The Day the Spaceship Earth Stood Still

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Wow, is it Earth Day already? Hard to believe it's been almost a year since the Epcot Episode.

Yep, for you wreckies who've joined us in the past year, Epcot made its unintentional Cake Wrecks debut in honor of Earth Day, 2009. You can read the original post here, but in a nutshell: I posted a Spaceship Earth cake, and then made the mistake of calling it a Spaceship Earth cake. We then got about fifty billion comments (give or take fifty billion) telling us it was NOT Spaceship Earth, but Epcot. Many also helpfully pointed out that you could tell it was Epcot by the Disney font used on the cakeboard.

Now, as every Disney Geek knows, Epcot is the theme park and Spaceship Earth is the Big Golf Ball™ - and I am a huge Disney Geek. Plus, and here's the part that was especially painful/hilarious, John and I made the cake.

(Yeah, I know it's not great. That's why I posted it. However, I am one of only two or three people on the planet who've ever even attempted a Spaceship Earth cake. So, you know, I've got that going for me.)

Now, in honor of this auspicious occasion I would like to shower you with Earth and/or Spaceship Earth wrecks.

Erm...

Unfortunately, despite extensive research performed during the commercial breaks for Dancing with the Stars (Go, Niecy!), I couldn't find any.

Still, I feel you deserve some kind of reward for reading this far without any new wreckage. So, here, I found you another Disney icon that's gray and round:

Piglet! What have they done to you?

Wow. Just look at the size of that head! I'm not kidding, that is a huge noggin'! It's a virtual planetoid! It has its own weather system! And it's giving me an excuse to quote Stuart Mackenzie!

Oh, and if you look closely, you can see that he recently swallowed a small globe. Or has a globe-shaped tumor growing out of his shoulder - take your pick. Whichever: Hel-looo! Earth Day tribute!

Mandy P., try to work "like Sputnik: spherical but quite pointy in parts" into as many conversations today as possible. Because the earth needs you, that's why.

Sorry, Jen -- I think that second cake is Eeyore, not Piglet. See the donkey ear? And the donkey tail? But the poor critter looks even more unhappy than usual over being compressed into a little ball of @$$...

I'm a huge Disney geek too and I can't believe that people think that is Epcot itself. There is an actual ride in there (a particularly good one) and the structure/ the ride is indeed called Spaceship Earth. I too get a bit pet peevish when people make Disney mistakes so I'm glad it's not only me :) I think it's a rather nice cake.

Wendy said...

And now we know what it'd look like if Piglet and Eeyore had a baby. Mark my words, Emma will be explaining this to a therapist some day.

XOXO said...

Jen - every time I think I couldn't possibly love you more, you do something - like quote "So I Married an Axe Murderer" and make me love you just THAT much more!

Cheers!

I think Eeyore actually swallowed Piglet. So sad.

Tricia L said...

Did they only have one round pan to work with? Considering an average home baker can make a decent rabbit out of two round pans, I'm stunned. That's all I can say. Stunned. Poor Eeyore.

Danielle said...

I wonder how many comments you are going to get telling you it isn't Piglet?

Megan (Best of Fates) said...

Oh Eeyore - did nobody warn you of the possible downsides to gastric bypass?

Budgyrl said...

To me it appears that poor Eeyore is being punched in the face. Is this one of those optical illusions? Very sneaky...

I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts!

bassgirl said...

Eeyore's favorite birthday present was a deflated balloon. I think we have a deflated Eeyore balloon here. Where's Christopher Robin? Eeyone needs you!

OtherRobert said...

Really? Calling it a Spaceship Earth cake was controversial? I thought that was common knowledge. Then again, EPCOT was my favorite park because it was so educational. With all the pavilions closing down and the Disneyfication of educational content growing (Finding Nemo Presents: The Living Seas, complete with holographic projections that scare the crap out of the actual sea creatures), I'm losing my favorite theme park in the world.

Of course, I look at that Eeyore cake and realize how much worse it could be. I'm not melting into a depressed puddle of goo.

Sheila Bennett said...

Now, how do you get Piglet out of that? Looks like it "may" be Eeyore, or an Alfred Hitchcock profile. You know, those two things are SO similar. lol

and how many of us will say, "looks like epcot" ? in honor of your post one year ago???

and 'cause we love you !

I'm going to ignore the comments today to avoid seeing how many people don't "get it" and try to correct you that it is not piglet!

Jen and I have the same sense of humor. Intentionally saying the wrong thing when we in fact know what it is.

I think your Spaceship Earth cake is pretty damn good to be honest with you. And I also get annoyed when people make Disney mistakes, like calling the Magic Kingdom, Disney World. The whole thing is Disney World! *deep breath*

Also...a So I Married an Ax Murderer reference? Really? One of my favorite movies ever? I need to read this blog way more often...

And Eeyore, there are just no words.

Amanda in Dallas said...

