Come Meet Jen, Who Often Refers To Herself in the Third Person

Friday, July 31, 2009

I've been hinting around about this on both Facebook and Twitter, and now I'm pleased to say I can finally share with you the details of the coming U.S. Cake Wrecks Book Tour!!

Exactly, Jae K.

Uh, you DID know there's a book, right? Because you've already pre-ordered your copy like a good Wrecky henchperson, right?

Well, even if you haven't purchased a copy I hope you'll come say hello (and then purchase a copy). It's not that I'd mind eating all the cake myself (did I mention there'll be cake?) and doing the Q&A with just John (and that John's coming?), but frankly, Andrews McMeel might. So please, block out these dates on your calenders now, and then buy any necessary plane tickets to get you there, because with today's plethora of transportation options I am NOT accepting "it was too far away" as an excuse. (Hey, if I have to get on a plane...)

Ok, ok, just to sweeten the deal further: How about a contest? And even better, one in which no talent is required and you get to eat the results?

Yes, exactly like this, Christine D. Thanks.
(The original is here.)

Yep, in a nutshell: just make a Wreckplica of your choice...but the catch is, it has to be on a cupcake. This is both to keep the entries a manageable size, and (bonus!) just to screw with you. The crowd favorites will win fabulous prizes, which admittedly I haven't decided on yet, but believe me, they're going to be fabulous.

There will also be cake for everyone (bakers, if you'd like to volunteer your services in your city, let me know), so rest assured you will be leaving with a sugar buzz even if you don't bring an entry - but you still should anyway, so that those of us with icing in our hair don't mock you.

Yeah. Like that.

Ok, now that I have you positively salivating with anticipation, here's the schedule:

Orlando, FL
Borders (Winter Park)
Tuesday, September 22, 5PM
(NOTE: This will be my first public appearance EVER. So let me apologize in advance for doing the entire Q&A with a barf bag strategically placed on my lap.)

Portland, OR
Powell’s Books
Friday, September 25, 7:30 pm

Seattle, WA
Third Place Books
Saturday, September 26 6:30 pm

San Francisco, CA
Copperfield's Books (Petaluma)
Sunday, September 27 2:00 pm

Denver, CO
Tattered Cover Bookstore (Historic LoDo)
Tuesday, September 29 7:30 pm

Chicago, IL
Barnes & Noble (Old Orchard)
Thursday, October 1, 7:30 pm

Dallas, TX
Legacy Books
Saturday, October 3, 2:00 pm

Austin, TX
BookPeople
Sunday, October 4, 3:00 pm

Kansas City, MO
Barnes & Noble (Oak Park)
Monday, October 5, 6:00 pm
(NOTE: Yes, technically this is not in Missouri; it's in Kansas. I think these are listed by the closest major city, if that helps explain it any.)

Bethesda, MD
Barnes & Noble
Tuesday, October 6, 7:00 pm

New York, NY
Barnes & Noble (Greenwich Village)
Wednesday, October 7, 7:30 pm

I should mention that this tour started out with only 5 stops, and has grown to what it is now partly due to your exuberant responses on Facebook. So if you feel that some crime of omission has been committed here, by all means, tell me in the comments.

I'd also like to apologize to my international readers, since as you can see this tour is limited to the U.S. Given my dislike of flying in general - and long flights in particular - I have a hard time feeling TOO bad about this, but I am sorry I won't be able to meet all you lovelies in Australia, the UK, Japan, etc. We may try to stream one of the Q&A sessions online for you, so stay tuned.

And finally, if you think you might join us at one of the venues above, please RSVP - even if it's with a "maybe" - by clicking on the city name. This will help us figure out how much cake, prizes, chairs, etc. to have on hand.

Thanks, guys! I look forward to meeting many of you soon!

UPDATE: WOW. Thanks for the frenzied amount of feedback - I knew I could count on you Wreckies to speak your mind! Just remember that *I* am not the one booking this tour, so no accusing me of hatin' on the southeast/northeast, Ok? And rest assured, the powers-that-be are reading your comments here, so I for one have faith that - no matter what happens - I can always blame the outcome on them. :D

so- ..
with your schedule all out of yer hands and all-
how about a photo- cupcake contest to appease all us bitching in your comment section???

because I am sure pleasing those who complain is high up in the priorities of anyone...

and because I am *pretty* sure we all meant.. 'congratulations on your new book/tour- you deserve all the success in the world for entertaining us wildly all this time...'

I want the first one for my birthday!

