Reach for the Skyyyyy!

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Graduates, now that you've graduated, a whole new world of possibilities is open to you!

Possibilities like...

...getting arrested in an old-timey Western.

Oh, c'mon, I can't be the only one who hears Woody from Toy Story saying this, can I?

And that's not the only problem. Nope, it seems that some bakers are having trouble understanding what those white things are called:

And they're not doing so great on the "clouds," either.

Now, you might think that nixing the troublesome "sky" component all together would help:

But then, you also might think that's not how you spell "congratulations" OR "banner," so that just shows what you know. [eye roll]

Thanks to Meg K., Katie K., & Lindsey M., who prefer reaching for the stars.

Especially when they're named Johnny Depp or Nathan Fillion. (Mrowr.)

Now, I just have to say, I have a horrible spelling handicap - I can truly forgive spelling errors - cakes don't come with spell-check after all...lol But inventing completely new words is not a spelling error (though I have come very close myself - with words spell check doesn't even recognize!...lol) And why are the clouds on that cake blue? And, prior to printing, does no one actually read what the instructions are for the piping? I mean...do they just see letters, so assume they are to be part of the decorations?...lol I love this site...cracks me up ever time. :P

And finally, I'm still on the hunt for a wreck of my very own. ;)

Wish I had one of those cakes at my "gradution"-hey this freedom from spelling rules is fun!

I am surprised that many of these cakes don't have forehead prints in them from the inevitable "Dooh!!!" when the big reveal happened.

Of course, I pulled the digital string for Woody's wonderful voice. Thank-you for including that.

Danger Boy said...

Amazing that these continue to propagate in the wild. I wonder how many places wreck 'em on purpose?

Beth said...

Ok, I don't usually comment, but I totally heard Woody from Toy Story on the first one, and Nathan Fillion is completely yummy. Mrowr, indeed! You have excellent taste, Jen.

Maybe the cake is for the graduates of Romper Room. OK, everyone sing along now...

Or maybe there's a grad out there whose name actually IS "Banner"... we can hope...

You've finally done it. Cake wrecks has been mean spirited before, but this takes the cake. Imagine how proud the Bonner family is of little Congratution. Probably the first in their family to achieve this mile stone. It's a beautiful cake for the Bonner celebration.

Of course, after making fun of Debbie's love of cats, we can expect this type of thing.

sara said...

Woody stole it from Yosemite Sam who was parodying somebody I'm too young to remember. Or too old.

Good call on Johnny and Nathan :)

Babsiegirl said...

When I saw the title, I totally heard it in Woody's voice in my head.

Cathy said...

So, Jen ..... another closet "Castle" fan! My guilty pleasure. Besides "Cake Wrecks", I mean.

Tricia L said...

Un-freaking-believable!

I'm beginning to wonder if the "training" to be a cake decorator consists of:

"This is a cake. This is a piping bag. Put the pointy end on the cake. Write whatever it says on the order sheet."

Geez, people!

sole said...

The Bonner cake could be referring to the "Bonner Scholar" program which is a public service institution at many college campuses. :)

Jessie said...

mmm Nathan Fillion. MMMM Johnny Depp. Mmmmm. Cake. And yeah, all I heard was Woody from Toy Story saying "REACH FOR THE SKY!" Hmmm, I had a crush on Tom Hanks as a kid. And so that rounds out this entry of yumminess. Hanks, Fillion, Depp, Cake, Woody. Sounds dirty. I like.

Anonymous said...

Uh huh, those make sense D:

Gary said...

Seriously, does anybody NOT know that "Reach for the sky!" is what you say when you point a gun at somebody in a Western?

If that last cake says "Congratulations Donner," I'm not eating the cake.

Amanda Mac said...

Actually, I heard Firehouse...

"Reach for the sky, or I will shoot you down in the blink of an eye"

Hmm... Might not be such a bad idea. Step away from the icing tips, wreckerators, and nobody gets hurt.

Candi said...

Nathan Fillion for sure!

Rachelf said...

I forgot about the cakes as soon as you mentioned Nathan Fillion :).

Melanie H. said...

Before I even read your commentary, I could hear Woody saying "Reach for the sky!" as I saw that cake. Mostly because my 4 year old is on a crazy Toy Story kick right now and 1 of the 3 movies are on our TV at any given time and she is even known to be saying "Reach for the Sky!" around the house randomly.

Donna said...

I'm so happy they spelled it Bonner...the WHOLE meaning would have been different without that extra n...

I have a "gift" for seeing what is *supposed* to be there, so that Bonner cake I had to read twice to see Bonner and a third time to catch the Congratutions.

vw: dessersh "Cake. It's what's for dessersh"

Congratutions, everyone!

Reach For The Sky Banner!

Anonymous said...

It's official. I spend far too much time at Disney World. My eyes were immediately drawn to the center of cake #2 as my brain excitedly registered the not-so-hidden Mickey.

Gloom Raider said...

I'm pretty sure if you say things like that to Banner, he turns into the Hulk. Bad move, Wreckerator. bad move.

Emily said...

Am I the only one that thought this post was going to be Toy Story wrecks?? V. funny nonetheless!

Becky Lancaster said...

Just wanted to share something funny with you. Monday was my daughter's birthday. My father-in-law was going to get her a small cake. They didn't have small cakes so he got cupcakes (all glued together in a rectangle...why they were glued together, I know not). He asked them to write her name on them. They said they couldn't because....get this...the cupcake icing would cause the writing icing melt/disintegrate. Riiiight, that's what I want my kid eating. Nothing like toxic sweets!

