Oscar's Sunday Sweets

In honor of the Oscars tonight, I've put together a collection of Sweets representing each of the top nominees for Best Picture.

[Opening envelope] And the nominees are...

The Fighter

By Palermo's Bakery

As Mal Reynolds would say: shiny.

Black Swan

Just imagine a much darker, hallucinating cake counterpart lurking right outside of frame.

Toy Story 3

By Iced Over

Lots more detail and in-process shots here!

True Grit

By mrm71

Not the best photo, but check out the amazing details in the brick, nails, and rope:

The Social Network

Found via @zfarmville, baker unknown

Oh, like you use Facebook for anything else anyway.

127 Hours

Granted, I went a little abstract on this one. If you want a better fit (and have a reeeeally strong stomach), then you could always go with this cake instead. But don't say I didn't warn you. ;)

The Kids Are All Right

Do Mr. Bump and Miss Giggles fit this title perfectly, or what? So cute!

The King's Speech

With cakes this gorgeous, it certainly is.

Inception

Made by Cory of Rosebud Cakes

Because Inception and Salvador Dali are a match made in heaven.
Or maybe just crazy dreams.

Happy Oscar-watching, everyone!

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

  1. I can't say I like that last cake but I admire the intricacy.

  2. Haha... my first thought when I started reading this was "I wonder what she is going to do for 'Inception'?" These are all wonderful, as the sweets always are. Sunday Sweets are such a great counterpoint to the usual content of the site-- definitely your second best web-related idea. :)

I wonder how many people are going to tell you they think you missed the point of 'The Kids Are Alright'? Hehe.

  3. Amazing. I love how, like with the Super Bowl, you don't really use cakes based on the actual event.(except for Toy Story 3. That movie made me cry at the end and now I just announced it to the world.)The "Inception" cake is beautiful.

  4. Those cakes are Fabulous

  5. You weren't kidding when you said strong stomach. Ick!

  6. Wow, they're all gorgeous! I looove the Mr Men/Little Miss cakes, they're just too cute for words :D

  7. Hmmm, not related to any of these cakes, I suddenly want a paradoxical cake for my birthday, ya-know like a four tier penrose cake, with an infinite staircase leading "up" to the next layer... or maybe a fondant covered model of paris folding on top of itself... bakers, here's your challenge...

    ReplyDelete
  8. I spit my coffee out at the Mr Men cakes - I WANT those for my birthday!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. A Firefly reference - as if you weren't already my favorite blog on the planet!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow, I finally went to look at the process shots for once, and I don't think I could eat the Toy Story confection.... too much work went into that for mere noms!

and in spite of the gross-out factor, the killer rats article is an education on multi-media dessert-making.

I agree with the commenter who said Sunday Sweets is your Second Best Idea Ever!

    ReplyDelete
  11. No "Winter's Bone" cake? I loved that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm really only commenting because my WV word is "ovens." No, really.

(Also, to make this slightly more relevant, I was really amused by the marshmallow packing peanuts on the "Toy Story 3" cake.)

  13. Amazing! Really nice.

Toy Story 3 is the only one I have seen but since a comedy has not won an Oscar since 1977, I'm not holding my breath.

    WV: cingle

Not a cingle one of these cakes was a wreck!

  14. OK, it's not quite a claim to fame but I ate one of these cakes! That Toy Story 3 one was made for my office at Empire Magazine. Believe it or not, it tasted as good as it looked - just amazing. It took us a week to eat the whole thing.

  15. That last one is AWESOME! So is the 127 hours cake. Too cool.

  16. Hi Jen!
All of these cakes were beautiful and...you're commentary ALWAYS cracks me up! :)

I must say...I check out your blog from my cell phone. Therefore, I have to scroll down to see the entire cake (can't see the entire cake in one frame). I can't believe you missed the fact that the top of that cowboy hat looks exactly like a... Ok. Just pretend you're scrolling down and cover everything except the top of the hat! :P

    LOL

I LOVED what you wrote about the Black Swan!!! Hahaha!!!

And I just want to give a shout-out to the commentor named "SHANTI". My cat's name is Shanti!

Thanks for making me laugh every single day!!!!
    --Bhakti

    LOL hahaha...just saw my wv
"miaquour" ROFLMAO! How did they know??? "Me a queer." Hahaha...I AM gay!! hahaha (seriously). :)

  17. I love 'em all...
One teeny nitpick: the crown cake, awesome as it is, replicates the Crown of St. Edward (the Confessor) which is known as the "Queen's Crown" since Elizabeth II favored it over the Imperial State Crown (aka the "King's Crown," higher in the center than the St. Edward) used by her father and the kings before him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow, pretty cool! The Toy Story Cake just amazed me, it's... awensome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the Toy Story 3 cake gets my vote. The little aliens are fantastic. I also liked the 127 Hours cake but it wasn't as detailed as the others.

ahhh LOVIN the Mr Men cakes..
    Kings speech rocked!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Can I just say this is the best collection of Sunday Sweets ever? I have no idea what 127 Hours was about (first time I've even heard of it), but that cake is brilliant. TS3--amazing figures!
    The Inception cake--whoa!

