A Matter of Life and Death

Sure, the Oscars are this Sunday - but all *I* see is a handy excuse to quote one of my favorite movies ad nauseam.

Let's begin, shall we?

This doesn't bode well.

That's also the only Oscars wreck I have, so from here on out it's all booze, guns, and gangster talk. Woohoo!

Thank you. But don't call me "boss."

Hey, are you still packin'? Fork it over.

I mean that literally.

It's like disarming Germany.

If Germany had one giant icing bullet and a bunch of smaller, cupcake bullets, that is.

(What, you couldn't tell those were shotgun shells?)

(Of course I knew! I just had no idea!)

You're just saying that because of the guns. And don't call me "bosss," either.

For Dr. Poole ("'Allo!") we have this treasure trove of linguistic anomalies:

And such nicely rounded dipthongs.

In fact, I'd say these wrecks call for a celebration!

But don't worry; we only keep this in the house for yacht christenings.

Matthew C., Aimee W., DB, Jennifer W., Robert K., Rachael F., & Marian R., let me show you the door. THERE'S THE DOOR!

Oh, and if you're completely lost right now, I'd suggest starting here.

  3. "Oscar" is one of my favorite films, too! I thought Sylvester Stallone was hilarious. And I couldn't get over seeing Tim Curry play such a buttoned-up character--at that point I'd only seen him in "Legend" as the Prince of Darkness....

I love how they used two different spellings on that first Oscar/Oscor cake; just in case one was wrong, they'd be at least half right?

And thanks for reminding me that the Oscars are on Sunday--I'll have plenty of photos to peruse on Monday =).

  4. What does “Osrars” and “Oscors” mean?

On that last one, they almost did a decent job on the beer can even even if the can is a bit dumpier than it should be. Probably one of those printable things.

    ReplyDelete
  5. LOooOOooOoOoOoOoVVVEEEEE OSCAR!!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Looks more like barf than beer coming out of that can.

    ReplyDelete
  7. What on earth ...... O_o

  8. WHAT AN AWESOME MOVIE!!!!!! I LOVE OSCAR!

If someone else doesn't know this movie- they should totally go buy it and watch it tonight. It's on my favorite movie list!

    ReplyDelete
  9. "It's like disarming Germany", is still one of my favorite movie lines ever. :) Loved that today's post was Oscar themed.

    ReplyDelete
  10. And here my brother and i thought we were the only crazy people out there that liked Oscar!!! "Finuccis!....as you were." AWESOME movie!! :)

  11. I want an Oscar cake for Sunday now! Not an Oscor one, though...that would just be silly. What I'm wondering is...did the person who wrote the bosss's cake not know if he/she should use "you're" or "your" and decided to go for the gold and combine them?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE FOR LOVING OSCAR. One of my favourite movies of all time!

(What was "Amgbd You Homb" supposed to be, anyway?)

    WV: noncin
"Never witness noncin, you live longer." I heart Aldo.

  13. Lovely!!! Really enjoyed the references to Oscar, which is near the top of my favorite mad-cap comedy movies. "Deal with him. Expeditiously." Bwahahaha!

  14. design-wise, i like the last one. Pity about the color choice for the 'beer' though.
And the ... whatever that brown stuff on the beer spill is... isn't helping.

That 'hoppy bosss's day' one though - i get the vague impression of a frog and a snake from the odd spellings... not sure which animal is the boss though. Frog maybe? If so, very subtle passive-aggressive cake. Although the last you'r kinda makes me think i'm giving them too much credit.

  15. I love this movie!!!! One of my definite all time favorites that I can watch over and over and over and over ....

    Yay! This made my day!

  16. @anon 9:39 -- whaaa? Never seen T.C. in Rocky Horror Picture Show (Hey! Rocky v. Rocky) Poor guy never gets away from the lingerie jokes. "Oh, look. More lady's undergarments."

#4 - Mythbusters cake - ballistic gel in red plastic. don't know about cupcake bullets though.

wv: conterfu -- the technique convincing customers that the counter display wrecks are worth paying for

  17. Love the Boss'ss Day cake with it's other spelling challenges! (Does that make Boss'ss pronunciation: Bossusus?)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why are there pushpins in the corners of that last cake? Also, that beer looks too much like puke.

    ReplyDelete
  19. "If big Ant'ny were alive to see THIS..." He'd probably say it's Awesomestnessity. :0D

  20. Oscar has been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember, and this post just made me so, so happy. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  21. So much love for Oscar! Yay!!!!!!!

  22. "You've got a dangling participle!"

    ReplyDelete
  23. OMG!!! Just when I think I can't love this blog more, I find out you love Oscar too!

    ReplyDelete
  24. How about a round of applause for wreckerator #2 who, though he/she can't spell abundantly, clearly has a grasp on the greater problem of apostrophes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sandy C also in SoFlaFebruary 25, 2011 at 10:53 AM

lol, those "push pins" in the last cake are actually tiny fake beer cans. They're little plastic cake decoration flotsam.

