Sunday Sweets: Off-the-Shelf Cuteness
Sunday, December 7, 2008
Stephanie S. found these in Hong Kong (aka the Capital of Cuteness):
Needless to say, I'm in love with these designs. The little dino totally reminds me of the "Rawr" shirt over on Shana Logic:
And here are some Sweets from the States (I think):
Adam R. found these on Manako's Flickr stream. Hey, I guess it IS possible to make Wreck-less doggy cakes!
And you guys are probably going to judge me for this, but I think these things Monique R. found are adorable:
Even if I can't say exactly what they're supposed to be. Um, maybe owls? Wingless, marshmallow-shaped, fuzzy lil' owls?
I'm thinking of starting something new with Sunday Sweets: weekly assignments. I'd give y'all a theme - Broadway, video games, animals, etc. - and then you send in nominations for me to feature. The submissions can be your own work or from your favorite bakery. What do you think - sound like fun? Let me know in the comments, along with any suggestions you have for themes beyond your average wedding/birthday/shower fare. Thanks, guys!

What's a Wreck?
What's a Wreck?
A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.
Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Where's the book?
We don’t have any copies of Cake Wrecks for sale here, autographed or otherwise. We decided the shipping and handling costs would be too high to make it worth your while. So instead, buy your copies locally or online and then order personalized bookplates: it’s cheaper, easier, and I think even looks a bit nicer.

Dino! I love it!
Cuteness.
Those little fuzzy things are verra cute! They remind me of that little chicken in the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons, all they need are big round glasses!
April
I love the Hong Kong cakes they are so perfect. The doggies are cute but that is one heck of a lot of icing still. And I have to agree that those little marshmallowy chicks/owls are adorable!
I think the fuzzy white cubes are chicks, Jen.
Love love love the idea of weekly assignments. That could really be a lot of fun. Thanks, you always keep me laughing and smiling.
oh lord those are so cute :(
especially the doggy ones.. my mouth's watering just from looking at them.
The marshmallowly wingless things are adorable! Simple, yet cutely effective!
I don't know what is better, the cakes or the translated names of the cakes. Who can top "Dim Sum in Cage"?
Dana
I'm getting a Furby kind of vibe from those last little guys. Or maybe they're chickens. They are cute in a mystifying kind of way, though.
I like the owl-cakey things. And the idea of a theme sounds great!
Cute, cute, cute...
What's the dim sum in cage? sounds yucky
I kind of thought the marshmallow guys were supposed to be chicks, but I can totally see owl, too. Either way, cute!
I love the dim sum guys, but I think one's already been taken. Notice the empty disk. My impression of the meaning of the title is it's sort of a play on words. They are arranged like dumplings in a steamer basket, but they are sort of "pre-dumplings"...it's a little morbid. Yet strangely cute.
I LOVE the owls. So adorable.
I love your idea, it's like the anti-caption contest! We send you the pic, you give us the caption.
I don't know what those things are in the last picture, but you are right, they are cute.
Those owls are a hoot!
The doggy cakes are very cute, but who gets to eat the a$$?
Something about cutting into those cute little puppies just doesn't sit well with me.
since everything unknown can be identified as a Dr. Who species... I think the bottom 'wingless owls' look quite like an Adipose from the recent episode 'Partners in Crime'.
Those "owl cakes" reminded me a lot of the Adipose aliens in the Doctor Who episode "Partners in Crime". Check out the picture on the wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partners_in_Crime_(Doctor_Who)
i think the dim sum in cage was for a cake on the other side out of the picture maybe? i noticed the sign next to the dino/cute godzilla that said Night Owl, which i'm guessing is for the picture above.
and i too love the little marshmallow coconut fluff avian thingies, but is it just me or does the one on the bottom right in the middle look really REALLY p***ed off?? he's all "you think you're eating me? i'm gonna peck you in the face, punk..."
Awww I love those owlets. Too cute to eat! @ _@
I think themed contests are a great idea for Sunday Sweets. I might enter myself, even though they'll probably end up as wrecks since I'm no baker!
I'm all for themes! I love to go searching for wrecks...good or bad. God knows I've made a few of my own!
Love the Dino!!!
Maybe those marshmallow thingys are supposed to be that chicken from the pretty recent chicken little movie, but they don't have glasses, so I don't know. They are cute, though!
You can give us assignments, but I NEVER see any cake wrecks, no matter how hard I look, and I look each time I'm in the store...oh, well.
Another bonus on the dino cake: it demonstrates how to represent earth without making it look like poo. That is definitely a mountain.
Anne
I am a little surprised those doggies aren't considered wrecks by you. With the metric ton of frosting and the arses up in the air like they're blowing some gas.
Angie (from over at www.HalfAssedKitchen.com)
Those are so cute! LOVE them all!
I love the idea of a weekly assignment.
Video games sounds like a good one, or try and find great holiday themed cakes...I find it hard to find a really creative christmas cake :)
Those last ones look like the Adipose from Doctor Who.
The look like Furbies. Remember those?
