Oh, and now that I've got you all pumped for a con, I should note that there really *is* a scifi convention in Orlando this weekend, and John and I are totally going. See you there, fellow Florida geeks!

We're taking my 13-year-old son and three of his friends for his birthday party. My son made his own costume and parts of the ones his friends will be wearing. They'll be dressed as a group they made up. So, if you happen to see four youngish teens wandering around together dressed in home-made costumes you don't recognize, you could say, "Happy Birthday, Malcolm!"

I'm pretty sure that Buzz Lightyear cake was presented at opening night at the Boston Gay Theatre's production of Toy Story.

Shatner FTW! (Although nothing can beat his rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"!)

My daughter and I have been to enough cons that I can say, there is no exaggeration in this advertisement. That is exactly what they are like, both in advertising and in reality...

O...M...G!

Thank you for sharing that William Shatner bit. I will never forget it. (And will likely waste much time at work today making everyone I know watch it!)

That's some Shat his dad says right there.

Anonymous said...

I think all these wreckerators were high [long inhaling puff] as a kite! I think it's gonna be a long, long time before we see a decent cake.

Spock and Leia--that's awesome! Be even better if she was in the slave outfit.

The Disney Princess cake should have been delivered to the Drag Festival (the one that has nothing to do with fast cars) because there's no way those are chicks.

I don't think that's Val Kilmer's Batman, but it does look a bit like Adam West, the original Batman and current Mayor of Quahog.

The bad Buzz Lightyear attempt doesn't look much like The Shat to me, but any excuse to post the Rocket Man video is okay by me! Come on, Bill, quit bogarding that thing and pass it around. I actually remember watching that broadcast when I was a kid and long before "WTF" became a thing, I was thinking it! Even then, I thought the effects were uber cheesy, especially when the Transporter malfunctions and his right arm temporarily gets beamed away.

Oh, and get ready for backlash from Muskogeegans. Muskogeeans. Muskogogeeites. People from Muskogee.

Love the whole post today, but I keep getting stopped at the Picard wedding? cake. Is kissing 'The Picard' some new tradition at weddings? Is the happy couple in search of the captain's blessing on their marriage? Intriguing as those ideas are, I still don't think I'd be willing to hack into any part of him after all the cake pics had been taken. Jus' sayin'.

Thanks as always for the laughs. Once again, you've made my day.

Laura P. said...

I wonder if Hugh Jackman has seen that Wolverine cake. *shudder*

And please, please tell me that that sword picture was not supposed to be the inspiration for the cake that followed. Heck, a 5-yr-old could do better!

And I'm totally digging the big blob of white frosting underneath Leia and Spock! lol! I mean, seriously? They couldn't have used just a bit less frosting?

Doesn't quite sound like my kind of convention. Totally wishing that I lived in FL right now, though! I hope we see pics on epbot of the real con! :-)

Wow. I don't know if I should be honored or horrified!

My friend just told me to check out Cake Wrecks. Spock and Leia are from our wedding and it is was our groom's cheese"cake". I have no clue how this picture got out. I got the figurines as a special inside joke for my husband. He's the Star Trek fan, I'm the Star Wars fan, and I know ... never the twain shall meet. But we did. And got married in spite of it. ;)

I love the tag line. And everyone's comments.

@Classic Steve - Spock is bigger than Leia because it was hard to find two action figures of the same height in 30 days. lol.

@pikkewyntjie "Spock and Leia--that's awesome! Be even better if she was in the slave outfit. " lol. Um. NO.

@Jen "Spock and Leia! WHAT? That doesn't even go together." EXACTLY. Love conquers all. :)

@Laura P. "And I'm totally digging the big blob of white frosting underneath Leia and Spock! lol! I mean, seriously? They couldn't have used just a bit less frosting?" Ouch. Well, I guess it would have looked less odd if I hadn't just picked up a normal cheesecake and "wrecked" it for true love.

@pdxnico "Are Leia and Spock on a flan "cake"? The Star Wars and Star Trek universes battle it out in wedded bliss atop a tasty Mexican dessert, my mind is officially blown." haha. Outside of the Flan, that's exactly it.

Ok, folks, I'm done. :) Live long and ... may the Force be with you?

Aww, we're not picking on Muskogee. Jen asked me for the name of an out-of-the-way place and I thought of Muskogee. It just sort of popped into my mind. We added the county because it sounded even more remote. That said, you have to admit it would be awesome if this convention came to Muskogee.

Interesting note: I say "Muskogee" with a distinctly Canadian accent.

True story, and i don't know if anybody's said this yet since I don't like to delve into the comments too much, but there is a (pretty bad) cartoon movie called "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" that William Shatner recorded the theme song for. I know. Why did I even let him near it? Moral of the story -It was a one layer bundt cake in the beginning. It was most certainly two by the time he had helped me.

For a minute, I hoped that the first line actually meant you were going to be in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Alas, it seems that you, like so many others, only picked my home town because it sounds funny and/or is in an old country song.

For the record, 99% of Muskogee County residents hate that song. How about next time you try an even funnier Oklahoma place-name? We have a Potawatamie, Okfuskee, Lotawata, and even a Hooker, OK. Or you could always try getting over the depression-era stereotypes.

@ Jenna - I've actually never heard a song with the name Muskogee in it. You're right: I just thought it was a funny name. Which seemed appropriate for, you know, a humor blog. ;)

I also had no idea there was a depression-era stereotype that Muskogee residents enjoyed scifi conventions. What are the odds?

Anyway, thanks for the other name suggestions - I'll file those away for future reference. (I especially like Potawatamie.)

Craig said...

Ok. My Dad was born in Muskogee. People say I get my sense of humor from him. Note the phrase, 'sense of humor'. I always bring that with me when I visit Cake Wrecks, because Cake Wrecks is a *humor* blog. It isn't a formal information resource like Wikipedia (is for some people, but not John (thoJ), who has learned his lesson, one hopes).

Know what I think of songs, blogs, etc. sending up Muskogee? It reminds me of the funny stories my Dad used to tell about his hometown, and I smile.

Smiling helps me see the lighter side and helps me avoid ascribing evil intent to every utterance by others -- there is more than enough real evil in the world that I don't have to go around fabricating still more.

By the way, I haven't had time to check the Exhaustive Encyclopedia of Games (unabridged version, by Edmund Welles), but those dice might be wrong. Just thought you should know.

And Hulk #1 sure is happy. Maybe someone sprinkled some sugar in his gamma rays.

The guest star from Buffy... you were referring to Hinton Battle, right? a.k.a. "The Coolest Demon Ever"?

Oh my, too too funny, per usual. There was already an overload delicious wreckiness to chew on and then you added the Shatner video too. It was so cringe inducing I had to stop it 3/4 of the way through. I tried to watch it all, I really, really tried, but it was just. too. painful!

So thank you @Miss Mindy 11:25am for the link to "Wolverine: The Musical". I howled with laughter. "I'm gonna slice and dice my toubles a-way-ay-ay-ayyy" FTW!

wv: hariz - Hariz gonna be shocked by Voldemort's takeover of Captain Picard's head.
