[wistful sigh]
Ah, how I miss my people.
Fortunately, I have this week's awesome Sweets line-up to help heal the hurt.
Beware the Cthulhu, a monstrous creature of gargantuan size which evokes terror in all it encounters!!
Made by Rebecca H, another hobby baker, and based on the artwork "Cthulu's Day Out" by Ursulav.
You score 10 geek points if you can correctly identify this next cake:
Yes?
Here's a close up of the top:
Yep, these are my people, I tell ya.
So, imagine my glee when I saw this:
Awww yeeeeah.
[Update: I'm told this is "Saber from Fate Stay Night." Here's hoping that means something to somebody out there. :)]
And finally, a fitting homage to Dragon*Con:
Detail shot:
And that's it! Thanks very much to all of you lovely readers who found us and said hello last weekend; it was a blast meeting you! I can't wait to do it all over again next year.
Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Do I get extra credit if I can name the turtle and all four elephants? :D
Ahhhhh, Discworld Cake! I want to get married all over again so that can be my wedding cake.
Yes! Atari. I loved Pitfall on that.
The Chibi is "Saber" from the anime Fate/Stay Night.
She's also known as King Arthur.. which led to my roommate's battlecry of "WHY IS KING ARTHUR A WOMAN?!"
OMG! I want that Discworld cake for MY wedding!
That chibi cake is of Saber, one of the heroic spirits summoned to fight the Holy Grail War in Fate/Stay Night. FSN was originally a visual novel, but the first route has been adapted into a TV anime series (and I guess the second route is getting a movie now), plus there's a fighting game and I think an RPG now as well.
The girl on Don Busiak's cake is Saber, from the video game and anime Fate|Stay Night.
Completely geeked out over the Discworld cake and recognized it immediately!
The character I believe is Saber from the anime Fate Stay Night
I've never before felt so non-nerdy. yeeessss
That chibbi is saber from Fate stay/night
The chibi character is actually Saber from Fate Stay Night. I love Dragoncon! I was there this past year too, in costume, and plan to attend next year as well.
Discworld!!! That one made me SO happy! It almost makes me wish I was geeky enough to have a Terry Pratchett wedding cake.
That is chibi Saber from computer game turned anime Fate/Stay Night. :)
the chibi is Saber from Fate/stay night. ^^ and extremely adorable.
What a great A'Tuin!
I believe the chibi character is Saber, from the anime Fate/Stay Night. It's beautifully done!

Don Buciak's cake is Saber from the visual novel and anime series Fate/Stay Night: http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/wallpapers/comments/item93554/ Nice cake, too.
The chibi character is Saber from the video game/visual novel/anime Fate/Stay Night.
Oh, and the Disc World cake is awesome.
As soon as I saw the turtle I knew!
So awesome.
(An aside...I saw one of those white oval stickers on a car that said UU and I thought, I want an Unseen University sticker for MY car! I got closer and realized it was for the Unitarian Universalist church. Though I totally think Unitarians would enjoy the double entendre.)
i <3 that dragon!!!
The chibi character is one called Sabre. I don;t know what she is from but she shows up all the time on dannychoo.com.
http://www.dannychoo.com/post/en/20751/Nendoroid+Saber+Lily.html
The chibi cake is of the character Saber from Fate/Stay Night. I enjoy being a geek ^_^
Very nice and geek-y!
When I first saw the turtle cake, all I could think of was Stephen King's "It" and the "Dark Tower" series which also has a turtle of enormous girth and upon his shell he holds the earth...
Cool cakes! AND to answer your question...I not only "remember" Atari, we still have the original system that I grew up with in the early 80's. We still have all the game cartridges and we still play!
The character you don't recognize is Saber from the anime Fate Stay Night.
very sweet.
I LOVE that Discworld cake! Such detail! Such Discworld-y geographic accuracy! A'Tuin, the elephants, the sun and the moon and the water falling off the edge...even the Counterweight continent. My geeky little heart is bursting with delight! =D
I love the geekness!
