This week, we're going to broaden your horizons with something so geeky that even I know nothing about it: World of Warcraft. Apparently, this is a "game" where "players" spend untold thousands of hours walking around and killing things and otherwise forfeiting what was left of their "lives." To do this, I asked Jen's brother Ben, who is himself a recovering WoW addict, to help decipher these cakes. So let's get started, shall we?
And here's another angle:
"Gold farming" is a term loosely defined as selling imaginary money for real money. Kind of like the stock market, only dominated by Chinese corporations. (Okay, exactly like the stock market.)
And finally, we have a cake based on one of the most popular places in the game, the bank in Ogrimmar, the capital city of the Horde.
For reference, here's a screen shot of the building in the game:
On a side note, see those itty bitty game people with the colorful words over their heads? Those are your IT guys, your Microsoft employees, and your computer repair people. In short, the folks who keep the internets running and, thusly, control the world. So be nice to them, or someday, when you least expect it, you just might find yourself barred from Facebook. And then what will you do? Call somebody?
A big thanks to Ben, logger of untold hours in Horde-y land, for finally putting all that knowledge to good use.
(Just kidding, Ben! We all know nothing good comes from the Horde.)

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 239 of 239 Newer› Newest»I came to post a protest about the Horde being labeled as the "bad guys", only to find that dozens of people already have! Hilarious!
Seriously, they aren't. :D
"As far as all of Alliance being children and "noobs," maybe it tells you something about the Horde that the Alliance side isn't doing the name calling. :)"
It wasn't the Alliance that got called out on the front page of this site.
I have to agree with what Clandahlina said.
To build on to it though, I am really dissapointed that someone who knows about an uber geek con that attracts 10s of thousands of people, is completely ignorant of the biggest MMORPG in the world currently standing at 11.5 million players. That just seems extremely odd that a self professed geek who goes to Dragoncon (where they have WoW sessions) has no clue about it at all.
Furthermore you just went and labeled everyone who plays a computer geek, with out bothering to find out much about it other than what a few of your biased friends had to say.
I hate to tell you this but 30-50% of the people (depending on circumstance) I play with aren't geeks. They are as other people said doctors, lawyers, house moms, house husbands, kids, etc...
If I had a dime for every time I had to help fellow non-tech savy players with computer issues, I wouldn't need to work a full time job.
So please next time when you make a sweeping generalization about 11.5 million people, do some research first before you attempt to be the pot calling the kettle black.
And to another reader - the people with the yellow ! over their heads at Dragoncon weren't just costumes, but rather they were quest givers for real quests that you would earn XP for, and then turn in at the big WoW party for prizes if you were high enough. It's really cool to see that sort of thing go on.
FOR THE ALLIANCE!!!

I wish I'd known you were at DragonCon! We were too, hope you had as much fun as we did.
Also, as a fellow WoW addict, these cakes are absolutely phenomenal.
WoW those are some pretty amazing cakes!
nice cakes!
Have to comment though, the Horde are not "bad guys" (though the leader of the Alliance doesn't like to believe it). The Horde and the Alliance are just two opposing factions.
Woot! For the Horde =)
haha the horde are the noobs, ALLIANCE FTW!!!!!(for the win) really though awesome cakes, great job to the people who created them, though as previously stated, the alliance is far superior to the horde
I would just like to say a little something considering I'm one of the 'noob' alliance WoW addicts (haha) The box cake with the horde flag looks like it might be something that was Hellfire Ramparts inspired (ask your brother to explain what Ramps is :)). WoW isn't too terrible, I suggest you two try it...
Love Ms. Mysti
Addicting my friends to WoW since 2006
Love WOW - now we need GuildWars sunday sweets!!!!
Im a new comer to WoW but getting quickly addicted... im not a geek i still go to work everyday and support my family but its nice to come home and unwind with a game when you can kill people and get away with it ;)
Spicy, on what to do when you hit max level, its called Raiding and it is a big, wonderful time sucker. Oh and achievements. Though I am sure others may say PVP (player vs Player - where you kill other players rather than generated content).
Gold Farming actually refers to what you do to get the gold that Farmers will eventually sell for cash. Such as spamming chat, or hacking accounts. Also, alliance are not the "good guys" and horde are not the "bad guys." It's just two factions. Horde just happen to have more creepy guys playing for them. Not all undead are evil. That's racist. Or classist. Or something.
Those people with the colorful words are also your soldiers, your policemen, lawyers, nurses, doctors, celebrities, musicians, family, politicians, and everything in between. WoW brings people together that you would never guess would play.
Love the cakes, especially the Org bank which I gather by now you know you spelled wrong. For the record, I rolled a horde first, than an ally and play both depending upon my vibe. That said the argument about what type of person plays which side will continue forever. Horde aren't the bad guys--just misunderstood. :-p
Guys, lay off Jen! I enjoy the cakes and the commentary, even if it's not "accurate enough" for most of you. ;p
That being said, my younger brothers (who have played WoW much longer than I have) thought for the longest time that the city was called "Ogremeyer" because of how their friend butchered the pronunciation. xD
Um. Don't bean to be a party pooper, but as a previous addict of wow, now reformed, the Horde aren't necessarily the "bad guys" and the alliance aren't the "good guys" thats a common misconception. Its the impression blizzard gave the factions because blizzard favored Alliance and they wanted more people to choose those characters. Awesome cakes though :)
Now my husband will be making requests of WoW themed cakes.
