Wreckies of the Month

Saturday, July 16, 2011

Every week we're delighted to receive plenty of your cakey homages, wreck-creations, and fan art. And, from time to time, I like to both encourage this behavior and share the giggles by spotlighting a few personal favorites. So let's get right to it, shall we?

First, a nod to Katherine S. for her version of the world's best baby shower cake:

Let us all pause in appreciation of proper parenting, shall we?

Carmel C. went the extra mile with her Carrot Jockey homage and eschewed the plastic jockeys for handmade ones:

And somehow that is much, MUCH more disturbing.

I think I like it.

Amber A. celebrated her three-year-old daughter's birthday the old-school way:

With Dino Jockeys!

Usually I only showcase cakey homages to this blog, but Sarah Jane J.'s recreation of the famous cake from Hyperbole and a Half was simply too good not to share:

And for those of you unfamiliar with Allie of Hyperbole and a Half - first, shame on you! - and secondly, here's the cake we're talking about:

Next, from our very own J Rose - the genius who brought you that playable dress-a-wreck program - here is yours truly, dressed as a Hogwarts student, and getting a Howler from an irate wizard for making fun of cauldron cakes:

(Ten geek points if you spotted the hidden Mickey before reading this sentence. Five after.)

And because I like to remind the world that I am, in fact, a stellar role model for children, here's a sampling of artwork made entirely with child labor:

First, 12-year-old Chloe made this birthday card for her mom, Regina:

The bottom reads, "We dyed our mohawks green in honor of your birthday!" and the inside read, "Hope your birthday isn't a wreck!"

Someone get this girl to design us a greeting card line, STAT.

Next, a fine art piece brought home from school by 5-year-old Claudia S., and sent in by her mom, Susan:

Thinking of little Claudia's teacher's reaction to this masterpiece makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Now, you may be thinking that a five-year-old must surely - SURELY - be my youngest fan.

Au contraire, my misinformed friend!

BEHOLD!!! THE MAGNIFICENCE!!!!

My friends, this nameless girl baby is YOUR NEW MASTER. Bow down in fealty!!

Or maybe just say how cute she is in the comments.

That works, too.

And for those of you desperate for back story, Colleen T. says,

"Ever since my mother-in-law pointed out that my baby has a natural Mohawk, I’ve been dying to strip her down and sit her on a carrot. The other day, I got my wish!"

Your wish, and a billion others, Colleen. Well done.

Claudia's Carrot Jockey caused my first ever spit-take. Just finished wiping up the coffee.
I've been in the market for a new master, and this adorable nameless carrot jockey girl baby is just what I had in mind.
I will bow before her...
Oh look, coffee on the floor.

One must assume that Claudia went to school one day, and the teacher said,
"Class, today I want you to draw a picture of THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER."
And Claudia did.

I don't find Carmel C.'s carrot jockeys disturbing at all. They all look so happy!

WV: Gauteroo(adj.) - Used to describe a tacky item from Australia. That ten tier flaming fountain wedding cake is a bit gauteroo, mate. All it needs are sprinkles.

Nameless real baby carrot jockey, you are amazing, and we salute you!

The rest of these are all great, as well.

The nameless baby girl carrot jockey NEEDS to be on a tshirt!

Anonymous said...

Did you delete yesterday's post on "National Nudity Day"? I guess I was worried that someone gave you a hard time about it. I'm a pastor's wife and I thought it was cute. Now if there had been photos included, THAT would be creepy.:-)

Naomi said...

"And for those of you unfamiliar with Allie of Hyperbole and a Half - first, shame on you!"

My shame is unfathomably deep. I shall now attempt to rectify the situation by reading the entire Hyperbole and a Half backlog-- pausing occasionally to catch my breath and wipe the coffee off my monitor.

wv: ricratin-- I love how all you talented people are ricratin famous wrecks!

Lindsey said...

Apparently I'm clueless. I do not see a hidden Mickey at all, even after thorough searching. :(

Love the homage cakes. Keep 'em coming!!

