Sunday Sweets to Make Henson Proud

Sunday, September 28, 2008

I have a huge statue of Kermit the Frog occupying the corner of my desk. It has light-up fireflies behind Kermit and plays the Rainbow Connection. I love it.

I mention this by way of introduction to today's featured NON-Wreck, made by Heather Haynes of Clarksville, Indiana:

Yes, it's all the characters from the Muppet Show, modeled in fondant, on cake.

Awesomeness.

The Electric Mayhem is looking mighty groovy.

And I love Camilla the chicken. Say, have I mentioned that my hubby John does a fantastic Swedish Chef impersonation? Seriously. If you ever meet him, ask him to say "Bork bork bork" for you. It's downright uncanny.

Of course a Muppet Show cake would never be complete without their in-house peanut gallery, Statler and Waldorf. Still, I'm guessing even those two curmudgeons wouldn't find a thing to complain about on this sweet creation.

I don't have any info on baker Heather; I only know this cake won the blue ribbon at the 2007 Kentucky State Fair. If anyone has more info or a website for her, be sure to let me know.

Also, there's a nice slide show of these and more photos here. Thanks to all of you readers who sent in the link!

FANTASTIC!
I don't think I could ever eat it though! I love the Muppets and so do my kids. I think somehow the idea of taking a bite out of Kermit is wrong :| And I'd keep Animal...he's always been my favorite, hehe.

I love Beaker! Too awesome. This cake is amazing!! No wonder it won!

That's great!!!

My husband actually does a fantastic impression of the Swedish Chef, as well...it's one of the things that attracted me to him, when we met waaay bak in middle school. Funny guys = good. :-D

I love the Muppets; I love this cake. I still get sad when I about Jim Henson being gone.

That thing is awesome! Great details.

Shan said...

Her name is Heather Haynes and she is from Clarksville, Indiana. She won honorable mention in 2005 in Wilton's Cake Decorating contest with a cake called "A Mad Tea Party." From what I can tell, she has no web site or anything.

Bridget said...

This cake is great! :) We've been renting all of the Muppet Shows from Netflix...my nine-year-old loves them. I can't believe it's been so many years since they were on!

Cyberhippien said...

Well, sorry to disappoint you all, but the Swedish chef doesn't speak Swedish. We don't understand him either...

Kristin said...

This cake is fantastic. She did a terrific job. I'd be scared to eat it.

Elissa in NJ said...

That is the best cake I've ever seen.

Wildhair said...

That's absolutely stupendous!

When Jim Henson died, my first thought was, "I wonder if Kermit is OK." Silly. I know. But that's how lifelike and endearing The Muppets are to me.

Miss Attitude said...

This is quite impressive, I can't imagine eating it though. I'm with v. nicharico, isn't it wrong to bite off Kermit's head?

Josh said...

Statler: You know, there's nothing like a good cake.

Waldorf: Yeah, and this is nothing like a good cake.

Both: Dwoah! Ho ho ho ho!

Sorry, I had to!

It's time to put on make-up, it's time to light the lights...

I would admire the hell out of this cake, take many hundreds of photos, and then eat it with great enjoyment. Yes, MOI!

I don't know how you can eat something so beautiful! (I feel the same way when I watch Ace of Cakes and see all that work go into something someone is gonna eat!)

I love the cake - it's a piece of work (and I am from the muppet era so I'm LOVING it!).

ZOMG!!! Professor Bunson Honeydew and Beaker!!! The Electric Mayhem!!! Gonzo!!! Camilla!!! Scooter!!! Sam the All-American Eagle!!!

(faints dead away from the awesome)

You know, when The Muppet Show was on the air, my family judged the relative coolness of celebreties by how they interacted with Muppets. My father's brain nearly imploded the night Alice Cooper was on. Here was this freaky guy wearing makeup and singing songs that creeped him entirely...but he was so great with Muppets he had to be cool...but he was a freak...but he was cool...it was amusing to watch.

I'll never forget the one with Rudolph Nureyev, simply because he looked like he was having the time of his life dancing a spoof ballet (Swine Lake) and singing a duet with Miss Piggy.

I'm with middle aged woman, this would be a wedding cake to stand up and cheer for...even if I would feel guilty eating Kermit.

Bethany said...

That is awesome! I love the Muppets- what an incredible cake! :)

Indigo said...

This is an incredible cake. I'd have to take all the fondant characters off, shellac them, and put them on a shelf. I couldn't eat them.

Not only because they're the muppets, but because look at all the loving effort that went into making them? All that detail. Sam's feathers! Rolf's fur! Gonzo's argyle sweater!

How is it that someone from Indiana enters the Kentucky State Fair?
I don't remember seeing this cake when we went to the fair last year, and I know we stopped by the baked goods and such...
Hmmm... I'll probably remember it later...

Wow.
To recreate the characters so true to their form? Truly a gifted person!

Jen, this is one of my all-time favorite cakes - I can't believe I didn't think to send this for a Sunday blog. You get extra props for posting this near Jim's birthday, too, which was this past Wednesday, 9/24.

I'm huge fan of the Muppets. I entered my wedding reception to "Mahna Mahna" (wish we'd had this cake!). My car's license plate is MUPPET (and the car's name is Camilla). My blog is named in honor of the Swedish Chef. For all of these reasons, I tip my hat to you for honoring this cake.

