Sunday Sweets: Cartoon Cakes

Time for some heroes in a half shell!

By Lena's Designer Cakes

Cowabunga, dudes!

Ok, raise your hand if you saw the movie in the theater. As a teenager. With your mother.

What? Just me?

Ok, then, how about a Scooby Snack?

By crazebake cakes and cupcakes

That is fondant-free, my friends! Fondant-free, and fantastic.

This next cake is to make up for our Gummi Bears earworm post the other week:

Actually, that's a lie; I'm about to stick the song in your head again. (Brace yourself.)

Guuuummi Beeears!
Bouncing here and there and EV'rywhere!
High adventure that's beyond COMpare!
They are the Gummi Bears!
THEY ARE THE GUMMI BEEEARS!!

Here's a sweet detail shot, before all the figures were added:

Sub'd by Emily, and made by Liz of Artisan Cake Company (who gets special props for having an amazing airship/steampunk themed website. Love it!) Click the link for lots more great detail shots.

I know we weren't all raised on the great cartoons of the 80's and 90's, though, so here's one of them new-fangled shows, the Backyardigans:

(Baker unknown. Help me out?)

And from Invader Zim, here's an adorable GIR cake:

Submitted by Sonya P., made by Paula French (with help from Liz of Artisan Cake Company)

He loves tacos, methinks. Perhaps too much.

Another show I've never watched, but that seems to get the gosh-durned cutest cakes, is Yo Gabba Gabba:

By Alessia of Free Spirit Cake Co.

Someday I'm getting the toy yellow robot from this show, and you can't stop me.

It gets even better, too: check out these life-sized versions:

Sub'd by Justin G., made by Karren's Specialty Cakes

Actually, I'm just guessing on the "life-sized" part. Are they supposed to come up to your shins? And more importantly, does anyone mind if I hug the green mop guy? Yes? No?

Ok, enough kiddie cartoons. How about a little Futurama?

This is reader Denise G.'s wedding cake, y'all. Her WEDDING CAKE. (Denise, I believe my invitation must have been lost in the mail...)

Here's another shot:

And we can't forget the teensy little wedding cake between Fry and Leela:

(The figures are vinyl toys.)

Awesome!

And finally, let's end with everyone's favorite beer-guzzling slob:

D'oh!

The details here are just mind-blowing: look at the tiny books! And the tiny phone! And the giant, half-eaten donut! :D

Btw, I believe Erin is still recovering from an accident that severely injured one of her hands some months back. So Erin, we wish you all the best, and hope you're back to blowing our minds very, very soon!

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

  1. Yes, I saw Teenage Mutant Turtles in the theater, as a teenager (barely) but without my mother. Scooby was awesome. That Backyardagains cake was sweet. My kids love that show and it is one that my husband and I enjoy watching with them- as opposed to the shows that make us want to run from the room screaming, which we mostly don't let them watch. Love the details on Homer.

  2. OMG! I LOVE the Gir cake! So cute!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. I saw the movie in the theater, with my mother. And then went to the bookstore afterward and bought the novelization, which I immediately read. And reread multiple times over the following years (there's an extra scene in it that was cut from the movie).

  4. I love the Backyardigans one, even though that cartoon is reeeaally annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Those are awesome cakes! I love reading your posts every day. My daughter just turned 13 and I wish I had seen that GIR cake 2 days ago!!! Do'h!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yo Gabba Gabba, besides getting awesome cakes, is TERRIFYING. It defies normality and leaves me in a state of mind-blowing fright.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Some of us were raised on the great cartoons of the 60's and
    70's!

    Only me???

    Sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  8. A GIR cake? Love. The little rubber piggy on top is perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Just awesome cakes. Wow. I want that Gummi Bears cake for my next birthday and I'm going to be *cough* 46 years old.

  10. Saw TMNT in the theater, as a teen, with my whole family. Later purchased the cassette single of "Turtle Power" by Partners in Kryme. Played frequently while doing homework or jumping on the trampoline.

    Wow.

Thanks for the memories, and the gorgeous cakes!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I can top that! I was obsessed with New Kids on the Block (during the Ninja Turtles golden years) and went to the NKOTB laser show at the science center with my dad and little sister and her friend as a teenager. Sad...

I think this was my favorite Sunday Sweets yet. So many memories! Love the Futurama and Homer cakes!

