I Think the Baker Used Too Much Oil...

Thursday, May 20, 2010

I hate to jump on the BP-bashing wagon - and I hope you'll forgive me for being crude - but this sarcastic eco-wreck cake was simply too slick to pass up.

Thanks to skooksie & craftylildevil for spilling the...beans. By the way, I hear cake goes great with Texas tea.

UPDATE! Today, we have a special treat for all our RSS readers: an ad wreck!

Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?

At least they're not whispering it in your ear.

I don't know, considering this isn't a wreck, or at least not presented as such, I don't see what you gained by turning your blog into a forum for political commentary, even if that commentary takes the form of cake. Anyone who uses oil-based products (and that would certainly include anyone who has access to a car, synthetic fiber, modern medicine, a computer, etc.) is a hypocrite for attacking oil companies. If you want to go live in a cave and hunt your own food, make clothes out of animal skins, etc. keep on with the "big oil" bashing. If you actually prefer modern life, understand that without oil companies, we wouldn't have modern lifestyles. I doubt you will post this, just make sure you read it....

It's not a political anything. It's a kinda tasteless, kinda funny cake dealing with current events. Jen and I both cringed when we saw it.

That is hilarious. And disgusting. I envision the entire cake eaten by hungry people except for that last two inches of black slop.

And gah, Anonymous #1, pull your panties out of your crack and breathe a little. What is it with these people who read political/social commentary into CAKES? If you read serious commentary into everything you see on the internet, you should probably step away from the computer and learn to enjoy life a little more.

Eli said...

Anonymous #1,

Since when does pointing out the shortcomings of something make you a hypocrite? It doesn't. It just means there's room for improvement.

Aside from that, if BP would have accepted responsibility from the beginning instead of shifting blame, lying, and trying to shaft the victims, I think people would have a little more tolerance.

Aside from that....get a sense of humor, dude!

That does not look delicious. :X Slick black stuff. You see, I hate piping gel of all sorts because it just...it looks like Nickelodeon slime rather than food!

Dear Anonymous: If you wanna post cake-unrelated criticism like that, have the balls to stick your name to it. Otherwise, tl;dr intarweb coward move on. :P

Anonymous said...

Thought I'd put my 2 cents in. But BP shouldn't be getting the blame. The company the DWH was owned by should be. BP in not onboard as they contracted to Transocean.

Anyway. I have 4 friends/classmates (one of which is my fiance) who are there right now, working for BP, to fix this.

The focus should be on the lives lost and prayers for their families.

wv: difying - some of the early commenters are difying the intent of this post

Michelle said...

To Anonymous the first, if you read Jen's definition of a wreck, it doesn't have to be horribly executed, it only needs to be "unintentionally silly, sad or inappropriate". So regardless of political feelings or feelings toward dependency on oil, who decided a cake with an oil slick was a good idea?! It is undeniable that it will have an effect on people's livelihoods and the ecosystem of the Gulf and beyond. What are we going to see next? Cake celebrating the people who's homes were mowed down by tornadoes or hurricanes? I see cake as a celebratory thing, and an oil slick under any circumstances doesn't seem like something to celebrate.

elissa said...

[sarcasm] Black, shiny frosting--yum. Looks delicious, doesn't it? I definitely want one of those pieces! [/sarcasm]

Anonymous #1, work for an oil company, do you? Just because we use oil doesn't mean we don't have a right to be pissed about how this disaster has been handled. No matter what you think of BP, though, you've got to admit that oil-slick frosting looks repulsive.

kjl said...

Okay seriously, what is with Mr/Ms Anonymous chastising you for "turning your blog into a forum for political commentary." How in the world was that 3 sentence post a commentary on anything but the cake? What is with people?

The cake, in my opinion, is perfect in it's wreckiness. Who makes a cake (which happens to be hideous) to celebrate a horrific tragedy?

elissa said...

Nancy McGill said...

See, I would consider it a wreck because I couldn't figure out whether this was actually applauding BP's efforts to fix the problem, OR if it is actually an attack. The ambiguity is what makes it funny, to me.

Anon #1- how is this political commentary? Are you suggesting that one political party favors oil spills, and thus we should not be attacking this pro-oil-spill group?

Using oil certainly does not mean we should be sheep and allow oil companies to do whatever they please, allow as many workers to die, and pollute as much of our land as they like as long as they continue to provide us with oil. Do you honestly believe they shouldn't be held accountable? Are your own family members expendable, too, if they work for oil companies?