For anyone who's looking for some Muppety fun and news, I'd recommend checking out http://www.toughpigs.com!

I agree, I don't think I could have eaten it. For sure I would have taken the fondant characters off and preserved them, somehow....
She is awesome and the likenesses are FABU!!!

Absolutely gorgeous!!! The only notable (IMO) missing is Rizzo the Rat.

Surely Jim is up there somewhere smiling down on Heather for her faithful re-creation, and on you Jenn for spotlighting them this week.

(Netflix has The Muppet Show?? OMG, I'm signing up TODAY! My 18 m/o daughter needs the exposure!)

Melissa said...

Wow, fantastic. How do you serve a cake like that, though? I wouldn't know where to start cutting...

I also admired (and took loads of pics) of this cake at the fair last year! It's SO amazing! Heather, if you are out there, you can charge any amount for a cake even half this good and my husband will get it for me for next year's b-day, at my command! We were anxiously trying to guess which cake at this year's KY State Fair was Heather's. (Perhaps the garden gnomes? Anyone know?) This is the best cake ever.

Maureen said...

Since nobody else has mentioned it so far, I will comment that this awesome cake is based on the gala sequence from The Great Muppet Caper. Kermit and Piggy are posed in a pretty good recreation of the fountain that Miss Piggy does her synchronized swimming number in. (Minus the fountain part, probably because Piggy still has her evening gown on.) The outfits are all exactly right. She must have watched the sequence many times to get it so right.

Blythe said...

Holy Moly! That is one fabulous cake! The Chef is my fave character too.

Cheers!

Oh. my. GOSH! I love the Muppets! I love cake!! I love this blog! Put it all together... oh, man, I think I'm hyperventilating out of the excitement of it all. This is one freakin' sweet cake. Heather, whoever and wherever you are, I bow down to you!!!

Kansas girl said...

That is AWESOME. Also, I need to know where you got a Kermit with light up fireflies that plays Rainbow Connection. I mean seriously, I NEED to know this.

Statler and Waldorf would probably manage to complain about the cake being fattening if they couldn't object to the artistry. Just amazing.

(Hmm. Netflix... now that I've graduated and passed the bar and have a job, i.e. now that I have more income AND more time, it might just be time for a Netflix sub. Muppet Show would be high on the list.)

That. is so. AWESOME!!
The muppets have always held a special place in my heart, and seeing such an amazingly made homage to them is the coolest thing ever.
On a related note, it would have been a crime NOT to have put the Swedish chef on the cake. A crime I say!
Great to see some real cake talent on this site once in a while. It gives me faith in humanity.
YAAAAAAAYY! *flails!

This cake is absolutely magical, I love it!

Just thought I'd share this with everyone: there is a Swedish Chef Google (i.e. Google Bork). It's one of google's funny language things, it's just like regular google, except that the opening google page is written as if by Swedish Chef. Your searches all come back in regular English though, so funny! Here's the link:

LOVE it - what a wonderful job on every single character! I wouldn't be able to eat it (don't like fondant that much) but wow!!! I'm with you on the chicken - so awesome!

Mary Kay said...

My fav has always been Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker the intrepid assitant. I see they are on one side of the cake and Beaker is surprisingly in one piece.

Usually Dr B blows him up.

Ex-LondonMagnetGirl said...

Amazing, I couldn't draw that well, let along make those characters out of fondant!

The cake is awesome! Muppets are awesome! They need to cancel most of the crap that passes for kid TV these days and rerun the Muppets and Looney Tunes!

but I see one mistake - Floyd, the bass player in Dr. Teeth's band, is supposed to be pink

LOL...my fiance does a pretty good impression of "bork! Bork! Bork!" too. Maybe he and your hubby can have a contest!

I live about 3 minutes away from Clarksville, Indiana. Possibly she works for one of our local bakeries! I will definitely be looking out for her name from here on out...

Michelle Baker said...

PS - to the person who asked how someone from Indiana enters the KY state fair: Clarksville is about 5 minutes away from Louisville, KY, which is where the state fair is held. They don't limit entries to residents of Kentucky. Just FYI!

For the one or two of you who have inquired about my Kermit statue: first off, you can't have it. :)

Secondly, my hubby got it a few years ago from The Art of Disney Store at the park, and it's called a "big fig". I don't know if they still carry them there, but I did see one over on ebay. Hope that helps.

Cakes and baked good that are show items don't get eaten unless they are being entered as a taste item. At our state fair (which is still very agricultural and 4H-ish), there are many items that are submitted for taste contests. Then there are the ones such as wedding cakes, show cakes like this one etc, that are judged solely on the decorating, elaboration, constancy of theme, difficulty.

They're not cut into and eaten. And considering that they are baked and sometimes semi-constructed beforehand, and then they usually sit in a (dusty fairground) Exhibit hall for the 2 weeks of the fair....they're not anything you'd want to eat anyway.

mp. said...

OMG, are you kidding me with that thing?!? that is nothing short of a-freakin'-mazing! the only thing though... i'd REALLY have to struggle with actually cutting in and eating it.

and thank god she didn't include those rats that show up in the later muppet movies (particularly the one w/ the jewel heist in london)...