You definitely have to check out Yo Gabba Gabba sometime. It's really trippy and goofy (and some of the characters look like adult toys) but the songs are cute and catchy.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The Turtle Cake? Honestly when I saw that..yes its well done..yes its well put together...gorgeous but...I think it needs to be put in the wreck area. Let me put it this way..you are a kid. You see the 4 turtles..with no arms, no legs...and their weapons infront of them laid about in a vaguely ready to eat sorta fashion..with plates (the white things at the bottom).

Like I said..I saw that and thought this musta been a 'wreck' day heh :). Maybe there should be a 'beautiful wrecks' day. All the nice and well done cakes that...are still freaky :P.

    ReplyDelete
  13. SueBee, I'm with you. Hence I saw the TMNT movie as an adult in the theatre, with my boyfriend. Yikes. These cakes are amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My son would think he died and instantly went to heaven if he got the GIR cake for his birthday...he LOVE LOVE LOVES GIR! MUST OBEY THE TACO MAN!!!

That being said, they are all so gosh darn cute!

    ReplyDelete
  15. My husband and I saw the TMNT movie in the theater as grown-ups (albeit youngish ones), without bringing any children with us. We were the only adults without kids in the theater...

  16. Awesome cakes!

Yo Gabba Gabba is the best. It's made by the singer of my favorite band, The Aquabats.

I totally have plushies of Plex (The robot) and Brobee (the green one). >.>

    ReplyDelete
  17. yo gabba gabba isn't a cartoon. it's a bunch of people in ridiculous suits. and it's awesome--if you want your baby who is too young to be watching TV anyway to have no brain anymore.

also, the lead singer of one of my favorite bands totally sold out by making it. turn off the idiot box" indeed. hmph.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Happy Birthday to me!

Thanks for the sweets today. They are just what I wanted! :)

I was raised with the great cartoons of the 60's and 70's, too. My daughter has just recently discovered Underdog! Woohoo!

Speed of lightning, Roar of thunder...

  19. I NEED that Futurama cake like I need the air I breathe.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Does that TMNT cake say it's for someone's 30th birthday?!?! 30!?!

    ReplyDelete
  21. That GIR cake is amazing! I love it so much! Must research tiny vinyl Fry and Leela while singing the Gummi Bears theme.

    ReplyDelete
  22. aww..Yo Gabba Gabba and The Backyardigans are two of my favorite cartoons! um...for my kids I mean :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. i just love the donut on homer's belly , that just makes it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I saw TMNT in the theatre as a teenager but I was with my Dad.

The Backyardigans cake is adorable but my daughter was all over the Yo Gaba Gaba cake (she may be the pink one, Fufa, for Halloween)

My favorite has to be the Futurama cake though. I love that show.

    ReplyDelete
  25. These are awsome, especially the Gummi Bears cake!!

Ironically, I've just returned from a trip to ultimate geeky 80s fandom...a Jem convention!! So I issue a challenge to thee...find me a truly outrageous Jem cake!!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. If I got that GIR cake, I wouldn't be able to eat it... Just... too... awesome!

As for TMNT, I'm pretty sure I was a few years shy of my teen years when I saw that WITHOUT my mother.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm sorry, but the Simpson cake just looks like the whole thing is made of Playdough. Well made, but inedible.
(But then I'm old and never got into the whole Simpson thing. On the other hand, I do like cake...)

  28. ninja turtles! im sure there was a grooms cake like that somewhere.
the yo gabba gabba is cool- how could anyone cut into that

  29. went into the bookstore yesterday and found a
    CAKEWRECKS CALENDAR!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. *stares at Livia cake* Woah, somebody stole my name! That was weird o.o

And I freaking looooove the gummi bears cake. That gets 2,000 awesome points ^.^

    ReplyDelete
  31. Squeeeee! The Invader Zim cake.... I neeeeeds it!

    I <3 Grr, he's so cute :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. The most awesome part is the TMNT Cake is for a 30 year old! That gives me hope that I may get a Puffnstuff cake for my 45th next year!!! :)

wv: shiddy - what these cakes are not!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I gave a copy of the Cakewrecks calendar to my local baker. He was puzzled at first, but soon the entire bakery was convulsed with laughter. I think you have several new fans.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What is most interesting about these cakes is the different ages they seem to be made for- I can't believe that the gummi bears cake is made for someone so young (does it say 5?). Do they even show it on TV anymore?

