The Wrecky Infamy is Spreading

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Here's a report sent in from the front lines by brave Wreckporter Mrs. Tantrum:

"I wanted to let you know that I attempted this morning to discreetly take a photo of a spider cupcake wreck at my local [name removed to prevent possible lynching] store with my phone. Apparently the bakery manager and store manager are on to the Cake Wreck Blog, because I was shouted at by both of them "NO PHOTOGRAPHING OF THE CAKES!" I told them I was sending the photo to my husband to see if it was the one he wanted for the party today, they replied "No you aren't, you're going to send it to that cake wreck blog like everyone else."

YES!! The power! The absolute power! The universe is mine to command, to CONTROOOL!!

[picking self off floor] Whoops - sorry 'bout that, Mrs. Tantrum; just took a little power trip there.

SO... anybody else get the spider-wreck photo? :)

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Awww . . . that means they know they suck :(

But goody for you!

Anonymous said...

"No you aren't, you're going to send it to that cake wreck blog like everyone else."

wouldnt this be telling you something as a baker? to me it would be quite the hint to get some more decorating staff.

Donna said...

So they know it's a wreck, but put it in the window anyway? Is that a "any publicity is good publicity" kind of dealio?

Congrats on your notoriety!

Anonymous said...

LMBO!!! Maybe they should make cakes they KNOW are ugly!! Hmmm... what a concept.

Anonymous said...

You have arrived!! I'm just waiting for a guest appearance on Ace of Cakes next. You are like the QUEEN!

mrsmac said...

so if they know a bunch of people are trying to submit their cake to the cake WRECK blog, why is the cake still on display????

weird!

Sarah Rosales said...

That is absolutely hilarious!!

Carista said...

That's absolutely awesome!

Melanie said...

What I like most about this story is that the shop people appear to be aware that the cake in their window is wrecktastic. But their solution to that problem is not, say, replacing it with a nicer cake. Rather, they just hope that nobody manages to surreptitiously photograph it and send it here. Brilliant!

Kate said...

Please say that that didn't really happen. You mean they knew the cake sucked so badly people were coming from miles around to see this herrendous cake and they still left it out? OK Now the mission if you choose to accept it. GET THAT PIC!!!

Little Fish said...

That is freaking hysterical!

Anonymous said...

You'd think if more then one person was taking pictures and you KNEW they were going to Wrecks then MAYBE you should REMOVE THE SPIDER CAKES!

Blackbeard said...

Erm. If they know their cake is a wreck, why don't they take it off display? Like everyday average Joe Plumbers don't know a piece of crap cake when they see it?

Anonymous said...

I'm off to check my local bakery...

Jen said...

Well, if their cakes are THAT bad and they're onto the fact that they are Wrecks, WHY ARE THEY STILL MAKING HORRIBLE CAKES?? Take a class or two, admit defeat!!

Anonymous said...

*snickers*

That aladdin reference was the icing on this cake(wreck) blog. :)

The Imaginary Reviewer said...

Wait, so they knew this cake was Cake Wrecks-worthy, yet they still put it on display? That's just asking for trouble!

Anonymous said...

If they know it's a wreck, why do they still have it on display? You'd think they'd just remove it.

Anonymous said...

I would've told them to make better looking cakes, then they wouldn't have to worry about it. If your cakes are ugly they deserve to be posted here.

Janell said...

Their cakes must be really wrecktastic if everyone else tries to get pictures of them too. Now I really want to see it.

Mindy said...

Geez! If they both knew it was bad, why didn't they remove it from public view? That doesn't sound like good marketing to me.

Anonymous said...

AWESOME! So funny that they knew the cake was bad enough to be WRECKED but left it out to sell anyway.

Tooooooooooooo FUNNY!

Unknown said...

That's awesome. If I brave the rain today to go to Kroger, I must remember my camera as there is a cake there that is awful. Must remember!

Brandi said...

LOL. That is so the win. Crappy cake decorators live in fear of you.

But remember.. with great power comes great responsibility... :P

Michelle said...

Those bakery people are sort of missing the point, don'cha think? Perhaps they should worry less about photos and more about making non-wrecks.

Momma J said...

That is awesome! You'd think they'd have fixed the problem if others had already tried to take pictures!

The other day, I saw my husband taking pictures of some cakes at our local grocery store. I don't know if he sent them to you, but that was the first thing that came to my mind while he was doing it. Luckily, the bakers either didn't notice or don't know of your blog yet, or both. ;)
Oh, and in response to the other day's blog, I've been wondering which of my cake wrecks to send to you.

Anonymous said...

