Let's Go There and Back Again

Saturday, April 16, 2011

On the off chance you haven't heard, Peter Jackson released his first video blog from the set of The Hobbit this week. And it. Is. AWESOME.

So to celebrate, I'm doing a special double Sweets feature this weekend. I was planning all book-inspired Sweets anyway in honor of National Library Week, so just consider today an extra Tolkien Treat.

First up, a Hobbit-inspired beauty made by CW reader Natalie F.:

I love that she included Bilbo's book, There and Back Again!

There are quite a few gorgeous Hobbit hole cakes out there. These are my favorites:

Submitted by Stacey S., made by Kiarane (lots of progress pics at the link)

Love the grass roof and the realistic "aging" on the walls.

The perfect green door:

Found here, made by Rebecca. (Hit the link for more angles)

Less realistic, but just as adorable:

By Tartsmulan

So sweet!

This hobbit hole comes with a garden:

It's hard to see all the detail here, so check out these close-ups:

Tiny carrots & lettuce heads ftw!

Plus, look how cute Bilbo is:

Gotta love his big feet. :)

And, last but not least, here's a truly awesome Smaug:

By The Cakerator

Complete with a little Bilbo!

All I can say is WOW.

Well, hope you enjoyed the Middle Earth munchies! Stay tuned for more Sweets tomorrow. Now, I'm off to watch Jackson's vlog for the 5th or 6th time. (Awww yeeeeeah.)

When my husband wakes up, I'm going to show him that last cake...and remind him that my Birthday is coming up in a month...

Those are cabbages, not lettuces.

All those cakes are awesome, but the Smaug cake...I have no words. And, to be perfectly honest...I cried when I saw the vlog and saw Bag End again. *sniffle* I'm such a geek/nerd/MiddleEarthObsessedPerson.

Where's the birthday cake for Gollum, preciousssss?

Jackson's vlog put the goofiest smile on my face when he posted it (YAY GANDALF!), and you just brought it back with these Hobbit sweets. My b-day is in two weeks; time to start leaving the hubby hints about cake themes...

Thanks for taking time out of your off day to brighten all our days! Tolkien ♥.

Ohmygoodness I'm just as excited to devour every bit of Middle Earth Geeky Trivia Stuff that I can get as I would be to devour those lovely cakes! But then....they're so cute.... Thanks for the link!!!!

*squee* I didn't know his video blog was up...see what I learn when I check CakeWrecks on Saturdays just in case? You are my primary nerd vector! Woot!

And I agree with the other top comments there that he please not do the movie in 3D. It's a re-hashed fad and I don't want to get queasy!

Absolutely adorable, all of them! I've been a Tolkein geek for nearly 40 years and I just can't wait for The Hobbit movies to come out!

Thanks for the link to the Hobbit video! Can't wait to see that movie!

Hi, my name is Tink, and I'm a addict...

((You respond in unison, "Hi Tink".)

I haven't been able to tell my family or friends, but I LOVE EVERYTHING LOTR!!! I have been an addict since my husband introduced me 5 years ago. He doesn't even know the extent of my addiction.

There I said it...please be kind when you judge me.

(Love the post!!!)

These cakes are amazing, but I personally believe carrots have no place on a cake without babies riding them.

I'm seventeen and single, but I've already decided what my wedding cake needs to be: Bag End, with Sam carrying Rosie across the threshold. (Adorable!) I hope it can be as beautiful as these hobbit hole cakes, especially the first one. (And I hope I marry a geek!)

Jules said...

omigosh... the Smaug cake... all that comes out of my mouth is some strange, unintelligible combination of consonants and vowels. O_o I think that cake would totally get hoarded by a dragon.

So excited for the Hobbit!!

WV: "crossi" (cross-eye): all of the magnificence of these cakes makes me feel all crossi.

Bilbo reminds me of Mossop from The Riddlers!

Paul McCartney?

the last hobbit hole cake is actually samwise's home i believe

wv: congonal: if your mind is as far in the gutter as mine you will figure out what congonal makes me think of..... (hint replace the second o with a different vowel and replace the n with a different consonant... or maybe it's just me.....)

The cake with the garden looks like the hobbit hole (Sam's house) from the last scene in LOTR - are you sure that's Bilbo sitting there and not Sam?

Regardless - it's pretty awesome.

Agree 100% with what

Fabulous post; there just aren't enough Tolkien' inspired goodies out there for me! Loved all of the cakes, thanks for sharing them.

A fellow Tolkien geek.

oh this is so exciting. I just clicked my little cake wrecks quick link completely forgetting it was Saturday (as I do every Saturday) and was pleasantly surprised with SWEET cakes... which are my favorite. I mean, I love the laughs of the wrecks, but as an aspiring cake artist... I'm just in awe of the sweets on this site.

Absolutely adorable. :)

Honestly, How do you make wings like that with cake!?

HeatherG said...

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

This is the best Sweets ever! Thank you! And, the vid blog.... seeing Bag End felt like, I don't know... like going home again. I think I'm going to re-reading The Hobbit this week. Again.

I remember in middle school my mom made me a cake with the One Ring scripture with a little gollum on it :). Best birthday cake I ever had, I want to do stuff like that when I have kids.

How cute-cakes like that make me smile :D

the "Blog Her" ad is covering up half of the first paragraph

Lathrine said...

You know what started playing in my head when I saw that first cake? *hums*
The greatest adventure
is what lies ahead...

And now I'm going to get nothing done because I'll spend all day on youtube listening to songs from The Hobbit. Thanks, cakewrecks! :D

Hi Hobbit-Lovers!

That last Hobbit hole cake was made by me for my son's 9th birthday! I did model it after the last scene in ROTK, but I was just using it as a general model for a Hobbit-esque cake with a Hobbit-esque, uh, Hobbit.

Hope you guys like it. It was a blast to make!

Sam said...

So, I scrolled down and started looking at the (beautiful) pictures before I read the bit about the double Sunday Sweets post--I kept thinking, "Wow, Cake Wrecks has really developed some unforgiving standards for what's considered a wreck!"

;)

These cakes are fabulous! Now, if only I had a reason to get a cake....

I'm so glad you posted a link to the video blog because I didn't know that was up. I got giddy when watching it. I'm a huge LOTR/Hobbit geek!

Anonymous said...

Not to sound picky, but just thought I'd mention... I'm pretty sure that's Frodo on the last cake, not Bilbo.

Boon said...

I'm not so sure about that, "Anonymous." Why would Frodo be anywhere near Smaug? I think this particular Bilbo just looks like Frodo.

Maria B said...

Do people actually eat these cakes? I don't think I could bring myself to cut into one of these. They are just too pretty.

Maria_the_Oiler said...

That is indeed Bilbo, but the younger Bilbo version, and I can hardly contain myself waiting for the Hobbit to finally be done! And thank goodness Peter Jackson is doing it!!!!!!!!
