Sunday Sweets: So Stinkin' Cute

Sunday, January 30, 2011

This week we're featuring some of the sweetest, cutest, most adorable, lovable, um... [consulting thesaurus] darling, bewitching, and fetching baby animal cakes you ever will see. Why? Well, if you must know, I'm feeling a bit sensitive this week.

This is john, by the way.

So, let me just get my box of tissues and we'll do this thing. Starting with Jen's favorite:

Found at the 2008 Orlando ICES Convention; baker unknown.

The hand-painted shading here is amazing. And the animals are adorable. And the lion isn't eating the zebra or the giraffe. So it's a win-win-win.

This cake is slightly more realistic:

Sub'd by Hilda F., and made by The Sweetest Thing Cake Studio

See how the monkey and giraffe cower in fear as the mighty tiger stalks his prey? Can you feel the tension? Can. You. FEEL IT?!?! No?

Maybe it's just me.

And now... sweet sleeping dragon!

Sub'd by Amelie B. and made by her sister Helene

Awwww. Okay. *sniff* I'm all verklempt. *sniff* I promised myself I wouldn't cry...

[blowing nose]

Hey! Look! Pandas!

Sub'd by Aljona and made by KralleCakes

And not just any pandas; these are the rare Russian Nesting Pandas. The mostly eat eucalyptus leaves and borscht.

Preeeesenting, the sweetest giraffe ever!

Literally. I think the lack of neck really adds to the adorabletude, don't you?

And because I have an inordinate affection for tigers:

Sub'd by Jade D. and made by Theresa Gue

So. Cool. Jen says this reminds her of some Lisa Frank folders she had in middle school. Which she claims is a huge compliment. So there.

And you know what else has stripes? (I am the king of segues)

Sub'd by Brenda B., and made by Lilo Taart

I'm digging the bow and the vintage 20's hair part. Just dandy!

And speaking of bows. (I'm on a roll!)

By Aletha B.

Baby Cthulhu!! AAAAAUUUGGHH!! SOOO CUUUUTE!!

And get this: this is Aletha B.'s first cake. Yes, really! Mike, Duff, and Bronwen better watch out, 'cuz Aletha B.'s coming, and she's got a Cthulhu.

And speaking of... cake. (Okay, that one wasn't my best work.)

By Ann N.

Adorable. And hip. Oh. Yeah.

Another of Jen's favorites:

Sub'd by Orna G., and made by Odelia

Hand-painted rosebuds, cuddly teddy bears, and a miniature cake on cake? I can bearly stand it!

And finally, for your viewing pleasure, allow me to present...

a unicorn with a comb-over:

Sub'd by Elizabeth A., and made by Sachi Swick

You're welcome.

I'd probably take the non-kid version of the book as my first pick. :)

Both Zooborn books are so cute! I would love to have either one.

MamaSlu said...

I'd like the second one, but if I manage to win, I'm sure the other person will want the second one too.... Therefore, to quote my mom, "beggars can't be choosers". Love your blog. Thanks!

Laura P. said...

Oh man did I squee when I saw that baby dragon! WANT SO BAD!!! All those cakes were adorable! And those teddy bears? They look so cuddly you could squeeze 'em! Fabulous cakes today.

I'd prefer the second book, but hey, any baby animal is cute!

Jennifer M. said...

Awwww, I about died from the cuteness of the tiger cake! Baby tigers are my weakness!

I'd never heard of Zoo Borns before, but now that I have, I would love one of those books! But even if I don't win, I imagine the website will keep me occupied for quite a while. :)

OMGosh, these were the sweeeeetes adorable cakes ever!

My daughter would love either one of the books, you can't help but love to look at any kind of baby animal, they are all so cute!

Unknown said...

Awww, these are just too darned cute! I think the rare Russian nesting pandas also drink vodka.

Unknown said...

That Cthulhu cake is almost as adorable as the cover to the second book! (Segway WIN)

Skid said...

Love the squished pandas - they made me smile. Sitting no-neck Giraffe was adorable as well!

as Katalina said - cuteness overload this week!

evilbeth said...

