Sunday Sweets: Cupcakes!
Sunday, November 2, 2008
Check out this fabulousness from Bakerella:
It's everyone's favorite fat cat: Garfield! I used to collect the books when I was a kid. How cool is it that Bakerella included Pooky and Nermal, the World's Cutest Kitten, too?
Since I'm more of the Garfield generation, I don't claim to know who any of these Pokemon characters are:
But they sure are cute. Reader Kelly made them for her son's birthday. Ok, Kelly, you got me: I do love them.
And lastly, many of you have sent in these 3 beauties made by hello naomi over on Flickr:
See, now this is the way to do a cupcake-cake: don't ice them all together, and reference an 80's video game!
Another example:
I call dibs on the green mushroom!
Not only are these robot cupcakes the perfect collision of geekdom and cuteness, but the parts are also interchangeable. So, you can mix up the heads and arms and such to make different robot cupcake combos. Super nifty.

What's a Wreck?
What's a Wreck?
A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.
Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Where's the book?
We don’t have any copies of Cake Wrecks for sale here, autographed or otherwise. We decided the shipping and handling costs would be too high to make it worth your while. So instead, buy your copies locally or online and then order personalized bookplates: it’s cheaper, easier, and I think even looks a bit nicer.

How, how, HOW do they get the frosting so smooth?
I really want to know.
Angie (from over at www.HalfAssedKitchen.com)
I am told by my son that your Pokemon are Snorlax, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pipplup, Munchlax and Tertwig. I'm sure that you feel better for knowing that.
Oh, I totally want the Pacman one for my next big occasion!
these are gorgeous! :)
Okay, now these are really awesome!!
bagsy the mario one (yessss.....)
Garfield and Pacman...how could you go wrong?! I love those!!
These are awesome-especially Garfield and Mario!
OMG, those are seriously the cutest and most clever cupcakes (and CCCs) I've ever seen!
Angie - I believe they were done with fondant to get the smooth look and cut-out designs.
ok these are about all too cute to eat I LOVE the garfield and Company ones... and the pac man and mario and and and heck my faith in cupcake decor is renewed!
AWESOME!
I want a mario one! That is sooo cute!
Those are all definitely wonderful! And further proof that cupcakes are best on their own, and do not play well with others, in the frosting sense at least.
Those are all so amazing, I don't think I could eat them. I could stare at them all day though!
Kelly and I are on the same baking forum (baking911.com) and I've been loving those pokemon cupcakes for months now. Her descriptions of how she made them are INSANE. Exacto knives, templates, hours and days of work.
And yes, definitely fondant to make the smooth tops. There's probably buttercream underneath the fondant.
I call dibs on the green mushroom!
You mean the 1upcake? ;-)
Okay, Odie's having some serious facial issues, there, but I WANT Pookey!!!!
Cute!
And I'm no decorator, but are those frosted with marzipan? They look like it.
Delicious! I'm loving your blog.
Now those are CCCs!
Simply beautiful.
Angie, it's because they are using fondant instead of traditional frosting. To me, it's not as tasty, but it sure it pretty.
I'm much older than you, but I still collected "Garfieldabilia" back in the day, so I was tickled to see the Garfield family on cake! And done SO beautifully too! And Pacman--another of my loves from that period--I can't even IMAGINE how long these cupcakes took to decorate! Awesome.
I cannot tell you how excited I am to see my cupcakes here!!
Thanks so much for posting them. :^)
My son was so excited when he saw them.
I used homemade marshmallow fondant to make the Pokemon faces. There is a thin layer of buttercream underneath.
I did a tutorial on www.baking911 if you are interested in the process.Again, thanks!!
Okay, the Princess Peach cupcake is, like, a dream come true! I want it!
Those cupcakes all look fantastic! I wish mine looked like that. Love it!
Those are amazing!
Yeah, but what about FROSTED cupcakes? (non-fondant)
I am so glad that I didn't see the Pokemon cupcakes earlier, or I would've been slaving over them for my son's birthday party. What great cupcakes! I think the Mario cupcakes are my inspiration for my sons's next birthday party.
LOVE pacman and mario! We still pull out the ol' 64 a couple times a year and play Mario Kart, because I don't care how much better it is on the newer platforms, I'm still infatuated with the 64.
I want the robot ones for my nest occasion! They'd be so much fun! I think my friends would spend all evening re-arranging parts amongst themselves to form the perfect robot :-)
Love the cupcakes, especially the Garfield ones. Kudos to Kelly for the great Pokemon cc, and the link to bakery 911.
I love these soooooo much!
And I call Princess Peach!
Okay, I want the robot cupcakes for my next birthday party. Even if I'm 25, I can still have a cute cake, right? :D
I am SO grateful for todays Sunday post. After the horrors of last week and a birthday coming up, I was getting a little nervous.
