lights inside the buildings, since they were hollow. I wasn't sure if that was enough "cake" content to qualify, but I guess Jen liked it!
Ms Avery, you liked my Hogwarts better than Charm City Cakes last week? Wow! :D All the HP cakes this week & last are fabulous! Nice to be in such good company!
http://www.britta.com
http://www.EerieElegance.com
These are absolutely stunning. I don't think I could bring myself to cut into one!
just can't believe how amazing the monster book of monsters is...that is some serious talent.
Amazing cakes!!! Thank you for posting them!! HP and cake- two of my favorite things. :)
I went back and read *most* of the comments from last week and it caused me to literally pick up the phone and call my parents; thanking them for letting me choose to read whatever I wanted as a kid. I was/am an avid reader.
Awesome cakes! The one with the books & scarf is my favorite - though the Cake Nouveau one rocks too. Cake Nouveau's brilliant at design!
I wasn't aware we could demand you stop showcasing cakes we don't like. :p I like these though, so carry on!
@Anna: perhaps you should get your own blog and then you can post about what you enjoy.
This here is Jen's blog. :)
Rock on Jen and John!!
Lovely cakes. I drool.
Alex
Thanks for finding these cakes! I can't imagine how much creativity it must take to make something that awesome. :)
The second best thing about HP cakes?
How they get peeps all worked up and paranoid about imaginary things!
Hoooray! :D
That's sad people couldn't just admire the cakes. I haven't read the books and never will but I love the movies =) The cakes are beautiful! I love the castle one.
GREAT CAKES! Still, my favorite Harry Potter cake on this blog to date was the Wizard's Chess cake. Wish there was a Tonks and Lupin cake...
Oooooh... pretty! I like the Mandrake and the light up castle the bestest. =) Very pretty. I, too, had to go back and read some of last week's comments. Priceless!
I think I went over my limit... you need a handy counter doo-hicky. =)
These are REALLY nice HP cakes! Thanks, Jen!
#CakeWrecksRulesAndSoDoesHarryPotter
Love this blog - all awesome cakes! I'm an HP fan, though. Even if I weren't I'm going to give a high five to Britta, an extremely talented friend and fellow HP aficionado, for making Cake Wrecks Sunday Sweets. Go girl!
Wow, awesome cakes! I love the mandrake!!!
I'm curious about something...
Since the concept and execution of theme cakes is so widespread and popular, why aren't people/ businesses/whatever using the ideas in other food venues?
The possibilities could be mind-boggling!
Imagine:
Theme salads, or individual vegetables or fruits--genetically engineered to look like a popular cult figures...
Theme cuts of meat...
Theme cheeses...
The medium is the message, you know.
=^uu^=
WV: "ershi"--raw chocolate, wrapped in seaweed
Some people just need to get a life. I love the Potter cakes! We faithfully read you website everyday and just love it!
These cakes are all awesome! I wish I had the talent/imagination to make something like these!
WV is "ingestsl" I would like to ingest a slice of that Hedwig cake.
Harry's birthday is the 31st. Do we get more?:)
Cooool! Looks like several someones have been working magic in the kitchen. ;)
Random Factoid of the Day: Male snowy owls are the all-white ones, not the females. Females have black oval-shaped spots on their feathers. Seeing as Hedwig is portrayed as an all-white female, I can only conclude Hedwig suffers from gender confusion. ;D
Janine, Janine! I so totally agree!
And Narnia cakes? Does such an animal exist? Books are awesome, any books, but I've been a CoN fan since back in the 70s. My dog is named Lucy. I didn't care for Susan all that much.
Those are very cool! Still loving this theme ^-^
smashing!!
I'd like to see some Potter wrecks, because I bet they're out there.
Donna said at 9:36 am what I was going to say now. And Twitter-style, I think I still have some letters lef
Wow that mandrake one really has that "That's a CAKE?!? Serious??" aspect to it.
This post made me read over the last Sunday Sweets posts for my amusement. Like so many other people, the mandrake is definitely my fave!
Someone mentioned Narnia cakes... I must agree, it would be great to see some (wrecky or not!).
wv: 'forma' -What a drunk wonder twin might say: "Wonder twin powersh, avictate! Forma... Gorilla!"
"Oooooohh pretty!"
Oh my gosh, I can't get over how adorable that little owl is on the first cake! I want it! These are so amazing - I think I like them better than last week's!
