Stop the Insanity!!

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

I discovered something today that was so mind-blowing that I just had to share. And let me preface it by saying I'm not calling this entry a Wreck; it's just crazy.

So here's the deal: most of you know how much I love Cute Overload, right? No? Well, I do. Ok, so the other day I was cruisin' the cute, and I came across this photo:

Frickin' adorable, I know, but that's not the point. The point is, it was posted on CO just a few days ago, but over two weeks ago Melinda L. sent me this cake, made by Cakes With a Difference:

What the hey? Is there some crazy cat cake creating time warp going on? (Try saying that 3 times fast...) These are so similar, now I'm dying to know if this cake was actually made for the snuggle-cats' owner. Anyone know?
JAMIE'S CREW said...

Dunno about the origin of that cake, but EWWWWW !!!!!!! Sorry - but that "cake" doesn't look very appetizing. It is rather, ummm, poo-like....

Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

WOW! It had to be from the same photo.

Brooke said...

There is NO WAY I could cut into a cake that looked like two cute kittens...

Anonymous said...

Word of advice: The gal who has the blog with those cats was all pissed off that someone used her photos without permission by sending them to Cute Overload. You might want to swap that pic with a link!

Dea said...

That's just....ick....I just lost my cat, and it's too similar to him after his heart stopped...:(

Jessica said...

I really doubt it. The original photo is from agnesandhenry.blogspot.com - if you scroll down a bit you can see a couple posts where they talk about it getting posted on cuteoverload without their permission. I'm pretty sure if they had commissioned a cake, they would have posted about it. I guess you could ask them, though.

sues2u2 said...

The original photo? Adorable. The cake? *gasp, choke, ralph*!

The Courteous Chihuahua said...

You may not be calling a wreck, Jen, but I am. Ick!

Anonymous said...

Could they have posed the cats to mimic the cake? That would be weird, but better than thinking there is some kind of cat-cake continuum thing going on!

clueuin said...

Jamie's crew: Are you nuts?! That cake is sooo cuuute!
....And so are the pictures of those cats. Awwwwwww!
Weird world we're livin' in though, huh?
What are the odds that the cat owner is the cake buyer?
(Now trying saying that 3 times fast! LOL)

Peace,
Clueuin

I have a picture of my two cats that are in a very "loving" pose. It made me smile and I had to grab my cell phone camera to capture it before they moved...

I believe it could be a totally random thing - but one that can happen often with multi-cat homes.

Life's a Beach! said...

Ewwwwww. I can't imagine eating the fur. I think I'd end up with a hairball.

African Kelli said...

seriously. Who wants to eat cat? GROSS.

Nauntie Lush said...

Okay, that picture was cute. That cake on the other hand was about as gross as those cakes that look like babies that they want you to eat. ICK!

M K Glass said...

When I was young I had a book called 101 uses for a dead cat. I guess this is #102

[evil grin]

Cute Overload? blech! How girly!

Corey Wilde said...

No way I'm having any of that cake. Cat poo-ish -- ick! Ptooie!

the willards said...

it looks like that cake would have been made from that picture! but... i have to say... that is one hideous cake.

Anonymous said...

http://agnesandhenry.blogspot.com/

There's the kittens' owner's blog. She hasn't mentioned anything about a cake, though.

Holly @ Domestic Dork said...

I dunno...I think the cake is pretty cute (though not half as cute as the real kittehs). Of course, that then creates the dilemma of can I cut into it without crying over the death of two kittens?

Wade's World said...

Who orders a 2 kitten cake?

Seriously...do they plan on eating it? What a perfectly good waste of icing.

Rebecca said...

How, OH how, did they make the kitty cake look so furry?
Do do do do......you know, the theme song from Twighlight Zone?
LOL!

warren said...

They're obviously Schrödinger's cats; and that is his cake.

Rolsen said...

I don't know about the cake-but I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!! I just started following it. Keep up the great work!!

Kat Mortensen said...

Wow! I might as well anesthetize my crew, put 'em on a platter and carve 'em up! Yuck!

I think I would be imagining cat-hairs in my mouth with every bite, if I tried to eat this. Not good.

(You're right. That is a cute photo though.)