It's a shocking and weird cake, and I'm glad it was posted.

Hey Linda,

Oddly enough, and because I've met so many of you on our book tour, I usually assume that the readers of this blog and especially the commenters are well educated, thoughtful individuals. I assume, for instance, that Anonymous is probably a regular reader who is concerned that we're going down the political road and this concerns him/her.

I'm also aware that people tend to say things in an especially harsh way on the internet because they don't think anyone is listening and it's easy to hide behind the label of anonymous. The bad thing is that we read EVERY comment and usually take them to heart. And just so we're clear, Anonymous never intended for that comment to be published. He wrote it with the sole purpose of hurting us and making us feel bad. Kinda stinks.

Ah well. The life of a blogger.

For the rest of you, please know that we love and appreciate each and every one of you. You make it worth it.

And both BP and Transocean are at fault in this debacle...and that's all I will say about that here.

Hey, J & J,

1. WHY should YOU feel bad????
Did YOU make the cake, and was it made to make FUN of the disaster?
2. Did YOU cause the oil spill?
3. This cake is someone's personal "artistic" (read the term loosely, as it is used loosely)expression of a current event, and probably came out of frustration, as well.
Freedom of expression is GOOD.
Cake is good...usually ;)

Feeling the need to politicize every stinking thing is CRAP.

Rob the W, the cake was found in the Breaux Mart on Magazine Street in New Orleans. A friend of mine took that picture. And yeah, it's a crazy thing to put on a cake, but we are feeling pretty helpless down here in the face of the oil disaster. Since the events of August 2005, satire - even crudely done satire - is something of a survival tool.

My advice? If you serve up the cake, get everyone to donate to the Greater N.O. Foundation's Gulf Oil Spill Fund, to Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans, which is supplying the fishermen and women on the southeast Louisiana coast with food, as they are now out of jobs, and to Gulf Aid. Look 'em up.

I wrote a comment in which I pulled comments from people and criticized their views. I also included links to back up my statements. For some reason, the comment thingy isn't letting me send it (error messages), so the jist of what I was going to say is:

-I have commented once on this blog (yesterday, actually, I believe), but I find it necessary to comment again mainly because I work in politics and deal with this crap everyday so it's unfortunate to see a website like Cake Wrecks, that I read everyday and enjoy, start walking down a fine line of controversial and politically motivated issues.

- This was an unfortunate accident, though BP isn't the only one to blame. In fact, offshore drilling is statistically safer than say carrying oil in big container ships that crash. The federal government was slow to respond (no surprise) and there wasn't enough resources to back up the plans in place (shocker).

- Also, I notice those calling out anonymous commenters only post their first name. LOL. I will not take more time to explain the idiocy.

- John, I love this blog and have read it for at least a year now, but I'm tired of the "Oh the trolls" mantra. I used to feel for you, now I'm just irritated. I agree with your assumptions in the first paragraph. I don't think Anonymous wanted to hurt you, I choose to believe he was like me, and would hate to see this blog turn into a political forum for any side of the aisle which is why I'm taking time out of my day to respond.

- This blog has gotten political before, and for someone like me who works in politics it sucks to see something that could turn to the political road, which this could.

- The ad isn't really all that ironic when you take into consideration word recognition technology.

- Commenters are already starting to taking about (paraphrasing) "that one politcal party that supports oil spills" LOL The links I have for you.

- And whoever said tl;dr, please. tl;dr your way through life, my dear. Ignorance is bliss. Nothing to see here, move on.

John (and Jen),

I wasn't going to comment on this one, but reading others' comments I feel the need to leap into the fray.

(a) I love your site, and am very thankful to my friend who recently introduced me to it. I've been doing my best to pass the word on to others with a sense of humour!

(b) I think you guys handled the post perfectly-- the title and humour were clear that you weren't commenting on the disaster, the companies, action/non-action, etc. You were mocking a very poorly-done (lumpy icing!) cake that uses unappealing icing (black), is "anatomically" incorrect (no beach), may (or may not) be pointing the finger at the right firm, and appears to be celebrating a disaster. And you did it with your usually pun-erific style.

