Happy Day, Earth!
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Anyhoo, I promised you lovely twits on Twitter that we would extend the celebration here on Wrecks and have a whole Earth Week. So that's what we're doing. [putting on green & purple party hat & blowing on noise maker] Yay, Earth!
Now, where's the cake?
What? I was supposed to bring it? Oh, I see how it is: I've got to do everything around here, don't I? [rummaging through photos] Fine. I'm sure I can find an Earth cake in here somewhere...
Ah! Here we go:
Umm, no, wait... Sorry, that's apparently an attempt at a Spaceship Earth cake. Or a big fuzzy golf ball. Totally different.
UPDATE: To the scores of you telling me this is supposed to be Disney's Epcot Center: Um, yeah, I know. See, the ball at Epcot is called Spaceship Earth, NOT Epcot. Give a Diz Geek a little credit, eh?
[returns to rummaging] Let's see...Earth cakes...Earth cakes...
Well, that's more of an earthquake. Although it's nice how the Wreckerator added that bridge in to span the gap. In fact, I think it fits right in with the triple-cloned Mickey, Pocahontas, matchbox cars, roses and palm trees, don't you?
Moving on...How about some earth movers?
See, since "earth" is also another word for "dirt", this actually makes perfect sense.
Although I must say, they're getting quite generous with the cake toys these days, aren't they? Just look at the size of those things! Pretty soon they're going to start slapping Big Wheels on cakes and calling it a day. (No, I don't know why they'll call Big Wheels on cakes "a day", but trust me, they will.)
Here's my favorite - and probably the most appropriate - Earth Day confection, though:
The message couldn't be more clear: Recycle, or die in a fiery mushroom cloud. Now that's how you teach the younger generations, my friends.
Glitter, Katie T., & Quenby S., have you hugged a tree yet today? And if not, may I recommend this one?
*This joke (and yes, it is a joke) was shamelessly ripped off of Matt Barnette. Thanks, Matt!)

What's a Wreck?
What's a Wreck?
A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.
Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Where's the book?
We don’t have any copies of Cake Wrecks for sale here, autographed or otherwise. We decided the shipping and handling costs would be too high to make it worth your while. So instead, buy your copies locally or online and then order personalized bookplates: it’s cheaper, easier, and I think even looks a bit nicer.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 260 of 260 Newer› Newest»Holy McMoly I can't believe how many people are quick to correct people about the "Epcot Center" thing! Wow. Seriously, if you don't actually KNOW that is Spaceship Earth, you probably shouldn't go around telling people what it's not!! Man.
Quick quiz all you Epcot Center junkies--what does Epcot stand for? What IS that ball? What's inside of it? What's in the rest of the park anyway? IS there a park behind the ball? I thought it was just a statue. Seriously, have you BEEN there? Well, I guess you have, since you know the font and all . . .
I just find it funny that so many people were willing to correct Jen when she CLEARLY (through the use of proper capitalization) indicated that "Spaceship Earth" was the name of the object in question.
I'll be honest, if you asked me what that thing was, I'd have no idea. I'm not a Diz geek like that. But in the context of the entry, I immediately recalled that the sphere was the ride Spaceship Earth.
Maybe you need to do a Sunday Sweets about Disney Attractions (are there very many Disney Attractions to be found in cake?) and properly identify them for all those who are not Diz geeks :)
Moral: Jen is always right! Never doubt!! (I guess your humor is sometimes too subtle for some.)
Jen, can you please tell me how you made the 3 support pillars/blocks for the Spaceship Earth cake? were those cake, too? I'd love to make this sometime, it's awesome and I know someone that would love, love, love it!
I loved the Spaceship Earth reference Jen! Very clever of you when you were lacking in proper Earthday cakes! The Earthquake one and the "mushroom cloud" one almost had me rolling on the floor here at work! =)
Your blog is awesome, and you are hilarious! Please come back to us on Thursday! And bring John too, you two crack me up! =)
Omg, I like, cannot beLIEVE that you and everyone else didn't like, recognize the Epcot Center. Like, OMG! Like, am I the only one who like, knew that? OMG!
(Yea people. She knows. We know. She knew from the beginning....)
Jen, if it makes you feel any better, it took me FOREVER to figure out that the cake was supposed to be Spaceship Earth. I think the fuzzy golf ball theory is much more accurate. Especially if you add that the golf ball has chunky white legs.
Love your blog! It is the one site I have to check every day (even more than Facebook)! You're addictive.
The Spaceship Earth cake is awesome, Jen. Even when Duff on Ace of Cakes made a "round" cake, only the top half was cake. Great job! (Please come back tomorrow!)
