However.
I've never - ever - seen someone sue a baker for over $4,300 over a misspelled name on a $55 cake.
If you can't see the video because you're at work, count yourself lucky. Frankly, I was ready to bash my own head in after the first three minutes. That lady gives crazy a bad name.
Oh, and here's the wreck in question - or at least part of it:
The judge reads the baker the riot act over the cracks in the icing, but also points out to the mom that if you saddle your child with a ridiculously spelled name (it's pronounced "Kiesha" but spelled "Keshia") then you pretty much have to expect people to screw it up for her entire lifetime. And so stop sweating the small stuff already.
Good advice all 'round, wouldn't you say?
Oh, and if *I* were that baker, I think I'd have replaced the cake with something a little more appropriate:

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 214 of 214 Newer› Newest»I have a name that takes the cake in crazy parents trying to be unique when naming their child.
My children go to school with a girl named La-a...... the dash is supposed to be pronounced....
Seriously, she sued over the NAME? Uh-uh. While the bakery should've checked, that's not too big a deal. The cracks, on the other hand?
If the baker wouldn't reimburse her for the cake, that'd be one thing, but you shouldn't ask for the entire party. Besides, it's a boring sheet cake. The cracks are ugly and ridiculous, but the name? Your fault, psycho mom. I've got a reasonably uncommon name (People are prone to spelling and pronouncing it "Alexia" or "Alexis"), but while I correct people constantly on pronunciation, I really don't make a big fuss afterward. Though I have gotten a lot of laughs over the Health Room nurse who wrote Alexisa when I told her there was an "a" at the end.
I feel sorry for the couple- that mom is CRAZY, but the bride looks almost embarrassed to be there a couple times, and the fiance deserves credit for coming to court with this. Run, you two, run!
I love Judge Milian! Yelling at the crazy people telling them they shouldn't have kids because they can't handle the small stuff.
Is it me or does the mother of the bride look like she has something up her butt? Like she does not smile ever in her life. Her frown is just constant. People like that bug me.
Dear Kind White People of Cake Wrecks,
Kesha
Keesha
Kiesha
Keisha
and in this case
Keshia
Is not an odd name. It is, however generally a name used by Afrian-American families. Which, I suppose for many of you, might make it odd, but the fact that this family in the video is using it makes me wonder if the name is a little less "ethnic" than even I thought.
I had never seen it spelled like that but she specifically said she told the lady how important it was to her. And the lady agreed that it had come up.
An engagement is, if you're lucky, a once in a lifetime moment. And the mom deserved her moment of persnickety perfection, especially since she made a point of mentioning that it was her pet peeve.
4,300 lawsuit is a bit excessive, but I didn't like the way the business people just kind of shrugged off her complaint either.
I don't know how many people watch People's Court but I wonder if the bakery will suffer more damage thanks to actually appearing on this terrible show instead of just coming to some monetary agreement. They've now shown that their product comes out cracked and misspelled, that doesn't look good for the company, more so than being found correct on principle.
Dear ThatDeborahGirl,
I don't believe we ever said that Keshia was an odd name.
Frankly, it's a perfectly lovely name.
However, from what I can tell, you agree that it is an odd spelling when you consider that it's pronounced "Kiesha" but spelled "Keshia." Not a wrong spelling, mind you, but perhaps a bit unexpected.
On another note, that's an interestingly presumptive way to start a comment. I know of quite a few people of color in the Cake Wrecks community. Personally, I like to think of myself as a slightly blotchy shade of pink.
Please have a wonderful day,
john (with a silly silent h)
I'm surprised they didn't spell it with a dollar sign, like pop star Ke$ha. I would have done that just to piss her off.
If I'm taking down someone's name, I always ask them to spell it, even if it's a common name, because you should never take anything for granted.
Look very closely at the photo! There is an "i" before the "a", but it is obscured because of the crack. Totally bogus, they DID spell it right to begin with!
A new student came one day with the name VyVyon. I called her "Vivian" and was told that it was "Vye-on" and that the Vy was silent. Yes, but which one????
If the spelling was that big a deal to this woman, shouldn't she have perhaps, oh, I don't know, WRITTEN IT DOWN HERSELF?!?! Supplied a card to staple to the order maybe? This is what bugs me the most about stupid names; people get so pissy about it, like it's your fault the world has stopped spinning because you spelled their precious individual's name wrong. Funniest part they're usually the most boring people on the plaet anyway.
spam word: aphemea, sounds like one of these names.
If I'd taken everyone to court who'd spelled (or mispronounced) my name so far, I wouldn't have spent a day OUT of court.
And for the record, the 'correct' spelling of my name (if there is one) is Keisha. My mom screwed it up too.
Okay, I couldn't watch the whole thing. Everyone involved was being annoying, especially the judge! Please tell me the person suing didn't get anywhere near that $4300, but just the cost of the cake.
My name being Sarah I understand that people could spell it wrong without an h like some do, but when they are replying to me on facebook or myspace and my name is right in front of them they should spell it right.
If a baker is supposed to put something specific on the cake and is told about it then they should make sure they do that right. She should've gotten money back and money for her troubles would be nice.
I don't know if you guys caught the moms lies. She changed her story a few times.
I used to work with a lady named Deborah. No, not pronounced "Deborah", pronounced "Duh Borah" as if it's two words. Ughh so ugly.
I have known keshias, keshas, keyshas etc.
i know a girl named julia who swears its pronounced "jewel ya" and doesn't understand why no one pronounces it that way.
weird. but anyway.
name your kids whatever you want as long as it's not offensive, if you think its a beautiful name then go for it. but people close to you should learn to spell it right and make sure bakers get it right. my daughter is not even 1 yet and her name is mispronounced and misspelled. It's a normal word but not so normal name.
Wow...I can't believe how crazy people get over petty details!
Yeah, it can be frustrating when people don't get your name right. I actually have a pretty normal name (Lori) but for some reason almost no one spells it right and no one can remember it. Most people think I'm Lauren, Lisa, Linda, etc...and one who insisted I was Julie.
But instead of getting ticked off about it all the time I finally just turned it into a joke - as long as it's not on official paperwork I don't care if it's spelled wrong and I tell people they can call me anything that starts with an "L" and I'll probably answer! Life is just too freaking short to go all frothing at the mouth over something so minor in the grand scheme of things!