Just scared the cat with my laughter/spitting cawfie because of the nameless baby carrot jockey...

tjbmurph is right! I see great sales potential for a T shirt with the baby girl. Would you have to pay her a modeling fee??? Let us know when they appear!

Seriously, i am tempted to print the photo of the baby on the carrot, frame it, and put it on my wall. Total awesomeness!!!

5 points for me.
Also, this is awesome.

Great baby. Great carrot. Great photography. This is a case of needing photo credits, too. I am smitten. Norine

Carol said...

Colleen T., that is hilarious! Can you just see your daughter when she's around 15 or so looking at that and saying "Mom...geez....wtf!!!" lol

Maureen said...

Wacky. You guys are wacky. Your fans are wacky. The cakes are wonderfully wacky. I'm wacky for being addicted to this site. And... Hyperbole and a Half is one of the most awesomely funny blogs evah! I've read "The God of Cake" several times and recommended it to several friends. And of course I'm always telling people about THIS site. Well done, all you wacky people you.

Sharyn said...

How on earth did I survive without "Hyperbole and a Half?" and do we have enough laundry clean so I can spend the next few days doing nothing but reading it? Well, and feeding the cats -- my family can fend for itself, but THE CATS MUST BE FED!!! ("Me-Now!")

Thanks for the special Saturday post -- I wish I was half as clever as all these featured wreckies.

Claudia's Carrot Jockey is my new hero! Love the blog, thanks for always making me laugh!

Darth Vader holding a baby + real live carrot jockey + a howler yelling at Jen + kid art cake wreck style = one of the awesomest, most brilliant posts evahhh!!!! Oh and 5 points for me and 100 points from Slytherin, just because I hate snakes.

I love all of the naked mohawk baby carrot jockey tributes, but can I just say that I love, love, love the dino carrot jockey cake? Fantastic!

IrisFleuron said...

Well, no points for me today. I know hands are hard to draw, but the stumps are kind of freaking me out here.

I have only one criticism of Hyberole and a Half. She needs to write and draw more! I go through withdrawls in between posts.

That Hyperbole cake is made of awesome! And oh, how I wish I'd thought of bringing in a giant carrot when my son was a baby...

Absolutely love the baby. Too cute!

SaraCVT said...

I am not shamed at all--I know Allie and Hyberbole and A Half from way back; in fact my husband hates that I love it so much because I'm always reading her hilarious stuff to him. I knew which cake you meant immediately--the one from "The God Of Cake", but I must confess it had never occurred to me to reproduce it before. My eyes have been opened.

And Lindsey, don't feel bad--I couldn't see the Mickey either. And I literally just got home from Disneyland; I've had LOTS of practice seeing that mouse everywhere.

Sariah said...

The real carrot jockey baby!!!! Oh my gosh! I wish my kids were still babies just so I could do this photo and put it on my Christmas card. I LOVE IT.

The live-action carrot jockey IS. THE. AWESOMENESS!! this made post-surgery recovery sooooo much better!

wv: ausso. That adorable carrot-jockey baby girl is ausso cute!!

I LOVE the nameless baby girl jockey. I also bow down before her.
I just wish I had had the foresight to do this with my mini mowhaker 6 years ago.

I love that the real baby girl has her fist raised in a little salute :o)

I love the anonymous baby. Too Cute For WORRRRDS!!!

Absolutely beautiful live carrot jockey! I bow to her beauty and how well she looks sitting on the carrot as a jockey. Mom - give her a hug and a kiss from this fan of Cake Wrecks and carrot jockeys!

Kudos to Mom Colleen for getting the idea and picture!!!

RobynR said...

That live naked mohawk baby carrot jockey? I can totally do that as I happen to have a mohawked baby of my own! Thanks for the inspiration Colleen (it's ok to call blatant plagiarism "inspiration" right?)!

JoAnna said...

Love the H&1/2 cake!!! Hyperbole and a Half is the blog that led me to Cake Wrecks, and I'm so thankful it did cuz I love both blogs SOOOOO much! I do have to confess that I missed the hidden Mickey until I read the comment. It's Saturday, I'm still tired from the midnight release of HP7pt2 on Thursday night. That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it.

