Five Awesome Things

Thursday, April 15, 2010

[UPDATE: We have our winners! Grammy of Grammy's Garden and ZekesMom10 of Insane in the Mombrain, please e-mail me with your addresses. Thanks!]

Every now and then, we get comments from readers that go something like this:

"You know that cake you posted today? It wasn't that bad! Sure it was misspelled, and the icing looked like someone had spread it on with their tongue, and there was that feces border and thumb print - oh, and the dead bug was kinda gross. But did you see that rose?! Gorgeous!"

Yeeeeah.

Well today, in honor of our friend Neil over at 1000 Awesome Things and the rest of you positive Pollyannas, we picked out a few Wrecks from our arsenal - and we're going to find something awesome to say about each and every one of them. Even if it kills us. Which, let's be honest, is entirely possible.

Ready?

*pulling up happy pants*

Here we GOOOO!

Hey, it looks just like corn! And corn's a great source of fiber! Cleans you right out! And clean colons are awesome!

Look how artfully arranged the tablecloth is! The folds are so even! So regular! Being regular is also awesome.

Uh...

Noisemakers!

I love noisemakers.

Not that you'd want to put these in your mouth, of course, considering where they've been...but, uh...yeah. Noisemakers are awesome.

Gee, that looks like a really sharp knife! It probably cut right through that hideous scarecrow thing, no sweat! In fact, I bet whoever cuts cheese with that knife doesn't have to strain at all.

Not straining while cutting the cheese? You guessed it: AWESOME.

Alright, now we're on the home stretch! [rubbing hands together] Bring on the final contender!

Oh, crap.

I mean, uh, oooo. Tough one.

Sure, there's a full load of things I could say here, but not many would be what you'd call "awesome." Hmm.

[thinking]

[thinking]

[despairing]

[back to thinking]

Ok, I think I got it:

You tell me.

That's right, tell me what's awesome about this Wreck in the comments. Why? Well, mostly for the glory. But also because you just might win Neil's book:

I've already read it, and believe me, it lives up to its name. And speaking of names, mine's on the back cover. So that's worth the purchase price right there. (Did I mention it's also half off on Amazon right now? Yeah. That helps.)

Now go forth, and comment! Whoever makes me laugh the hardest wins the glory, while two randomly selected commenters will actually win a personalized and signed copy of The Book of Awesome. I'll even have Neil do the personalizing and signing. [waggling eyebrows]

Oh, and Neil is willing to ship anywhere in the world. So Estonia, I'm looking at you.

Chloe, Tosha B., Anony M., Molly C., Jeff H., & Rachel V., go make me proud.

- Related Wreckage: The #2 Way to Ruin a Cake

[John's rule type stuff]
When you comment, be sure to put your name. If your name is something boring like John, be sure to follow it up with something creative like (the hubby of Jen). Or, ya know, your last name. And remember, we're picking two winners at random so if you happen to be painfully unfunny like me, you can still win. Winners will be announced at 2pm (Eastern) on Friday. Finally, if you don't win, you should still buy the book. We could all stand to focus a little more on the awesome in life. Good luck and Wreck On!

UPDATE: We have our winners! (See the top of this post.) Thanks, everyone; your comments have been the best free entertainment I've had all week. ;)

It is shiney, and reflects the light nicely. Also, the light reflection makes the marble underneath it, look super classy...

I don't have anything funny to say, but I'd like a chance to win the book because *I* am awesome!

Hmmm... Maybe it wasn't such a great idea to use my 3rd wish to turn EVERYTHING into chocolate after all. Oh well. Really hammers home the sentiment, "Be careful what you wish for..." And a reinforced proverb - THAT'S pretty awesome.

5 AWESOME THINGS ABOUT THE PILE-O-POO CAKE

oooh ... shiny! Shiny things are awesome!

Brown... I love brown! Brown is awesome!

Marble! Marble is an excellent surface to use for making candy! Candy is awesome!

The icing kinda looks like the ganache they use on eclairs, and eclairs are definitely awesome!

And finally: Chocolate... chocolate is the epitome of awesomeness!

So honestly, that last cake isn't that bad! It is an awesome likeness to the worst diarrhea-heap of... well, you know what! I don't think anyone could produce a cake that looked so positively fluid, and that... is awesome! Imagine the hours it took to create this masterpiece, the blood sweat and tears that went into it. The baker of this brown beauty deserves a bust, a pedestal and his own Hall of Fame!

I wish I had the kind of talent to make a cake like that...

OpinionatedKait said...

It's shiny! Another shiny thing is a diamond! And diamonds are, of course, awesome!

Katrina said...

So, the marble slab is awesom, which many people have noted, but I don't that everyone truly appreciates the little "window" at the bottom so you can see what kind of cake it is. Now THAT takes skill. Try it the next time you dump shellac on a cake and see if you can create such an awesome window on your first try. Yeah, good luck with that.

Look how perfectly shiny and smooth that frosting came out. Someone must do that a regular basis. What a great way to flush out the good frosters from the dumpy ones. I already gave a #1 to a previous cake so I will have to give this one a #2.

