Why We Need More Male Cake Decorators

Monday, September 22, 2008

Apparently this is supposed to look like a baseball field. For those of you who don't see a problem with it, do like I did and go ask your husband. (Or if you're at work, that annoying guy a few cubicles over who starts every conversation with "Dude, did you see the game last night?".)

Of course, if baseball fields were laid out this way, I bet the sport would be a lot more interesting. You know, in a Funniest-Home-Videos kind of way.

Further evidence of female involvement: that lace doily under the cake. I'm pretty sure no guy would feel the urge to "pretty up" the cake board - or for that matter, add an airbrushed red stripe on the side. What's that for, anyway?

MaryAnn C., I would say this is a home run, but on this cake you just can't do that. (The home run, that is.)

NOTE: Yeah, yeah, I know not all women are clueless about sports, just like I know there are probably guys out there who wouldn't know a baseball field isn't laid out in a giant 'X'. I simply choose not to acknowledge those people.

Ok, we're only gonna go over this once:

Google- Baseball field... images. In that order. Please.

Kopperhead said...

Too funny! With this setup I would at least have expected a few plastic players on that nice green infield. Or a bat and ball somewhere. Are we sure this is supposed to be a baseball diamond??

The Courteous Chihuahua said...

Also, baseball isn't played at Wimbledon on a grass court...LOL

Anonymous said...

This is great, if you're playin' baseball for Jesus.

Anonymous said...

I knew right away it was a baseball field..but it took me several moments to figure out what was wrong. Where is my coffee?

Anonymous said...

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm clueless about sports, and even I know baseball diamonds aren't supposed to look like that...

Maybe the red stripe is because the birthday boy is a Braves fan? *points to the Braves flag in the background*

Kameron said...

I would hate to field a ground ball off of that infield!

Overmatter said...

The left field wall at Fenway Park is known as "The Green Monster." I think it may have some competition now.

Trevor said...

I would LOVE to see more male cake decorators. I go to a class and am usually the only one!

Anonymous said...

That's not the Braves, it's the Cleveland Indians.

Which doesn't explain the cake, I just thought I'd point that out for kenya.

Anonymous said...

Someone forgot to mow the baseball field...and failed geometry.
~Amy B

Anonymous said...

@Kenya Starflight: You really are clueless at sports, hon; that's the Cleveland Indians' flag in the front of that cluster (along with what looks like the Mets, the Cardinals, and...I don't know what that "T" is), not the Atlanta Braves'.

Beth said...

Nope, Yankees fan. Love that nice kelly green logo on what is probably supposed to be home plate.

Anonymous said...

At least it looks yummy.

k-bro said...

Hahahaha!

I'm one of those rare female baseball fans, and I'm trying to figure out how this game would be played.

Pitcher throws the ball...batter gets a base hit...then, what?, charges the mound and tackles the pitcher on the way to first? What if it's an extra base hit? That would require twice as much running, each base requiring a trip to the mound. And what about a walk? *shudder* Too confusing. And totally hilarious.

Etiquette Bitch said...

baseball field? i was thinking very messed-up putting green, or a helicopter landing pad. i had no idea of "baseball" until i read the text. ugh! wonder what the cake recipient thought of his cake?

Anonymous said...

So would this cake be the new "full contact" baseball field design I've been hearing of?!

Anonymous said...

You know, I think I would pay good money to see the game k-bro described. Kind of like a combination between football and baseball. FUN!

KLZ said...

As a Clevelander, that is most definitly Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians and don't let anyone tell you any different!!! OTOH, I do consider the logo to be somewhat shameful.

Lynn said...

Dimloep, the "T" represents Texas Rangers Baseball.

As for the cake...I can't get past the green claws masquerading as a border. This whole cake is just so wrong. *shudder*

Melissa said...

Well...hmmm... the logo in the top right corner looks like it's for the New York Yankees. Perhaps the cake was for someone who is NOT a Yankee's fan. Yeah... and they were um... making fun of the Yankees by saying this is how they play ball... or... um... something...

Mini Me said...

Too funny! I thought it was an alien mothership landing pad... either that or "X" marks the spot to a hidden big book of cake decorating secrets.

Leslie said...

If it wasn't for all the Indian's decor in the background, I might be questioning if it was supposed to be a cricket field. Now that's a sport I don't understand. (I'm one of those women who likes sports...even NASCAR to my husband's amusment given my background....)