Oh, and I like the idea, but I was thinking that maybe you should have a weekly feature of good non-bought items. You know, things that peopple had made at home that are almost good enough to be made by a professional?
The ones at the end... Furbies? Any one remember Furbies?
Sounds like fun. Im thinking, "When movies meet cake." You know, famous scenes from movies, characters and stuff like that.
i so love the little chicks. Thats my guess at what they are. The one in the middle does look a little upset. I love the little dino he rocks. lol Keep up the wreckastic work.
These are adorable :) The shirt on Shana Logic is a Kid Pirate design, and she also specializes in cute things ( http://www.kidpirate.com/shop/ )
The last one reminds me of the Adipose (fat babies) from this past season of Dr. Who--well, except the cakes seem to have legs.
Cute indeed!
Although, I must disagree with you on the capital of cuteness. That would be Tokyo. ;)
The yellow things on the head make those last ones look kind of like cockatoos to me... cute!
I agree with "Trinite Ducalon" that they look like the little chicken in Foghorn Leghorn cartoons w/o the glasses.
I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy some and attach little glasses made from Twizzler Pull-n-peels.
The little chick things are cute... but stacked up in boxes like that, makes me think they're waiting at the processing plant to be ermmm.... processed.
OMG! I love the little fluffy owls - too cute!
Heck yes! Theme away!
Those owls are cuteness personified!! As for the two little doggies--I have a Shih Tzu puppy who looks like one of them.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/3058890226_6de644050e.jpg
I agree with Sarah - the baby "owls" sort of remind me of the Adipose critters from Dr. Who too. And the Chinese cakes? Cuteness perfection.
Ummm... That bottom one is looking at me. It looks Evil. I'm afraid. - - However, I think they look amazingly cool.
I think the little white creatures in the last picture are supposed to be chicks; they look suspiciously like "Chicken Little" in that animated movie of a few years ago. They even have the little top feathers that Chicken Little had.
Too cute!
The owls or chicks are way too cute. Thanks for sharing!
khee so cute. Nice hooters c:
Did no one notice the prices?? Little Dino costs $338! Rawr indeed!!
Sarah-I'm with you those last ones look exactly like the adipose! Adorable for certain.
They look like battery chicks in cages!! Guilt free battery chicks...
I thought owls at first, too, and I think they're cute!
I also love your idea of weekly submission themes. :) I'll be thinking of theme ideas.
I LOVE the owls! And I got to celebrate one of my birthdays in Japan, and had a very cute cake (not as cute as those, but cute!) -- will have to dig up a picture......
yeah, but aren't owls supposed to have very large eyes? I'm just sayin...
I LOVE the chicks!
You know those puppy dogs are wrecks, though. Especially the one with a purple stripe airbrushed down its back.
I'm sorry Sarah, but I totally do judge you. The chicks/marshmallows/fat cells in the last photo are so not cute. ;)
The weekly assignment idea is fantastic! Looking forward to it!!
You need to have a Star Wars theme day :)
Like stonesoupjewelry, the first thing I thought of when I saw the little white "owls" was Furby!
And the dragon is just adorable!
Helllloooooo... fire breathing dino? Me thinks it'a a dragon. Duh.
The amount is in Hong Kong dollars. $338 HKD is about $44 USD.
My immediate thought on the last ones was that they were Adipose, too - especially because there are so many of them!
And those puppy cakes were wrecks for me, as well...
oh the last one is a cakey ode to the sad state of battery chicken farming.
poor things, someone free them! they don't even have any wings they look like they cant even stand up, oh the humanity! could you eat that?
The owl things are cute...but...um...what are they? cupcakes? coconut covered giant marshmellows?
But I love the theme idea...the wreckporters are ready for assignment! Famous Master's replicas (Van gogh, Degas, etc), movies...I like the idea of amateur cake designers.
~Bonnie B~
Love your new idea, I'm looking forward to it already. Hopefully there will be some cupcakes featured on Sunday!
The owl puffs are cute, but why so many? There must be dozens - a flock!
um...those dogs are wrecks, not sweets! not as wrecky as the ones before, but still, wrecky.
I agree with those who suggested furbys as a possibility for the last bunch of... cakes? cupcakes? giant fuzzy marshmallows?
I love the idea of a contest. I think you should have a catagory for people to "clean up" wrecks. Like when you have a faint idea of what the decorator was going for, we could find or make a cake that actually looks good. Obviously this wouldn't work with some cakes, but I know someone can make a decent looking monkey cake, NOT CCC, there have been a few monkey wrecks lately.
I want to adopt one of the fuzzy owl-like creatures!
The last one reminds me of the Adipose fat creatures from Doctor Who.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adipose_(Doctor_Who)#Adipose
Too cute:0) I love the pics form Hong Kong. Is that fondant they are using. They decorated those cupcakes very cute even with the coconut they are cute.
The fuzzy guys remind me of Furbies, those talking bird/gremlin toys. Very cute
Careful...those last ones might call their "peeps" in for backup.