Just in case you weren't sure, I think that first cake is meant to be Epcot from Disney World....OH WAIT, sorry, 200 people before me have already said that......Let it rest people, Jen does a freaking awesome job of this blog!!
Wow.... 23 "Epcot" comments before one person finally called it "Spaceship Earth". And I'm not even that much of a Disney geek. Don't let the h8rz get you down, Jen ;)
people
i have BEEN on SPACESHIP EARTH 3 times
it is not the EPCOT CENTER
it is SPCESHIP EARTH
i am even more disapointed in the fact that you cant even use google right *tsk tsk*
Jen, I read your blog everyday and want to say that you do a great job. So thanks for my morning giggles...although...the spit takes with my morning coffee ARE beginning to cause irreparable harm to my laptop...but I digress.
I usually don't take the time to scroll through the comments, but these were HIGHLY entertaining! I got quite the giggle over the post; and then just sat here with my mouth agape whilst I read the comments of some pretty uptight, reactionary, attacking, back-pedaling people.
Who the heck knew that "E" (I'll just call it "E") *nodding head*...was so controversial!!!!???
Keep up the good work!
OK, so, to um, add to the Epcot madness:
I didn't realize that there was more to Epcot than Spaceship Earth until I went to Disney World when I was nine. Before then I visualized people walking around inside the giant dome. So I can see how that would be an easy mistake to make - EVERY photo of Epcot has the giant dome in it.
I also didn't know it isn't called Epcot Center anymore. I will probably still call it that even though I know better now. Why? Because I haven't been there since I was nine(I'm now almost 28). All of you 'I work there, I live near there, I visit all the time, why don't you guys know this simple fact' people should realize that most of the rest of the world only goes maybe two or three times in their lives, and it's easy to lose track of the constant changes. Heck, they've added an entire park since then, and apparently changed the names of two others.
Also, to the person who asked: Epcot is part of Disney World. Disney World is made up of all the parks, plus a lot of other attractions, resorts, and undeveloped land. You might be confusing the Magic Kingdom with Disneyland, they're pretty similar.
And I loved the pun. Maybe Earth Day will catch on as a cake giving holiday so you can have more to choose from in the future. :)
You and your blog are awesome Jen! I agree with Shana, all these people who pointed out that 'ummmm...that's Epcot Center, don't you see the writing, might wanna fix that' to YOU of all people are "special snowflakes"! lol
Jen, I just wanted to say how sad I am noone got your Spaceship Earth joke beforehand! Anybody with a Mickey Munny would know that that is Disney and what it is! Can't believe anyone doubted your skills :) LOVE IT!
I'm so sorry to add one more comment, but I just had to.
To everyone who was enthralled by how awesome Jen did the Disney font..uh, it's a font you can get on your computer just like Arial and Times New Roman. She printed that off people, she didn't hand write it.
She did however, make that cake, which stuns me in the fact that it makes my hand hurt for all that piping and that it's cake on the top and the bottom.
We love you Jen. Please ignore the idiots and keep on posting!
Ok, one more post, then that's it. To everyone who thought the Recycle cake was a recycled St. Patty's Day cake, uh, no. The "tree/cloud" only has 5 half circles. In order to be from St. Paddy's Day, it'd need either 6 or eight. Or maybe it was a WREAKY St. Paddy's Day cake because of that and that's why it never sold. Ew. Recycling a cake from March. Yuck. Oh, and I totally thought of number 2 when I saw this cake said Recycle. In one end and out the other. Hope that's not gross enough to keep me moderated. :)
Good lord, I can't believe how many idiots are going off about the Epcot thing, lmao! They just totally missed the whole point there.
Hope you'll be back delighting us with more wrecks and humor soon!
Pardon the schmucks, plenty of people out there still "get" you!
The first cake is, as Jen stated, Spaceship Earth, which is in Disney's EPCOT park. If you follow the Wikipedia link posted by Inukosama, you will see a picture on the right stating that the globe, called Spaceship Earth, is the icon of EPCOT. Their Cinderella Castle if you will.
Just one suggestion to anyone thinking of adding a comment to a public forum. It's just a small, slight suggestion, but probably worth keeping in mind:
Read the previous posts.
I know reading isn't 'done' these days, but still...
I just read all 222 comments posted as of this minute. Who knew that so many people would care to "correct" you or correct the previous "corrections". Too freaking funny! As someone who hasn't been to Disney World since the Magic Kingdom was first built and still sometimes refers to MK as DW, I did learn a lot. The number of people who need to get a life is frightening...please, people, don't have a heart attack at the above revelation about my misuse of the Disney World moniker.
Great job on Spaceship Earth and the post. Loved it!