Another banner day here at Cake Wrecks. ;-)

Peaceful Mommy Kayleen said...

As soon as I read your title, I heard Woody's voice. One of my favorite movies. :)

Annie said...

Maybe the graduate's name is Bonner?
Still doesn't excuse the congratuations, though.

Adorably Dead said...

Maybe he was congratulating Bonner on graduating with his class? :p

Jennifer said...

Nathan Fillion... yummm... Even better then cake! :-)

elissa said...

I would totally reach for Nathan Fillion. Where is he?

Jes said...

What cakes? All I heard was Nathan Fillion. Castle is the best!

BP said...

*looks at congratutions* *MAKES BIG EYES AT PREVIOUS CAKE* *dies laughing*

Anonymous said...

Bonner is the name of a Catholic boys high school in Pennsylvania. But there is no excuse for butchering the first part of that!

Jason Glor said...

When I read the title in my RSS feed, I actually thought it was going to be a post of Toy Story Wrecks.

Reach forthe, sky! (Banner)

jbrecken said...

"Reach for the sky, Banner!"

"Be careful, Woody. Threatening me might make me angry, and you wouldn't like me if I'm angry."

SaraCVT said...

My goodness--I didn't think there was yet ANOTHER way to spell "Congratulations"...but you guys found it! Maybe we should start a drinking game....

(Oh, and good call on Nathan Fillion. I really could care less about Johnny Depp, but the Cap'n will ALWAYS have my undivided attention. But, then, I'm a geek.)

Rainyday said...

Yep, yep, yep for Woody, Johnny and Nathan!

Anonymous said...

I asked my kids, if someone told you to 'reach for the sky', what would you do?

Three pairs of hands went up in classic 'stick-em-up' posture.

And then I had to explain what the cakes really meant.

Philip said...

On that last cake, I'm wondering if maybe "Bonner", the graduate, has gotten a scholarship that pays his/her tuition, thus the "Congrat" on the "(t)uition"?
No?
Well, anyway, nice embed of Woody!

absolutahnie said...

this is awesome! today is my birthday so i'm going to be thinking "reach for the sky!!!!"
(in woody's voice, no less!) as i
blow out those damn candles! thanks so much for the laughs today!

Anonymous said...

I like that there are whistle blowers in the cake decor industry. If I was involved in a similar debate over semantics and/or taste and lost out to the knucklehead party, I'd have to say something, too. I got the Woody line right away, but the fact that you are in contact with "the industry" is hilarious.

The Shenaniganizer said...

Oh, were there cakes in this post? The only thing I remember seeing is the name NATHAN FILLION. *swoon*

Anonymous said...

Ah, could the last one be for the graduating class of Bonner Springs, KS?

No?

Ah me.
LittleRed1

wv: minsand. Well? Mins and what?

Lizzy Leigh said...

LOL, I read it in Woody's voice before you even mentioned it.

SaraCVT said...

Congratutions, absolutahnie! Happy Berfday, and reach for the sky!

Anonymous said...

@LittleRed1--

mins and secs of course, adding up to hrs of fun

wv: exhil-- these wreckerators should be sent into exhil

Melinda said...

I totally heard Woody's voice when I read the first cake.

As for the second cake, maybe it was made for David Banner from The Incredible Hulk, although the message is rather confusing. Are they congratulating him on getting arrested by the sheriff? Maybe it's a sarcastic message, and they "forgot" the quotation marks. At least being arrested via cake means, well, there's cake.

KCWC said...

Did someone say Nathan Fillion?

Shiny!

Anonymous said...

You've started my morning off with sexy thoughts of Johnny Depp. Which is really no different from any other morning for the last 6 years, but thank you for mixing some plastic cowboy and 'Woody' into it ;)

Craig said...

Maybe the meta-message is, "This is a stickup. After I collect your valuables and leave, feel free to enjoy some cake." Now a really clever crook would provide donuts, thus ensuring no police pursuit.

I wonder if John (thoJ) is experiencing consternation because of all the lol-ing. Or does it only count if it is capitalized?

BTW, it would appear the 'stars' contingent was right. Apropos of nothing, are there any wrecks featuring stars?

amyandtenaya said...

who wouldn't think of woody when they hear "Reach for the sky", lol

Kahla said...

Totally expected to see Woody and the gang when I opened this post... should have known better! ;o) I just don't get how the mistakes are made! Maybe they are trying to make Cake Wrecks?!?!

Anonymous said...

in all fairness --the kid's name COULD be Banner.... yeah right!

May said...

I said in that same voice too before I clicked the audio link! XD

Anonymous said...

I'm waiting for a "Congrads, Grats" cake. :D

Maybe you should publish that any wreckerator who puts "Nathan Fillion" or "Johnny Depp" on a cake gets a free pass- no matter what goes wrong! Wouldn't it be hysterical to see how many cakes would end up with random pics of them or even just their names?? LMAO

I work at a DQ, where that exact cake was on our graduation cake displays. Every time I saw it I thought of Woody, and I laughed.

Arlene said...

All I can say is..why???? If they can't use the kit properly or read directions then it is probably time to try a new job.. I would die laughing if I had that at my graduation party..

Jessica said...

Those "Reach for the sky" cakes are actually a kit and that's what the banner says in the demo picture. But I thought the same thing when I first saw it, "Isn't that what old time gangsters used to say when robbing a bank?"

K said...

I too saw hidden Mickey Clouds. Awww... especially the second cake. I'll forgive lots of Mistakes if Mickey is on it ;)

The second and third one need to be in a Cake Wrecks book, if they aren't already!

I definitely heard Woody, even before I pushed play.