Just a thought, but because of you, Jen, these true artists will finally live on like the Dalis of the world because you've posted their artwork on your blog. Until now, all the artists using the medium of cake, icing, and fondont have been unknown and forgotten. Now they are known, remembered, and on the on the other days of the week laughed at.:-)

  22. That farmville cake looks good. The sheep and pig are adorable! I'd also eat the swan one....it looks as equally good. :P

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Firefly/Serenity reference!!
    Mandy

    ReplyDelete
  24. At the risk of an Epcot, you missed Winter's Bone, the tenth best pic nominee.

But these are all great! I love the Inception choice.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow, those are awesome. I love the one for "Inception" - definitely fitting! And I just like the one for "The Kids are Alright" just because it's Mr. Bump and Little Miss Giggles - love the Mr. Men & Little Miss characters!

The detail on the one for "True Grit" is so great! I love that brick - wow!

Thanks for sharing such gorgeous cakes with us!

  26. Holy BAKERY, Batman! These are masterpieces, I think I'd have a real issue slicing into anything that took that much work. Kinda makes the lemon bars I just made look awfully...mundane ('tho I can confirm they taste mighty good, and I've no trouble slicing into them).

    ReplyDelete
  27. I ADORE the Mr. Men & Little Misses cake! The Mr. Men Show is one of my daughter's favorite shows and we watch it everyday. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you so much for not actually posting the "strong stomach" cake directly on your site--GOOD NIGHT, that is awful! (But of course, very well done...)

There are some real masterpieces here--the crown doesn't even look like a cake, the detail on the Toy Story one is amazing, and I think the swan is my favorite for pure beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  29. great cakes!

WV: imake, as in; i make cakes that look nothing like those

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it would be hard to find a cake that would somehow relate to teenage girl who has to find her meth-cooking father...no matter how abstract and odd the connection.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Winter's Bone could be represented by a horse, a carafe of coffee, a squirrel, a rifle, jerky, or a log cabin cake. Any could work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. WTF? Toy Story 3 is up for best picture? Our standards for art have gone way down.

    ReplyDelete
  33. #1 I wonder if anyone else heard 'The Boxer' when viewing this.

    #2 Are those... daisies?

#4a Stanley must be one cool guy.

#4b It takes 'true grit' to drive nails into brick so they stay and without bending them.

#5 Oy. I've lost count of the number of FV requests I've received. Tried it once -- I've had more luck with real plants than with the virtual kind.

#6 It must have taken a lot of time to make that. Side note: Oh, yes -- *that* cake. I stuck around just long enough to read part of the description. For once, I am happy that some pages are slow to load on this system. The rat cake should have been called, 'Room 101'.

#8 Incredible. Props to Francesca for the Mel Brooks reference!

#9 How was that even sliced?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Amazing cakes AND a Firefly reference? This blog cannot get any better, can it?

I love that Inception cake. It fits with the movie pretty well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey!! That's MY swan cake!! This is my 1st time on Sunday Sweets. Thanks to whoever submitted it.

I've got better photos of it on my Flickr/FB pages and my site but whatev...I'm just happy to be on here at last!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love the birthday greeting on The Fighter! Ellen

    ReplyDelete
  37. OMG that inception/Dali cake has got to be the most amazing cake I have ever seen. I wouldn't be able to eat a cake that beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Craig - Not daisies...I believe they are lotus flowers.

WV: "aurnia" - Aurnia gonna explain all that stuff on the Inception cake?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I knew I loved this site for a reason, it has a fellow Browncoat writing it!! Your Firefly reference makes me smile! Love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jen...thanks so much for putting the better photo up.

    @Craig...they're waterlilies (aka lotus flowers)

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1) I actually don't play Farmville and ban Farmville spammers from my facebook feed :-p

    2) I love the 127 hours cake, but I think you might want to mention rats in the strong stomach note for the other 127 hours cake because we have a friend who freaks completely out over them (we warned him as he reads you religiously)

    3) OMG black swan cake!!! I love it. I would love it even more in black w/purple :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. methinks Sandra Lee could learn from the Toy Story 3 cake for the proper usage of marshmallows on a cake :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Those are so pretty. Loves the shiny, shiny gloves. Plus that crown cake really is gorgeous. Have no clues yet who won what but I a sure to find out soon lol.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Anonymous 8:33 & @Sally Bratt -- Lotus flowers. I suspected as much, but I decided to go with John's official default flower just to be safe. It's a guy thing. ;-)

@Alma -- agreed, but I suspect there would be a surplus of futility in attempting such an education. Nice to know that there are legitimate uses for marshmallows in cakes, though.

  45. MUCH prefer the clocks.....

  46. I administer the Mr. Men and Little Miss Facebook page and was so excited to see Mr. Bump and Little Miss Giggle cakes! Also very happy that they were so cute and not cake wrecks. I even posted a link on our page so all of our fans can come take a look: http://www.facebook.com/Mr.MenandLittleMissUS. Thanks!

  47. I'm with @Zoe Wannabe on this one!
I love this blog, and now even more so because the author is a fellow Browncoat!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. WV: waygo

C'mon, for Sunday Sweets I get "waygo"? How appropriate is that? "Waygo, decorators!"

Merry at Annie's Book Stop/Sharon, MA

    ReplyDelete
  49. These are totally unbelievable. Stunning dakes :-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow - great job compiling this Jen.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Even though the arm cake may be a little unsettling, you do have to admire the bakers attention to detail! I find it fascinating how she even incorporated skeletal structure into that cake!

    ~ Paul

    ReplyDelete
  52. Really? No Winter's Bone... A dog bone would've sufficed...

But to leave it out completely?!!?! Jeeeeeze
