Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

Sunday, January 30, 2011

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

That giraffe? Oh my gosh... who knew being neck-less could be so cute!!

I think my grand daughter would really like the first book. She intends to grow up, go to vet school, and work in a zoo with baby animals. (She's 9, and has serious plans.)

I absolutely ADORE the unicorn cake!! Sooooo cute!

And I like the 2nd book...although I'd take either one!

Ginger said...

The '20s hairstyle is so much better on a baby zebra than it would be on a guy.
And my girls have Lisa Frank coloring books right now that look just like that tiger (except they tend to make them pink and purple.) Book #1 would be their choice.

Kelly said...

Who knew Cthulu was such a cute baby? I wonder when things started to turn . . .

PS- If I win your draw, please send me the kids version of the book.

Anonymous said...

Oh, my! My daughter would love the second book! She is all about animals right now :)

Susan Peretic said...

I like the first book! Also, that first cake is from a bed set that I bought for my first baby!

I would like either book but prefer the 2nd.

These are all just too cute! And I'd love the first book as I'm expecting my first baby's arrival any time now :)

Thanks so much for sharing these books! If I had to choose, I'd go with the 2nd one. If not, I'll just come back to visit baby Cthulu. (Genius.)

Um...Pandas and nesting dolls are seriously two of my favorite things (true story: I actually *do* have Panda nesting dolls).
my kiddos would love the first book.

BrittanyShamrock said...

I thought the pandas were adorable until I scrolled down to the teddy bear cake. Adorable does not even begin to cover it. :D

Sarah Rosenzweig said...

I'm all for either book... my kid and I would share either one!

And John, normally you are right on with the cuteness, but this week I'll have to fight you on one of these cakes.

A multi-size stack of black and white binoculars does not a stack of cute pandas make!

~ Sarah

The Mauermans said...

Either one would be perfect.

Unknown said...

Zooborn! My husband would never let me have that book. I would start begging for all the cute little squishy babies!

Dani said...

Awww baby Chtulu! I'd never have tought of that.

Hmmm if I must pick....I'd say I want the first one for kids because my daughter likes books as much as I do and she's got more room on her book shelf.

hattalahutta said...

OMG, that Cthulhu cake is the most adorable ever! Want to make one for a friend :) I'd like the second book, so pick me, please! :)

Tanya Adams said...

I absolutely love the cuddly combo of baby animals and cake. It's so endearing!
I'd probably love either books if I win. But considering I'm not a small child, the second one would be a better fit.

*tara* said...

I would love the second Zooborn book! Please pick me!

Jacqui said...

So Cute! I would love the one for the kids. Both of my kiddos would love it.

wigglyeyez said...

Anytime I need a smile I know I can come to your sites.
And if I'm lucky enough to get one of the books. I'll take the one the other person doesn't want. When it comes to cute, I'm not picky!

Anonymous said...

Oh my freaking god, I think I'm going to have cavities. o_O The dragon cake nearly did me in and then there were pandas...

That second book is really cute, btw, but I fear it would murder me.

The Miller Five said...

I would totally pee my pants to win the second book!

Angelica said...

Wow! The adorableness overwhelms! i'd prefer the second book, but the first book would be cool too. By the way, are these somehow Russian koalas disguised as pandas?

Those were all really adorable! Hard to think of Chthulu as cute, but she totally made it so!
Both of those Zooborn books are really cool, maybe I would prefer the second one. However, either of them would be welcome in my library and enjoyed by my entire family.

Theresa said...

I'm the baker who created the tiger cake! My name is Theresa Gue. It was at the New York Cake Convention. His name was Lionel, for irony's sake.

Hayley M said...

After I finished reading this post and moved on to a new tab, something started niggling at me. And the something is this:
Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, not pandas. Pandas eat bamboo. I mean I know your pandas are of the Russian Nesting variety, but eucalyptus trees grow in Australia so they're about as not-Russian as you can get...?

~Sarah~ said...

I would love the Zooborns book for adults, but either would be fantastic. The baby Cthulhu cake is wonderful! :D

Sarah

Cindy said...

My boys would love that children's book. So cute!

The Writing Goddess said...

The stacked Pandas/Binoculars were a little on the creepy side for me, but the rest were adorable.

Giraffe with no neck, seems to be missing the point, but cute nonetheless. The tigers all rock, because tigers DO.

Would be delighted with EITHER book. Love the baby tiger, love the big-eared whatever-that-is.

But they're super adorable regardless of who inspired whom and all that jazz.

the second book :]

Unknown said...

The "fuzziness" of the teddy bears is a great effect. How did they do it? 'Cuz fuzzy wuzzy isn't very nice on the tongue, so it's got to be frosting or something, right?

I'd like the zooborns book for everyone, but would happily take the kids version if that's what you got left, to read with my god daughter.

I want the second one! -deborah

I like the second book.. :) and the unicorn is fantastic! :)
i will also note that i had to order a cake the other day for my mother's birthday. i wanted something with dragonflies on it. And, it took every bit of self-control i possessed not to order a cake with the words "purple dragonflies" piped onto it in green frosting. :D

I must find a way to keep my daughter from seeing today's post. When she sees this much cuteness she may try to decorate the nursery for Bean (my future grandchild) in fondant!

Would love the kids' book if I win.

I think the first Zooborn book is perfect! I have to say my I'm with Jen, my favorite cake was the first one. So peaceful...since you know the lion was controlling himself.

Zooborns? Cake Wrecks? Together under one digital roof?? Oh PINCH ME!! What an awesome way to top off a week spent getting to know my weapoms-grade-adorable newborn son after lo those many months of him inside me...oh heck, I think I'm'a gonna asplode in rainbows!! (double ones, even!) ;-)

Which book...which book...um, the second? The first? Who cares, it's Zooborns!!

These are absolutely wonderful Sunday Sweets! They always are, but these are super great. And my kids' lovies were all represented - giraffe, tiger and zebra - and all so cute! (I can't overuse the term "cute" this week - because they're all just so cute. Cute-aliscious in fact.)

Either of those books would be wonderful, but I'd probably go with the kids' book if I won.

OMG! OMG! OMG! Cute animals cakes AND a chance to win a Zooborn book? Can my Sunday get any better? (I guess so, if I would win the second book for grown ups with a kid's heart!)

LOVE this post and I think the Teddy Bear Cake is the sweetest!

I would like the second Zooborn book -- for the rest of us, even though I do have the immaturity of a child.