The chibi is Saber from Fate Stay Night if i'm not mistaken.
And these are all mind blowing amazing. :)
The Discworld was a wedding cake? OMG! I so want that one as my wedding cake! - Becky
Ohhh, how I wish that Discworld cake were mine! I'm a huuuuge fan of Terry Pratchett; in fact, I have a top-down view of the Discworld tattooed on my back :)
All of today's cakes are awesome, but that one just... takes the cake (sorry).
The anime character is Saber from fate/stay night. cute!! ^_^
DISCWORLDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3
The Chibi girl is from the tv show Fate; Stay Night :)
Terry Pratchett´s Disk world novels!!! Yeah! I want my ten geek points!
Ooh! The cute anime girl is Saber from Fate Stay Night! X3
The unknown chibi girl is actually Saber, from the series Fate/Stay Night.
Amber
Discworld squee! Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. I particularly like the Moist Von Lipwig books. Those cakes are all great.
That Smaug cake is amazing! It even has Bilbo stealing that cup. :)
They're all great, but oh my,the dragon is awesome!
The chibi-girl is Saber from the anime Fate/Stay Night. One of my favorites!
And I love Discworld. Terry Pratchett is hilarious.
A Discworld cake?! Oh my!(want)
This has nothing to do with today's awesome cakes, but Awful Library Books is showing a book on sandwich cakes/loaves. Just thought you should know.
OMG Meaghan, I was also thinking Dark Tower. My favorite books and comics! Oh well maybe I can find an actual dark tower cake out there.
A'Tuin!!! :-) And oh my god I want that dragon...
I love geeky cake days!!!
You should start collecting WoW themed cakes for the Cataclysm release in a few months <3
An Atari cake. Sweeeeeet.
That dragon is AMAZING! I want to order it for my hubby!
I'm not geeky enough to know what Disc World even IS, but what struck me about the piece is that it looks very much like "Turtle Island," which is what some First Nations groups call the Earth, to describe their own myths about our world..maybe that is where Disc World got the idea... it is a rockin' cake too!
Looks like the comments are turning into this into another "Epcot" post!
Did you know that chibi character is Saber from Fate/Stay Night?
XD
So, where can I redeem my 10 geek points? ;-)
Ohhhhh, The Great A'Tuin! That's amazing! I am starting to plan my wedding and sort of wish I/we were a little more geeky so we could have that as our cake :-D
I totally got the Discworld cake.
I was at D*C too and there was much steampunk-related swooning for me.
(Is that Mur cake for Mur from I should be writing?)
Smile, I'm currently watching that series. I was certain she was Jeanne D'Arc...she's King Arthur? :gonk: WTF?
Yay for Terry Pratchett-based cakes. XD
It sure is weird that no one knows who that chibi is. *grin*
That discworld cake is amazing. I think my favorite of the geeky cakes featured here so far. Just awesome.
That Great A'tuin cake was AMAZING. I can't believe the detail! And the elephants! And a;osidhfadigouhbadfgkljh I need one at my wedding! Or at the very least, a little Death of Rats serving a normal cake with his scythe.
Every day at D*C, I became more convinced that steampunks have more fun than any other geeky subculture. You didn't mention it, but the steampunk ball was by far my favorite late night party of the convention.
Great A'Tuin! Thank you so much for posting that incredible Discworld cake. Every single fan of Cakewrecks who loves it for it's humor & intelligence needs to read Terry Pratchett's works, if they don't already. Seriously folks, you will love his stuff.
I love the shopping Cthlutu cake. Ancient demons like to spend money too.
Help! Can some of you CW fans give me a Terry Pratchett substitute? Now that I've read all the books (some several times), I need to move on to another smart/funny author. Any ideas for me?
LOVE the discworld cake (and I'm not even a dedicated Pratchett fan. Unlike everyone else in my family. And the Steampunk cake - now that looks like a cake you could eat, I doubt there is much more than bones in the (beautiful) dragon!