And after Rocky Horror, no matter what roll I only see T.C. in bright red lipstick, merry widow and garter belt.

  26. OMG I LOVE THE MOVIE "OSCAR" TOOOOOO!!!!!!
So many good lines and cuteness about it!!!
Love all the actors in it too!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love that move. It took me a couple lines but then I got it. Anything with Tim Curry is good with me.

Side note:while I was readding this mt 3yr old came over looked at the screen and we had this conversation,

Daughter: Are those babies on the carrots?

Me: (blink blink..lightbulb)Yes! Yes they are.

Daughter: That's funny ha ha ha ha ha.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love Oscar! I thought I was the only one. I have it on DVD, too. That and Hudson Hawk are two very underrated films.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You win +5 million internet points for so perfectly incorporating 'Oscar' into Cake Wrecks. I love that movie! "Give my regards to the Kaiser."

    ReplyDelete
  30. "Oscar" has been a family favorite with us since we checked it out at the video store cause it looked good. We were wrong.... IT WAS AWESOME!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jen you are AWESOME! Love the Oscar references, that movie was hilarious and doesn't get enough credit for being so funny. I think quite possible the best line is one of the last...
    "I'm Oscar!"
    "Get rid of him...expeditiously!"
Awesomely awful cakes, as usual. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. ZOMG I love Oscar sooooo much! Fantastic, wonderful, clever post! Not that they aren't all fantastic, wonderful, and clever, but this post is my absolute favorite of them all!

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMGOMGOMGOMG I LOVE Oscar!!!!!! hahahaha You just totally made my day. Now I have to go home and watch it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I cannot tell you how much I love this movie!! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oscar is in my top five favorite movies. Marisa Tomeii was freaking hilarious in that. And most people never know what movie I'm talking about! How is this possible when it is so freaking funny? However, I do have one complaint about the movie. Every time I watch it, it bugs me that Tim Burton identifies where the accountant is from, WITHOUT HEARING HIM SPEAK! Watch it again, you'll see. I can only assume that they edited out the part where the two spoke to each other before that. But I love it anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oops, that should have said Tim Curry! I don't know why I wrote Tim Burton. This post got me so excited I can't write properly!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love the planning that goes into these wrecks, lol. Note the "We" all by it's lonesome...and then, "Think you'r Wonderful" all crammed into the next line. :D Good thing they left the "e" of "you'r" or they would have run out of room!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Who are you? I'm Oscar!
*aside* Get rid of him. Expeditiously.
    Or in this case extradeliciously.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Love, love, love that movie! And so many of the commenters are right; way too few people know this movie. I might watch it again on Sunday instead of the silly awards show for movies I haven't seen.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I <3 you for a post full of Oscar references.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The beer on that cake looks like it has a bunch of drowned fruit flies in it. Yum!

wv:ustros: Why don't ustros that horrible cake in the garbage, it's got flies!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "Oscar" (and the Oscars). For the longest time, I would enterain my mom with my impression of Marisa Tomeii whining, "I don't wanna marry Bruce Underwood III. He's boring and he's got PIMPLES."

That impression was, of course, replaced by me as Marisa as Mona Lisa Vito in "My Cousin Vinny."

    ReplyDelete
  43. Heh, I have made all my friends watch Oscar. I actually own it on VHS...wow, what a sad sentence...AND I'm originally from Middlesex County NJ...only, East Brunswick, not New Brunswick!

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Oscar cake is all wrong... Oscar is supposed to be holding a sword. (Perhaps a copyright dodge?)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I had never seen the movie, but I just watched it. Hilarious!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Love the movie Oscar. I was laughing so hard I cried when it came to the nicely rounded dipthongs line. That is my favorite part of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hahaha, love Oscar! It's one of my favorite movies.

    ReplyDelete
  48. OHHHHH.. I LOVE Oscar!!!
Dr Pooooole! Hello? Lol.. love it!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I wonder what the story is on cake #2. Guns N' Roses reference or just coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  50. OMG I am sooooo happy to see so many others who have seen the movie Oscar. It's one of the great under-rated movies of all time and the only one I like with Stalone. Bravo!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Gun wrecks. THANK YOU!!! Made a miserable day so much better.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I had never seen the film (shocking!), but as soon as I read today's post, I realized I needed to sit down and watch it. Wow, that is such an amazing film! Thank you so much for the post, Jen! I might never have realized what I had been missing!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Okay, I was totally lost reading this post because I've never seen the movie (actually had no idea it was a movie, so I really didn't get how the Oscars tied in with the rest of the cakes/comments).

However. it sounds like EVERYONE here recommends it, which means I have to go rent it. Since Jen's recommendation on her other blog about "Packing for Mars" was so great (I have never laughed that much reading a book), I can only trust in the wisdom of the Cake Wrecks team. Thanks!

wv: dismisti. The comments helped dismsti-fy the Oscar v. Oscars confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I lost it at "Don't call me boss." :D

    ReplyDelete
  55. Good thing you didn't decorate my cake like this yesterday...