Since you started the whole stereo-typing thing (is that word hyphenated?), I'll add to it. Even if the decorator was a guy, do you really think he'd be all into sports? He' a cake decorator!! Chances are if he watches baseball he isn't paying attention to the field (Hello Matt Holiday! with your hat on of course)

Gretchen said...

This made me laugh because there was a 3 year old on my son's t-ball team this year who ran the bases JUST LIKE THIS! Get a hit, run to pitcher's mound, get shooed to first base by the coaches and parents, next hit, run to pitcher's mound, get shooed to second, etc. This cake is clearly for him, bless his lil heart =)

Chris said...

I thought for sure it was an airport runway.

"Zero-one-niner, coming in for a landing.... and watch out for the men on second and third..."

Schmei said...

Are we certain this isn't an airport? Because that's what I first thought. Perhaps this is a birthday cake for an employee of the Cleveland airport who is also an Indians fan?

I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt here...

Anonymous said...

Clearly this is some twisted cross (har!) between baseball and Parcheesi...

jengersnap said...

Wow, I saw a cardinal rose. Perhaps Jack Sparrow's compass. I never saw parsley covered "baseball DIAMOND" as a possibility. Too funny.

Anonymous said...

And what's up with those green droopy wilted plant-like things on the perimeter; doesn't this cake have a built-in sprinkler system?!

Anonymous said...

Baseball field??? Hell, I thought it was an artist rendition of alien crop circles.

Angela said...

At least it's diamond shaped...

...I'm still puzzled over the red stripe. Team colours?

Amanda said...

I'm with the seeker on the alien thing... I was thinking some sort of metallic crop circle surrounded by...giant leaves??

Anonymous said...

I thought it was a helicopter landing pad.

Anonymous said...

I think the red line is supposed to be the reddish dirt on the baseball diamond, hiding just under the surface of the big fluffy gobs of grass. ... delicious.

Anonymous said...

The landing pad is definitely the way to go on this one...however, when I first saw it I thought it was some kind of governmental infrastructure flow chart.

Anonymous said...

I'm doing my part at getting the male decorator population up!

I have 3 young boys in my Wilton classes this month.

There's hope gang, hang in there!

Anonymous said...

I have had a life-long hate affair with organized team sports.

I actually managed to fail Geometry.

Even I know how wrong this cake is.

What the hell was with the decorator?

Anonymous said...

Okay, I will say that I usually try to figure out the wreck before I read the commentary. My first thought was "golf"--probably because of all the green--and my initial glimpse of it was interpreted as a golf ball with crossed clubs behind it. Then I looked closer.

Yeesh.

The thing is, if you don't just use frosting out of a can, using the rosebud tip can be pretty effective, or at least won't result in droopy swamp grass.

Maybe the red line is just to offset the nasty, blinding amount of Incredible-Hulk green on this darned cake. It needs something. There ain't enough milk in the world.

Sabina E. said...

oh dear god.

Anonymous said...

maybe its not baseball at all.. maybe its cricket.. bit of a sticky wicket, that :-)

sues2u2 said...

Ya gotta be kidding me! I don't like baseball but still... Didn't this decorator take PE in school? I thought every PE class covered the basics of @ least softball.

debbiearnn said...

maybe it's not supposed to be a ball field. maybe it's supposed to be a crop circle or something.

If you build it, they will come...

Momma Trish said...

I imagine with this particular version of the game, a player hits the ball and then runs straight toward the pitcher and tries to beat him senseless with the bat. Gives the pitcher way more incentive to strike him out, don't ya think?

Anonymous said...

I thought it was an airport runway! Tee-Hee!!!

Val Cox said...

oh my goodness, this is my favorite cake wreck so far. Hilarious!

Anonymous said...

Ahhh...someone failed geometry. See it's called a baseball DIAMOND. Not a baseball X. :-D I don't think you need to be a girl that's into sports to see what's wrong with this.
Gotta agree I want to see the game that K-Bro describes though.

Kara said...

If not for the baseball pennants in the back, I would have thought that someone just screwed up a cake that was supposed to look like a Cricket Pitch....

Laura ~Peach~ said...

i actually thought this was some sort of crop rings until i read what it was SUPPOSED to be... sad... very sad LOL.

Oh my. I do not even know what to say.

Anonymous said...

This is great, if you're playin' baseball for Jesus.

Actually, anonymous, I was thinking pirates.

Anonymous said...

If you build it, they will blog.

Becky said...

That's ridiculous. Everyone knows what a baseball field looks like.

Anonymous said...

Oh ye of little faith...

Anonymous said...

Actually, this new baseball field setup might be more fun than the normal one. I mean, how awesome is it to run headfirst into the other players and end up with a concussion?

