Ah, Mother's Day. A day when we honor our moms for all they've done for us. However, it turns out there aren't many cakes celebrating last-minute dashes to the ER, or working the night shift, or talking us out of shaving our heads that time in high school. So instead, lets remind Mom of the
cuter side of Mom-hood: the baby shower.
(Because I
said so, that's why. And you have to look at
every picture before you leave this blog, young lady, so don't make me come over there!)
Let's start with some good clean fun:
Submitted by Laura R. and made by Sabrina R.Bubble, bubble, bath time is ador-
able! And as a former faux painter, I'm digging the woodgrain on the tub.
This next one may be hard to swallow...
Submitted by Joan D. and spotted at Chelsea Market...'cuz that stack of diapers is really a
cake. (I know, right?!) I'd love to see how it's made.
Here's a classic nursery rhyme, come to cake:
Made by CW reader Jean D. The baby is rockin' in a tree top! How cool is that?
And check out the little details:
Carved initials and tiny roses
for the win.
Here's one made of sugar and spice(cake?) and everything nice:
It's amazing how that little bit of shine on the shoes makes them so much more realistic. Plus, look at the quilting on the cake board! Such a great touch.
What's that? You want to see some adorable hand-painted baby clothes?
Your wish = my command.
Forgive me for saying so, but this one here is cute as a button:
By abbietabbieAnd did you see the little feet on the bottom?
No?
HYPERZOOM!
They're even wrinkly and stuff! Sooo cute!
Everybody knows a good baby shower cake needs the proper accessories:
By Charmaine's Pastry Blog
Our friend Julianne (aka
Ninja Baby's mom) tells me the muppet-like baby booties are actually a Chinese style. Why don't we have such adorable footwear here in the States? And, you know, in
my size?
Next a beautiful baby's bag:
...and, um, quite quaint quilts!
("q" words are hard)
That itty-bitty choo-choo train just made tracks to my heart.
And finally, a carriage cake made pretty in pink:
So delicate and sweet! And the butterfly on the handle is a great touch.
Before I close, I'd like to say that we here at CW know there are lots of different types of moms out there, and that these baby shower cakes might not apply to all of you. Maybe you adopted a toddler. Maybe you're a foster parent. Maybe you're a single dad who's had to be both parents to your little ones. Bottom line: there are endless variations of "Mom" out there, but regardless of your circumstances, today is for all of you. Happy Mother's Day!

OMG those are so cute they made me squeee :D
I LOVE the lullaby cake! :c D
Those are absolutely adorable.
Oh, so lovely!
The gifts of people who can do something like this never ceases to amaze me.
Thanks to the Cake Wrecks crew and the submitters for finding and sharing them!
Off to pamper my Mom . . .
A friend of mine wished me a Happy Mother's Day as a "furbaby" mama, which made me laugh. I have a kitty that's pretty much a big baby, but then I also have a husband and a male roommate, so I'm like a mom 3 different ways. I don't have any "real" kids of my own yet, but I'm happy with the ones I have. Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms of all kinds out there!
I am AMAZED by these cakes...although my husband's first comment on the super-cute diaper cake was, "I hope the cake wasn't chocolate."
Why are you a "former" faux painter?
So sweet! A lovely start to the day. Thank you!
I can't stop oowing and aahing. SO CUTE
@ Middle Kid - Two reasons, really: the poor economy (no one could afford it anymore) and CW's success. John and I gradually transitioned from our faux company into being full-time bloggers. Quite the switch, huh?
Omigoodness.....I <3 the diaper bag! And I second the previous poster...the talent of some people just absolutely amazes me.
These are great, but isn't it Mother's Day? Where are the cakes about the moms? These are about the babies.
The prologue made me laugh (enough that I read it to my husband!) and the epilogue made me a little weepy, and I -am- a "traditional" mom. Thanks for today's post!
"Why don't we have such adorable footwear here in the States?"
Maybe because we don't bind girls' feet here in the States.
(Yes, I know they don't do that in China anymore, but I think those shoes are from the old days of bound feet. Just look at the shape.)
Such amazing cakes! I'm dog mom to 2 furbabies and I'm just thankful they didn't leave me any "gifts" in the living room this year.
C'mon Gary,
They're baby shoes. Sheesh.
john
Long time reader, first time poster. Having read Gary's comment re: the baby shoes, I just had to write something. Then I saw John's response. John - my thoughts exactly. Some people, unfortunatley, just can't seem to help themselves,. It's like a compulsion to be vile no matter the subjet matter.
I usually find one of the Sunday Sweets not to my liking (too weird, too techno, to0 crooked), but I love every one of these. To quote Charlie Sheen, "Winning!!".
FurrMom of Snowflake
Gary,
I'm something of an armchair expert on historical China, and I have to agree with John (the hubby of Jen). Even when they bound girls' feet, they didn't start binding until the girls were about five or six. Babies were completely left alone. Those are babies' shoes, and the basic design of such have remained the same for centuries.
Very sweet sweets today - and thank you for the comments on the variations of "mom." :)
Hyperzoom? Or..... EXTREME CLOSE UP!!!!!! WHAAAAAAA!!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys are so sweet. Thank you for this post!
Thanks for mentioning single dad's. A couple of years ago, my twin daughters celebrated MomDad day for me...it was one my favorite events.
The last one is my favourite!! So cute :)
NICE stuff for a change. Sweet!
Our associate preacher, after reminding us of the faux-pas he's made over the years ("will the oldest mother please stand up" "Will the youngest mother please stand up?" to which a wag called back "youngest now or youngest when they had their first child?") just said "everyone who has or has had a mother, please stand up." Much laughter, we were ready for the hymn, and no one took offense.
So . . . to everyone who has mothered anyone or anything over the years, Happy Mothers' Day.
The diaper cake is good turnabout for all the 'cakes' made from diapers that are such popular baby shower fodder. Take that, lame diaper towers. Your $4.50 worth of diapers isn't impressing anyone.
Thanks for reminding us that it is possible to have a beautiful baby shower cake.
I want the quilty cake when i have a baby shower its so cute
I love these cakes! So adorable. But I have to agree with the poster asking where the cakes about the moms are. Fathers day cakes are all about the dads and their hobbies, but mothers day cakes are all about the baby? It hardly seems fair.
Oh my gosh, the last part...I almost cried. So sweet!
maybe it was a quite quafty quilt :D
I live in China . . . can't say I've seen those shoes in my part of the country (Northwest). I can say, though, that my daughter had some similar to them when we lived in the US. We called them "Muffin Shoes!"
Too cute!
"...However, it turns out there aren't many cakes celebrating last-minute dashes to the ER, or working the night shift, or talking us out of shaving our heads that time in high school. So instead, lets remind Mom of the cuter side of Mom-hood: the baby shower."
I think some people are still just reading the pictures!
And as to why there is a dearth {lack ;-} of Mother's Day cakes, I suppose motherhood is too hard to catch in a cake... like Jen says in the cut and pasted paragraph above. We are just too complicated!
OMG! How does anybody even cut into those? And the cookies! THE COOKIES!!
those cakes are amazing!
Yep. You can't depict all of Momhood on a cake. And apparently, when you try, people berate you for not doing it their way.
As a mother who feels extremely blessed to have been able to have borne healthy babies, I have to say a couple of things. First, thanks for pointing out that motherhood is multifaceted and impossible to completely describe. It's the caretaking of small and helpless beings that makes a person a mother. And second, I enjoyed these a lot. Show me a mother who *doesn't* get all gooey over a baby shower cake, and I'll show you a woman who's probably brain-dead from lack of slee -
... okay, bad example.
Anyway, these are squeeworthy and awwwwwsome. Thanks.
Hey Janine - you can't be a mother (aside from adopting) without having a baby at some point. So these cakes still ring true for mothers day.
Ahh these are some beautiful cakes. I may not be a mom right now but these sure make me want the cakes at least lol.
Karen, I saw that, too, so I wasn't just reading the pictures. I simply find it hard to believe that no one makes, say, horseback riding or quilting cakes and slaps "Happy Mothers Day!" on them the way they do with golf or tool themed cakes for dads. Come to think of it, my mother would have loved a tool themed cake for Mothers day . . . I love the ideas this blog gives me. :)
my 9 year old daughter squealed in delight over these cakes, lol
Aww, your final words were the sweetest part of this Sunday Sweets. Thank you for being so aware and understanding, you guys ROCK!
Also, I would be really sad if I got such an amazing cake; how could I possibly cut it? And if I don't cut it, how can I EAT it?! ;)
I am envious of the piping on the baby-cookies, those letters are more elegant than I could ever calligraph.