That's awesome. Now I'm wondering what other cakes they have "featured" on the site!

YOU HAVE ARRIVED!!!!!

I see people need some practice taking sneaky pictures. Always pretend you are texting, you'd be amazed at how many people fall for that. ;)

Sleepwalker said...

Makes me wish I had a camera phone. I soooo wanted to snap a pic of a 'Godzilla' CCC in a mega mart for you last weekend. Alas, no camera. I had to be content to share a covert laugh with my husband at the green horror. Without Cake Wrecks, I never would have noticed it before.

Apparently this particular bakery has been stung before. Instead of getting pissy, maybe they ought to take the hint!

Laura ~Peach~ said...

I HOPE SOMEONE GOT A PIC OF IT ! lol

My wife took a photo of a cake at the grocery store the other day (because it was a wreck, of course) and I was worried that this was exactly what would happen if they saw us. I guess my fears were more right than I knew.

Anonymous said...

So, you were Jafar all along. I knew it!

This is AWESOME!

You might want to let your photographers know that it is in their rights to take photographs in public locations!

READ THIS:
http://photojojo.com/content/tips/legal-rights-of-photographers/

And possibly, carry copies of this!
http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm

I once saw an employee at an FYE store claim that photography was not allowed in the store, and I REALLY wished I had a copy of this in my bag.

Laura said...

Ahhh, this is exactly the kind of thing that would happen to me if I tried to take a sneaky photograph! Hmmm... I should rush to the shops right now ^.^

That's so ridiculous. It's kind of like saying 'don't talk about our cakes, you might say they're BAD!' Everyone has the right to tell others if they found something silly like that if it's in public.

...Anyway, I can think of no better person to RULE THE WORLD than cake wrecks! It is sure to be full of awesome.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn have bought the cake just to get the picture!!!! Congratulations you have arrived.

Anonymous said...

Take one for the team, guys! How much was the damn cake? BUY IT!

Yarnhog said...

I'm DYING to see what a spider wreck looks like. I hope someone got a picture.

Because of this site I go around from store to store looking for a cake wreck!

Anonymous said...

What an incentive to go grocery shopping now!!!! We have a local stop n shop with these awful cookie monster head gagging on a cookie cupcakes.

Anonymous said...

This is SO funny! And sad, that they know it's a wreck and haven't hidden it away at least!

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, supermarkets are not public spaces. They are private spaces that are open to a wide section of the public.

Notice how supermarkets can refuse service to anyone, and *they* ultimately get to decide when they're open and when they aren't, within the limits of the law?

They just seem *like* public spaces.

Lynn said...

I had wondered if anybody else caught the Aladdin quote -- high five, Emily!

Thinposter said...

Not to get all overly serious about this, but I don't think it's legal for the bakery owner to prohibit someone from taking photos of their cake that is on display in a public area. Unless they want to argue that it's a violation of their intellectual property rights, which seems kind of ridiculous.

This is making me want to go to the grocery store right now and search for wrecks! I always kind of hurry past the bakery section because I have a three year old and the last thing I need is a three year old screaming for a wrecky cupcake, but he is at preschool right now, so I could run out and see if there are any wrecks at my store right now...I always have my digital camera in my purse for just such an occasion...I'm dying to see the spider wreck!

Chewbob said...

THAT IS AMAZING.

(And I, too, caught the Aladdin reference. :)

ksaldria said...

I wanna see this cupcake that these people fought so hard to protect.

Rose said...

Wouldn't you think that anyone who was so aware of Cake Wrecks would ponder the possibility that their wreck would wind up on there? Why make a wreck-tastic cake if it wasn't for the purpose that you want it to be on Cake Wrecks? You can't blame the photographer for that wreck, you should step up and submit it yourself! Or you should stop making wreck-worthy cakes!

Ghost Rider said...

LOL This is awesome and I'm really curious about the wreaktastic spider cake now! I hope someone manages to catch a picture.

Leslie said...

That is beyond awesome!!

But then, if they know their baked goods are wreck-worthy shouldn't the bakers take a little more time to make better cakes/cupcakes? If they took the time it takes to yell at customers and used it to learn how to decorate, they might make more money....and encourage more customers!!

Marissa said...

THAT ROCKS and is equally hilarious! If you don't want your cakes to appear on Cake Wrecks, don't make sucky cakes! (that c-section cake from yesterday i actually liked and would have laughed so hard had i been the receiver of it).

I found your site after my husband saw a blurb about it in our local newspaper. He knew I'd love it and I do!!

Anonymous said...