I didn't just guess Discworld; I shrieked "DISCWORLD!" If I ever get married, that will be my wedding cake. It is decided as of today.
*is overflowing with geeky love*
That last cake? HA!!! WROOONNG!!! No dragons at Dragon*Con!! I read all your blogs, looked at hundreds of pics. Liiiaarrr! (channelling Valerie from "Princess Bride").
Anyway, nice cakes, Dragon*Con looked fun and cool, but, seriously...THERE WERE NO DRAGONS! ;p
Wow, a Hellboy cake! I wouldn't have expected that character to get the cake treatment...and by an amateur, at that. Impressive!
I used to love playing Space Invaders on my cousins' old Atari when I was a kid.
Now I want to break out my Discworld books again.... And eat cake!
I was so caught up in the dragon, I didn't even notice Bilbo. Or perhaps he was wearing the Ring when I was looking, hmm?
*steals Great A'Tuin when no one is looking* >.>
Awesome! I knew the Discworld cake right away--I've been tearing through all of the local library's Terry Pratchett books lately. That is really, really cool.
WV: marin. The giant turtle is part of the local marin life.
those joysticks!!! and the little ghosts are too cute
You guys think Dragon Con is the "ultimate geek gathering" on Labor Day weekend? Try PAX Prime, the 60k+ in attendance gamer convention that happens in Seattle that same weekend. It's really not very far from Portland, I suggest you guys check it out. Or maybe try PAX East that happens in Boston during the spring so you could still go to Dragon Con. It's smaller than Prime, but should have the same feel.
I'm deducting 1 geek point from you for misspelling Discworld as two words. I'm very ashamed.
On the other hand, that's a really good Great A'Tuin. Clearly I need to find someone to marry so I can get a cake like that.
Discwo-- DAMMIT! YOU BLEW MY POINTS BY ANSWERING IT.
http://arguingwithadoughnut.blogspot.com
Ah! A manga cake! I must admit, I'm not familiar with that anime, but seeing that a chibi in CAKE FORM could be accomplished made my day, since I've wanted to eat Tachibana Kanade's face for a long time. Points and a virtual high-five to whoever can identify who that is!
I now seriously want to cry that I have never had, and probably never will have, an amazing A'Tuin cake. I love the dragon cake, too, but to someone who's life motto might be "De Chelonian Mobile," it's hard to beat anything Discworld, let alone something that amazing.
The Nolans - have you checked out Neil Gaiman? He does tend to be darker than Pratchett, but he still makes me lol.
I don't know which is my favorite- the dragon or the atari!
DISCWORLD!!!! Four exclamation points being the sign of insanity!!!!
Ahh, I love those books (Death rules). Awesome cake! :)
Ah, the good old days of cheesy arcade games. Check out this piece of nostalgia.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ2Q6eEjQx8
That was a most awesome Disc World cake!
This was my first year at D*C and I can't wait until next year already!
Where were you located? There was so much to see and do, I spent most of the with my friends in The Weyr over in Vinings. Next year I will be moving around more and hopefully will find you.
YES. I want that steampunk cake for my birthday.
Thank you for posting my cake (Cthulhu)! Since I sent you the photo over a year ago, I was sure it was never going to make the Sunday Sweets cut. You made my day! I'll make sure the cake recipient and the artist know it's here as well.
And, since nobody has mentioned it, I'm thinking the Cthulu birthday cake was for Mur Lafferty. But her birthday was in July so perhaps not. hmm... Anyway, thanks to combining two of my favourite things - D*C and Cake Wrecks. This was my 8th D*C and it's always awesome.
I'm a big fan of steampunk, and I want that cake for my next birthday!
Steampunk? *worships*
I completely forgot to breathe when I saw the Discworld cake! Then I started pointing frantically at it while yelling, "For my birthday! For my birthday!" at my husband. It's PERFECT!
That chibi character is Saber from Fate/Stay Night.
@SaraT Yup- that was my birthday cake from July 2009, a most awesome present. Rebecca is a BIG CW fan.
that dragon was great!
i was a dragon-con this year. crazy stuff going on there.