And a Rita Skeeter cake is an AWESOME idea! Or even better, how about an Umbridge cake! :p
Didn't think you could top the "all Was Well" cake from last week, but that Mandrake cake is close! Squee!
I'm not personally a HP fan, but whatever floats your boat. The cakes are really cool, though - very well done!
I love that second cake.
The snitch is perfect, the potion bottle is so cool and it definitely looks like the book pages are fondant free (at least the top book sure does)!
WV: trimi - what you say to your hairdresser. "Just trimi."
fantastic! o uch awesome and cuteness. must say I really want a fondant scarf now, yet all I can make is fondant piggies :( Monster book too cute though!
Don't like Harry Potter but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a beautiful cake. Or many. /drool
Just FABULOUS!!! I'm so jealous...and now hungry.
I still say the Sorting Hat cake blows me away! And yes, I know it's not the same Sorting Hat cake. I'm partial.
Oooooh...pretty! Add me to the mandrake cake fans!
And please, please, please do a post on Terry Prachett cakes!
sooooo pretty!
I like the first cake and specially the castle cake. So amazing, does it really light up?!
Not a fan of Harry Potter, but those cakes are awesome creations, they're great.
@ Send In the Clowns
That was irony, commenting on all the witless remarks made over the last few weeks about racism and witchcraft. I've made a couple of similar postings - see the Disney character thresd - showing that, if done correctly, it is possible to register offence at practically anything. Its a comment on how small minded some people seem to be and not meant to be taken literally.
Awesome cakes... Esp the mandrake. :D
I adore Harry Potter, so to see it in any form [ESPECIALLY done well] is always exciting. These cakes are amazing, as are John and Jen (loved your responses last week :) )
I love these cakes! And the last ones too! My fav is the book with the glasses and Hogwarts scarf on it.
It's not easy being a nerd. The Golden Snitch is my favorite but the first thing I thought (after "oooh preeetty!" of course) was "Hey! Snitches are gold balls with silver wings!"
The movies make the same mistake so I guess I'll just have to deal :)
I'm totally fascinated by teh light up cake. I wish I could see that one in person more than any of the others
You know, this weekend Sponge Bob Square Pants turned 10. Why on Earth give us more Harry Potter when there are probably some great Sponge Bob cakes out there? The ball feels missed.
OMG!!! My idea for my wedding cake!!!Tonks and Lupin as the bride and Groom!!! Genius!
and these cakes....*runs around screaming* They are Awesome!!! Mandrake and the snitch!!!! the cakes captured my heart!! (and fed my already obsessive HP heart)
Ps: sorry for too much exclamation marks...
The mandrake is amazing!
Harry Potter rocks, in a social, political, and religious sense :) I heart these cakes.
All of the cakes are loooovely. I would second Anonymous- are there Discworld cakes out there?
I wasn't going to say anything, was just going to admire from afar...but oh, the monster book!! THE MONSTER BOOK! LOVE!
@ Capability Bowes
the thing about irony is that it has to be obvious to work - when you make a joke but forget to indicate that you are joking then you are the one being offensive.
Nice HP cakes! I think it would've been kind of funny if there was a picture of a blank cake board and the baker said it was a cake of the invisibility cloak. Haha!
Missed the fun yesterday!
Incredible cakes!
Still depriving my children of the sublime euphoria of Harry Potter.
WV: Ovessess. I think some people get too ovessessed with HP.
These cakes are awesome! I love the snitch and the mandrake best. And last week? The sorting hat cake, hands down.
Oooh pretty!
I've loved your Sunday Sweets: Potter posts - you pretty much rock this blog.
1st Anon - There's a great discworld cake here.
I love the Monster Book cake especially.
Those are just lovely, amazing works of art.
And yeah, we need an Alan Rickman cake. I would lick it endlessly and with great gusto. And no regret.
I'd have so much trouble eating them. Then again, I'd have trouble eating many on this site, for other reasons.
Ver = anglin
I'm anglin' to keep MY cakes outta the gallery o' horrors!
@ Capability Blows,
Hey, *I* get that you were being facetious; it's your "small-minded" folks who likely don't appreciate the fun of it all.
What's a person to do? You can please some of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. The first and last actually mean the same thing, but there it is. C'est la vie.
Hedwig appears to be channeling Molly Weasly there with her plump sternness :)
Beautiful and Brilliant, though I am still petitioning for HP wrecks!
For a second I thought the quittich ball was the Golden Uterus Award.
My name is on one!!! Would love a HP cake....sigh....