First, it's chocolate, and that in and of itself is awesome enough... BUT, and it's a big BUT, if you look at the side, there is what appears to be a little cave entrance, and the only thing that can live in a little chocolate cave would be a little chocolate bear, and perhaps it would be a chocolate covered gummy bear, which sounds kind of icky, but in reality is really really good! Therefore, awesome! :)

How the shiny icing showcases the "one of a kind" shape of this cake (and skills of the baker)and how the icing is defying the laws of physics by not dripping everywhere. That's awesome!!!

If you like a lot of frosting, this would be an awesome cake for you!

The Last Cake is Awesome because I looked at it and the Fir -- No, SECOND! Thing I though was that it looked like an Al-Muddi! And Al-Muddi are Cool!

The ganache is very shiny and smooth, it looks like it came out very easily. Of the piping bag that is.

The decorating area looks really clean! I wish my decorating area looked that clean when I was done making a cake!

It's chocolate.
Enough said.

The shiny cake is parked beside a mirror. The awesome thing about that is people will think there are TWO shiny cakes! AWESOME!!!!

Gone are the days when you had to choose whether you wanted to attract ants OR flies. Now you can attract BOTH with one amazing cake! The ants are lured in by the taste and the flies get excited by the huge poop-pile look. Now that's progress! What will they come out with next? Road-kill CCC, anyone?

Kimberly Collins said...

It's the lighting, that lighting is so bright it flat out melted that beautiful piece of..erh..um...cake? But on the BRIGHT side sure is shiny. @CakeAfide

Mmmm, Chocolate vomit! And everyone knows that ANYTHING covered with chocolate, is AWESOME! And well, if it just happens to be chocolate vomit covered awesome, well, then it's just AWESOME!

If you relax and stare at it intently for several seconds, you can see a mouse sitting on the back of a cow that is jumping over a flying musical note. It's trying to tell us something. Something important. Something beyond our understanding.

The last cake should have been #2.

That .... icing ... is so SHINY. I could see my reflection in it! And I could see if someone was sneaking up behind me with a matching CCC (ptooey!) in the attempt to smear it all over my face!!

And besides who doesn't love chocolate! that's chocolate, right?

Psychocat said...

Well, the sheen proves that yes, you, too CAN polish a turd! Affirmation that one can do the seemingly impossible is AWESOME!

Why can't it just be an awesome pile of steaming poop? If that's what they were going for, they did an awesome job because it looks exactly like a fresh pile of poopies.

I picture the camera zooming in on a teeny Julie Andrews singing "The hills are alive, with the sound of music . . . " Awesome!

I think that last one is actually a brillantly scaled replica of the Cave of the Magestic Coiled Crap Hound. See that little spot on the left side? That's the entrance. Crap Hounds journey back to their cave every spring to frolic in the Font of Feculance and make little Crap Houndlets. So yes, it's really quite excellent.

Since I have one of those dime a dozen names, you can call me PikaJen. :)

Mmm... nice and smooth. If you're going to be creating a pile (of...frosting...) that large, you want it to be smooth. Otherwise, you could end up with a big mess and clog up the situation.

There are already 995 posts before me, so I don't envy their job of having to read every post. That said, here's my positive thought:

That cake decorator was so considerate to make a cake for one of the least thought of creatures in the animal kingdom - the Dung Beetle! I'm sure the dung beetle would be proud to roll pieces of that cake away.

This is a fudgy chocolate manifestation of the famous Japanese Lucky Poo! No kidding! Apparently the symbol for "lucky" in Japanese is very similar to the shortened form of the Japanese word for "poo." This cake is very lucky in Japan! Check out a keychain version of this cake here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/japanfan/9069/?cpg=wnrss&cpg=cj. Seriously, good things are going to happen if you eat this cake!

Look how thoroughly they coated it! They hardly missed any spots!

Well it's obvious that the last cake is awesome because of global warming... or is it climate change now?... well anyway, that cake demonstrates what will happen when the tempurature changes.

And let me tell you, here in Minnesota, where we fully expect to have more snow this year, I can't wait!

Marble makes anything more classy, immediately. Classy has 2 s's, and s's are fun because when you say in a raspy tone, you sound like a snake...which also starts with the letter s.

What other commonly used word starts with s? Sh*t, which is also a synonym for crap.

Letters and words are fun!

Bonus time: Pouring stuff is fun - imagine how much fun they had pouring that icing over that...cake-like..thing!

Bonus #2: Mix together the UPS slogan "What can brown do for you?" and Austin Powers "Who does #2 work for?" and I think the answer is...this cake.

(Also? I named my cat Awesome...so...maybe he needs a copy of a book with his name...in..it...")

It's chocolate! Nothing is more awesome than Chocolate no matter how disgusting it looks. Chocolate can some in handy in many situations. Everyone should have a mound of Chocolate on their marble slab.

It is reminiscent of the somewhat psychadelic animated commercial from when we were kids. "Whatever it is I think I see becomes a Tootsie Roll to me." It's awesome!

That is a lovely piece of marble! It would be perfect for rolling out delicious croissants, and since marble isn't porous it wouldn't retain any of the bleach I would have to soak it in before I'd let food touch it!

That is the shiniest pooorofessional cake ever! I wonder what flavor it is.

Fabulous post by the way. Since I give away and created the Box of Awesome, I should definitely get that matching book.