The idiotic comments about Spaceship Earth being "Epcot" and "SEE THE FONT MAKES IT SO" is blowing my mind! It would be funny if it weren't so sad. I, too, am a die-hard Disney fan and somewhat in shock at the sheer number of people repeating it...I need a drink...

Here in Austin, TX, Eeyore's birthday party will be held in 2 days! Old hippies, young hippies, costumes, silver man, Leslie (cross dresser who ran for mayor and came in 3rd), drum circle, all sorts of craziness. 47th year and proceeds got to charities. Happy Birthday, Eeyore!

I never got to go on the original 'Living Seas'. They remade it just before I went for the 1st time. I was as sad as Eeyore.

Yes, I know it's Eeyore, not Piglet, and I got that (and he's a very sad-looking, disfigured Eeyore, at that). What I really loved was Jen's VERY low key homage to "Caddyshack" - LOVE IT!!! I'm a huge "Caddyshack" fan, and any quote from Bill Murray's character (or any other, for that matter) is FABULOUS, in my book.

This is an early Picasso rendition of Eeyore. Marvel at it's pre-Cubist qualities: disproportioned body shape, questionable appendages (are they legs or...), the shape of the face into the body (where is the actual lower mouth chin), etc. Exquisite my dear.

Perhaps the "Happy Irthday" cake would have been appropriate for today.

Oh, look! It's Eeyore, Salvador Dali style...

I don't know that you're going to get 'Eeyore' to become the new 'Epcot' for this next year, but I'd like to say that 'Epcot' has brought me a lot of laughter.

(Although, was that ONLY a year ago...) :D

Melanie said...

If Eeyore is so depressed, it might have something to do with the large goiter he's become.

Jessie said...

Poor Eeyore...and as an EPCOT cast member I giggle every time I hear people calling Spaceship Earth EPCOT. Oh sillies! :P

Love you guys!

I think that Epcot planet thing rocks! I mean, how are you supposed to make that boring thing better than that? For a replica of a boring giant ball, it's pretty damn amazing. And good disney writing too. Poor self-deprecating cake-wreckee.

Kristan said...

OK, so I went back and read the comments on the Spaceship Earth cake in your original post. I too am a Diz Geek or dizzy geek whichever it may be!!! :), and I think they must not be afterall.

OH, I am friends with the voice in the Spaceship Earth ride. OK so not the voice itself, but the man with the voice of SSE.

I like the cake and I think you did a good job personally.

Poor Eeyore! I think he may need a breast lift! Don't be sad, Eeyore... plastic surgery is your friend! Hollie

purplewowies said...

I think it's supposed to be a (misshappen, circular) baby Eeyore.

No, I know. IT'S EPCOT. You can tell by the decorator's attempt to include a Disney character. You know, Eeylet?

What do you mean that's not a real character? It's a unique and logic defying amalgam of Piglet and Eeyore. Some people call it Pigyore (which can also be used as an insult. And insults are AWESOME).

LOVE the Heed references. Hilarious!

Lord, savas from the people correcting you about Eeyore... ;)

I had been wondering what the Epcot references were all about, but going back to last year's Earth Day post had me CRINGING for you guys. Good Lord, people! It's hilarious in a painful kind of way... or painful in a hilarious kind of way?

Wow. Has it been a year already since the Great Epcot Debacle? That's incredible.

I don't think I ever knew, or at the very least I didn't recall, that you made the infamous Epcot cake! It's pretty cool. :)

And poor, poor Eeyore. I won't show this to my father. :( He'd be so sad.

Goodness me. Poor Eeyore has traded in his Prozac for doobs. Now he's just another statistic!

I had to look up the original post for old times sake (apparently, I enjoy cringeworthy experiences.) I think I only managed to read about 20 comments. I don't know how you guys endured comment moderation that day. How many margaritas did you plow through? Whatever the number, you earned every one.

First - Love the Spaceship Earth cake! It's wonderful! The Eeylet cake.... uhm.... yeah best not think too much about that one.

But I do have to kind of correct Stefanie, I know from the Disney tech people that the official name of the font is Walt's Signature Font. (Yes, I'm nitpicking I know)

I never comment on things, but I just came over from Reader to find out how many people told you it was Eeyore and not Piglet...

My name just so happens to be Emma...and it just so happens that I am TOTALLY requesting that cake for my birthday next year. My birthday will not be complete without an obese Eeyore with a possible cancerous growth.

Looks like what Eeyore would have looked like as painted by Picasso.....

I really hope Niecy stays, (DWTS) she's hilarious, fun to watch, and a total sweetheart. Just like your blog! :D

And wow, I hope Eeyore's tumor is taken care of...yikes. :( No wonder he's so depressed...

I usually just lurk here and lmao, but...OMG!!!!

As the most hugest Winnie-the-Pooh fan in the entire universe , I must inform all of you that Jen is correct. As any REAL, TRUE A.A. Milne geek would know, it's the entire theme park that's called Eeyore, while the ride depicted in this cake wreck is indeed called Piglet.