My sis & her hubby were there and even looked for you! They had probably as good a time as you did! Oh and the #1 cake is in the #1 spot for a reason. Love Big Red!
Oh and the Atari cakes is awesome! Ah the memories...*looking wistfully into the air*
Sentence I never thought I'd say:
"Awww!! Cthulu is SO CUTE!!"
Thanks for posting my Smaug! One person did notice Bilbo stealing the cup lol! The next dragon will be Eragon's beloved Saphira!
I almost never leave a comment here, but a Discworld cake!? AWESOME!!!!!!
Thank you for posting my steampunk cake! I am a big fan of yours and never thought one of my cakes would end up on Sunday Sweets.
Dying about that Discworld cake! Too cool.
Very happy to see Smaug and Bilbo.
Thanks for the links to Steampunk @ D*C on your alternate blog. Love the fashions.
~~Di
Need more love for the Hellboy cake -- that is awesome!
The only thing that would be better would be a side of pancakes to go with the cake.
Or maybe a cake made to look like a stack of pancakes...
And, of course, the Right Hand of Doom!
Aaagghh!!!!!!! I will DIE if I don't get a Discworld cake like that for my birthday! I've read all his books SO many times.
There is not enough squee for that post, especially as I just made a Pratchett reference on WoW and got chirping crickets. Seriously. NO ONE said ANYTHING. Anyway, I also adore all of Ursula's stuff, so seeing Happy Cthulhu made me giggle as well. :D
I squealed when I saw the Discworld cake. I have almost all of his books, they can be impossible to find used here in the States.
Jeebers Crisp! Details! That is way awesome. Especially th turtle that carries the world. I love mythology and these mythological cakes are excelent. The old Actari system is way cool too!
@Kat...
I've been helping you out there, I donated the entire Discworld collection (to that point) to Goodwill to free up some space on my bookshelves a few years ago, and have been regretting it ever since. Yes, I'm in the process of re-buying books that I've already spent money on, never mind read.
The Great a'Tuin floored me, as did Chthulu. Today's post put me in geek paradise.
Wow I love all of these cakes but that dragon has me going WANT WANT WANT so much hubby had to take a look lol. I normally just sit and stare in awe but that cake just has me drooling in glee. Beautiful!
I did a Discworld cake eons ago for my hubby. It was one of my first cakes, actually. I've always agreed that Jane's is better than mine by far, but I did record my construction process and have had a tutorial posted for ages, in case any of the commenters desperate for one want to make their own:
http://kimberlychapman.com/crafts/cakes/discworld/discworld.html
For the commenter who wants something like Discworld to read: Try Tom Holt, he has a similar irreverant sense of humour.
I love the Discworld cake - I sent it in as its the same person who did my wedding cake.
First of all, LOVE the Great A'Tuin cake! (If it were mine, I'd want little Rincewind and Two Flower figures tumbling over the edge... or caught in the Rim Net)
Secondly, the only video games we ever owned as children were Atari!
Thirdly... this is possibly my favourite Sunday Sweets post. Ever. (Though, Jon's Harry Potter ones are pretty fabulous, too.)
That is one amazing Great A'Tuin, and the way the water cascades over Tubul, Jerakeen, Berilia and Great T'Phon is fab! (do I get bonus points for naming them all?)
Goodness, that Discworld Cake is better than any figurine of Great A'tuin I've ever seen! Its pure madness, who would eat a masterpiece like that? I'd cry if I saw someone cutting into it. I'm a huge discworld fan, Pratchett is a god with pen & paper (*pun intended*), I especially enjoyed his last works with Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mc Feegles :D I just finished "I shall wear Midnight" yesterday. Thank you very much for showing me this cake. I shall drool over it for all eternity.
Yours,
Akhuna
SEIBAH!!!!!!!
I agree with what She said... and do we get a bonus roll for being able to name ALL the cake-y references??
