Sunday Sweets: Cutesy Wootsy

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Once in a while here on Sunday Sweets, we build an entire post around just one fantastic cake. This is that cake:

(Made by Pink Cake Box)
I'm pretty sure I teared up a bit when I first saw it.

And since most of you would complain vigorously if we only had one cake on Sunday Sweets, here are a few more:

(Baker unknown)
Lions and tigers and... giraffes oh my!

(Made by Cortnie Hartwig)
The candle placement is a bit odd but those owls are super cute.

(Submitted by Margaret S. Baker unknown)
Jen thinks this bulldog is almost too realistic to be cute.
I think he's judging me.

(Made by Belinda at Lovable Cakes)
A sweet Easter lamb between smoke breaks.

The patches make this one.

(Made by Kylie Lambert of LeCupcake)
I don't know why but these cows make me want to eat more chicken.

(Made by Charmaine and found here)
There's nothing quite as sweet as a baby giraffe.

And finally, as I sit here with one of my beautiful cats asleep beside me and the other perched behind my neck whacking me with her tail, I think it would be nice to give a cakey shout-out to our furry friends:

(Made by Wendl and found here)
Simple yet adorable.

Every time I see things like this it makes me want to try fondant myself! They are just too adorable.

VentureSister said...

Heh heh, I just visited Maru's website for the first time a few minutes ago, so that last cake is especially awesome to me.

Seriously, people, you will not regret it.

Osaka_Mary said...

How can people eat those gorgeous cakes? They're works of art.

Junio said...

I think that the owls are having bright ideas. Hence the candles.

Unknown said...

Yes, the owls are cute, but my first thought was, "I know ear-candling is lame pseudoscience and all, but I still think you're doing it wrong."

Amy said...

I think the "cat in the Bag" cake was brilliant. I love the curious little paw. :D

They're all adorable (that 'Madeline' cake in particular just stole my breath)... but my favourite has to be the owls. Too adorable for words, seriously.

Jules AF said...

I don't think I could eat the cake with the lamb on it. It's just too cute.

Anonymous said...

*love* the cat in the bag especially--just like my cat, except her paws are rusty brown.

WV: tandrobi--hmmm, maybe an ingredient for a dyslexic Indian CW?

Anonymous said...

Aaaaawwww! These are so cute they made me almost teary-eyed! Amazing.

Anonymous said...

I love those owls! My first thought, though, was that if these were Woody Woodpecker cakes, with his niece and nephew, somehow the candles would make more sense. I also admit to needing coffee this morning.

Anyway, I love the lamb cake, too-- the bees are such an adorable idea!

Saigon & Baygon Inc. said...

Oooh, these are drop-dead cute! It's impossible to tell which one is my favourite...
The last one is fantastic! I can totally relate, since my own cat is crazy about paper bags, PLUS he's got green eyes and his legs are grey with a white sock!
You guys rule!

the cat in the bag is such a good one! it's called "Kitteh Gonna Get Ya!" on Cake Central http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1194009.html and it's uploaded by Wendl

that top cake is the most adorable thing I've seen in a Lonnnng time!

mickeyp415 said...

omg, the detail here is just amazing. the one w/ the cows is beyond adorable... and the kitty in the bag cracks me up -- it's so spot on. thanks as always for your sunday sweets!!!

Diana said...

There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with that bulldog's jaw. I know bulldogs are wrinkly, I HAVE one, and he's begging for my breakfast right now. The wrinkles make ANATOMICAL SENSE. They don't just sort of go everywhere. I wish the cake maker had sort of bothered to LOOK at a BULLDOG!

Jenn said...

Awesome! I especially love the cat in the paper bag. Perfect!

Chris said...

I have a question... what do lambs have to do with easter?

Cheressa said...

I ADORE the cute little Giraffe and the 3 owls! Awwwww!!

Amy said...

That giraffe cake would sit on my kitchen table for the next three years because I would be too afraid to bring a knife near it. *death by cuteness*

kg said...

i LOVE the one with the patches!!! these are so cute!

but wasn't that cow one already posted before?

Scarlett Robyn said...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
They are sooooooooooo cute!!!!!
My faves were the cat in the bag and the giraffe and the bunny. I loved all of them really!!!!

gatofish said...

Jen, those are great, but I have to say that I misread the caption on the cow cake as "Makes me want to eat more CHILDREN!"

Whoops! :)

bluethrowblanket said...

I LOVE the kitty in the paper bag! I want that cake for my next birthday.

the cat in the bag cake is fantastic!!!!!!!

Diane 1611 replied:

Hi Chris! Jesus Christ (the one who Easter is really all about) is also called the Lamb of God.

John, really cute cakes today! What are you going to do for an encore? LOL!

Marla said...

Hey, that's my friend Cortnie's owl cake! I can assure you it was even more adorable in person - and also very delicious. Each of those feathers is an individual piece - I was so impressed!

Meg said...

How cute are those!!

Kathleen,

Shoot! You're right. Sorry about that. Let's just say it's so good that Jen and I both posted it once.

Good eye!