I love the first Zooborn book...but not as much as that no-neck giraffe cake! And the Cthulhu cake is amazing. We have a yarn Cthulhu and I thought that was the cutest one ever. Turns out I was wrong.

FM D'A said...

Throwing my virtual hat into the virtual ring to say that if I am indeed a Randomly Chosen One, I will be happy to take whichever book the other person doesn't want. Thanks--and thanks for all your hard work bringing us wreckage and sweets!

Heather B. said...

I love all the cakes. The teddy bears are so adorable! I really love the Zoo Borns! book with the tiger on the cover. Like John, I too have an affinity for tigers.

Tori said...

Squeeeee! So cute!

My daughter would adore the baby animals book. Animals are her favorite things on earth. You should see her collections of the stuffed variety. Er...they're not real of course.

Meg said...

These cakes are so stinkin cute. I loved the giraffe without a neck. Oh, and I would love either of the animal books:)

Unknown said...

That baby giraffe and the sleeping dragon are absolutely adorable, but those Teddy Bears just stole my heart. How absolutely cute are they? Great cakes this beautiful Sunday. I love seeing the wrecks, but I really look forward to Sunday Sweets.

And either one of those books would be well-loved in my household. We're all animal lovers, but especially my daughter (age 5) who doesn't play with dolls, only the animal figures.

Brenda P. said...

My four year old told me that the teddy bear cake was "so fluffy I'm gonna die", and I have to agree with him. I enjoy your work, thanks for sharing with us :)

Andi said...

I'm literally sick from all the sweetness! What a bunch of beautiful, fun cakes! :) And since I'm also a fan of tigers, I'd prefer the Zooborn book with the white tiger cub on the front cover.

JRose said...

I would like either really. To share with my nephew or share with myself (and probably my nephew).

Interestingly, the terms on Facebook say people aren't supposed to announce winners of sweepstakes contests there, which makes absolutely no sense to me. NO SENSE AT ALL!

P.S. UNICORN!

Unknown said...

i am SQUEAKING st my monitor. these are adorable!

I would love book 2. Or book 1, really, but especially book 2.

Juless said...

Ooooh! The pile of pandas! The Baby Chthulu! Too adorable!

Ok, there was so much cuteness in that post that I feel like a 12 year old girl, with the exclamation points to prove it. If you send me the 2nd book, I might just pop from so much cuteness!

Candice Y said...

The fox on the second totally has my vote :-)

Leah R. said...

Amazing how everyone comes out of the woodwork when you offer free books! lol

You had me going to tears quickly with the cuties. I kept scrolling down, and it just got better and better!

Awesome Sunday AND a Chthulu!! The sleeping baby dragon was so darn sweet I lost it. And then the... and the... aw geepers, you had to show the... !!!

Precious pandas stacked in threesomeness. I'm bookmarking that baby. Lifting the pic. (are cakes copyrighted?)

I would love either book, but I'll go for the second one, or the first, either one you'll send to me!

The second book.

These are very nicely done, super-cute cakes indeed. I can stand the sweetness as long as I think about little kids clapping for them (and not crying in terror when they realize they're supposed to eat the giraffe or whomever).

Totally gobsmacked by the concept of a baby Cthulhu cake.

SQUEE!! Nesty pandas!! So cute!!

And I would LOOOOOVE to share the zooborns second book, the whole family one, with my little ones. They adore you site, begging often for "CAKES! PLEASE!," which only sometimes means eating cake, mostly looking at hilarious cake pictures, thanks to you. My baby, who is two, is somewhat addicted to what his siblings call "the cute kitty site" (Icanhazcheseburger... though I might periodically have to edit the language) and the "baby animals site,: meaning cuteoverload, of course. My older ones love all animals and researching them. This would be rgeat for both the big and littles!

awww! the baby Zoo Born book! My 20 month old loves animals! He loves looking at animal books- he sits there and says all the animal sounds. In fact, we were at the grocery store the other day and he happened to see a rather large woman in a light pink shirt and started snorting like a pig! So horrifying! I don't think she noticed, but I tried to play it off like, "oh yeah, that's right! What does a cow say?" Like we were playing some game.... lol maybe we shouldn't get one :)

And that baby Cthulu is just da bomb :) with mama (daddy?) Cthulu's tentacles protectively reaching up....awwwww.......