--Widow of WoW
These will be thrilling to my boyfriend. :) Although, he will most likely point out that a real gamer *always* plays on a PC. XD
Excellent cakes!
I'm recovering from Dragon*Con myself. Hope you guys had fun! This year was by far one of the best. :)
Just wanted to let you know that the Horde cake with the shield submitted by Tess was not in fact made by Jason. His claim to have made this cake is false. I am the real maker of this cake. Please go here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/34709834/m/755002463831 to see the original post in 2001 put up by my friend who took the pictures. Please remove the credit to this Jason person. If you need more proof I can produce original pictures. I can also have any number of people attest to the fact that I made it since many of them watched me take the countless hours to construct it...as an amateur home baker, not a professional. I think that the site is wonderful and I check it out pretty often. Nice job on putting thw WOW theme cake edition together. You did miss one that was done shortly after mine. I have to say, WoW is the reason I'm now re-married! (I met my hubby through our Guild) These are some fantastic pieces of art, seems a shame to eat them!
Thanks for sharing these! =)
Eli (aka Coralin, Night Elf Hunter, Kinship of Fate, Crushridge, Ret.)
sorry to tell you, but horde are the good guys, l2lore noob
As Renee said, the Horde is not evil. They're just trying to survie, just like the Alliance. Ok, I'm done.
First of all, for the Alliance! :)
Fabulous cakes! My favorite is the Orgrimmar bank, even though hubby and I are both Alliance. In fact, we also met IN GAME! He is from Australia, and I am from the US. We had a long distance romance and are now settled in California.
We did not have a WoW-themed wedding but we did include touches of Azeroth during the reception. Hubby framed a sketch I had done of our characters for the gift table, and the guest tables were labeled with names of lands from the game instead of numbers. I included a short description of each area on the back of the table markers. The head table was Winterspring because that was where we had our first "in-game date". :)
Thanks for the pics! I'm posting a link in our guild forum. :P
Yes!! I love it when the geeky cakes get featured. It just makes me feel so much better that I actually know what you're talking about. (Though I don't play WoW.)
:)
Wonderful cakes, but I must protest that there are not enough of the Alliance represented.
Not everyone in the Alliance are nOObs or kids. I'm 32, female and proudly play a Night Elf Druid named Gadieler on a private server (yes, I play a male toon).
I chose to play Alliance because I wanted to play an Elf and Belves (Butt Elves) are too...delicate for me.
The Mac Cake = FAIL. No real computer geek would be caught dead using a Mac. Hilarious collection though.
No, no, not all Alliance people are Noobs etc. LOL. Some of us are nice, mature people who simply play where our friends play, and for me, that happens to be the Alliance side. However, these cakes are many kinds of awesome. Perhaps I'll have to make my own Alliance yumminess to balance things out.
And WOW the pickiness of the spelling. LOL. Horde vs Alliance has always come out sounding like Good vs Evil to me. I DO have my share of Horde characters tho.
Great cakes, and great posts. Thanks for sharing those!
OMNOMNOMNOM!!!
In before anyone else by the looks of things, haha XD
I know someone who's going to get a real kick out that "Shaman For Dummies" part of the cake. Epic awesome!
Also, new layout is new epic layout =3
On a side note, see those itty bitty game people with the colorful words over their heads? Those are your IT guys, your Microsoft employees, and your computer repair people. In short, the folks who keep the internets running and, thusly, control the world.
I totally resent this! I'm a pretty hardcore WoW player, but I'm a BFA student, a very hard-working one at that! The people who get addicted to this game have something wrong with them in the first place. :(
For the Horde!
Woot. Level 64.5 Undead (Horde!) Shadow Priest here (Profession: Geek). Wants a WoW cake for her 45th birthday!
I came here to say what Jennifer post #3 said: "Orgrimmar" not "Ogrimmar". And pronounced phonetically, too.
I go through WoW phases. Right now I have my account on canceled mode from our recent budget crackdown while we were in bankruptcy.
Ahh...but how I miss flambeing things with my pyro mage. And the cute noises my gnome warrior makes when she squishes ogres XD
omg. I actually recognized the bank at Orgrimmar cake without reading the captions first. I can't tell if that's a good or bad thing.
I think I just had a geekgasm. I have to get one of those horde crest cakes someday. But the level of detail on the tauren shaman there was plainly incredible! Every single hut, very accurate.
Just a note, Alliance and Horde both constitute "noobs", but Horde are defined loosely as people that "think" they're all dark and evil, but actually are whiny.
Beautiful cakes though! I'd prefer more Allies, but still wonderful art!
Just found your website from an article on yahoo and I have to say I love it , so I showed it to my mom and we both cracked up. The W.O.W cakes are really fantastic . Which just leaves me to say " FOR THE HORDE !!!" =)
Keep up the fun , Jessica :)
Undead Mage Champion of Undercity !
@Spicy the addicts are (mostly) those who pay for their gaming experience. tbh, i've tried free (also notably... illegal) WoW servers, and ur right... it gets boring fast. that's cause there's no challenge in it. as for the endgame content, again, only really any good if you play the paid servers... so when talking about WoW addiction, try not comparing apples to oranges.
anywho, great looking cakes... i'd love to see them at any of my birthday celebrations... at any celebration really lol