These are very inspiring.
What an incredible job this must be! You get to be insanely creative all day long.
The ones who do it right are almost unbelievable, well I guess the ones who get it wrong are too, just in a different way.
You picked a great topic!
All I can say is this post was totally "wreck"less.
The cupcakes are, in fact, very cool -but as for the eating factor - where's the yummy mounds of icing?? Fondant looks very neat and professional - but in my experience doesn't hold a candle to really yummy icing in the taste department. Find us some frosted cupcake montages!
I grew up collecting the Garfield books as well. But I grew out of it. At least until I discovered garfieldminusgarfield.net , where some guy is photoshopping Garfield out of old strips to show just how psychotic Jon really was. Hysterical stuff
I love those robot cupcakes! I just want to mix them all up! :) But ... dibs on the Arlene cupcake. She looks tasty.
Those are the BEST cupcakes I have ever seen!!
So cute! But that Garfield looks baked in more ways than one.
I love this blog! The wrecks are hiLARious (I always laugh at them at work!) and the Sunday Sweets are always awesome! :)
They are extremely cute, but they don't look like they optimize tastiness. A nice plain choco-buttercream might taste better.
All of those cupcakes are adorable! I'm extremely impressed!!!
I'm enough of a geek that I spent a little too much time mentally re-arranging the Pac-Man cupcakes to see if I could get an actual maze out of them.
What creativity and talent! These are some of the cutest cupcakes I have ever seen. I am madly in love with the Pacman cupcakes.
Actually, the second-from-bottom Pokemon cupcakes are of my dog, Tuck. Seriously.
Am I missing something? I don't know why everyone is against the cupckakes frosted together in a sheet. I think some of them are well done. What's with the CCC hate?
Love the cupcakes. My son was also able to name all the Pokemon! We love your blog!!!
These are great inspirations as far as cupcakes go (which is pretty far, IMO). Those are all fantastic, but I have to say that the Mario CCC wins out in Sunshine Land.
Now I really want to make some marshmallow fondant for cupcakes! And... in the process, probably create some cake wrecks of my own (on accident!).
They are so adorable! Love the garfield ones. And the mario ones.
Those are actually very, very good!
~Amy B.
So I don't know if you missed the memo but everyone hates Garfield. Those cupcakes are still gorgeous, but Garfield is the most predictable, boring, unfunny, catering-only-to-the-lowest-common-denominator strip in history. You want some good cartoon cats? Check out Achewood.
Or check this out for some Garfield strips that are actually funny.
Those are beautiful
I love the idea of interchangeable cupcakes. I wanna do something with that. :)
These are wonderful!
These are all nerdy and adorable. So I coin the word: Nerdorable.
hi jen --- thanks for your post; as a child of the 80s (gah! must.fight.adulthood.so.hard.) it was a great pick-me-up after a supremely cruddy day. Keep up the good work!
ohhh i specially love the Mario cupcakes!!
I really agree with you on cupcakes - they must be individual - otherwise , bake a cake!!
Yes its fondant - roll it out and cut! Smoooooth.
Awesome!! I think I need to make the Mario ones or the Pacman ones for my hubby's 28th birthday next year. He too grew up on them.
Pac + Man = Awesomeness!

Those cupcakes are amazing! They must have use orchard icing, I think, to get it so detailed. I wouldn't want to eat them - but my 4 year old daughter is trying to eat he princess cupcake off the computer screen!
I loved Garfield comics as a kid too! Those are beyond adorable.
I'm having so much PMS right now, but just seeing those cupcakes made me feel so much better. I'm a cupcake lover by heart.
And should I feel that I'm from a weird generation loving both pokémon and Garfield (not to mention I think Pacman is great and Mario is soo cool)? :P
A Paperback Writer, I think Odie IS a serious facial issue. But you're right, the Pookie one is absolutely adorable.
I hope they taste good, though. It would be a shame to go all that trouble for an edible, and then have them be chalky or sub-par--like a few wedding cakes I could mention.
I think Naomi makes the most gorgeous cupcakes ever! And to think she's a robotics engineering student (something like that) by day!
Isn't fondant wonderful?? Those are really cute cupcakes. I do prefer bigger cakes myslef, but these are really cute. I happen to like the Mario ones as well.
Amy
Wow those are fantastic! :)
I am LOVING those Mario & Robot cupcakes!
Garfield and Mario are amazing & Gorgeous . Thanks
yes, they're pretty. But--how do they taste?!
Oh those are almost too nice to eat! Can I have the one with Pac-Man on it?
