NASA wanted to do something special for all the lady astronauts of the world:
And by "special", I mean something big, flaccid, curving to the right, poised to explode into the dark recesses that are out of this world, and that says "Women in Space: We've Come A Long Way".
[biting lip] Wow. So many innuendo-laced jokes, so little time. And if my mom didn't read this blog (Hi, Mom!), you can bet I'd be saying something about the fallacy that men can't organize - much less erect - a project of this size. Or how nice it is to see NASA giving women the upper hand in the space program, so that they, too, can get ahead. In fact, I'd probably wonder aloud if it wasn't rather cold in the exhibit hall, if that wouldn't put too fine a point on it.
However, since my mom *does* read this blog (Hi, Mom!), all I'm going to say is this, and to the cake creator: don't take my good-natured ribbing too hard. The fact that you got a government agency to pay for your services makes you a Wreck star.
And for you deprived souls who didn't get the FotC reference, watch this:

UPDATE: For you doubting Thomases calling "photoshop" and getting John all aggravated, here's another photo of the same cake:
Clearly, I need to get him out of the house more.

That is all.
Cake Wreck mixed with FOTC? Heaven.
I think the woman in the first picture behind the cake is wiping her eyes with a tissue. She obviously thinks like we do and can't stop laughing. I literally LOL at your blog. I love it!!
If you click on the first image, you'll see a poster in the background. I'm betting that's a "G" missing from the beginning. LMFAO, thanks for the chuckles
O MY GODDESS! Sending massive love (er...) to the ladies at NASA. The sheer upright volume of testosterone they must deal with boggles the mind.
Goes to show that men with access to higher education are still just as much work. Dern...are there any Gentlemen out there - at all? I suspect this dearth might be what's fueling the ambition of woman at NASA to search the void, lol...sob. YOU GO GIRLS!
wv: fableda: it is fableda that gentlemen DO exist - if you are willing to look, er, Hard enough. Snap!
AWESOME cake! But yeah, like someone said, I wouldn't want to see that get cut...*protects my cake*
And unfortunately, while it would be funny if the poster said Girth, it actually says Star Birth, which can be seen in the second picture.
You call that flaccid???
Oh golly. Oh maword. This is the most delightful thing I have been exposed to (zing!) in several weeks.
The FOTC love-fest going on in these comments is an added, um, perk.
wv: scoma - scoma way with me, in the night... (may as well invite Norah Jones to the party. Woohoo!)
I just found your site and have spent the last hour hooting with glee -- wonderful stuff. About this cake (the Space Shuttle Cake) - as it happens, I saw that one in person. It was part of a NASA-sponsored celebration for a major anniversary of the shuttle program. There were 15 or 20 cakes, all invited, all professionally-done, including this one. It was actually fairly prestigious to have a cake included. The venue where they were displayed was the National Air and Space Museum (I worked there for many years).
That cake was 100% real, no Photoshopping involved. The liquid fuel boosters (the white ones) were solid white chocolate. I think that main tank was actually made of milk chocolate, and it got a little warm over the course of the event and started to... ahem... sag.
After the displays were taken down, some of the cakes wound up in the staff break room. I helped consume one of those white chocolate liquid fuel rockets over the course of about 3 weeks.
(The less said about what became of the main tank, the better.)
Kalahari N.
Eep - just reviewed my last post and see that I had a brain blip while writing - the white tanks are the solid rocket boosters, not liquid fuel boosters. Gah. Sorry for the goof!
Kal
Is the tip of the shuttle smiling????
Wow. NASA knows how to please women!
Brilliant! Thanks for that laugh. :-)
mind in the gutter here people. mind in the gutter.
in the second photo, it looks like something is coming out of the top of the, umm, "red rocket" (any South Park fans?) yikes...
um THEY ARE RIBBED! love all the great comments but I keep looking at the photo and they're ribbed is all I can think of after the initial surprise that is.
Hey, Jen! That really reminds me of the sand castle wedding cake made in a *ahem* similar fashion!
you posted a flight of the conchords video in your post - I love you.
Did anyone notice if it had a cream filling?
I don't know what's better, this post & how hard I laughed at it. Or the fact that my Pastor at church heard my laughing so hard, read this post, & then laughed his butt off.
LOl..Conchords reference! Classic. xx
You described 'it' as "flaccid" but the dicktionary definition of this word is: "Soft and hanging loosely or limply.".... That 'thing' is at least semi-erect!
ok I know this one is old but I was browsing and HAD to comment. I mean. Really, what's wrong with a shuttlecock?
I realize this is an old post and also that I didn't read every comment to see if my question would be answered, but... did anyone notice that the shuttle is smiling?
(P.S. My CAPTCHA is "staft." *mgrin*)
You know, I'm stunned and I've seen Cake wrecks plenty of times. But Wow.
OMG I'm so happy to have found this site today and even more so to see the FoTC video and reference! Love them!
ps - ....my word verification to post this comment is vagnally which is mighty close to a word that would go great with this cake. lol
This isn't quite as sexy as the FotC link, but it's what I first thought of when I heard "this one's for the ladies".

Here's proof that even wonderfully made shuttle cakes look downright dirty:

That's the cake from one of Cake Boss's episodes that he made for NASA. :D
I must say, one of your finest pun posts ever. And that is saying something ;) Well done!
Ok, I always loved this blog but the fact that you know FOTC.... ahhhhhh love, love, love.
ummmm...hmmmm....well I was going to comment but I feel the need to go get a pack of smokes and I don't smoke. ;)
Don't let the "photoshop" accusations get you down. I once posted a video of a friend who happens to be a very talented guitarist playing Tom Russell's "Angel of Lyon". He does the solo section as well as or better than Andrew Hardin did when he backed Tom Russell. There was one particular person who accused me of "dubbing the sound in" and he could "tell" by looking closely at the video. Firstly, my friend really is that talented and secondly, I am not a film-makers and just would not be able to pull off such a feat of dubbing.
The fact is that people will swear up and down that something isn't "shopped" when it clearly and blatantly is and insist that something that isn't "is fake". Frankly, they can't tell their arses from their ears.
Remember the How I Met Your Mother when Ted makes that funny laugh every time he sees a naked woman?
Yeah, I'm making that sound now.
He (short e sound, like in egg)...he, he, he.
Remember the How I Met Your Mother episode where Ted made that funny laugh every time he saw a naked woman? He...(short e sound, like in egg)...he, he, he...
Yeah, well, I'm doing that sound now.
He...he, he, he.
Uh, wow!
1 the fuel tank and shuttle look like a penis
2 the lift booster look like vibrator
3 and I think the lady's right movement made this cake. just read text at bottom of the cake
4 I think the little lady figure is has some remote control toys in her pants. she just to happy!