Thank y'all for the comments on my Kitteh Gonna Get Ya cake! I did that three years ago in my first competition in Austin.
The floor tiles are individually made and laid. I ran out of time to put a logo on the bag, but it was my first go 'round.
I was inspired by my silleh kitteh GrisGris. :)
Thanks again!

Emily said...

These cakes were absoloutely adorable. I do concur, however, that the candle placement on the owls was odd.

I also liked the reference to Chik Fil A's slogan in your comments of the cakes (regardless of whether or not it was intentional). I found it amusing.

Nova Kristin said...

Being a huge Chick Fil A fan I loved the eat mor chikin shout out.

Easter, which is really about celebrating fertility, new growth, and all those other Spring perks, uses baby animals as symbols of that fertility. Hence all the baby animals, including lambs. Basically, anything ultra cute that goes with pastels qualifies, and ducklings, chicks, and lambs just so happen to fit that bill the best . . . besides the bunny, of course.

Hmm, I can't pick a favorite.

Sábada Kohm said...

The cat in the paper bag is the best. So true.

Keeley said...

How do they do it? My WV is pounces! Although my favorites are the cows and the lamb, the cat cake is adorable too.
Nuts, I mis-typed my first WV, so my second is OCARP. It fits too...

Kallie Sims said...

Oh my gosh, that bulldog!! FABULOUS!!!

And who cares about the candle placement on the owls, the detail work is wonderful!

Great post today :)

Tama said...

@VentureSister - thanks for the link to Maru's website. I love that cat!!

Fun cakes today!

bats :[ said...

I'd keep the little lion cake-topper forever (and the little sheep, and the little...). How long will something like this last? I just couldn't eat them or toss them!

Julia said...

I squee'd at the first one and the patchy rabbit. They are ADORABLE! Thank you for making my day.

Unknown said...

These are all adorable, but I love the owls--they remind me of "Sam and the Firefly", one of my fav childhood books. The illustrations of Sam the owl looked just like those cakes, and the writing in yellow icing looks like the messages the firefly wrote. OK, now I need to find out what happened to that book.

Belinda said...

Hi

Ohh I was just notified that my cake was on CakeWreck.. it scared the hell out me.. but thank god it is at Sunday Sweets!!

The little lamb is mine :)
And although not specially mad as an Easter cake it sure could be one!

Thanks for showing it!

Love the last one, it is great, but the other ones are very cute too!

http://agirlinherkitchen.blogspot.com

Unknown said...

I love them all, but the owl one really caught my eye. I think the momma owl is looking warily at her beloved babies, and the babies are trying to look all innocent even though they just got caught putting candles on their heads again.

Ryan said...

They are all freakin' adorable. The Owl candle placement doesn't bother me at all but, honestly, I can't get past the "Madeline" cake not having ears. (Maybe I'm missing the point?!)

Suzanne Dargie said...

The first one and the last one are my favorites! The blue tiger cub cookies are the crowning touch to go with that cake!
The "cat in a bag" is SOOOO cute because all cat owners have seen their pets do that at one time or another! (All you see are the eyes and a paw! Pure genius!)

Anonymous said...

You know, they're mostly lovely, but my first thought on seeing the sheep holding the squirting pink hot dog between its spread legs was that it surely belonged on a weekday edition...

Marie Bayer said...

How can anyone eat cakes that cute?? At least you're doing the cake world a favor when you eat the wrecks.

The cat in the bag has to be my favorite, simply because I have pictures of my cats doing the same thing.

Unknown said...

Ryan, The bunny cake does have ears, they're floppy ears.

Very cute animal cakes :3

D.B. Echo said...

How can you possible eat that giraffe cake? I mean, seriously - do you hack off the legs and give each one to someone, then maybe cut off the head and split it down the middle, so two people each get one half with an eye staring balefully at them? "You...killed...me...and after I brought you this flower and everything..."

Jacki said...

Ryan, the Madeline cake is a bunny - the ears are what are flowing down over her head and arms.

All of them are adorable - but the details on the owls - wow!

Anonymous said...

The blue lion cake is beyond adorable! And the matching cookies!!

The owl cake is really nicely done, but I can't to think the little owls are saying "Mommy, why do we have candles in our heads?" And the mommy owl is kinda ashamed to give an answer.

Melissa said...

Oh, gosh, the owls!
Big owl seems to be saying "Hey, uh, candles in your heads?"

And baby owls are "Wha? *blink, blink*

Also, LOVE the cat in the bag!

Julie said...

Some of these cakes are too cute to eat!!

Wreck-tastic said...

OMG. Reading "Cake Wrecks" while eating can be hazordous to your health, even on Sunday. The patched bunny was so adorable that I inhaled in shock and choked.
These are the most adorable cakes I've seen in years. They put all the other Sunday Sweets to shame.

Marianne said...

o. my. goodness. this post is so chock full of amazing I can barely handle it.

Lee Anne said...

The owl cakes were my daughter's second birthday cakes. The candles were there so she could have something to blow out. Samantha got to eat one of the baby owls all by herself. As Marla said, the baker is Cortnie Hartwig (vs. Courtnie). She is a dear friend and just baked the cakes for fun (free of charge). They tasted as good as they look! Also, I'm pretty curious to know from where the photo came.