More cheers for Sleepover Friends!
I can't believe that such a great reference got drowned in all this Epcot fuss! I also thought about Sleepover Friends the instant I saw the earthquake cake! I was almost disappointed the shop hadn't tried to save it with plastic dinosaurs and volcanoes.
I finally found which silly Sleepover Friends book had the cracked dinosaur cake:
Sleepover Friends #7 - Stephanie Strikes Back"They bake a cake for Patti’s brother’s birthday, but Lauren screws up the recipe and it bakes with a huge crack down the middle. So they make it a dinosaur landscape with volcanoes and stuff."
Fear geologists
with cake! Seismologists, why
knowingly wrecks sweets?
WV: dracer. Hand me another pencil; dracer's gone on this one.
The last one looks like they "recycled" a St. Patty's Day cake. I hope not though because that would be pretty old and stale.
I READ THEM ALL!!!!bwaahahaha(insane laughter)
cc
So you can safely assume most of your readers are idiots who don't Google search before they run their mouths. Nicely done, 100+ of you.
...that's a cute fuzzy Spaceship Earth, though, I will say.
Soooo, if twenty-bajillion people hadn't already, I would have probably said something along the lines of "Oh! Oh! The first cake is the big giant globe/ride/landmark thingy from Epcot at Disney!" Until I went back and read your little update note saying the ride is called "Spaceship Earth" I couldn't remember that. ^__^ See, my family just calls it the "Giant Golf Ball," so I never remember the real name.
And the "Firey mushroom cloud?" Brilliant.
PS: The little note on the first cake from the 4/24 post with the whole "EXTERMINATE" bit, nearly caused me to blurt it out in the middle of class. Which would have been embarrassing.
The Epcot cake looks like a big ball of mould:P
I prefer to keep my innocence and believe that Jen did the Disney writing in icing all by herself. I believe she could do anything she put her mind to. So a pox on you 'she printed out the font' people!
I don't personally have any pics of Earth Day cakes. I did however do a Google Image search and found a few pics. Hurray, for Google! I don't know that they qualify as cake wrecks, though. Happy Belated Earth Day. LOL
'Batteries in the lake.'
HAW!!
OOO, I wish this was last friday so I could have the Spaceship Earth cake virtually for my birthday! It is mine and my daughter's favorite ride in EPCOT.
Ok, so I haven't read all 235 comments, so I don't know if anyone reported this yet but I just found this wikipedia article on the "Spaceship Earth" at "Epcot"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceship_Earth_(Disney)
You were correct Jen, it is a spaceship earth cake, Cheers to you!
I'm pretty sure the first cake is round and frosted.
Did you know that Epcot isn't called Epcot anymore? It was bought by Universal Studios last week. They decided they will use the *geodesic sphere* to house a Shrek ride and rename the building "WHO CARES" because: seriously folks.
Why is everyone so upset? I know people get all touchy about Disney but it's a cake. Probably a tasty cake. Nice job. YUM.
Only a fool or someone who has never stepped foot onto Disney property would attempt to 'correct' a person who had accurately identified Spaceship Earth.
Ahhh, Spaceship Earth.
Brings back many happy memories of our trip to Disney World in 1988. Of course, half of the things I remember about it are no longer there...sigh.
I can't believe how unbelievably stupid people are to post links to correct you but NOT READ THE LINKS THEMSELVES! Or for so many to jump to correct you without reading the comments first to see that others MAY have already done so. I'm sure by the time you approved some others were still doing it.
By the way you did a beautiful job on that cake. A cake any Disney fan would die for. I love the font too. It's perefect. :o)
ok seriously people? do you read any comments before posting your own? there are at LEAST 150 comments telling jen that the fisrt one is epcot center. which, if you don't want to be specific, is entirely true. However, if you spend your life as a disney fanatic you soon learn that the globe in the epcot center is, as a matter of fact, called Spaceship Earth. I don't think it really deserved to be on the site, but it is rather furry looking. I bet it'd make a great pet. That mushroom one is so great. *tear*
okay, i know you've said it in your comments, but since they've been so nice in giving you links to EPCOT Center pictures, here's another one for them :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceship_Earth_(Disney)
or, on the wikipedia EPCOT link, the caption to the picture is "Spaceship Earth is the icon of Epcot"
Oh the first cake: that offends me a bit since Epcot is my favorite Disney park, but heck, I digress! Too bad the wreck was baked and decorated over 26 years post-EpCake, a cake celebrating Epcot's opening on October 1, 1982, on WDW's 11th birthday!