SouthernSibyll said...

It's called a baseball DIAMOND for a reason. A three-year-old can identify the shape of a diamond, therefore, we can only assume this decorator has the mental capacity less than this.

Anonymous said...

...and if you build it wrong, they will come and laugh at you.

Anonymous said...

Har! Now, see, I was thinking it was a mini-golf green, but couldn't figure out what the center part was for.

Darth Rob said...

When you order a cake, even if its something simple that everyone should get, perhaps you should include a photo to clue in the decorator. Oh and that flag in the background is not the Braves, it's the Cleveland Indians http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=cle

Anonymous said...

Definitely a failed baseball diamond. My first thought was golf, until I saw Chief Wahoo off to the side. Sweet Jesus, this is painful to look at.

The only sports I like are basball and cricket, so I really appreciate the utter failure in this cake.

Nancy Frye said...

My first thought: It's Hungry Hungry Hippos... without the hippos!

Second thought: heliport.

Third: mini golf? Well-manicured airport hub? Street scene with Matchbox cars removed?

Never, ever would it have occurred to me that this was meant to be a baseball field.

PS My "captcha" is "lafnf", which seems appropriate.

Libba said...

My initial thought was, "oh! someone was trying to make a cute mini-golf cake!" Then I stared at it trying to figure out why there were 4 starting points all going to the same spot... Then, you know my next thought? honestly? "The edges make it look like the Care of Magical Creatures book from Harry Potter" - complete with teeth and red gums! :O)

Anonymous said...

@sarah - yes, but that at least is four baseball diamonds, not one with bizarre lines drawn through it.

Re: the possibility of it being a cricket pitch, I think the Yankees' logo on whatever base that is at the top sort of negates that notion.

So sad for the (presumably) little boy whose cake this (probably) is.

~Jenn ODonnell Danza~ said...

wow...that is a LOT of green to eat on that cake.

Unknown said...

not gonna lie..i had to ask my boyfriend what was wrong with the baseball field.

after i stared at it for a WHILE.

Terri said...

What, it's not a crop circle? lol

Anonymous said...

This is about as unlikely to be cricket as it is to be baseball. As someone with a knowledge of at least the vague basics of both I am irritated by the "Oh how could that even be baseball" comments that follow it up with "maybe it's cricket". Go google cricket pitches.

However it is a Terrible decorating job.

Kaye Prince said...

Okay, I’m gonna get a little nit-picky here (since Field of Dreams is one of my favourite movies, and Shoeless Joe is one of my favourite books). The actually line is "If you build it, he will come.", not "they will come" (it's in reference to one person: Joe Jackson). It was appropriated for advertisement after the movie came out, and now everyone says "they".

This cake makes me sad.

Anonymous said...

The sad thing is, not only did I immediately recognize this as a baseball field, but it took me about 10 seconds of concerted effort to see the problem with it.

Anonymous said...

Say it with me people "Baseball DIAMOND". I can't stress that eenough - "DIAMOND". I too was also looking for little plastic baseball players so everybody could look at the cake & say "Ooooh, that's what it's supposed to be".

Diamond, they call it a diamond, gee what american hasn't heard the baseball diamond even if they've never seen one. Oh yeah, I am assuming an American did this cake..Well it could be a whole new craze, something like a crozz between baseball and Parchesi. The red stripe, hmmmm maybe all that grass is coveing up yet another wreck ... you know the wreck layer concept.

Anonymous said...

I think this is for the next Major League movie. You know, where Wolverine and Storm join the team.

Didn't this decorator take PE in school? I thought every PE class covered the basics of @ least softball.)

At my schools, they assumed that we already knew how to play everything. I was clueless, which resulted in the other players hating me.

As for the cake, I recognized it was baseball, but it took a minute for the mistake to reveal itself. It does look a bit overgrown, doesn't it?

Anonymous said...

"Oh no! We gave the decorator a photo of a crop circle by mistake! Oh well, they'll notice it's wrong... right?"

Anonymous said...

Ok, in reference to Kaye..you are right about the 'he' vs. 'they' coming if you build it line in the movie...and I love that movie too...but I always thought that the 'he' they referenced was ultimately his father...since that's the one he wanted to 'have a catch with'.

Oh, and by the way, that cake is just beyond words.

Dea said...

BWAHAHAHAAA!!! Ok, I hate baseball (GASP!) and even *I* would know how the stinkin' baseball DIAMOND should look DOH! Yeah - um, sad.....very very sad....

What is going on in Wisconsin with baseball...I don't get it..??