Craig said...

The Real Live Carrot Jockey picture should a.) be printed on a cake, and b.) totally go in the subject's high school yearbook. Because an opportunity to mortify one's teenage child is a terrible thing to waste.

Dang it, I forgot: RLCJ looks like the Gerber baby. Or is it Gerbera?

Colleen - you are the Best. Mom. Ever. That photo is amazing. Someday, she will thank you for that photo ( or send you n expensive therapy bill. It's a toss up.)

That baby is too much! It's like the baby's thinking, 'Okay, me, this is your shot for the big times. If you just nail this pose, you'll be a staaar! *baby variant of jazz hands*"

Nyl said...

Conversation with my 3 year old just the other day:

"Mama, are those babies?" "Yep." "On carrots?" "Yep." "Okay."

Because why wouldn't babies be riding carrots? Just look at the pictures! Too frickin' adorable for words. Now if only my own wee babe had enough hair to pull it off... *sigh*

D said...

You really should be selling those carrot pillows on your site.

Dancer said...

Awesome. This is officially my favorite Wreckies post. And not just because of the real life carrot jockey or the Harry Potter drawing. (It was the Hyperbole and a Half cake that made me love it, actually.)

One of these days I'll make my own version of that cake...

Craig:
THE GERBERA IS NOT A BABY!! It is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family. It was named in honour of the German botanist and naturalist Traugott Gerber, andis, therefore, correctly pronounced (/ˈɡɜrbərə/) It's really flowery and not at all babyish.

I have to admit that Allie of Hyperbole and a Half in that story is completely me. On my last birthday. On the last birthday that I was invited to. On that day that I bought a half-sheet cake at a local grocery store that was reduced to $5-- well, because it was a $40 cake on sale for $5. I'm with Allie. Even locking that cake in a room and locking me out of the building would not have kept me from it.
I'm going to totally request that cake for my next sugar-coma- inducing birthday.

For a brief and unforgivable moment I thought Dino Jockeys may just kick the Carrot Jockeys dimpled butts, but then I saw that baby. God forgive me. Carrot Jockeys Rule!

After the horror of those baby shower cakes the other day, my head nearly exploded from the cuteness of that adorable real-live carrot jockey!!!

The real-life baby carrot jockey = WIN.
That is all. :D

Colleen T. said...

Thank you everyone for the kind words! I will be saving this post along with all the comments in RLCJ's baby book. :) I also think Craig's idea of including the picture in her high school yearbook is a great one!

Norine: My husband, James, took the picture in a makeshift studio he set up in our living room. Photography is one of his hobbies.

@LatinMama- "100 points from Slytherin, just because I hate snakes." You rock, lady!!

@Craig: good ones, sir, good ones!

@Anon July 17, 2011 1:01 AM- I, too, thought the dinos deserved a place alongside the naked babies until I saw the live action version.

OMG!!! That is our Hyperbole cake!!! We (My sister & I) are so honored that it made Cakewrecks. The friend we made it for was the one who introduced us to both Hyperbole and Cakewrecks. So it's only fitting that we make the famous GOD OF CAKE for her birthday. =)

FYI-For those who will attempt to recreate Allie's cake, toothpicks...lots and lots of toothpicks.

I LOVE Hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com! You have to check out the pain scale (I work in a hospital and showed the ER nurses). And Simple Dog is soooo stupid! LOL!

For the record, I uploaded the original Naked Mohawk-Baby Carrot Jockey cake to my FB page back in September of last year, begging one of my friends, any one of them, to dress their baby like that for Halloween. No one did.

So...yeah. Wish come true. My allegiance is yours, nameless baby girl carrot jockey.

Words cannot express how freaking cute that baby-on-a-carrot is. I gasped and silently squeed for about five seconds before I could do anything else.

How did I not think of doing that when my baby had her own natural Mohawk?! I will now hang my head in shame?

I normally find babies to be kind of gross and therefore avoid even looking at them. That said, this carrot jockey baby is hilarious, awesome, and adorable. Higher praise cannot be had from me, regarding babies.