I was sincerely impressed with the TMNT cake- there have been a rash of Halloween costumes of TMNT in the last few years. I'm always happy to see a blast from the past- but no one ever includes Splinter (my favorite character) or Tokka and Rahzar (who I think are freakishly adorable for some odd reason)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I saw the Turtles in a theatre... I can't remember if I was a teenager. Let's leave it at that.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it when you have "fondant free" Sunday Sweets!! (I'm still balking at fondant)

Oh, and my grandson hates the Backyardigans, but loves Gabba. Got me. (personally, I have no TV)

No idea who/what GIR is, but once I figured out that 'it' was lying on 'its' side.. awesome!

Dude, awesome Turtles/Scooby, etc. I'm waiting for Tweety/Sylvester or Road Runner/Wile E Coyote when you mention 60's CARTOONS.

Thanks again for a sweet Sunday Sweets post. Sometimes one day CAN wipe out all the terror my eyes beheld Mon-Sat at this same site.

  36. I just want to know if the creator of Yo Gabba Gabba was in an adult store prior to creating that red creature cause I'm telling you ...

    ReplyDelete
  37. The first half of this entry was LOST ON ME because I wasn't allowed to watch cartoons (technically the rule was "anything with commercials). But when we got to GIR, I squealed. Then Futurama. Then Homer!

  39. The cakes are awesome (Homer especially) and I agree with Clara about Yo Gabba Gabba. I don't even let my kids watch it after seeing a few episodes though they still seem to know so many of the songs....no no no NO...oh great now I have a song in my head... "Don't...don't...don't bite yer frieeeeends!"

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had a flashback to the great Dueling Disaster Wedding Cakes Debate of '10, and had to laugh about the wedding cake in this group. I'm all about sci-fi. However, the spaceship cake, along with your commentary, made clear the double standard of what may be considered tacky. I think someone said (on the other post) something about wedding cakes being cool if they represent the personality of the bride and groom....

Yeah, I know it's all in fun....Just sayin', is all.

    ReplyDelete
  41. While cute, most of these were lost on me. I grew up on the cartoons of the 50s and 60s. (Crusader Rabbit anyone?) I've heard of TMNT and Scooby Do. I only found out that there was a Gummi Bear TV show when it was mentioned here a few weeks ago. I have watched the Simpsons and I've been forced to watch a few episodes of Futurama (for which I do not particularly care), but I have not ever heard of any of the other shows. I guess I'm old and I have no children/grandchildren. Life is sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Backyardigan cake is too adorable. I think it should be hidden from the eyes of all preschoolers, because it might make them want to watch the show. The show is the only kid's show I simply cannot bear to watch- the constant country singing drives me insane!

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOL, not only did I see the TMNT in theatres (I was way younger than a teen, though) I have them all on DVD. And watcht hem constantly. Love that cake!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Gir and Futurama cakes are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  45. OK, Jen. This is at least the 2nd time you've posted Yo Gabba Gabba cakes, and you still haven't watched it? Do yourself a favor and spend 20 minutes of your life watching one of the most bizarre things you'll see on TV. Especially try to catch the episode with Jack Black. Pure awesomeness.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yo Gabba Gabba is, without question, the most irritating show ever made on or near tv.

But on the other hand, the original TMNT and also Futurama are brilliantly brilliant, so I guess that balances the post out :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm too old to have gone to the movie, but when I spent nine months in the hospital, TMNT was one of my favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  48. EEK! I love the Futurama Cake!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Scooby says: Ru-roh! Rericious! Rerectable! Rummy!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would almost include Invader ZIM in the 'adult' cartoon grouping, if only because it is/was popular with older kids/young adults. That and it can get a bit hilariously disturbing. XD You should totally watch it. >_>

Can you TELL I loved the GIR cake? Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  51. After looking at Cake Wrecks every day for a year, I find it disorienting to see cakes that actually look like the characters they are based on.

Props to all the makers, and a speedy recovery to Erin.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I saw the Turtles movie in the theater with my kittle brother. He's 2 years younger than I am. I was in 7th grade I think. LOL We then ended up memorizing the whole film when we got it on VHS later!
My kids dig Yo Gabba Gabba. You can find a lot of their toys at Target. There is a Duplo set that has Plex ( the robot) with Muno ( the cyclops) with a car. You can make their arms flail with the push a button on their heads. the show itself gets tons of guest stars. Somehow, Tony Bourdain was one. Awkward moment there.

  53. I hear ya, SueBee. The days when neither the animation or the writing were done by computers. The days when the musical score consisted of actual music played by actual instruments, and included a number of classical works.

Obligatory PC disclaimer: I hasten to add that these cakes are cute and I am not even slightly offended.

I wonder if anyone has ever produced the 'Ruby Yacht (of Omar Khayyam)' in cake.

    Yes, I'm a gummy bear.