Unknown said...

Wow. While I'm female and now a huge sports fan, when I saw that I thought, "What the heck is that? Looks like it's some kind of field." When you said it's supposed to be a baseball field... wow. I have no words. Even if you've never seen one, wouldn't you at least try to get a reference picture? And wouldn't the phrase "baseball diamond" tip you off that it's diamond shaped?

Unknown said...

There's a New York Mets pennant in the mix, too. Perhaps this cake was meant for the playoffs last year.

My question is this - if it's four diamonds butted up together, how does the little gumpaste umpire figure out when a ball is in foul territory?

My guess on the red stripe is that it's meant to represent the stitches on the ball (though probably not the beads on a Catholic rosary).

Let's go Cubbies!

Sheri said...

Okay, here's my theory.

Cake recipient is a pitcher. Cake decorator was his dear old mum or his wife, who would want him to feel like the center of the universe on his special day, which explains why the pitcher's mound is much bigger than everything else and why the bases and home plate all lead to the pitcher's mound.

Cuz he's the dude, nnkay?

Terri said...

Maybe I'm just tired, but that baseball cake made me laugh until I cried! That is so funny! I want to see the game they play on THAT field!

Persnickety Ticker said...

At first I knew on some level what this decorator was trying to acheive. Then I just about died laughing. Images of little baseball players wearing eyepatches while trying to dig around in the infield looking for buried treasure at the X.

All it needs Captain Morgan with his foot on the chest on the pitcher's mound. Or at least a bottle of Captain Morgan to drown the sorrows of yet another cake wreck.

Anonymous said...

To the people who pointed out my mistake about what team it was -- sorry. I don't pay attention to individual pro teams.

Yeah but if you turn it slightly, it will be a diamond and not a square.
I am clueless about baseball other than knowing it's supposed to be a diamond.

I'm pretty sure the "drippy" border is supposed to be leaves. Perhaps it's meant to invoke the ivy-covered walls of Wrigley Field? Of course, that would imply that the decorator had seen a baseball field.

With it being SO easy to find out how a baseball diamond is laid out, one can only presume that the cake decorator didn't know and was simply lazy.

The red stripe makes the cake look like it's bleeding. even if you have never seen a baseball game i'm pretty sure you sholud know that blood is not usually involved.

If you blur your eyes it may be an attempt at 2 baseball bats crossed with a ball in the middle. But the "ball" still doesn't look like a baseball.

Clearly it is supposed to be some kind of baseball thing. There is a NY Yankees logo on it.

I'm dying for an explanation!!

I am the one that purchased the cake. I am the wife of a HUGE Yankee fan. It was a baseball themed party for my husband's 30th birthday. I asked the cake decorator to make a baseball field and I did have plastic baseball players to put on it.....but after seeing what she did to the cake I just left it the way it was. I didn't know the outcome of the cake until I got to the party (I had my sister-in-law pick it up for me). I was beyond upset about the way it looked...but all the guests got a kick out of it. However, the cake did taste awesome.

heartafire said...

Angel,
Actually, if you turn it sideways....it's STILL an X !!!!!

Anonymous said...

It might not be a baseball field, but I think it's very pretty. The grass was awesomely done - it reminded me of some Greenpeace/environment thing, or maybe the top of a "green" building. Not bad.

Anonymous said...

I was going to post a rant about why is a baseball infield called a "diamond", when it is clearly a SQUARE. Then AngelJoy clarified it for me... from the perspective of the stands, or anywhere on the ground, it sort of looks like a diamond. I try to avoid this perspective (being near a baseball game) unless it includes free food and drinks, so if I go to a game, I am not noticing what the field looks like. But agreed with Heartafire, turning an X does not make it look any less like an X.

And also, like Orianna, I was scarred by the mean kids and overzealous coach/parent of the 8 year old softball league who assumed all 8 year olds already know how to play. But even I know what a baseball "diamond" looks like.

ha ha!

I realize this post was a while ago but the cake actually reminds me of a variation of cricket I played in primary school (in Australia), with four bowlers (at the 'ends' of the cross) and either one or two (I forget) batsmen in the middle defending the wicket. If you touched the ball with your bat you had to run out to person who bowled it. Now that was a game to make kids run.

Anonymous said...

This setup actually reminds me a bit of "beep baseball," AKA baseball for the blind. The batter stands at the center, hits the ball (which is beeping), then heads towards one of three bases (which is also beeping).

However, I'm pretty darn sure that is not what either the cake purchaser or the wreckerator had in mind.