Powers-That-Be that are booking events: I just wanted to add to the no love for Southerners and maybe be you to add one more stop. I'm in Alabama, but anywhere in the south (Atlanta is a good middle ground) would be appreciated!!!! We need our Jen fix!

mandi said...

Atlanta, please!!!

I said please, you have to do it.

TeeVeeEll said...

I am so there in Denver... now, to plan the cupcake wreck...

All I could think of with the "bon bon" cake is that those aren't bon bons, they're those nasty chocolate covered cherry cordials. Blech....

Holly said...

Oh Jen, you've got to come to Boston!

Mrs. B said...

You know California is a pretty big state (third largest in the union). Just one stop here isn't enough. If you could do SoCal, I would so be there.

Momma-of-5 said...

Greenwich village is as close as you're getting to me...I've never been, but I might venture out for yoU!

Nic said...

Since you will already be in NYC at the end of the tour, what's 200 miles to BOSTON?!!! Tack it on, pleeeeeeease :)

Timba said...

I would say that GEORGIA has been left out!

How can we get you out Atlanta-way?

Denise said...

Come to Atlanta!!! :) Please?

Fresno! Fresno! Fresno!

It's a super easy stop on the way from San Francisco to L.A.

Valinda said...

What about Vegas??? I might be able to convince my husband that a trip to Southern Cali or Pheonix is in order but he's not going to think I need a trip to Seattle again this year and we aren't headed to Austin until next year. Besides Vegas is always an awesome place to visit (especially in September/October when it's finally cooled down)!

eeyore19 said...

Yay!!! Seattle made the tour! :)

Heather said...

Someone's probably told you but the Kansas City location is at Oak Park MALL. Not at a city/town called Oak Park.

Unknown said...

Louisville, KY is a nice mid-point... I'm just saying.

Katherine said...

I can not believe that you will be in Seattle the only weekend I will be out of here.. My little bro is getting married on Sept. 26th! Do you think he would mind if I skipped the wedding to make you a cupcake???? He is marrying a girl name Jen.. Does that count?? Have fun and enjoy your tour!

I vote for Orange County California! Disneyland is here...and...the beach...and...me. Come on! I can't take my two wild boys on a plane!

WOO HOOO!!!! There's one by me - AND - I'll be home in time for it!! (I changed my St. Croix trip JUST for you, Jen ;) )

OMG I am so glad you are coming to Powells!! Oregon is often overlooked in tours of many kinds, so this is an exciting treat! I will totally be there AND buy a book because it's the least I can do, after all not many things can bring me, my mother and my sister to tears (with laughter) all at the same time.

Love love love,
Jess

YAY!! You're coming to Kansas City! The KC thing confuses some people. We've got Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS. The Missouri River separates the two states and the Metro area. Oak Park (in Overland Park, KS) is a suburb of Kansas City. See, ya learn something new every day! :)

Mesa, Arizona!

I am sorry that you hate long flights, but please consider coming to HAWAII!!!!!!!! Honolulu would love to meet you...

Unknown said...

REALLY? I can understand Austin . . . but your other Texas stop is that city that starts with a "D" that's so far north that it might as well be in Oklahoma (no offense to OK - love ya!)?

Houston is the 4th largest city in the US and we get no cake love?

jelloegg said...

I will definitely try to be there in Petaluma.

Carrietastic said...

There is a good chance I will be there for the one in Skokie, IL. I just wish it wasn't the same night as a rehearsal. In any case, good luck!

Let me subtly hint to your "powers-that-be" that you need to stop in Pittsburgh.
PITTSBURGH! PITTSBURGH! PITTSBURGH! A relatively popular city with much wreckiness to share. Please.

From one fabulous Jen to another:

We want you to come to Baltimore! You've given a lot of laughter and joy to our family. And when I forgot to send my dad a present for his birthday, I sent him a link to your website instead. (He appreciated that very much, in an ironic kind of way.) Baltimore isn't that far from Bethesda!

Ahem.Canada does not require long flights, or if you do it right, any flights from many parts of the US. Any chance of adding Toronto or Montreal to this tour?!
Seriously I think one of those cities, plus Chicago, would be worthwhile additions :-)

Are you kidding powers that be??? Completely ignoring Southern California is a big mistake! California is the most populous state in the union. Los Angeles is the 2nd largest city in the U.S. I personally would vote for a stop in Orange County (centrally located between the Valley and San Diego, close to L.A. but w/o the congestion) check us out at the official state site:

http://www.visitcalifornia.com/AM/Template.