  55. WOW just awesome detail on the Gummi Cake. How does one even cut into such a great piece of work??

    ReplyDelete
  56. OMG- my son is a total yogabbagabba fan and I have hand made 2 gabba cakes- a muno (the red one) and a brobee (the furry green one) and his eyes just about popped out of his head when he saw the pro's cakes! I am thinking he is no longer impressed with my "imposters"! If I had to sit through gabbalive tour this summer, then I suppose I can pony up for a professional cake this time around! You made my son's day though!- Jana

    ReplyDelete
  57. I was so happy to see a nice, smooth cake without any fondant! I know people like it, but I detest the taste. Have you done a Sunday Sweets that featured all smooth buttercream (like the Scooby cake?) That would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  58. If these are made by professionals, they are breaking the law....
Can't sell those copyrighted items. Though they are AWESOME!

Sorry for the sugar "buzz kill"

    ReplyDelete
  59. I totally NEED that Gir cake. Or, I will explode from too much cute. But I won't eat Gir! I'll just eat the piggy, then make him say "WHY PIGGY WHY?!".

    ReplyDelete
  60. Dude. That Homer cake is out of control. That's a tiny puddle of drool, for heaven's sake.

    Incredible, one and all!

    ReplyDelete
  61. BEST.POST.EVER!!! I LOVE the GUMMI BEARS cakes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The reader who had the Futurama cake made ought to know that I am about to forward the picture to my friend who is the head writer for the show-- he will be absolutely thrilled. And jealous that he didn't think to have a cake like that made for HIS wedding!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh God, I had one of the biggest fandemoniums going on for the Ninja Turtles back in the early 90's. I've seen all three original movies and followed eight seasons of the cartoons. Ah, sweet days of adolescence gone by.

Now, show me a Thundercats cake and I'll be even happier. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. sorry to say that yo gabba gabba seriously scares me....

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the light blue drool on the Homer cake. Is that wrong? (blinkblink).

And maybe I'm just in need of more help than I care to admit, but I always think the red "yo gabba gabba" dude looks like a walking BOB (battery-operated boyfriend).

    ReplyDelete
  66. I was disappointed that Frye and Leela were toys, but still pretty good detail on the Planet Express ship and I liked the cute tiny wedding cake.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Aww that Scooby cake! And that Simpson's cake both are so good who would want to cut into them? Though I would steal Homer's donut and not feel at all sorry about it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think that Yo Gabba Gabba, as it is hosted by a DJ in a bright orange fuzzy suit, who can fly and make his toys come to life, would have fit riiiiiiiight into the 70s cartoons I watched as a child! You really should watch it if you haven't as of yet. But, I don't remember the Gummy Bears show, yet the characters look eerily familiar. Must go google years it was on...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm sorry, but, the gummi "beers"?? Hehe, check that first line, that made me laugh.

Loved the Futurama wedding cake, cuuute!! And of course TMNT are awesome, always. I saw it in theaters with my brothers.

wv: I'm "aningly" correcting your spelling, sorry! :P

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have to say the best part of that Turtles cake was that it was for a 30th birthday. Genius.

    ReplyDelete
  71. My husband and I went and saw all three when each came out.We were the only adults in line for the first movie who didn't bring any kids along.
Plex is the yo gabagaba robot.I think.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Is it just me or are Michaelangelo's nunchucks missing? But other than that, HOLY CRAP I WANT THAT CAKE!! :D These are amazing cakes, all!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am sure these have been answered by now, but ... Yo Gabba Gabba is actually live action - adults in costumes. However, you are right, it's the cutest/awesomest kids' show on tv right now. Plex (the robot) may be the central theme of my soon-to-be-three-year-old daughter's birthday party (bless her, she's our fabulously nerdy kid, and she can't decide between pirates and robots for her party... perhaps we can have a robot pirate party?) He's stinking cute. And Brobee (the green mop guy) is also just darling. You must watch the episodes with Jack Black and Sarah Silverman. Definitely a fun show for kids and adults.

As far as TMNT goes, I did not see it in the theater as a teen with my mom, but I did see it in the theater as a tween with my aunt. Does that count?

    ReplyDelete
  74. The Homer cake! Awesome! Best wishes for her continued recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  75. As soon as I saw the words "Gummi Bears" my head started singing.....thanks Jen, lol. I"ll be singing it all day now! (And now I kinda really want to watch the show! Why oh WHY are all the good cartoons gone?!?!)