How do people pay a million dollars for a cake like that and then EAT IT????
Found you from The Cape on the Corner. Love you cakes mistakes and the pretty ones too.
I'm following you.
Citymom
Love those crazy mistakes! Heck, I just love love cakes. The baby ones are gorgeous.
I'm definitely following you.
Citymom
That quilt cake is one of the best I've ever seen. LOVE IT!
Those are cute, and yes, tiny roses and initials for the win!
I also need more sleep because I misread "carriage" as "carnage."
The Rockabye-Baby cake was just AWESOME, but I'd be sorry to cut into any of these!
Thanks a lot for adding my cake and all these ammazing cakes!! Happy mother's day to all mothers...
Fantasticakes (Cecile)
Piped CALLIGRAPHY on those cookies? With line weight and everything? What is this madness??!
Loved all of the little touches, like the tiny Rubber Duckies...
But the baby shoes screamed Olive Oil from the Popeye cartoon. Just looked like something she would have worn..and the same colors too!
The diaper bag cake is mine! Thanks for posting! Cakes by Jen
Hi Jen and John! I was able to spend some time with my adult daughter yesterday, so I didn't make my Sunday visit to CW. The cakes are gorgeous. I especially loved the nursery rhyme cake and the fact that it was made by an amateur (semi-professional?) is Amazing!
As to the "quilted" cakes, they are indeed adorable, but I would respectfully like to inform you guys a little bit about quilting. I'm a quilter and the type of cake pictured is probably more accurately called a "patchwork" cake, reminiscent of the way people used to patch pants or linens. The cross-hatching on the last cake much more closely resembles quilting. (I've also seen some done with a tool like a tracing wheel to mimic quilting stitches). None of this is to say I don't like these cakes - I do - just trying to help out. And besides you might be able to have more fun with alliteration by calling them "pretty plated patchwork" or something.
Finally, I wanted to share with you how much I enjoy your blog and appreciate the work you do to make it so professional (since the bakers don't)and entertaining! Rather than visiting every day, I normally set aside time on Sunday to savor the whole week.
Sorry for carryng on like this was a private email rather than a comment. I figure at this late date no one else is going to read it but you guys.

WV: resilsin - the quality you will need to be a great mother.
As a foster parent, I can't thank you enough for thinking of me and others who are less traditional moms! I appreciate it soooo much!
Wow! There are many talented ladies out there to be able to make such stunning cakes. I have two wonderful boys who have flown the nest. My youngest lad made me feel so loved and took any doubts I had away.
Children no matter what age are challenging but we wouldnt change them because with out them who would we share mothers day with and these yummy cakes.
Children are a gift from heaven so all mums are truly blessed.
Hugs julie