For once, I can stand proud in my geekishness, because I'm in good company :-)
kez
Wow! We were at Dragon*Con too! I got lots of pictures. I do think that Gingerbread Man was following me and my hubs around throughout the entire convention. It was a little strange! :)
I LOVE the Atari cake! *want*
My eldest asked to go to school as the Great A'tuin for World book day when he was 6. So I knew who the turtle was immediately! Spent ages on the costume which we thought looked great... but none of the children (or parents) understood who he was and kept asking him if he was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. He was not impressed!
Loving the geeky sweets!
The Discworld cake is made of so much win, I could explode.
Wow, thanks for the photos! The Discworld Cake was excellent!
And yes, I miss the DragonCon atmosphere as well - everyone was so darn polite down there!
I was at DragonCon too!!! Had a wonderful time! The best place to get your geek on! :D :D
And as always, the Sunday sweets are FABULOUS!
I'm impressed they did a chibi Saber well enough that i had to resist the urge to squee when i saw it. (and i say that as a guy of course)
Terry Pratchett, FTW!!! Possibly the yummiest version I could imagine of Discworld.
...I need a discworld cake. OMG.
DISCWORLD. I wish I could have that cake for my wedding. I don't think i'd get much argument either. xD
@The Nolans, if you're looking for a similar kind of humour, try books by Jasper Fforde. It's not as much high fantasy, but I highly recommend his writing.
I identified the discworld instantly. I even have the word "pictsie" as my license plate. No one has ever asked me if it was related. Anyway, I am glad I am not alone in the multiverse.
I was just barely intorduced to steampunk via etsy.com last week. I was searching for a locket for my birthday, and found some awesome steampunk lockets, and cuff links. you should check it out if you haven't already:)
Terry Pratchett Terry Pratchett rah rah rah!!! P.S. to Shieldmaiden96- I'm a UU and we had a sermon based on Small Gods once-it was a beautiful thing :).
I can not tell you how much I now regret my perfectly adorable wedding cake, (which had turtles on it!), now that I have seen the A'Tuin cake from Discworld. You have ruined a perfectly good cake memory.
De-lurking to say "Yay for the Discworld cake!" I'm also thrilled to see so many Pratchett readers here -- my husband and I are in the process of re-reading the entire collection, and don't know anyone else who reads them (we have tried to get some of our friends turned on to the Discworld series, but no luck so far...)
The cake is exquisite, and I'd love to get one for my husband's next birthday.
Yay! A Discworld cake! And they even got the sun going over it. Fabulous. :o)
Ahhhh, Discworld!!! Awesome. And yes, I'm old enough to remember the Atari. Also, the steampunk thing makes me laugh uncontrollably especially since I'm also obsessed with the ongoing Regretsy "things that are not steampunk"....
That Discworld cake (and yes, I guessed instantly) is the best thing I've ever seen. Made of cake and sugar, I mean.
There is an amazing Steam Punk cake that was done for this wedding if you have not seen it yet. http://www.empblog.com/?p=2295
The Turtle Moves!
Ah! Discworld!!! I <3 those books. And that cake is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing that awesomeness, it really made my day!
Very cute, thanks for the photo shot.
I'm actually friends with Mur from the Cthulhu cake! How cool!!!
I can't thank you enough for posting the Discworld cake... It's my wedding cake!
Jane is my mother, and I happened to be at her house reading your blog when I saw the pictures! I screamed, 'My wedding cake is on Cake Wrecks!' and she got the wrong idea and thought you hated it! I had to set her straight! Thanks again! X
(Yes, I hated having to cut it, but it was delicious!)
Discworld wedding cake?! Incredible!! And that dragon is mindblowing!!! So much awesomeness *mind explodes*
Hahahaha XD
It is great to see so many Disc World fans...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one ...I have to say that cake is incredible!!! The attention to detail is phenominal and spot on. What a very lucky bride :)
Maybe someone should email a pic of it to Terry Pratchett? I think he would appreciate it...not many authors can boast that their books get turned into wedding cakes :)
Ali