I *love* your blog - your posts give me a smile even on my worst days. I also subscribe to Cute Overload, so seeing this cake after I rec'd the post on CO at my Facebook was very cool indeed!

Just Mairs said...

Cute pic nasty cake. I'd call the cake a wreck - looks *exactly* like something my dog threw up a couple of weeks ago....no lie! Hey...maybe my dog ate the cute cats?!

Kammah said...

Ok, the "fur" on the cake is a bit too realistic looking for me. I'll admit to being tempted by many a cake on this site, despite how they looked like. This one though...I get the impression it would taste less like buttercream...and more like furball...

Anonymous said...

I don't think that the cake is all that similar to the picture. The positions are different and the markings on the tortie don't match up and her nose is a different color on the cake.

Cats who get along will often curl up like that. My guess, cake was based off of different cats.

Lori said...

Thats totally a different set of cats. Look at the noses.

Katie Kiekhaefer said...

Okay, this is slightly (only slightly) off topic but I just ordered a cake from a bakery and I said "I'd like it to say Happy Birthday Dad with an exclamation point" and I had visions of the cake actually saying "Happy Birthday Dad With An Exclamation Point."

Must. Step. Away. From. Cake Wrecks.

:)

You could have titled this one creepy and creepier.

A friend linked me to your blog because I was having a rotten day and she thought you'd cheer me up. And you did. I've been reading back through your posts and laughed so hard I cried. A lot. Thanks for just being you!

Anonymous said...

I'm creeped that the live cats appear to be on a table and then there's baked cat..It's screams Vincent Price.

Anonymous said...

Two things came to mind when I looked at this cake:
1.) LOL kittehs are expanding from teh interwebz to teh cakez!
2.) Maybe this cake was REALLY for a bachelor party and the subject matter was mixed up by a nice British baker.
But I know you run a G rated blog so I'll keep that to myself. :-D

This, much like the litter box cakes is just too kitty-tastic for me.

Anonymous said...

Could be coincidence. My cats curl up together like that all the time. 'Course, after a few seconds, Pudding totally vampires on Henry Rollins, and he hisses and runs away.

Anonymous said...

Hmm...it's weird how it could be a total coincidence, or some crazy person who was like "OH MY GOODNESS, that picture is so adorable I want a CAKE made after it!!!". People are insane sometimes...

It is a recurring theme.

Ying yang type shape and idea with a blakc and white cat. Gaiaonline has the same theme as a puzzle format.

Unknown said...

For a brief, heart-stoppingly funny moment, I thought the top picture of the kittehs was actually the cake...

Anonymous said...

I thought cat was the other white meat. You mean to say they're actually cake?

Heather said...

just like to say that since i'm not allowed to eat cake anymore, i will be logging in daily to see horrid cakes shaped like kitties just to turn my appetite away from cake.

thanks for helping me on the first day of my struggle.

the real cats are cute!

Garret said...

Ewwwwwwwwwwww. I think it is a wreck. People, stick with inanimate objects!

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but as a dog-lover/cat-hater, I fail to see anything cute about that picture.

Anonymous said...

Kitties: TALK ABOUT CUTE!!

Cake: Certainly, it's an infinitely better effort than I could ever put forth. However... there's something about it... the colours, maybe, or the texture... if I didn't have my glasses on, I'd think I was looking at something unspeakably foul.

Harley Dee said...

Wow, that's spooky.. even spookier would be the person who enjoyed slicing into that cake and eating it :)

wombat said...

Never mind the cake... how could someone be mad because their picture was on Cute Overload???

Katy said...

Ew. I don't even want to look at that cake, much less eat it. It scares me.

Anonymous said...

what's with the bad photoshop job on the cake?!?!?

Anonymous said...

She was mad because the pictures were credited to someone else.

Angel said...

That has to be one of the weirdest cakes I have seen. Gross.

Elizabeth said...

This photo is over six years old. I did not commission that cake.

I love your site...i cant find where to become a follower. Help lol.

ok nevermind...I got it! You're so funny btw! =))

Gross.

How can one possibly cut into the kitty cat cake?
And the snuggling kitties ... cute babies!

Anonymous said...

D'aawwwww! Itssocute (the first pic not the cake. As cute as it is, cutting into a baked effigy of a beloved pet doesn't exactly say party to me)!
:3
you've officially broken my brain. I'm now THINKING in babytalk. I hope you're happy

Anonymous said...

