I'm indebted to reader Amy O. for not only informing me that today is the Marine
Corps' birthday, but for also providing a little Wreckage to go with! Now, her e-mail was positively loaded with important-sounding acronyms, but from what I could decipher she gets to inspect some of the
DFAC's (that's dining facilities)
cakey creations over in Iraq - you know, when she's not defending truth, justice, and top-secret acronym-creations.
To be fair, this isn't
too bad. Someone just hit the "align right" button before piping in "Devil Dogs":

(That little
smudgie next to the "s" is supposed to be an exclamation mark.) There are more spacing issues around the logo, too, and speaking of which... Uh, Amy, I think I need to look up the Marines' logo again, because that bit below the eagle looks like a...well... [shifty eyes]
Never mind. I got enough
flak today for the Mario Lopez eye candy remark. ;)
SO...how 'bout that wonky "s" and "f" in "
semper fi", eh? I mean, hey, what's THAT all about?

A little crazy cake, but yea for acknowledging the USMC Birthday!!! My husband is fighting for our truth, justice, and all that jazz right now! :-)
uhh. The eagle has landed on a #2!
Predicting a giant outcry in 3..2..
(but it really does look like...you know...)
They're trying to make it look Greek, yo.
Angie (from over at www.HalfAssedKitchen.com)
Well, let's hope you don't get too much flak over your "flaq" mithspelling.
That's a pretty sad looking EGA (Eagle, Globe, & Anchor for you non-acronym using types).
Hey, at least it looks like it's not done in fondant!
Seriously, though, a projector and a grid can help anyone align correctly. Is it so hard?
@ heartafire:
Oops.
:)
Happy Birth Day to my fellow Marines.
Semper Fi.
And yeah, that anchor looks a little.. ok A LOT off.}:P
Well, they had good intentions, I guess. As for the the logo - I don't know enough about the real thing to know what all those splootches of frosting are "supposed to be" so I'll just say that I would have chosen a different "font" for the "FI"
They probably weren't hired by Wilton.
But hey, at least that one looks edible. Just avoid the, um, Eagle-ish area.
Wow. That anchor (if that is the anchor and not what it really looks like) does look like it's done some deep sea diving, wink wink.
Is no one else concerned about the questionable line of smoke coming out of that eagle's beak? Terrible!
I may be wrong, but I don't believe "flaq" is a word...

Like to say Happy Birthday to my hubby who served 8 years in the corp! (But the cake... ouch... but knowing Marines, they found the hilarity in all of it, and ate it too!)
THAT was an anchor??? I need to go get our boat out of storage and double check what's been keeping us "secure" all this time....
Happy Birthday Marines!!
that was supposed to be an anchor?!?
um, a strangely "happy" anchor?
and oddly poo-colored.
(real word verification: throw
cool!)
And "Dogs" looks like it's written larger than "devil"
Happy Birthday DevilDOGS!
I wonder if the cake was decorated by an Army or Navy veteran to emphasize Dogs that way.
It looks like the eagle has ripped off somebody's nutsack. That's just priceless.
Oh, anchor! Thanks for explaining, wolf. I looked at this cake in a large size and the anchor looked pornographic.
you've got to be pretty brave to wreck a USMC cake. Lordy, I know I wouldn't want a bunch of unhappy Marines knowing where I worked.
Happy B-day USMC!
That EGA is seriously wrong. The eagle is not supposed to be bigger than the earth. And those continets ate supposed to be north and south America. The anchore and the rope around it look so very wrong, in many ways!
Honestly though, the birthday balls I went to most of us were to drunk to notice what the cake looked like.
At least everything is spelled correctly, even though centering is obviously a problem.
Hiya. First time posting, long time fan here. This cake brought me out of lurking.
I work on a Marine base (the hubby is one) and...yeah. The anchor is definitely wonky. Especially to those of us who see it every day at work. ^^

That "questionable line of smoke" is supposed to be a banner with Semper Fidelis written in it, heh. I'm the proud wife of a Marine (didn't get close enough to see the cake last night at our ball, though...) and that's just....hilarious. The anchor - oh lordy. *giggle*
A valiant attempt...
Ahhhh, cakes in Iraq. My husband sent a few pics of some while he was over there. One got damaged in an alarm...a srgnt. was carrying the cake, alarm went off, she ever so gently placed the cake on the ground, then went into panic mode and dove herself to the ground...landing ON TOP of the cake!!! I laughed oh so hard at the pic of that cake!
Jen - go with the "flaq for the reference to Iraq" purposeful mis-spelling! LOL!
Seen worse, but at least it's apropos to the date! :D Happy birthday Marines! Thank you for your service! Enjoy your (strange) cake!!!
That is a huge cake. Even if you avoided the odd bit beneath the eagle you could still pig out.
It is Marine Corps, not Marine Corp. It isn't a corporation.
This might the first time I've ever seen anything in Latin appear with an exclamation mark.
Semper fi, y'all!
is it just me or does the cake look oddly not rectangular?
and that's supposed to be an anchor?
For those wondering, this is the emblem of the USMC:
http://www.mclcb.org/images/marine%20corps%20logo.jpg
and lol, andrea, the panic-mode cake story cracks me up!!
~daughter of a marine, and I share a birthday with USMC (you'd think that'd help my dad remember it!)
i should point out that United States and "Marine Corps" are supposed to be centered at the top and bottom of the seal...oops.
oh yeah, and the "continents" on the globe look more like the eagle ate some bad cake...and maybe some corn.
-Jeff (USMC)
Poor eagle. He;s just dropping a giant turd of freedom... probably on Afghanistan.
Gooberfishbowl said Seriously, though, a projector and a grid can help anyone align correctly. Is it so hard?
Ah, so that's the secret! I honestly had no idea how decorators produced perfectly-aligned cakes. I thought maybe they had just developed an advanced sense of spacing and alignment over time. In hindsight, it's blindingly obvious. :)
Y'know.. I can't really complain about the emblem, but centering "Marine Corps" ? Would that really have been so hard.. ?
Oddly enough, it's not the anchor under the eagle that bothers me. It's the F in Fi. It looks like someone was trying to do a vine or something. It just doesn't look very Marine like to me.
Pardon my vertigo eyes, but this cake looks like a saloon sign hanging outside the Officer's Pastry Club.
Another reson to love our Military tho.

Oohrah =)
I think I`m being sexually frustrated or something...I keep seeing naughty bits on cakes O_O
And the...thing below the eagle? Ow.
SK
And here I was, thinking the Eagle had landed on a giant ball of yarn with God only knows what sticking out of it.
~Amy B
Hey Jen, also did you notice the "233rd" spelling mistake on top of the cake? I think you forgot...
Cesar
I guess this is what happens when you let men decorate/come up with an idea for a cake. Especially a bunch of Marines. It'll still get eaten in the end so I guess thats all that matters. Hopefully I won't have one to contribute after this weekend. That EGA is a little FUBAR haha. along with the 'S' and 'F' in Semper Fi.
Happy Birthday Marine Corps :)
-Justine R.
the last part means to marines everywhere. I watch to much NCIS.
Semper Fidelis is Latin for "Always Faithful"
