Oscar's Sunday Sweets

In honor of the Oscars tonight, I've put together a collection of Sweets representing each of the top nominees for Best Picture.

    Haha... my first thought when I started reading this was "I wonder what she is going to do for 'Inception'?" These are all wonderful, as the sweets always are. Sunday Sweets are such a great counterpoint to the usual content of the site-- definitely your second best web-related idea. :)

    I wonder how many people are going to tell you they think you missed the point of 'The Kids Are Alright'? Hehe.

    Amazing. I love how, like with the Super Bowl, you don't really use cakes based on the actual event.(except for Toy Story 3. That movie made me cry at the end and now I just announced it to the world.)The "Inception" cake is beautiful.

    Hmmm, not related to any of these cakes, I suddenly want a paradoxical cake for my birthday, ya-know like a four tier penrose cake, with an infinite staircase leading "up" to the next layer... or maybe a fondant covered model of paris folding on top of itself... bakers, here's your challenge...

    Wow, I finally went to look at the process shots for once, and I don't think I could eat the Toy Story confection.... too much work went into that for mere noms!

    and in spite of the gross-out factor, the killer rats article is an education on multi-media dessert-making.

    I agree with the commenter who said Sunday Sweets is your Second Best Idea Ever!

    Toy Story 3 is the only one I have seen but since a comedy has not won an Oscar since 1977, I'm not holding my breath.

    OK, it's not quite a claim to fame but I ate one of these cakes! That Toy Story 3 one was made for my office at Empire Magazine. Believe it or not, it tasted as good as it looked - just amazing. It took us a week to eat the whole thing.

    All of these cakes were beautiful and...you're commentary ALWAYS cracks me up! :)

    I must say...I check out your blog from my cell phone. Therefore, I have to scroll down to see the entire cake (can't see the entire cake in one frame). I can't believe you missed the fact that the top of that cowboy hat looks exactly like a... Ok. Just pretend you're scrolling down and cover everything except the top of the hat! :P

    I love 'em all...
    One teeny nitpick: the crown cake, awesome as it is, replicates the Crown of St. Edward (the Confessor) which is known as the "Queen's Crown" since Elizabeth II favored it over the Imperial State Crown (aka the "King's Crown," higher in the center than the St. Edward) used by her father and the kings before him.

    I think the Toy Story 3 cake gets my vote. The little aliens are fantastic. I also liked the 127 Hours cake but it wasn't as detailed as the others.

    Can I just say this is the best collection of Sunday Sweets ever? I have no idea what 127 Hours was about (first time I've even heard of it), but that cake is brilliant. TS3--amazing figures!
    The Inception cake--whoa!

    Just a thought, but because of you, Jen, these true artists will finally live on like the Dalis of the world because you've posted their artwork on your blog. Until now, all the artists using the medium of cake, icing, and fondont have been unknown and forgotten. Now they are known, remembered, and on the on the other days of the week laughed at.:-)

    Wow, those are awesome. I love the one for "Inception" - definitely fitting! And I just like the one for "The Kids are Alright" just because it's Mr. Bump and Little Miss Giggles - love the Mr. Men & Little Miss characters!

    The detail on the one for "True Grit" is so great! I love that brick - wow!

    Holy BAKERY, Batman! These are masterpieces, I think I'd have a real issue slicing into anything that took that much work. Kinda makes the lemon bars I just made look awfully...mundane ('tho I can confirm they taste mighty good, and I've no trouble slicing into them).

    Thank you so much for not actually posting the "strong stomach" cake directly on your site--GOOD NIGHT, that is awful! (But of course, very well done...)

    There are some real masterpieces here--the crown doesn't even look like a cake, the detail on the Toy Story one is amazing, and I think the swan is my favorite for pure beauty.

    #1 I wonder if anyone else heard 'The Boxer' when viewing this.

    #2 Are those... daisies?

    #4a Stanley must be one cool guy.

    #4b It takes 'true grit' to drive nails into brick so they stay and without bending them.

    #5 Oy. I've lost count of the number of FV requests I've received. Tried it once -- I've had more luck with real plants than with the virtual kind.

    #6 It must have taken a lot of time to make that. Side note: Oh, yes -- *that* cake. I stuck around just long enough to read part of the description. For once, I am happy that some pages are slow to load on this system. The rat cake should have been called, 'Room 101'.

    #8 Incredible. Props to Francesca for the Mel Brooks reference!

    1) I actually don't play Farmville and ban Farmville spammers from my facebook feed :-p

    2) I love the 127 hours cake, but I think you might want to mention rats in the strong stomach note for the other 127 hours cake because we have a friend who freaks completely out over them (we warned him as he reads you religiously)

    3) OMG black swan cake!!! I love it. I would love it even more in black w/purple :)

    @Anonymous 8:33 & @Sally Bratt -- Lotus flowers. I suspected as much, but I decided to go with John's official default flower just to be safe. It's a guy thing. ;-)

    @Alma -- agreed, but I suspect there would be a surplus of futility in attempting such an education. Nice to know that there are legitimate uses for marshmallows in cakes, though.

    Even though the arm cake may be a little unsettling, you do have to admire the bakers attention to detail! I find it fascinating how she even incorporated skeletal structure into that cake!