Those fuzzy white things kind of look like baby eagles. And if they had glasses they would indeed look like the little chicken hawk on Looney Toons. It's a good thing I can eat things with a face!!
word verification: fluteout.
I think those little fuzzy things are Furby Cakes!
re: lil square birds
I'm SO judging you.
ohhh, those cakes are so pretty !!!!
It looks like those things on a recent episode of Doctor Who I saw, the first i ever watched. how odd. But the Adipose episode with these exact little things. FREAKIN WEIRD>-Jessie
I think the Hong Kong ones are ice-cream cake. hopefully the dino is made of ice-cream rather than total icing :S
I love the first ones so much. They are adorable!!!!
Perhaps I'm reading itworng, but did anyone else notice the Hong Kong cakes were mislabled? That's one for Engrish.org.
Dim sum cute cakes.
I love this blog more than, well, more than MY blog :o)
Kim
Sooooo adorable--I love them. The first two don't even look real--they almost look decorated on a box b/c they are perfect.
Sooo cute!! I know what those coconut blobs of cute are - it's so obvious they're ADIPOSE!
Oh sweet, fuzzy, marshmallow owl! Hop, hop right into my mouth! This is where you belong!
Wow, there are a lot of Dr Who fans here. But is the pic from Australia? They undoubtedly look like cocktoos to me too.
FYI-The dog pic is defintely from the states. Ralph's is a California (or maybe West Coast) grocery store chain. And they make some Wreck-tastic cakes. But some okay/good ones. Blog to your CA readers to get you some pics from there (Ralph's)!
PS-I'm a new reader, and I loveeee your blog!
I love the weekly assignment idea.
hOw about endangerd species week. Or even better PANDA WEEK!
That "Dino" is totally the oldskool Dig Dug dragon!!!
nice pictures
i love the idea of themed submissions! i hereby suggest sciencey themes, a.k.a. "geek cakes", ones that you'd be hard-pressed to get a professional decorator to do (seems appropriate)....
OMG I WANT THE OWL CAKE!!!
Also, I'm with you on the fuzzy owl/chick things at the end - too cute!
sorry, i'm not feeling the doggies. but i LOVE the coconut owls! and the hong kong cakes are effing adorable.
Yes to the Sunday Sweets theme assignments! Please give me an excuse to bake and decorate a random cake!
Amber
I want to know where to find those little white owls! My son would freak if I brought those home. Snow Owls as cake - he would love them!
Ok- I agree the owl things are adorable when you think they are owls- but what if they are actually snowman heads???
"Here little Janie, have Frosty's head to eat......."
I think weekly assignments it perfect! I just bought a cute little camera and a big huge purse...I totally plan on carrying around a camera just in the hopes I see something cake-a-licious....or wrecktastic...
The little owly things are adorable, and yet also intimidating... it looks like they're poised to attack as soon as the lid comes off...
the dogs? really? o.O
Awww, I loved the little owls. And the first cake in the post with the piggy was cute.
My four-year-old said, "Are those... um... coconut chickens?"
I really love the cakes from Hong Kong! I wish they sold stuff that cute here in the States.
nonono, the last ones are the Adipose from the first episode of the new season of Dr Who!!! Thats where they're hiding!!!
That night owl cake is one of the cutest things I have ever seen. Instantly saved so I can try to copy it at some point in time
That Dino is friggin adorable.
I like the idea of you sending out wreckporters in mass. But I also love the Sunday Sweets because the cakes are gorgeous. So if you did decide to do the theme thing, it would be nice to feature it on a different day.
Wild Wednesdays
Themed Thursdays
Scavenger Saturdays
so on and so forth
Don't know if you know this or not, but Dim Sum are dumplings served in Hong Kong. They're sorta unique to that region, as I understand it. And, yes, it's quite likely that they're made of the cute critters that you see on that bamboo steamer (that would be the "cake" to you).
Cute? Sure. Dinner? Oh, yes.
I was looking over your Cake Wrecks blog and now I'm compelled to comment.
The cuteness cakes have me spellbound! They're so cute, adorable, and make me want to buy and dispense them right out of the monitor. Ha ha. They're so cute, I'd have trouble eating them.
The owl ones look a lot like newborn owlets. When they're born and cleaned up, they look like that. Its because their over-feathers aren't bloomed out yet. Just their under-feathers, so the wings actually look "missing". They look so lovable and they're typically tame before teenhood. I can imagine what the order was...
"I'd like to order baby owls in their bloomers, please."
It reminds me of the Adipose creatures in one of the episodes of Doctor Who.
http://www.leytonjay.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/more_adipose.jpg
That's what they look like.
They are 'Marshmallow Peeps"!
Deb Dennis
looks like cubes of tofu/chickens
haha, they're Vegan Chicks
I think the little dino looks like one of the characters from Dig Dug!!
So cute! Hong Kong really has adorable cakes. The photographer was fortunate. We tried taking some pictures of cakes at a bakery in the Tsim Tsa Tsui Underground and the bakers/attendants chased us away.
The 'owls' look like white weewoos from Neopets.com
http://images.neopets.com/nt/ntimages/350_weewoo_white.gif