And now a personal lamentation: why oh why did the powers of the universe let Disney get its hands on the Hundred Acre Wood and all its inhabitants???

Or, as Eeyore would say, "Ohhh-kayyy, thanks for noticin' me..."

PS wv = omerry
LOL how very ironic.

Quick call the plastic surgeon! His face is sagging so badly I doubt even a surgeon could save him poor Eeyore!

I think Eeyore swallowed Piglet-- that's what that lump is, not a globe. ;)

I'm kinda worried about his droopy...well, er, lady areas. I think they were meant to be limbs...but he looks the way I imagine some 90-year-old women look in front there....:)

Jen & John, I think you have opened up some sort of portal for lost soul mates here...I never knew how many people were also total Disney geeks as well as fans of Axe Murderer. About which, two further notes: 1. My son (3) has had a heed like that since birth and his father and I continually say those lines to him and 2. My hubby got Amanda Plummer to autograph our copy of the movie one year when she was in Austin for the film festival. He went to a panel she was at and said she's pretty much as weird in person as in her movies...freaky.

And now, I must get to my Pentavirate meeting (I replaced Colonel you see).

We have a piper dooown...a piper is doown; it's all right, he's just pissed.

I'm with Taylor, that Eeyore has an absorbed twin.

The "Epcot" thing slays me. I never understood why people feel the need to dogpile like that in comment threads - I mean even if they were right, don't they think the first gagillion comments would have tipped you off? I'm another Epcot is my favorite person, especially SSE - I love the fake charred wood smell in the burning of Rome scene :)

It may be helpful to clarify a little, for those who haven't visited Epcot. Spaceship Earth is a ride *inside* the big silver ball that is Epcot's center most famous landmark.

I missed the Spaceship Earth/Epcot post from a year ago but let me say two things: 1.) you are correct. The ride housed in the dome is Spaceship Earth. 2.) I think Bucky would be pleased with the cake homage.

What?! While everyone is going head over heels over the engorged (or fetal/impregnated?) Eeyore, I am more interested in the fact that YOU both made the Spaceship Earth Cake! :D How awesome; a cake on your site finally made by you! And it rocks; ironic how it became a legend (next to carrot jockeys, of course).

Also, don't worry about being a Disney geek. If you live in Orlando for too long, you are, by nature, forced to be an obligatory Disney geek, and I think you *also* earn the official right to make fun of tourists getting lost/over-spending/acting geeky, although I'm still waiting for my certificate to arrive on that... :)

Maniah said...

That isnt Piglet.. Thats Eyeore.

I remember last year's post. I'm a Disney Geek too and while I don't cringe *every* time someone pops off with incorrect Disney fact, I thought at the very least people knew that the "gray/silver, golf ball sphere thingy" was a ride and not the park itself.

The other cringe-worthy misconception that I hear on occasion is that "Disney World" is a park. For some reason, people think the Magic Kingdom is called Disney World. Weird. ;)

how DID you do that?

Cat said...

Spaceship Earth! Yay! I wants it!!

It makes me laugh that people see it and yell EPCOT. Do they even know what EPCOT stands for? Or what it even was supposed to be? (FYI huge disney geekery coming..)

EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. It was actually supposed to be a self contained CITY that Walt wanted to built. (you can find a ton more info here.

Also, I gotta love the Axe Murderer and Hitchhiker's Guide references on poor Eyelembo (I've decided to take the joining of Eeyore and Piglets names and add in their third, Dumbo, as someone suggested).

I just read every post on last years Epcot fiasco and found it painfully funny.

Can we summarize all bajillion posts briefly here:

2000 people want you to know that the cake is actually EPCOT Centre not Spaceship Earth

2000 people want to correct the first 2000 by saying that the "golf ball" is called Spaceship Earth and is located in EPCOT Centre

and all 2137 of the Dis-Heads (like myself) want everyone to know everything about Disney and to refer to everything in only the proper terms such as:

It's one of the Disney parks and is called Epcot, not EPCOT or Epcot Center. The former meaning (experimental proto-blah blah blah) isn't used or hasn't been referred to in over 15 years....and other "i know more than you do about Disney" type stuff

Jen knows her Disney stuff so don't bother to correct her. For all the Disney nuts on here just remember...someone always knows more about Disney than you do so politely inform people without sounding too pious...especially since some of the people correcting have then later been corrected by someone else.

It's making my eyeballs ache

btw, I think you did a great job on the SSE cake

You get what I mean. Such a tiny little thing, the comma--but a big annoyance, to some!

I'm with you on this one. My older kids grew up with some Disney Pooh, in the way of stuffed animals & such, but they also got a lot of the REAL stuff, which I got from my Mom. She met my Dad when they were both in the Navy, and she got HIM into all of it, over time. Classic.