It must be that all Oscar fans are also Cake Wreck fans, because I never run into an Oscar fan in real life!

    i enjoyed the laughs. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oscar is so funny!! I love when he starts pulling the underwear out of the bag acting like it's money. I die laughing every time!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Okay, I'll be the first one brave enough to say it: I've never seen "Oscar" and I don't know what the heck everyone's talking about. (And, yes, I saw the Wiki link.)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am happy to see that I am not alone in my love for Oscar "Snaps" Provolone. Love that movie. Guess what I'm watching tonight. And Jenn, it's all thanks to you now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, wait. Crap. I wasn't the first one to say it. Nevermind.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I have LOVED this movie for forever!!! No one else I know likes it so it makes me so happy to find a group of others who also love it!

    ReplyDelete
  64. OMG, I LOVE Oscar!! I've seen it a billion million times. The most fun you can have with chicken guns and spats!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I loooooove Oscar!! And everyone always thinks I'm super weird for liking it.. Yey!

    ReplyDelete
  66. SO glad to see such love for such an underappreciated movie (and one of the funniest of all time!)

If only you had an 'atrium' cake . . .

    ReplyDelete
  67. I thought those "bullets" were baby bell cheese.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Sorry Boss!

I don't think I've ever laughed harder than my first viewing of that movie!

    ReplyDelete
  69. On the boss cake, at least the "you're" is spelled correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  70. you quoted Oscar!!! you just shot up in my humble estimation

    ReplyDelete
  71. YOU HAD A CHILD WITH THE NEW MAID?!?!?

    I love that movie.

  72. So excited to see all the responses about 'Oscar'. We have been watching it for years and have still enjoy it every time. 'You want me should shoot 'im, Boss?' 'Don't call me boss'. 'Yes, boss!'. Love it. Another one to work on is "Radioland Murders". More great lines.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Eww that last cake looks like the beer threw up on it lol. Scary Oscar cake. I always thought that golden guy needed to be a cake wreck and finally someone did it. I can now die happy lol.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Love, Love, Love all the Oscar references!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Movie-related thing: *Kings of Pastry* was just released on DVD. Why it wasn't nominated, I don't know.

    Love the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yay! Oscar references!

  77. #1 'Oocars / Oscors' -- why is the statue wearing a hockey mask?

#2 Oh, dear. Are wreckerators contractually obligated to mess up at least one thing in every cake? This one put the apostrophes in the right places and managed to put the 'e' on you're. Even the penmanship is readable. But 'abuntantly'?

#3 could only be 'Gun & Roses'. It was an early lineup; the band didn't hit on the winning formula (more than one gun) until the following year. This could be a rare instance of a CCC (patooie!) that doesn't suck.

#4 Do we want to know how the yellow and the metallic-looking red were produced? Why don't I think so...

#5 'Hoppy Bosss's Day' indeed. I'm sure the bosss was underwhelmed, unless the party was at a pet store. If the border had been just a few yards narrower, there might have been room for both the 'e' on 'you're' and proper spacing on 'wonderful'. As it is, it's like a cake demotivational poster.

#6 A panic stop on the way home shmooshed the cake and removed three letters and an apostrophe.

#7 Dude. This one's for you -- I sure as heck don't want it!

    ReplyDelete
  78. You just made my day! OSCAR rules!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I freaking love Oscar. Funniest movie ever, though Clue and Young Frankenstein are close on that... :D

    ReplyDelete
  80. OK, I have to admit, I'd never seen Oscar. So I figured I'd better watch it . . . expeditiously.

So I did! And I laughed.

It was *disarmingly* funny, as are you.

My former choir director's voice (sounding nothing like Tim Curry) is in my head, saying "It's spelled and pronounced 'diphthong.' Yes, two h's."

Hey, don't blame me for being pedantic -- he said it!

    :)

  81. YEA for Oscar!!!! Easily in my Top 5 movies ever. :)

  82. I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!! You've made my day.

  83. You soooo didn't get jump on the "you'r" on the bosss's cake....bahahaha

  84. "Daddy, I'm a woman now. *Look!*"
"Put that away! I'm your FATHER!"

    ReplyDelete
  85. Wow! Very artistic and delicious looking. Love your cakes.

    ReplyDelete
  86. That is one of my ALLTIME FAVORITE movies!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oscar has been a favorite of my siblings and me since we were teeny bops!!! I just watched it with my husbo last week!!! I love how Marissa Tomei's tantrums are exactly like my 6-year-old's. I also love when Snaps is in the kitchen and asks if anyone knows where Ocsar lives. The guy at the sink says,"I know. Over on the south side." Snaps wants the guy to go get him, he says "Only he don't live there no more." MY FAVORITE!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'm so happy that someone else has even heard of Oscar! One of the best movies ever. My dad and I have watched it so many times that we could (and do) recite the entire movie. Oscar lovers of the world unite!

    "Oh, that's OK...I'll get it!"

    ReplyDelete
  89. "I don't know..... somewhere between my vest and my pants!" Oscar is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's unfortunate that Kirk Douglas was not credited at the end, though.