Anonymous said...

Oh, too lovely to eat!

Anonymous said...

I'm really curious - what are these cakes like to eat? How much of them is just frosting? Is it GOOD frosting? What do they look like when you cut them up? Enquiring minds!

CookieMonster said...

I just love 'em! Amazing.

Cat, bag, cute.

Looking at that honestly cute lamb thing there, I cannot believe that during the whole Lamb Cake Debacle earlier on, I'd totally forgotten about a cake I had once, when I was young and foolishly sentimental (as opposed to my current state of "old and healthily jaded").
It was Easter time, and my older sister brought my family a store-bought, from -a -mold, lamb cake.
NO ONE ever got a chance to even taste it, because I thought that it was just too darn adorable to HURT --i.e. "eat". ("Cake? What cake? HERE, let's all have some lovely ice cream / pudding / toast...")

I swear, it spent YEARS just chilling out in its cool little apartment, only getting out for mini vacations (in a cooler) while I defrosted. Eventually the change of climate took its toll, and there came the time when all of the back & forth, in & out had the little critter looking like it'd had better days. Of course, it really hadn't--EVER--had any of those.
Anyway, I had to do what ALL owners of older,failing/suffering/ sick/injured/freezer-burned pets have to do at some point...
Have a major fit of denial.
THEN, do the right thing--which in this case was to have the husband gently dispose of my old friend, while I looked the other way.

I bet I still have Polaroids of that thing.

love all of them, the one with the cow looks older but who cares, love it.

i love them all, especially the last one.

That last one is the most perfect way to represent a cat ever. Epic win! (The rest are so adorable that I can't think of how to comment.)

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one that sees cakes this cute and thinks there's no way I could CUT into them? It kind of creeps me out to think of slicing into the sweet little giraffe, or the bulldog. They are very cute, and SO well done. Truly works of art.

I love the bulldog and I LOVE the cat in a bag. It reminds me of Maru (Google it if you are not familar - he's wonderful.)

If I had to cut any of these cakes I would cry. They're so beautiful and so adorable, I could never... I-I just could not possibly stick a knife or fork into them. I would feel like a killer.

Arlene said...

Aww all of these cakes are so cute but that lamb one looks like it set off some flowery fire works lol. I loved that cute cat in a bag one. Though the cat seems to be the same size as the bag still very cute.

I know these cakes are all very gorgeous and worth seeing, but aren't there enough "cute" themes on Sunday Sweets? Seems to be the only theme... Would be nice to see other themes of gorgeous cakes! :)

What a collection! Honestly, I didn't think anything could top that little blue tiger (so sweet), but the cat in the bag...!

Love the Sunday Sweets. SO beautiful and cute.

I LOVE the Lions, Tiger and Giraffes one. My kids had those same characters on their cute baby crib bedding! Thanks for the memories of that--from a decade and more ago. They are darling!

Anonymous said...

Arlene - you obviously haven't met my cat GrisGris -no matter the bag or box, she'll either get into it, or she will puzzle over how to at least try.

Since my "Kitteh Gonna Get Ya" was at the competition and thus out in the open air and fluctuating temps for 2 days - there was no way I was going to serve it. Being my first competition cake - I was rather attached to it and could NOT bring myself to throw it away. I even got teary-eyed thinking about it! But a couple of weeks of having it on my table...it let me know it was "time" - WHOOOO!??!!! Gag! Bad smell - made it VERY easy to part with at that point! LOL!

Most of the other cakes on my cakecentral page of photos were for friends' parties and since I was in attendance and noone else could bring themselves to cut - I had to do the honors! I'm like "Y'all - it's a CAKE! Let's EAT!" LOL!
The only ones that weren't eaten were my subsequent competition cakes - the "Dead Man's Mardi" cake (looks like a New Orleans-style above ground tomb w/royal icing skeleton reaching out...) and this years "Oyster on the half shell" cake.
Cheers!
Wendl

That last one is fab, and unlike the others is one that I looked at and thought 'I could actually do one like that' (just maybe, with a lot of time and a dose of luck!!). Love it!

WV: satoehar....wtf???

That Kitteh cake is beyond adorable.

Cassandra said...

I don't know if the baker of the owl cakes was thinking of this when he/she baked them but - my mom and aunts all had these carved wooden owl candle holders from the 1970's and those little owls look Exactly like them! The candle placement is in the exact same spot too. So to me, it made perfect sense.

The cute... it burns!!

I'm not sure which I like the mos... oops, my feline mistress just informed me that the Bag O' Cat is the best one of them all. She also said she'd love to see a cake of PussyFoot kneading Marc Anthony's back (Stars of some Warner Bros Loony Toons)

This is Jacob Taylor's grandmother. I want to thank you for being so kind and generous to contact Jane & arrange for the cakes at Jacob's funeral.
That's only part of the story....There was 1 1/2 cakes left over, which I froze & took with me for Jacob's memorial skydive. He was a member of the ground crew for Team Fastrax. My daughter, myself, my son in law and his sister did a tandem skydive, spreading Jacob's ashes. We enjoyed the cake afterwards. Jacob loved your website.