    ReplyDelete
  76. I can proudly say that I also saw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the movie theater, as a teen, with my mom! :) And I played the video game at the arcade in the mall every Wed. night with my dad. G.E.E.K. Yup!
The Backyardagains was my favorite kids' show when my daughter was little! Love the cakes this week! Thanks guys!

    ReplyDelete
  77. The funniest thing about the simpsons cake is that those who aren't familiar with the show (a very small minority i know)would think the over sized donut is a mistake.

However the rest of us know that Homer would sell his soul for a donut like that (indeed he already did once for a smaller one). Still... where did he get one that big anyways?

    ReplyDelete
  78. @ Miss Hannah -- doesn't 'robot pirate' party mean it must be steampunk themed?

  80. Thank you for featuring Homer on Sunday Sweets! He was part of a display for Iron Cupcake Milwaukee: Beer Challenge, where the bakers had to incorperate beer into the cupcakes. I couldn't help but romance the idea of Homer passed out in all his slobbery man glory! The donut is meant to be huge (it's a real mini donut) basically adding to the ever overindulgent Homer. Homer is completely edible and made from gum paste...not that you would eat it (though it tastes better than fondant!) I love to put gumpaste toppers on buttercream cakes. That way the customer gets to keep the creations, yet still enjoy a yummy cake without worrying about the fondant.

I truly do thank everyone for the well wishes on the recovery of my hand. I can't even begin to express how much that means to me! It's been a very difficult struggle, both physically and emotionally, but I'm happy that I'm starting to get back into making cakes again. I'm not fully to the extent I was before, but so grateful that I didn't lose my three fingers entirely. I'm learning how to adapt to the loss of function, and find new ways to work around the disability. Again, thank you a million times!! I love reading the Cake Wrecks blog for the humor, horror, and inspiration :)

  81. I've never seen any of the current cartoons. I now know why my co-worker named her new puppy Gir.

  82. Ok, raise your hand if you saw the movie in the theater. As a teenager. With your mother.

    *raises hand*

I adore the Gummi Bears and Gir cakes!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I not only saw the first TMNT movie in the theater as a teenager (without my mother), but the second one as well (saw that one with my boyfriend). Geeks of the world, untie!

@Tchann, that's awesome. I have the novelization of 'Tron', which I have read way too many times to count. In fact, here's a geeky admission: I have a collection of movie novels!

I have a friend who will hyperventilate over the Futurama cake. I think I'd better get a paper bag before I show it to her.

I wasn't a fan of Gummi Bears, but I have to admit that cake is adorable. I like Jasmine's skirt!

@Rebecca--A Jem convention? Get OUT seriously?? I had the Jem/Jerrica and Kimber dolls as a kid. I could definitely see their funky colored roadster in cake.

I was a huge She-Ra fan back in the day. I don't know if there are such things to be found, but Sunday Sweets for those would be awesome. I could just imagine a Crystal Castle made out of cake! Heck, I'd even take a Castle Grayskull! /geek

  84. I watched the gummi bears when I was six and we found out my mom was having a baby I begged to name him kavin the little squire guy cavin helped the bears and the princess with their problems. all of our names start with k.
My two year old like yo gabba gabba its not the worst kids show I've seen I think its funny how many big name actors are vying for apperances on a kids show. Backyardigans however is not a show my little one has ever seen ten second of it and I had to change the channel, but they are cute.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yay! My Futurama cake made it into Sunday Sweets! The cake was so awesome that the caterers were afraid to cut into it- the entire Planet Express ended up in our fridge after the wedding. My husband and I ate spaceship for two weeks straight. Big props to Alliance Bakery in Chicago.

@annfoxlee please do send it onto the creators- I'd love to hear their reaction.

  87. I was totally singing the Gummi Bears theme song as soon as I saw the cake. :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. that TMNT cake is AWESOME! as for the yo gabba gabba guys, "life-sized" is actually human-sized, some even taller than the 6' (guessing?) host. i'm sure you CAN hug the green guy but that show is so annoying after 2 second of hugging you'd be over it. :)

  90. My husband is one of the cartoonists who draws the "Futurama" comic book. I called him in to see the "Planet Express" cake, and he was suitably impressed -- which is saying something, since he's had to draw the thing at nearly every angle dozens,if not hundreds of times.

However, we both agreed that something was missing: where was Bender? Wouldn't Fry have chosen him to be the Best Man -- er, Robot -- at his wedding? Then again, knowing Bender, he probably had absconded with the wedding ring and was down at the pawn shop making a few fast bucks off of it.

    Great job, nonetheless.