Unicorn with a comb-over. Undescribably adorable.

RbeforeE said...

Ok you two are amazing. I spent the entire page saying 'ooh! No, THAT'S my fave!" It's hopeless. You find/receive the most incredible Sunday Sweets. I must admit I am tempted to doubt the one tiger is not a stuffed toy ;) but as always I marvel at the talent out there and love the commentary. (adorabletude... That is what the two of you have.)
Re: the books I am perfectly happy to receive either were I to be selected (but like so many of us, 'I never win anything') ;) yeah I'm the whiner that was first to not get your book at your San Diego signing. I fit into the age group of the second book but have a gorgeous new cousin once removed who is as cute as the cakes and would be delighted by the first book.

Those cakes are absolutely adorable!
And the books look sweet too! I'd be happy with either but my kids would probably love the kids' edition!

That is seriously her first cake?!?!?!!! Could she please share some of that talent with me? The bestest cake has to be that first one. The little blue lion? A.dor.able!

As for the books? If, by some miracle, you choose me...surprise me. Either book would be loved in this house. :)

The Cthulhu cake was admired by my whole Dungeons and Dragons group, which consists of 5 college guys who eat anything and everything without looking at it. So that's saying something! I would love the second ZooBorns book for my little sister, who loves all animals, but tigers especially.

AHHH!! The cuteness is overwhelming!! My kids and I love cute little animals, so the first book would be so awesome to win.

Oh man, that unicorn with the comb over. The nesting pandas!! I can barely stand it!

Thanks for sharing the link. I would like the second book, if I win please!

Oh my goodness gracious, I want a real plush version of the giraffe on the 5th cake! He is too sweet :)

Any baby animals are okay by me!

PS- thank you for making awesome cakes my favorite part of Sunday. Cake Wrecks rocks!

Oh. My. God. Not only are the cakes adorable (even the slightly disturbing but still AWESOME baby Chthulu), but you're giving away those ridiculously cute books too???? Sign me up for the second one, please!

Seriously?! Are those three bears covered in fluffy icing? That is amazing! And Jen is right...that tiger is totally a Lisa Frank throwback!

Oh yeah, I like the 1st Zooborn book!

I want the first book please. I'm 6 (almost 7) and I love your cake pictures. I look at them with my mom. Thank you.

I'd love the second book. Or the first! I have five girls -- cuteness overload every day! But they voted for the hippo as their fave. Love the Israeli teddies too!

#4 Everyone knows the Panda eats, shoots and leaves. (Probably not the first to come up with that, but I don't have time to read 1100 comments right now.)

#6 looks really cool.

#8 I thought maybe there wouldn't be a 'borderline' today, but was (happily) wrong. 'Happy Birthday 222'? Must be the 2nd birthday of triplets. One hopes. Although I saw a cake picture over at worth1000 dot com under the heading 'wishful thinking' that said "Happy 200th Birthday, Dad." Which really did 'get' me (miss you, Dad!).

#10 My Sweetheart (ok, and I) like teddy bears. Actually, she loves them; I 'like' them. Just wanted to clarify that. ;-)

Baby animals for my baby boy! (okay, so I'm in denial that he'll be 2 soon. But he loves books! And animals! And books about animals!)

Cute cakes! And who would have thought of a baby Chthulu cake all cutesy-like? That second book, the one "for everyone else" would be my top pick, if I am the lucky one.

I like the first one! Also, the baby Chthulu was awesome.

I'd prefer the second book. Somewhere along the way I picked up an inordinate attraction to Fennec Fox. So cute with big ears and the eyes and those ears!
Thanks for the chance to win. And for the adorable cakes. Made me smile today. Thanks again.