(c) To those trying to debate this: we don't have enough information yet to properly judge ANYTHING. Wait until it's over, the investigation and analysis are complete, reports are published, and you've read those reports. During a natural disaster, health emergency, war, etc, there's always conflicting evidence, incomplete information, etc. Sometimes those you thought behaved well turn out to have handled things badly, and those you thought didn't do enough (or do it right) weren't so bad after all. I don't know the oil industry at all-- but after SARS, H1N1, and other public health emergencies, I know very well how this applies. Wait until all the info's in until you pass judgment. I know that's an anathema in today's "why let a fact rule a perfectly good opinion"/"make the decision NOW!" culture, but it's key if we want to ensure that something like this never happens again.

[Feel free to keep this as private support, if you want to keep the discussion about cake rather than inappropriate debates. Or publish it if you want the debaters to see that many readers want to encourage your mocking of all things cake].

WV: nutarin. Don't let nutarin interfere with our mockery of poorly conceptualized and/or executed cakes!!

And yes, yes, those of us in the petroleum industry or with relations in the petroleum industry DO blame BP - we know what their safety and QA practices are like and have been like. There's drilling for oil and then there's drilling for oil SAFELY.

Insinuiating that we're all to blame because we all use petroleum products is like saying that we're all to blame for a drunk driver killing someone because we all drive cars.

Okay, okay, rant off. Just saying, that in Louisiana at least, we know how to make (and take) a joke!

Cake as Commentary said...

Alas, those who decorate cakes do, those who don't, must analyze and sometimes criticize.

The next time someone says: "Let them eat cake" in response to an ecological disaster or revolution .... hopefully there is some black shiny icing available because it really does look appropriately disgusting.

wv: makeye

He stood in the corner trying not to makeye with the compelling, yet disgusting, piece of social commentary formerly known as cake.

I can't believe that people somehow think that because of one post Jen is going to start posting tons of political commentary. Yes, I can just see it, anti-Bush and anti-Obama cakes, every day! It's only logical that after this one, single post, they go full-time into political postings, just to piss people off! We should post here to warn them against it! John and Jen, this blog is about CAKES!!!! I mean, I know this post was about a cake, but remember, stick it to cakes, but if a cake possibly makes a statement besides "I look like poo," it's bad and shouldn't be posted! I would hate to log onto this site one day and see a cake that doesn't look like a giant turd, after all.

I had no idea that the oil spill was a political controversy! Are there certain right wing groups who think we should have more oil spills?

Oooh just looking at that cake made me feel sick..would anyone survive eating it? All that black gooey frosting and the shine it has I think my insides would turn black permanently and I would live in the bathroom forever lol.

I'm always a little alarmed by people who try to dictate what you guys post on your blog, as if you're providing a civic service paid for by their hard-earned tax dollars. (Also, "I doubt you will post this" commenters are a HUGE pet peeve of mine. :-P)

I don't care what you post, I come back every day, mostly because of the bad-baking-induced hilarity, but maybe also because John's replies to commenters like this give me a strange sense of satisfaction in this internet world of no-consequences.

That said, this is one of the most tasteless cakes I've ever seen... so why do I feel like the bakers deserve a cookie? I suspect this cake may be a sarcasm win.

Love you guys, as always!

I'd just like to say that implying another person is a coward while calling them a hypocrite via an anonymous name is an absolutely hilarious and pointless contradiction.

Oh, this cake..... How did they get that texture for the water/oil?
I'm probably the 90th person to ask but I mean, really. How?

Prayers for the families affected short and long term by this mess.....

Wow!

I think people are more ticked at anon#1 than they are about the oil spill! LOL!

The cake is icky and funny...we'll call it ficky...

Gosh, I wish I'd been told cakes could be used as political commentary, I'd have baked my socks off a couple of weeks ago before the British elections...
John & Jen, I salute your patience & fortitude under the onslaught of so many pairs of knickers getting in a twist.
(I wanted to make a reference to pouring oil on troubled waters...too soon?)

For those asking about the texture on teh water, it looks like piping gel that's been colored to me. I can't be sure, but it certainly doesn't look like sugar work, so I'm going with gel.

PS. As I've stated many times, Jen & John rock. :)

When will we get to see a "bootheel on the neck" cake?

I think the wonderful people who will be spending so much time cleaning up this mess deserve such a cake!

Your puns have devastated me, yet left me in awe. I salute you.

Ooh, Anonymous, you are so wrong. If BP had buggered up my beautiful sea next to me, I would have MUCH more to say about it than you kindly Americans. Hazel Woodward, Cape Town, South Africa.