Salt lake City please! I can see that it would fit nicely right in between San Francisco and Denver!

Boston! Oh please, please, please come to Boston.

(You don't even have to fly or drive (if you don't want to). There are express buses that go between NYC and Boston that I've heard good things about (some show movies; many have WiFi), or there's the high speed Amtrak trains).

Boston is a great book reading town! (If your publisher wants to add this, they may want to consider doing both Cambridge and Boston - Cambridge is sooooo perfect for your audience. I know the Harvard book store has some author talks and signing events in some of the Harvard buildings - maybe you could work something out with them??? That would be a great venue.

I would like to add one more vote for Boston! It really is close to NYC and your fans here would make sure it's a great time!!

We have a store full of bakers & we often partner with a local cupcake bakery (Let Them Eat Cupcakes) right down the street.

We are about 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia (a few hours drive from NYC). If you are interested, you (or anyone in your planning posse) can contact us at doylestownbooks@aol.com or 215.230.7610, and our events coordinator will be in touch. Hope to hear from you!!

Aw man...I live in Orlando, but sadly I don't get off work until 6pm and I live about half an hour away from Winter Park. How long is the event to last? I'd really like to come if possible as this is definitely in my top 3 favorite blogs! :)

Ooh! Ooh! OOH!!!! powers that be, please, please, please, pleeeeeaaaaasssssseeeeeeeeeeee! book an eventaround the Atlanta area! Since I'm only in my fledgling teen years, I can't go to Florida to meet the wonderfully sadistic Miss Jen... *gives best puppy eyes* To every other city on the tour- have fun and brace yourself for the awesomeness! *laughing*
WV-betsou...I betsou the powers that be will take pity on my lack of a driving liscence! (pretty please!)

Wow. Cool. I can't wait to get the book. Surprised you won't be hitting the Book Revue, in Huntington, Long Island, NY. It's an old-fashioned book store that is a tour-stop for many big-time releases. If you add this to the tour, I'll volunteer some extra wreckage.

Ok. I live in Allentown PA... We have lovely book stores here in the Valley that would enjoy your company... B&N at the Promenade Shops... very nice!! COME PLEASE!!! Baring that how about Philly??

I would love to come, but if you ain't getting on a plane for me, I ain't getting on one for you! :) Besides, my cupcake would definitely suffer after a 22-hour flight to the US! Thanks for the offer of an online version - that would be great!!! I'm sure you have many fans outside the US who will be eternally grateful! I'm attempting to buy your book - but can't find it here in South Aus! I'm trying, honestly! :) Jessie

Kansas City is actually in two states...The city is in a sense cut in two. And Oak Park...that is in Overland Park, technically.

Regardless...*JUMPS FOR JOY!!!**** I will sooooo be there...Kid in tow and all :D

Come to Pittsburgh! We NEEEEEEEEEEED you in Pittsburgh!

ARGH! I was hoping Arizona would be included in this tour. I would LOVE to see you here in AZ!

Meaning: Please, please, PLEASE come to Phoenix! PLEASE!

Atlanta?

Hey, what about the Southwest....Phoenix may be to hot right now for cake decorating (I mean I can only have so much air conditioning in my house!) but come October we'll be a wonderful place to be, and by December/January when the East Coast is inaccessible by car, plane or train, we'll be outside in shorts running to the nearest bookstore to meet Jen. Or at least I WOULD if she were going be here.

JEN!!! If you added one day to your tour and made that stop St. Louis, I would get to see you ON MY BIRTHDAY!!!! I think it is fate!!!

Hey, Jen, Petaluma is about an hour drive north from San Francisco. I hope you're not pressed for time between de-planing and being ready for the signing. :)

Actually, instead of Boston (total NIGHTMARE for drivers) perhaps central Massachusetts so we can lure all of your fans from Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island & New Hampshire! WOO-HOO! Then even I could go!

What's with the lack of SoCal love? ... We've got a disproportionate amount of the state population, we deserve some wrecky lovin'!

Victoria/Vancouver isn't far away from Seattle!

You should most definitely come to Green Bay, Wisconsin. What's not to love about here? We've got cheese, and cows, and......cheese!!!

ARGH! NO WAY! I'm just now seeing this ... and I just moved a couple of months ago away from Maryland to BFE Mississippi. I lived TWO BLOCKS from the Bethesda Barnes and Noble. I'm so disappointed! Well, when you get to Bethesda, count your crowd as one more because I would have been there if I actually still lived there.

How about Indy? We love cake too! Best of luck with the tour!
