My husband took one look at this and declared it the least appetizing cake he'd ever seen. Bingo! Today's post!

Ok, granted, that may be how "Clare" spells her name, and the other spelling error may be intentional (though I couldn't hazard a guess as to why...), but we cannot ignore the brown dripping goo with the pink roses - we just can't. In the words of my hubby, "Blech-ag-ack".

Oh, and I love the huge kitchen knife waiting in the wings - you can almost hear Mr. Black Shoes saying "Take the picture, will ya? I'm hungry!".

I can't believe you forgot to mention how the "L" in "Late" definitely started out as a "2" as in "28th" and then decided to get creative. Don't you think?

Can I please point out that in the same comment where you were drawing attention to the misspelling of "tu" and, perhaps, "Clare", you also misspelled the word "here"? (Should have been "hear".)

Anyway, who's to say this isn't a crème brûlée "cake"? It might almost think about looking appealing. But then there's all that icing....

I'm just amazed it took a solid month and who-knows-how-many readers to catch my spelling error, Chris. (No, I'm not trying to say it was intentional - that was a definite flub, so thanks for the correction.)

I'll grant you your unspoken point that no one is grammatically perfect at all times, but I still maintain that errors done in icing are less excusable; a single sentence using all common words should not stretch a "professional's" vocab skills.

And, creme brulee? With all that icing? Ew, I hope not.

Is the cake on the floor? There's what seems to a bench in the top left then the tip of a shoe on the bottom right. (Not to mention what looks to be a kids shoe to the bottom left)

Who cuts a cake on the floor? Who puts a cake on the floor?

Many Irish people use the spelling Clare after the county, and not the French name Claire

Clare is also a saint, and more common in italy. Claire is the more modern spelling, popularised by the french, but both are entirely correct.

That "frosting" looks like diluted barbecue sauce. Yuck!

That knife is definitely going in for the kill - but can you imagine the angle in which the knife-holder must be sitting?? (lying? kneeling?)

I think the worst part is how it appears it has been doused in hoisin or barbecue sauce. The brown icing is a strange gooey-translucent texture...

The only thing I thought of when I saw "to" spelled as "tu" is, Oh, that poor underpaid hispanic worker. :/ ("Tu" is the Spanish word for "you." Yay quotes!)

I don't think the "Late" was creativity. I think it went something like this:
Customer: "28th"
Order-taker: "What?"
Customer: "Two Eight" (Translated as "2 ate" then made into "Late")

looks to me like a regular cake covered in whipped cream icing
the brown stuff on top is chocolate ganache

that ugly coloring comes from when the ganache is too hot... melting the whipped cream and voila... instant yucky mess

hoisin sauce cake? that's. bloody. BRILLIANT! a nice salty, savory fish cake with creamy, thick icing and lovely sardines in the middle! brilliant! i honestly want to try some right now!

I think that's flan, actually, which would explain the sauce (which should be caramel sauce). And if it is flan, then that might also explain the "tu", though even translated from Spanish, it still doesn't make any sense ("you be exact"?). Either way, even if it's flan, it's ugly.

Did no one notice the accent mark over the "a" in Late. Maybe the Spanish speaking assumption is correct.

My best guess is that the icing is supposed to be coffee and that they spelled latte wrong.....at least they tried....

I used to decorate cakes at Albertson's and...in trying to dissect this monstrosity, I think I may know what's wrong with it.

At first, I thought someone had ordered a cake enrobed in caramel instead of the fudge that is generally used for enrobed cakes. But, upon further investigation of this picture, I realized that that is a Snickers cake gone horrible wrong.

Snickers cakes are just chocolate cake with caramel whipped icing. You put a shell border an inch or so away from the edge and then pour on some melted caramel to drip down the sides. It looks like someone (either the decorator or the customer) got a little caramel happy and decided to top the entire cake with it.

Ew.

im not trying to be racist but as a proud mexican i can sadly say that is probably the work of one of my people. or at least definitely latin american. we're suckers for the quotations and the "tu" is a dead giveaway. hahahah its still funny and grotesque. ay ay ay!

I think the sad "burnt orange" color of the cake, combined with "TU" means this cake is some kind of reference or jab at a University of Texas student. Aggies call UT, "TU" and burnt orange is UT's color.

My theory is thus:
The cake was ordered for a UT student by someone who loves them but doesn't love UT.

It was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

My best friend Clare spells her name that way. If I'm not mistaken it is the original spelling actually.