Just discovered your site. Love it!

Anonymous said...

The cats in the pic, cute.
The cats on the cake look dead.
Oh so gross thinking about the person getting the piece of cake with the paw that just walked in the imaginary kitty litter box...

I think I'm going to vom.

@nh92 - take a lesson from Thumper, if you can't say nothin' nice, don't say nothin' at all. :)

(interesting to me, that dog-lovers tend to hate other animals and especially cats, while cat-lovers tend to be animal-lovers in general. But I digress).

@monster - lol. I have a friend with a cat who has a propensity for putting littery paws in my friend's (full) drinking glasses :)

Kathy said...

I'm mesmerized by the ears on that cake--bygod, you can see the blood vessels coursing through the skin, that is oddly realistic!!

How great is this?!?! Cute Overload is #1 on my bookmarked site lists. Then I found Cake Wrecks from a link Mary Alice posted in the Charm City Cakes blog and have been hooked ever since. I've just recently started reading the comments, and now I see that some of the readers speak LolSpeak. The best of the best all under one roof! The interwebs has become my happy place! :D

The cat cake isn't bad, but that older than dirt cake is utterly disgusting. Blech.

I like cats. I like cats in Cat Form only. Not in Cake form. Careful! Cake cats can cause corybantic coeliac convulsions! That's all the alliteration I can think of this morning.

Bri said...

I think the cake is cute in a storybook illustration way. I'm an artist, forgive me...I see them on paper and they are super cute!

The picture is gibberish-provoking cute!

Awesome blog!

Anonymous said...

I am a dog lover and I like other animals too...I just happen to be mildly allergic to cats...and badly executed cat cakes (lol)

btw - who the hell poses cats?!

Anonymous said...

I have three kitties and they're always asleep in similar poses, so it's not that unusual to see hugging sleepy kitties :) The cake though...I think it's definitely a wreck.

Anonymous said...

If you like cute overload you should check out icanhascheezburger.com (no www). It takes a few minutes to "get" the language, but once you do it's adorable.

Love the blog!!

Oh boo hoo.

Anonymous said...

Ew! It looks like 2 day old roadkill.

Anonymous said...

The photo is Agnes and Henry, two graduates of the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee - they are siblings from the same litter. I doubt it's at all related to the cake. That's a very common pose for two cats that are very close. It I were you, I'd just remove the cat photo, especially if you don't have their permission to use it. The cake speaks for itself. The photo is unnecessary, I think.

E.A.D. said...

You know what that cake looks like? A pair of those toy cats that actually "breathe" while they sleep. The fur looks so real. I don't think I could eat that cake without expecting a mouthful of cat hair.

Anonymous said...

I think the cake resembles 2 cats, who after being eaten by a boa constrictor were then regurgitated by the snake.

Anonymous said...

Wow...that cake is pootastic!

Anonymous said...

Weird. My husband said it best: I showed him the real kitties, and he said, "Aww, Cuuute!". Then I showed him the picture of the cake. He said "Ew. Looks like two poops hugging.".
Ha ha.

And I don't get people who post pictures of their kids, or kitties, or whatever on the internet and then get their panties in a wad when someone else thinks it is cute enough to post elsewhere. If you post material that is not copyrighted in the public realm, it becomes public property.

woo, that is one supremely cute photo... First I saw it on Agnes and Henry's blog and immediately had to show it to everyone in the room. A week or so later it showed up on Cute Overload. Now here on Cake Wrecks.... somehow its cute factor is transporting it to all of my bookmarked websites!

As for the cake... ick.

Anonymous said...

All I can think of on this one is the armadillo cake from "Steel Magnolias." If you cut it open, will it be blood red?

(I cringe at the thought.)

gasp! censorship on cakewrecks? Ah well, I'll live.

LOL my three year old daughter saw this cake and asked, "Are those dead cats Mom?" Ummm, yeah, it was the first thought that crossed my mind too, honey!

Anonymous said...

My 3 year old daughter looked at the cake and said, " Awww a chinchilla."

The hugs of the kittens look different from each other, so I don't think the cake-kittens are the same as the official kittens.

But then, I'm only guessing. Its the cutest love-cake I've seen.