I came by to look again. Read more comments. I can't speak for the garfield/mario/pacman/robot cakes, but I am 100% certain that the pokemon ones were delish! I have used the same recipes as Kelly, and Marshmallow fondant is definitely the way to go fondant-wise. YUM-O.
Those Garfield cupcakes are cute enough to almost–almost–make up for the Garfield movie.
Those are the sweetest cupcakes I've ever seen. I especially love the Garfield and robot ones!
*gasp!* ohmigosh it's Pookie! :D
You're putting so many nice cakes in! =( more horrible ones to laugh at please! =)))
I love the interchangeable parts!
Pac-man and Mario...cool!
www.goinggreenaccidently.blogspot.com
Those all look so delicious, but just too beautiful to eat. Has anyone called dibs on the Pac man cup cake? And will they make a Mrs. Pacman cake? =D
What a clever blog! I used to have zero interest in cakes or cupcakes or baked goods in general, but your blog has given me a new appreciation and makes me want to give baking a try, surprisingly enough.
I live in Japan and just passed a bakery filled with some pretty funky looking cakes but I didn't have my camera. I'll be sure to take some photos next time I walk by and forward them to you!
Those robot cupcakes are AWESOME!
Well all of them just reek wonderful anyway. Those Mario cupcakes are adorable - almost as awesome as the Mario cake! (Yeah, I'm obsessed with it)
Pookie cupcakes!
Maybe it's just me, but although these cupcakes are pretty works of art, something about the layers of fondant on top just don't whisper sweet "eat me" nothings in my ear. What ever happened to good ol' chocolate cupcakes with lots of homemade chocolate icing? Prolly gone to the great Ice Cream Social in the sky. A shame.

At least they didn't slap icing across the entire thing and call it a day! Love the Pac-Man...looks like a little puzzle. Very cute. And the Garfield gang...super cute!
A-ha! Now we know the difference between bad cupcakes and good cupcakes: fondant.
LOVE those!! So super cute!!
These are all fantastic, but the robots look like the most fun because you actually have an excuse to play with your food.
Oooh! These are awesome & way too cute to eat. Jigglypuff was definitely my favourite Pokemon! :)
WOW. Do they sell those somewhere, because I want those for every occasion from now on. Especially the Pacman and Super Mario Brothers ones. Now that's how to make a cupcake cake! Amazing!
Oh, I love, love, love the robot cupcakes. I wish I could make cupcakes that looked that nice.
I could never eat a Nermal cupcake... how do you eat the world's cutest kitten? ;)
Hey, Piplup isn't a 90's Pokemon! I call shenanigans!
LOVE them!!!
Caroline M's son is spot on with the Pokemon....curse having 2 boys who incessantly speak Pokemon! LOL! I have plenty of useless trivia floating about my brain!
Though, I'd LOVE to know Kelly - and have her make my son's birthday cupcakes!!! Is she a professional?? Seriously - I'd love those!!! :D
Alright, everyone, stand aside and let the 90's Child identify your Poke-cupcakes for you... ;)
From top to bottom:
Snorlax: A large and fat Pokemon, its favorite thing in the world is sleeping. Its second favorite thing? Eating--it can eat hundreds of pounds of food all at once. Translation? These cupcakes would be gone like that. ;)
Pikachu: The "Mascot" of Pokemon, as it were. It's a forest-dwelling mouse that can make electricity. It stores electrical charges in those cute little red cheeks. Leaves a tingle on your tongue in cupcake-form. :P
Jigglypuff: A round, fluffy Pokemon, it can put people to sleep by singing its beautiful, soothing song. Unfortunately, this annoys it, and it then draws on peoples' faces to get revenge. I'm sure it would be placated if you left it cupcakes for its performance, though. :P
Piplup: A 'mon-come-lately, Piplup is a penguin Poke that considers itself to be nobility. It will refuse food if it doesn't consider it "worthy" of its refined tastes. These cupcakes are a shoe-in, though.
Munchlax: The "baby" form of Snorlax, above. Its priorities are reversed--eat first, THEN sleep. Watch your cupcakes. :P
Turtwig: A cute turtle Pokemon, and another recent addition. Sadly, I can't think of any cupcake jokes for this one! Oh pooh. :(
Re the PacMan cupcakes, black icing is black icing whether cream or fondant. YUCK.
awesome! go pac-man and super mario! love them!
I had no idea cupcake cakes could be this successful. I thought it was one of those "could never be done right" things. I'm pleased I'm wrong! These cupcake cakes are cute and lovable.
They truly reach the child in us.
you dont know the pokemon characters?
they are (top to bottom) snorlax, pikachu, jigglypuff, piplup, munchlax, and turtwig.
What a great collection, nice and cute XD
It will be quite a waste to eat the cake..
Omg when I saw this it made me hungry. This was one very creative article.