LOL That's fantastic!! I would have snapped a pic anyway and stuck my tongue out at them....and then asked them bluntly "If you KNOW it's Wreck-worthy, then why do you still have it displayed?!?"

But that's just me.

Kate said...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

That just made my day.

Why did they even have it out if they immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was being sent to this blog?

Unknown said...

hahahaha awesome. The best part = "you're going to put it on the cake wreck LIKE EVERYONE ELSE" HA! Poor wrecky cake decorators. I must see this spider cake.

CakeEater said...

I saw a cake the other day at the grocery store I SO wanted to take a picture of, but didn't have my camera. They piped a long two headed y shape, and then shoved those clown pick heads in them. There was several of these on one cake, in all different colors. No hands. No feet. Just "clowns" sprawled out on their stomachs.

Kopperhead said...

I would have so bought that cake, whether I wanted/needed it or not!

I always forget there is a camera on my phone when I am browsing the bakery at the big box store.

My hubby went to store early this morning and brought home Halloween cupcakes. He comes in singing "I've got sprinkles, I've got sprinkles." and emphasizing he didn't bring home a Wreck!

Anonymous said...

That is PRICELESS!

I think that is HILARIOUS! Enough to make me start sportin' my DSLR around my neck more often again..even to the grocery store. And dare them to tell me 'no pictures' .. hey, I don't see a sign, there's no law...arrest me, go ahead :p

Susie said...

Ummm...the Krages document wouldn't exactly support the photographer in this instance:

"Property owners MAY LEGALLY PROHIBIT PHOTOGRAPHY on their premises but have no right to prohibit others from photographing their property
from other locations....In most places, you may reasonably
assume that taking photographs
is allowed and that you do not
need explicit permission....In any case, WHEN A PROPERTY OWNER TELLS YOU NOT TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS WHILE ON THE PREMISES, YOU ARE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO HONOR THE REQUEST.

As soon as the words were out of my mouth I see the kind lady look from over the counter and say, "You guys can't put this on CAKEWRECKS, you hear!?" Haha!

You are completely within your rights to take a photograph within a store as long as the item is not copyrighted (like artwork) or a person, especially for personal use. Once a store owner puts anything on display, you are free to take pictures if you desire; there is no difference between seeing something and seeing something in the lens of the camera.

Not to mention that it is a really bad way to treat a customer.

There are just so many things wrong with that person's experience. Like so many before said, if you KNOW there's a Cake Wrecks blog, and you KNOW your cakes suck, get some instruction or hire new staff that do good work. And just for the snippy comment about the picture taking, I would've come back with my full on camera and taken all the pictures I wanted and posed the cakes until the store manager asked me to leave. Of course then I'd also have to point out how I have a HUGE mouth and I'd be telling the world how I was treated and at exactly which store.

Overall, I'd say it was all just complete idiocy on the bakery's part.

If all they can make is wrecks, they should make it their specialty.

Come buy a cake from us! You'll have no idea what the original order was, and the final piece will blow you away! Your child will never whine about future cakes again!"

It's a niche to be filled.

From the description, it sounds like a grocery store's bakery.

I don't know about you all, but more often than not, at least when I'm at the grocery store, the bakery is deserted.

Just go back after 8pm or 9pm, or around lunch time, and snap the photo when the workers are in the back or on their break or gone for the day.

If it's one of those large stores where there is way more store area than employees to cover it, you're home free. :-)

Ms. Tantrum's description is hilarious. They do need to get a clue about making crapola.

And they need to get an even bigger clue about yelling at customers. tsk tsk.

Susanlee said...

Well, ya know if they're scared of being on Cake Wrecks, maybe they should make better cakes!

you know, that info on photography is moot just based on the fact that the owner of the property asked that no photos be taken... see the second paragraph under the "General Rule" section from Krages:

Whether you need permission from property owners to take photographs while on their premises depends on the circumstances. In most places, you may reasonably assume that taking photographs is allowed and that you do not need explicit permission. However, this is a judgment call and you should
request permission when the circumstances suggest that the owner is likely to object. In any case, when a property
owner tells you not to take photographs while on the premises, you are legally obligated to honor the request.

if this was not a small, privately owned bakery, then the bakery and store managers are NOT the owners, but employees, and as such don't have the legal right to make you stop. ans mrs. tantrum, having someone follow you while you shop is definitely harassment, as you have done nothing to legally merit that. i myself would be annoyed enough to bring both these issues to light of the management. (i have done so in the past when i & my family have been obviously followed in stores because we have colored hair & dress weird.)

aw that's actually quite sad... they can't help it if they are told to make really bad ideas into cakes, or are given limited colours, materials, or icing tools.