Oh, and Cami, while Epcot originally stands for Exponential Prototype Community of Tomorrow, my acronym would be Eager Pernambucanos Come on Tour, referring to what I call turismos. Turismo is both Spanish and Portuguese for tourism, and Pernambuco is a state in Brazil, so I'm using this to refer to all the groups of teens guided by flag-bearing adults from South America, including your (dare I say it) Brazilian tour groups!
My husband and I were talking about this post today, and we have decided to name such phenomena 'Epcotdemics.'
The cake looked great. Even to this day, we're having trouble imagining an undertaking like that.
In the cake, and in the posts, we admire your tenacity and perseverance.
vw - endioil: Wind FTW
Oh, it just gets better and better, doesn't it?
Nice blog ! I like it...
Sorry, I just can't help myself...
Did you realize that the first cake is suppesed to be that ball thingy at Epcot center?
Hey, everyone else did it... why not me?
This is just proof that people are much more interested in getting their own comments in rather than reading anyone elses.
I however, appreciate the humor in which your wrecks are presented and described. People need to get a grip, have a sense of humor, and if you want to comment, be willing to read other's comments.
*Whimper*
After reading through ALL of these comments to see what the infamous "Spaceship Earth" thing was about, I have to say that I now hate, detest and LOATHE the word Ep... Ep... Can't type it. Too painful. The E word.
And now I have a headache.
Okay. Followed your instructions, and read this "fallout" post (double pun).
Funny, I don't feel "caught up, clued in, and part of the "in" crowd."
Hey, you promised!
Oh man, I made it past 200 comments, just to make sure I wouldn't be the 199th one to say this. But I think I figured out the earthquake one - connecting it to earth day - they were recycling the decorations, to save the planet. There were go!
-Natalie O.
I am curious about 2 things
1) What's Sleepover Friends?
2) I noticed that at the end of a bunch of comments there's this: wv- with a wierd word and a definition
What does the 'wv' stand for and what's 'FTW'?
These are the things that keep me up at night.
By the way, the 'batteries in the lake' joke cracks me up every time I read it.
I really appreciate that I don't have to read through a bunch of smut every time I look at comments here. Thank you for taking that on because I know that must kind of eat at you and get very exhausting very quickly. My family and I sit together and check the wrecks each night before bed. It's our silly thought before prayers.
Tjis is so rolf
Cakewrecks is arguably by favorite thing to read. At least, its definitely my favorite thing on the internet (possibly outside the internet though, I love books). So while being sad that I had no new posts to read, I went through the FAQs. and reread this post. And read all the comments. which took a very long time.
The only thing I have to say is that the Spaceship Earth cake is awesome! I wish *my* cakes came out that well!
totally jealous of your superior caking skills Jen!
you Rock!
Also, I love the mushroom cloud cake: I totally agree, it would make an awesome shirt :)
Keep making us smile/laugh/die/have unexplainable fits laugh-dying that make everyone near by worry about us :D
Must be the Epcot ball..surely? Must be quite difficult to make that?! xx
Actually, I think the first one is supposed to be Epcot.
i came across your blog through a link on facebook and started checking it out and i couldnt help but laugh at how many people corrected you about spaceship earth. im from florida and have been there a bunch and i love that ride....so i knew exactly what you were talking about. spaceship earth rocks!
i came across your blog through a link on facebook and started checking it out and i couldnt help but laugh at how many people corrected you about spaceship earth. im from florida and have been there a bunch and i love that ride....so i knew exactly what you were talking about. spaceship earth rocks!
I really like the Spaceship Earth cake and don't see what's a wreck about it. Looks just like the real thing to me.
Don't think anyone's said so yet, but the ball thing...
It's a ping-pong ball on a few bricks. You know, like the big one at Epcot. It's called Jefferson Starship.
Walt Disney was big into guitars and ping-pong. And kangaroos.
Hey, isn't that first one Epcot at Disneyland? I think Disney used to own it.
See? It has Disney writing under it. The same way that one guy who started the company always wrote.
uhh nope. pretty sure this shiz is epcot. center. oh it hasn't been called that for a long time. it's EPCOT. DONT YOU LOVE DISNEY. oh. you mean the golf ball isn't called an epcot? WAIT, there is a RIDE inside the ball? mind. blown.
clearly all you "disney lovers" have never actually taken the time to ride space ship earth. you probably just head to soarin to wait in line for 3 hours. yeah, that sounds right.
love the cake! i'll have to try to reproduce this:)
I actually like the spaceship earth cake. It's not so bad
So I'm pretty sure the first cake is supposed to be the Epcot ball... see the Disney writing under it??? Lol you might wanna correct that there ;)
It's actually not that bad of a cake if you realize what it is (Epcot, not the earth or whatever), it shouldn't really be a wreck!
